Abstract:Treated traditionally by the Ehrenfest approximation, the dynamics of a one-dimensional molecular crystal model with off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling is investigated in this work using the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle with the multi-D2 Ansatz. It is shown that the Ehrenfest method is equivalent to our variational method with the single D2 Ansatz, and with the multi-D2 Ansatz, the accuracy of our simulated dynamics is significantly enhanced in comparison with the semi-classical Ehrenfest dynamics. The multi-D2 Ansatz is able to capture numerically accurate exciton momentum probability and help clarify the relation between the exciton momentum redistribution and the exciton energy relaxation. The results demonstrate that the exciton momentum distributions in the steady state are determined by a combination of the transfer integral and the off-diagonal coupling strength, independent of the excitonic initial conditions. We also probe the effect of the transfer integral and the off-diagonal coupling on exciton transport in both real and reciprocal space representations. Finally, the variational method with importance sampling is employed to investigate temperature effects on exciton transport using the multi-D2 Ansatz, and it is demonstrated that the variational approach is valid in both low and high temperature regimes.

Abstract:Recent ultrafast optical experiments show that excitons in large biological light-harvesting complexes are coupled to molecular vibration modes. These high-frequency vibrations will not only affect the optical response, but also drive the exciton transport. Here, using a model dimer system, the frequency of the underdamped vibration is shown to have a strong effect on the exciton dynamics such that quantum coherent oscillations in the system can be present even in the case of strong noise. Two mechanisms are identified to be responsible for the enhanced transport efficiency: critical damping due to the tunable effective strength of the coupling to the bath, and resonance coupling where the vibrational frequency coincides with the energy gap in the system. The interplay of these two mechanisms determines parameters responsible for the most efficient transport, and these optimal control parameters are comparable to those in realistic light-harvesting complexes. Interestingly, oscillations in the excitonic coherence at resonance are suppressed in comparison to the case of an off-resonant vibration.

Abstract:The non-hermitian quantum dynamics of excitonic energy transfer in photosynthetic systems is investigated using a dissipative two-level dimer model. The approach is based on the Green's function formalism which permits consideration of decoherence and intersite transfer processes on comparable terms. The results indicate a combination of coherent and incoherent behavior at higher temperatures with the possibility of exceptional points occurring at the coherent-incoherent crossover regime at critical temperatures. When each dimer site is coupled equally to the environmental sources of dissipation, the excitonic wavepacket evolves with time with a coherent component, which can be attributed to the indistinguishability of the sources of dissipation. The time evolution characteristics of the B850 Bchls dimer system is analysed using typical parameter estimates in photosynthetic systems, and the quantum brachistochrone passage times are obtained for a range of parameters.

Self-consistent approach to the dynamics of excitation energy transfer in multichromophoric systems

Abstract:Computationally tractable and reliable, albeit approximate, methods for studying exciton transport in molecular aggregates immersed in structured bosonic environments have been actively developed. Going beyond the lowest-order (Born) approximation for the memory kernel of the generalized quantum master equation typically results in complicated and possibly divergent expressions. Starting from the memory kernel in the Born approximation, and recognizing the quantum master equation as the Dyson equation of the Green's functions theory, we formulate the self-consistent Born approximation to resum the memory-kernel perturbation series in powers of the exciton-environment interaction. Our formulation is in the Liouville space and frequency domain, and handles arbitrary exciton-environment spectral densities. In a molecular dimer coupled to an overdamped oscillator environment, we conclude that the self-consistent cycle significantly improves the Born-approximation energy-transfer dynamics. The dynamics in the self-consistent Born approximation agree well with solutions of hierarchical equations of motion over a wide range of parameters, including the most challenging regimes of strong exciton-environment interactions, slow environments, and low temperatures. This is rationalized by analytical considerations of coherence-dephasing dynamics in the pure-dephasing model. We find that the self-consistent Born approximation is good (poor) at describing energy transfer modulated by an underdamped vibration resonant (off-resonant) with the exciton energy gap. Nevertheless, it reasonably describes exciton dynamics in the seven-site model of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex in a realistic environment comprising both an overdamped continuum and underdamped vibrations.

