Abstract:It is well known that using the conventional non-Hermitian but ${\cal PT}-$symmetric Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with real spectrum one can realize the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) process in an exceptional-point limit of order $N$. Such an exactly solvable simulation of the BEC-type phase transition is, unfortunately, incomplete because the standard version of the model only offers an extreme form of the limit characterized by a minimal geometric multiplicity $K=1$. In our paper we describe a rescaled and partitioned direct-sum modification of the linear version of the Bose-Hubbard model which remains exactly solvable while admitting any value of $K\geq 1$. It offers a complete menu of benchmark models numbered by a specific combinatorial scheme. In this manner, an exhaustive classification of the general BEC patterns with any geometric multiplicity is obtained and realized in terms of an exactly solvable generalized Bose-Hubbard model.

Abstract:Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimension are studied in detail on the basis of an exact solution. Corresponding to three possible choices of the referecce state in the quantum inverse scattering method, three sets of Bethe-ansatz equations are derived explicitly. The features of the ground state and low-lying excitations are investigated. The ground state phase diagram caused by the external field and chemical potential is obtained.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Bose system with repulsive delta-function interaction in the presence of an SU(2) intrinsic degree of freedom on the basis of the coordinate Bethe-ansatz. The ground state and the low-lying excitations are determined by both numerical and analytical methods. It is shown that the ground state is an isospin-ferromagnetic state, and the excitations are composed of three elementary particles: holons, antiholons, and isospinons. The isospinon is a triplet coupled to the "ferromagnetic" background anti-parallelly.

Abstract:We study interacting Bose gases of dimensions $2\le d \in \mathbb N$ at zero temperature in a random model known as the Kac-Luttinger model. Choosing the pair-interaction between the bosons to be of a mean-field type, we prove (complete) Bose-Einstein condensation in probability or with probability almost one into the minimizer of a Hartree-type functional. We accomplish this by building upon very recent results by Alain-Sol Sznitman on the spectral gap of the noninteracting Bose gas.

Off-diagonal long-range order for the free Bose gas via the Feynman--Kac formula

Abstract:We consider the path-integral representation of the ideal Bose gas under various boundary conditions. We show that Bose--Einstein condensation occurs at the famous critical density threshold, by proving that its $1$-particle-reduced density matrix exhibits off-diagonal long-range order above that threshold, but not below. Our proofs are based on the well-known Feynman--Kac formula and a representation in terms of a crucial Poisson point process. Furthermore, in the condensation regime, we derive a law of large numbers with strong concentration for the number of particles in short loops. In contrast to the situation for free boundary conditions, where the entire condensate sits in just one loop, for all other boundary conditions we obtain the limiting Poisson--Dirichlet distribution for the collection of the lengths of all long loops. Our proofs are new and purely probabilistic (apart from a standard eigenvalue expansion), using elementary tools like Markov's inequality, Poisson point processes, combinatorial formulas for cardinalities of particular partition sets, and asymptotics for random walks with Pareto-distributed steps.

Abstract:Multifield correlation functions are calculated in the Bose gas model. It is shown that the multifield correlation functions like the correlator of currents previously calculated can be expressed in terms of the irreducible parts of the form factors and the solutions of nonlinear integral equations.

Abstract:We prove that the complex Euclidean field theory with local quartic self-interaction in two dimensions arises as a limit of an interacting Bose gas at positive temperature, when the density of the gas becomes large and the range of the interaction becomes small. The field theory is supported on distributions of negative regularity, which requires a renormalization by divergent mass and energy counterterms. We obtain convergence of the relative partition function and uniform convergence of the renormalized reduced density matrices. The proof is based on three main ingredients: (a) a quantitative analysis of the infinite-dimensional saddle point argument for the functional integral introduced in [32] using continuity properties of Brownian paths, (b) a Nelson-type estimate for a general nonlocal field theory in two dimensions, and (c) repeated Gaussian integration by parts in field space to obtain uniform control on the renormalized correlation functions. As a byproduct of our proof, in two and three dimensions we also extend the results on the mean-field limit from [32,56] to unbounded interaction potentials satisfying the optimal integrability conditions proposed by Bourgain [13].