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of exciton transfer and decoherence effects in a photosynthetic dimer interacting with collective (correlated) and local (uncorrelated) protein-solvent environments. Our approach is based on the framework of the spin-boson model. We derive explicitly the thermal relaxation and decoherence rates of the exciton transfer process, valid for arbitrary temperatures and for arbitrary (in particular, large) interaction constants between the dimer and the environments. We establish a generalization of the Marcus formula, giving reaction rates for dimer levels possibly individually and asymmetrically coupled to environments. We identify rigorously parameter regimes for the validity of the generalized Marcus formula. The existence of long living quantum coherences at ambient temperatures emerges naturally from our approach.

Abstract:The dynamics of a single quantum state embedded in one or several (quasi-)continua is one of the most studied phenomena in quantum mechanics. In this work we investigate its discrete analogue and consider short and long time dynamics based on numerical and analytical solutions of the Schrödinger equation. In addition to derivation of explicit conditions for initial exponential decay, it is shown that a recent model of this class [Phys. Rev. A 95, 053821, (2017)], describing a qubit coupled to a phonon reservoir with energy dependent coupling parameters is identical to a qubit interacting with a finite number of parallel regularly spaced band of states via constant couplings. As a consequence, the characteristic near periodic initial state revivals can be viewed as a transition of probability between different continua via the reviving initial state. Furthermore, the observation of polynomial decay of the reviving peaks is present in any system with constant and sufficiently strong coupling.

Self-trapping phenomenon, multistability and chaos in open anisotropic Dicke dimer

Abstract:We investigate semiclassical dynamics of coupled atom-photon interacting system described by a dimer of anisotropic Dicke model in the presence of photon loss, exhibiting a rich variety of non-linear dynamics. Based on symmetries and dynamical classification, we characterize and chart out various dynamical phases in a phase diagram. A key feature of this system is the multistability of different dynamical states, particularly the coexistence of various superradiant phases as well as limit cycles. Remarkably, this dimer system manifests self-trapping phenomena, resulting in a photon population imbalance between the cavities. Such a self-trapped state arises from saddle-node bifurcation, which can be understood from an equivalent Landau-Ginzburg description. Additionally, we identify a unique class of oscillatory dynamics self-trapped limit cycle hosting self-trapping of photons. The absence of stable dynamical phases leads to the onset of chaos, which is diagnosed using the saturation value of the decorrelator dynamics. Moreover, in a narrow region, the self-trapped states can coexist with chaotic attractor, which may have intriguing consequences in quantum dynamics. Finally, we discuss the experimental relevance of our findings, which can be tested in cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics setups.

Abstract:The interplay between exctions and vibrations is considered to be a key factor in determining the exciton transfer properties in light-harvesting exciton transfer complexes. Here we study this interplay theoretically in a model for exciton transport, composed of two chromophores coupled to an exciton source and sink in the presence of vibrations. We consider two cases, that show qualitatively distinct transport features. In the first, the vibrations are global and affect the two chromophores simultaneously. In the second case, the vibrations are localized on each chromophore. For global vibrations, the current exhibits {\sl anti-resonances} as a function of the chromophore energy difference, which are due to exciton-polaron interference. For local vibrations, on the other hand, the currents shows tunneling {\sl resonances} at multiples of the vibration energy. Counter-intuitively, both effects increase with increasing temperature. Our results demonstrate that an environment can either assist or hamper exciton transport, and are in accord with current understanding of energy transfer in natural exciton transfer complexes.

Quantum dynamics simulation of exciton-polariton transport

Abstract:Strong coupling between excitons and confined modes of light presents a promising pathway to tunable and enhanced energy transport in organic materials. By forming hybrid light-matter quasiparticles, exciton-polaritons, electronic excitations can traverse long distances at high velocities through ballistic flow. However, transport behavior of exciton-polaritons varies strongly across experiments, spanning both diffusive and ballistic transport regimes. Which properties of the material and light-modes govern the transport behavior of polaritons remains an open question. Through full-quantum dynamical simulations we reveal a strong dependence of polariton transport on vibronic interactions within molecules in both ideal and lossy cavities. Specifically, we show that intramolecular vibrations mediate relaxation processes that alter polariton composition, lifetime and velocity on ultrafast timescales. Analysis of the propagating wavepacket in position and momentum space provides mechanistic insight into the robustness of ballistic flow of exciton-polaritons found experimentally under cryogenic conditions.

Abstract:We model the coherent energy transfer of an electronic excitation within covalently linked aromatic homodimers from first-principles, to answer whether the usual models of the bath calculated via detailed electronic structure calculations can reproduce the key dynamics. For these systems the timescales of coherent transport are experimentally known from time-dependent polarization anisotropy measurements, and so we can directly assess the whether current techniques might be predictive for this phenomenon. Two choices of electronic basis states are investigated, and their relative merits discussed regarding the predictions of the perturbative model. The coupling of the electronic degrees of freedom to the nuclear degrees of freedom is calculated rather than assumed, and the fluorescence anisotropy decay is directly reproduced. Surprisingly we find that although TDDFT absolute energies are routinely in error by orders of magnitude more than the coupling energy, the coherent transport properties of these dimers can be semi-quantitatively reproduced from first-principles. The directions which must be pursued to yield predictive and reliable prediction of coherent transport are suggested.

Abstract:In this theoretical study, we explore Förster resonant energy transfer of a single exciton within a two-dimensional array of self-assembled quantum dots arranged randomly on a circular mesa. Employing the stochastic simulation method, we solve the equation of motion for the density matrix, considering a specified decay rate. Our analysis quantifies diffusion through the mean-square displacement from the initially excited quantum dot, revealing distinct temporal stages: ballistic, normal diffusion, and saturation. Furthermore, we observe power-law localization of the exciton. Complementing our numerical investigations, we develop approximate analytical expressions that closely align with the numerical findings.

Dissipative chaos and steady state of open Tavis-Cummings dimer

Abstract:We consider a coupled atom-photon system described by the Tavis-Cummings dimer (two coupled cavities) in the presence of photon loss and atomic pumping, to investigate the quantum signature of dissipative chaos. The appropriate classical limit of the model allows us to obtain a phase diagram identifying different dynamical phases, especially the onset of chaos. Both classically and quantum mechanically, we demonstrate the emergence of a steady state in the chaotic regime and analyze its properties. The interplay between quantum fluctuation and chaos leads to enhanced mixing dynamics and dephasing, resulting in the formation of an incoherent photonic fluid. The steady state exhibits an intriguing phenomenon of subsystem thermalization even outside the chaotic regime; however, its effective temperature increases with the degree of chaos. Moreover, the statistical properties of the steady state show a close connection with the random matrix theory. Finally, we discuss the experimental relevance of our findings, which can be tested in cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics setups.

Abstract:Transport through molecular devices with strong coupling to a single vibrational mode is considered in the case where the vibration is damped by coupling to the environment. We focus on the weak tunneling limit, for which a rate equation approach is valid. The role of the environment can be characterized by a frictional damping term $\mysig(\omega)$ and corresponding frequency shift. We consider a molecule that is attached to a substrate, leading to frequency-dependent frictional damping of the single oscillator mode of the molecule, and compare it to a reference model with frequency-independent damping featuring a constant quality factor $Q$. For large values of $Q$, the transport is governed by tunneling between displaced oscillator states giving rise to the well-known series of the Frank-Condon steps, while at small $Q$, there is a crossover to the classical regime with an energy gap given by the classical displacement energy. Using realistic values for the elastic properties of the substrate and the size of the molecule, we calculate $I$-$V$ curves and find qualitative agreement between our theory and recent experiments on $C_{60}$ single-molecule devices.

Interplay Between Non-adiabatic Dynamics and Frenkel Exciton Transfer in Molecular Aggregates: Formulation and Application to a Perylene Bismide Model

Abstract:The quantum dynamics of linear molecular aggregates in the presence of S0-S1 and S0-S2 transitions is investigated putting emphasis on the interplay between local non-adiabatic S2 to S1 deactivation and Frenkel exciton transfer. The theoretical approach combines aspects of the linear vibronic coupling and Frenkel exciton models. Dynamics calculations are performed for the absorption spectrum and the electronic state populations using the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree approach. As an application perylene bisimde J-type dimer and trimer aggregates are considered, including four tuning and one coupling mode per monomer. This leads to a dynamical model comprising up to 7 electronic states and 15 vibrational modes. The unknown non-adiabatic coupling strength is treated as a parameter that is chosen in accordance with available absorption spectra. This leaves some flexibility that can be limited by the clearly distinguishable population dynamics.