Abstract:Let B be a spacetime region of width 2R > 0, and \phi a vector state localized in B. We show that the vacuum relative entropy of \phi, on the local von Neumann algebra of B, is bounded by 2\pi R-times the energy of the state \phi in B. This bound is model-independent and rigorous; it follows solely from first principles in the framework of translation covariant, local Quantum Field Theory on the Minkowski spacetime.

The description in the case of finite temperature is developed for both normal modes and zero modes. The treatment extends the thermofield-bosonization for periodic space.

Abstract:We consider the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplacian among a Poissonian cloud of hard spherical obstacles of fixed radius in large boxes of $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 2$. In a large box of side-length $2l$ centered at the origin, the lowest eigenvalue is known to be typically of order $(\log l)^{-2/d}$. We show here that with probability arbitrarily close to $1$ as $l$ goes to infinity, the spectral gap stays bigger than $\sigma (\log l)^{-(1 + 2/d)}$, where the small positive number $\sigma$ depends on how close to $1$ one wishes the probability. Incidentally, the scale $(\log l)^{-(1+ 2/d)}$ is expected to capture the correct size of the gap. Our result involves the proof of new deconcentration estimates. Combining this lower bound on the spectral gap with the results of Kerner-Pechmann-Spitzer, we infer a type-I generalized Bose-Einstein condensation in probability for a Kac-Luttinger system of non-interacting bosons among Poissonian spherical impurities, with the sole macroscopic occupation of the one-particle ground state when the density exceeds the critical value.

Abstract:We investigate the effect that spatially modulated continuous conserved quantities can have on quantum ground states. We do so by introducing a family of one-dimensional local quantum rotor and bosonic models which conserve finite Fourier momenta of the particle number, but not the particle number itself. These correspond to generalizations of the standard Bose-Hubbard model (BHM), and relate to the physics of Bose surfaces. First, we show that while having an infinite-dimensional local Hilbert space, such systems feature a non-trivial Hilbert space fragmentation for momenta incommensurate with the lattice. This is linked to the nature of the conserved quantities having a dense spectrum and provides the first such example. We then characterize the zero-temperature phase diagram for both commensurate and incommensurate momenta. In both cases, analytical and numerical calculations predict a phase transition between a gapped (Mott insulating) and quasi-long range order phase; the latter is characterized by a two-species Luttinger liquid in the infrared, but dressed by oscillatory contributions when computing microscopic expectation values. Following a rigorous Villain formulation of the corresponding rotor model, we derive a dual description, from where we estimate the robustness of this phase using renormalization group arguments, where the driving perturbation has ultra-local correlations in space but power law correlations in time. We support this conclusion using an equivalent representation of the system as a two-dimensional vortex gas with modulated Coulomb interactions within a fixed symmetry sector. We conjecture that a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition is driven by the unbinding of vortices along the temporal direction.

Infinite cycles of interacting bosons

Abstract:In the first-quantized description of bosonic systems permutation cycles formed by the particles play a fundamental role. In the ideal Bose gas Bose-Enstein condensation (BEC) is signaled by the appearance of infinite cycles. When the particles interact, the two phenomena may not be simultaneous, the existence of infinite cycles is necessary but not sufficient for BEC. We demonstrate that their appearance is always accompanied by a singularity in the thermodynamic quantities which in three and four dimensions can be as strong as a one-sided divergence of the isothermal compressibility. Arguments are presented that long-range interactions can give rise to unexpected results, such as the absence of infinite cycles in three dimensions for long-range repulsion or their presence in one and two dimensions if the pair potential has a long attractive tail.

Abstract:Abstract We construct states describing Bose–Einstein condensates at finite temperature for a relativistic massive complex scalar field with $$|\varphi |^4$$ | φ | 4 -interaction. We start with the linearized theory over a classical condensate and construct interacting fields by perturbation theory. Using the concept of thermal masses, equilibrium states at finite temperature can be constructed by the methods developed in Fredenhagen and Lindner (Commun Math Phys 332:895, 2014) and Drago et al. (Ann Henri Poincaré 18:807, 2017). Here, the principle of perturbative agreement plays a crucial role. The apparent conflict with Goldstone’s theorem is resolved by the fact that the linearized theory breaks the U (1) symmetry; hence, the theorem applies only to the full series but not to the truncations at finite order which therefore can be free of infrared divergences.