Dissipative Dicke Model with Collective Atomic Decay: Bistability, Noise-Driven Activation and Non-Thermal First Order Superradiance Transition

Abstract:The Dicke model describes the coherent interaction of a laser-driven ensemble of two level atoms with a quantized light field. It is realized within cavity QED experiments, which in addition to the coherent Dicke dynamics feature dissipation due to e.g. atomic spontaneous emission and cavity photon loss. Spontaneous emission supports the uncorrelated decay of individual atomic excitations as well as the enhanced, collective decay of an excitation that is shared by $N$ atoms and whose strength is determined by the cavity geometry. We derive a many-body master equation for the dissipative Dicke model including both spontaneous emission channels and analyze its dynamics on the basis of Heisenberg-Langevin and stochastic Bloch equations. We find that the collective loss channel leads to a region of bistability between the empty and the superradiant state. Transitions between these states are driven by non-thermal, markovian noise. The interplay between dissipative and coherent elements leads to a genuine non-equilibrium dynamics in the bistable regime, which is expressed via a non-conservative force and a multiplicative noise kernel appearing in the stochastic Bloch equations. We present a semiclassical approach, based on stochastic nonlinear optical Bloch equations, which for the infinite-range Dicke Model become exact in the large-$N$-limit. The absence of an effective free energy functional, however, necessitates to include fluctuation corrections with $\mathcal{O}(1/N)$ for finite $N<\infty$ to locate the non-thermal first-order phase transition between the superradiant and the empty cavity.

Abstract:Strong coupling between the molecular system and photon inside the cavity generates polaritons, which can alter reaction rates by orders of magnitude. In this work, we benchmark the surface hopping method to simulate non-adiabatic dynamics in a cavity. The comparison is made against a numerically exact method (the hierarchical equations of motion) for a model system investigating excitonic energy transfer for a broad range of parameters. Surface hopping captures the effects of the radiation mode well, both at resonance and off-resonance. We have further investigated parameters that can increase or decrease the rate of population transfer, and we find that surface hopping in general can capture both effects well. Finally, we show that the dipole self-energy term within our parameter regime does not significantly affect the system’s dynamics.

Abstract:The quantum-dynamical mechanism of photoinduced subpicosecond exciton dissociation and the concomitant formation of a charge-separated state at a TFB:F8BT polymer heterojunction is elucidated. The analysis is based upon a two-state vibronic coupling Hamiltonian including an explicit 24-mode representation of a phonon bath comprising high-frequency (C$=$C stretch) and low-frequency (torsional) modes. The initial relaxation behavior is characterized by coherent oscillations, along with the decay through an extended nonadiabatic coupling region. This region is located in the vicinity of a conical intersection hypersurface. A central ingredient of the analysis is a novel effective mode representation, which highlights the role of the low-frequency modes in the nonadiabatic dynamics. Quantum dynamical simulations were carried out using the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method.

Abstract:Time-resolved spectroscopy provides the main tool for analyzing the dynamics of excitonic energy transfer in light-harvesting complexes. To infer time-scales and effective coupling parameters from experimental data requires to develop numerical exact theoretical models. The finite duration of the laser-molecule interactions and the reorganization process during the exciton migration affect the location and strength of spectroscopic signals. We show that the non-perturbative hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method captures these processes in a model exciton system, including the charge transfer state.

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that the transport of excitons in organic semiconductors can be significantly enhanced through hybridization with confined photonic modes in a cavity, thereby forming molecular exciton-polaritons (EP). Dissipative mechanisms that affect the constituent states of EPs, such as exciton-phonon coupling and cavity loss, have been observed to diminish their effective velocities in experiments. To elucidate the impacts of these dissipative mechanisms on the transport characteristics of molecular EPs, we develop an efficient quantum dynamics simulation approach that allows us to directly simulate polariton transport dynamics under the collective coupling regime and beyond long-wavelength approximation. Our numerical results suggest a renormalization of the group velocities with stronger exciton-phonon coupling strengths and smaller Q-factor, in agreement with existing polariton transport experiments. Additionally, we observe the transition from ballistic to diffusive EP propagation, as well as the quality factor-dependent behavior of the transient mean square displacement, agreeing well with the recent experimental measurements.