Abstract:We describe a novel way to think about bosonic lattice theories in Hamiltonian form where each lattice site has only a half boson degree of freedom. The construction requires a non-trivial Poisson bracket between neighboring sites and leads to gapless theories with non-invertible symmetries. We also describe a bosonic version of Kahler-Dirac fermions, dubbed Kahler-Dirac bosons that can be performed on any triangulation of a manifold. This also leads to a straightforward implementation of supersymmetry on the lattice and one immediately deduces the Dirac equation of the corresponding Kahler-Dirac fermions.

Abstract:CANGAROO-III is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) array of four 10 m telescopes for very high energy (sub-TeV) gamma-ray astronomy. A design study of the CANGAROO-III telescope system was carried out using the Monte Carlo technique in order to optimize the pixel size and the telescope spacing. Studies were also made of observations at low elevation angles.

Dimers and discrete breathers in Bose-Einstein condensates in a quasi-periodic potential

Abstract:A quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a quasi-periodic potential created by two sub-lattices of comparable amplitudes and incommensurate periods is considered. Although the conventional tight-binding approximation is not applicable in this setting, the description can still be reduced to a discrete model that accounts for the modes below the mobility edge. In the respective discrete lattice, where no linear hopping exists, solutions and their dynamics are governed solely by nonlinear interactions. Families of nonlinear modes, including those with no linear limit, are described with a special focus on dimers, which correspond to breather solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a quasi-periodic potential. The breathers are found to be stable for negative scattering lengths. Localization and stable propagation of breathers are also observed for positive scattering lengths at relatively weak and moderate nonlinearities.

Bosonization of primary fields for the critical Ising model on multiply connected planar domains

Abstract:We prove bosonization identities for the scaling limits of the critical Ising correlations in finitely-connected planar domains, expressing those in terms of correlations of the compactified Gaussian free field. This, in particular, yields explicit expressions for the Ising correlations in terms of domain's period matrix, Green's function, harmonic measures of boundary components and arcs, or alternatively, Abelian differentials on the Schottky double. Our proof is based on a limiting version of a classical identity due to D.~Hejhal and J.~Fay relating Szegő kernels and Abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces, and a systematic use of operator product expansions both for the Ising and the bosonic correlations.

Abstract:We prove the equivalence between the hard-sphere Bose gas and a system with momentum-dependent zero-range interactions in one spatial dimension, which we call extended hard-sphere Bose gas. The two-body interaction in the latter model has the advantage of being a regular pseudopotential. The most immediate consequence is the existence of its Fourier transform, permitting the formulation of the problem in momentum space, not possible with the original hard-core interaction. In addition, in the extended system, interactions are defined in terms of the scattering length, positive or negative, identified with the hard-sphere diameter only when it is positive. We are then able to obtain, directly in the thermodynamic limit, the ground-state energy of the strongly repulsive Lieb-Liniger gas and, more importantly, the energy of the lowest-lying super Tonks-Girardeau gas state with finite, strongly attractive interactions, in perturbation theory from the novel extended hard-sphere Bose gas.

Abstract:A general free bosonic system with a pairing term is described by a bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian. The representation is given by a pseudo-Hermitian matrix, which is crucially different from the Hermitian representation of a fermionic BdG Hamiltonian. In fermionic BdG systems, a topological invariant of the whole particle (hole) bands can be nontrivial, which characterizes the Andreev bound states (ABS) including Majorana fermions. In bosonic cases, on the other hand, the corresponding topological invariant is thought to be trivial owing to the stability condition of the bosonic ground state. In this Letter, we consider a two-dimensional model that realizes a bosonic analogy of the ABS. The boundary states of this model are located outside the bulk bands and are characterized by a nontrivial Berry phase (or polarization) of the hole band. Furthermore, we investigate the zero-energy flat-band limit in which the Bloch Hamiltonian is defective, where the particle and hole states are identical to each other. In this limit, the Berry phase is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantized thanks to an emergent parity-time symmetry. This is an example of a topological invariant that uses the defective nature as a projection structure. Thus, boundary states in our model are essentially different from Hermitian topological modes and their variants.
