Abstract:In this paper we study the norm-attainment of positive operators between Banach lattices. By considering an absolute version of James boundaries, we prove that: If $E$ is a reflexive Banach lattice whose order is given by a basis and $F$ is a Dedekind complete Banach lattice, then every positive operator from $E$ to $F$ is compact if and only if every positive operator from $E$ to $F$ attains its norm. An analogue result considering that $E$ is reflexive and the order in $F$ is continuous and given by a basis was proven. We applied our result to study a positive version of the weak maximizing property.

Abstract:We study the lattice of closed ideals of bounded operators on two families of Banach spaces: the Baernstein spaces $B_p$ for $1<p<\infty$ and the Schreier spaces $S_p$ for $1\le p<\infty$. Our main conclusion is that there are $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ many closed ideals that lie between the ideals of compact and strictly singular operators on each of these spaces, and also $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ many closed ideals that contain projections of infinite rank. Counterparts of results of Gasparis and Leung using a numerical index to distinguish the isomorphism types of subspaces spanned by subsequences of the unit vector basis for the higher-order Schreier spaces play a key role in the proofs, as does the Johnson-Schechtman technique for constructing $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ many closed ideals of operators on a Banach space.

Abstract:We obtain a strengthening of the principle of local reflexivity in a general form. The added strength makes local reflexivity operators respect given subspaces. Applications are given to bounded approximation properties of pairs, consisting of a Banach space and its subspace.

Abstract:A bounded linear operator $U$ between Banach spaces is universal for the complement of some operator ideal $\mathfrak{J}$ if it is a member of the complement and it factors through every element of the complement of $\mathfrak{J}$. In the first part of this paper, we produce new universal operators for the complements of several ideals and give examples of ideals whose complements do not admit such operators. In the second part of the paper, we use Descriptive Set Theory to study operator ideals. After restricting attention to operators between separable Banach spaces, we call an operator ideal $\mathfrak{J}$ generic if anytime an operator $A$ has the property that every operator in $\mathfrak{J}$ factors through a restriction of $A$, then every operator between separable Banach spaces factors through a restriction of $A$. We prove that many of classical operator ideals are generic (i.e. strictly singular, weakly compact, Banach-Saks) and give a sufficient condition, based on the complexity of the ideal, for when the complement does not admit a universal operator. Another result is a new proof of a theorem of M. Girardi and W.B. Johnson which states that there is no universal operator for the complement of the ideal of completely continuous operators.

Abstract:It was recently shown in [24] that the Banach space operator relations Equivalence After Extension (EAE) and Schur Coupling (SC) do not coincide by characterizing these relations for operators acting on essentially incomparable Banach spaces. The examples that prove the non-coincidence are Fredholm operators, which is a subclass of relatively regular operators, the latter being operators with complementable kernels and ranges. In this paper we analyse the relations EAE and SC for the class of relatively regular operators, leading to an equivalent Banach space operator problem from which we derive new cases where EAE and SC coincide and provide a new example for which EAE and SC do not coincide and where the Banach space are not essentially incomparable.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a von Neumann algebra and $a$ be a self-adjoint operator affiliated with $\mathscr{M}$. We define the notion of an "integral symmetrically normed ideal" of $\mathscr{M}$ and introduce a space $OC^{[k]}(\mathbb{R}) \subseteq C^k(\mathbb{R})$ of functions $\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ such that the following result holds: for any integral symmetrically normed ideal $\mathscr{I}$ of $\mathscr{M}$ and any $f \in OC^{[k]}(\mathbb{R})$, the operator function $\mathscr{I}_{\mathrm{sa}} \ni b \mapsto f(a+b)-f(a) \in \mathscr{I}$ is $k$-times continuously Fréchet differentiable, and the formula for its derivatives may be written in terms of multiple operator integrals. Moreover, we prove that if $f \in \dot{B}_1^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R}) \cap \dot{B}_1^{k,\infty}(\mathbb{R})$ and $f'$ is bounded, then $f \in OC^{[k]}(\mathbb{R})$. Finally, we prove that all of the following ideals are integral symmetrically normed: $\mathscr{M}$ itself, separable symmetrically normed ideals, Schatten $p$-ideals, the ideal of compact operators, and -- when $\mathscr{M}$ is semifinite -- ideals induced by fully symmetric spaces of measurable operators.

Abstract:Let $X,\,Y$ be Banach spaces and fix a linear operator $T \in \mathcal {L}(X,\,Y)$ and ideals $\mathcal {I},\, \mathcal {J}$ on the nonnegative integers. We obtain Silverman–Toeplitz type theorems on matrices $A=(A_{n,k}: n,\,k \in \omega )$ of linear operators in $\mathcal {L}(X,\,Y)$ , so that \[ \mathcal{J}\text{-}\lim A\boldsymbol{x}=T(\mathcal{I}\text{-}\lim \boldsymbol{x}) \] for every $X$ -valued sequence $\boldsymbol {x}=(x_0,\,x_1,\,\ldots )$ which is $\mathcal {I}$ -convergent (and bounded). This allows us to establish the relationship between the classical Silverman–Toeplitz characterization of regular matrices and its multidimensional analogue for double sequences, its variant for matrices of linear operators, and the recent version (for the scalar case) in the context of ideal convergence. As byproducts, we obtain characterizations of several matrix classes and a generalization of the classical Hahn–Schur theorem. In the proofs we use an ideal version of the Banach–Steinhaus theorem which has been recently obtained by De Bondt and Vernaeve [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 495 (2021)].

Abstract:A unification version of the Perron–Frobenius theorem and the Krein–Rutman theorem for increasing, positively 1-homogeneous, compact mappings is given on ordered Banach spaces without monotonic norm. A Collatz-type minimax characterization of the positive eigenvalue with positive eigenvector is obtained. The power method in computing the largest eigenpair is also extended.

Abstract:We study the space of $p$-compact operators $\mathcal K_p$, using the theory of tensor norms and operator ideals. We prove that $\mathcal K_p$ is associated to $/d_p$, the left injective associate of the Chevet-Saphar tensor norm $d_p$ (which is equal to $g_{p'}'$). This allows us to relate the theory of $p$-summing operators with that of $p$-compact operators. With the results known for the former class and appropriate hypothesis on $E$ and $F$ we prove that $\mathcal K_p(E;F)$ is equal to $\mathcal K_q(E;F)$ for a wide range of values of $p$ and $q$, and show that our results are sharp. We also exhibit several structural properties of $\mathcal K_p$. For instance, we obtain that $\mathcal K_p$ is regular, surjective, totally accessible and characterize its maximal hull $\mathcal K_p^{max}$ as the dual ideal of the $p$-summing operators, $\Pi_p^{dual}$. Furthermore, we prove that $\mathcal K_p$ coincides isometrically with $\mathcal {QN}_p^{dual}$, the dual ideal of the quasi $p$-nuclear operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we study two 'dual' problems in the operator space theory. We first show that if L is a finite-dimensional operator space, then L has the OLLP if and only if for ally indexed family of operator spaces (W-i)(i epsilon I) and a free ultrafilter U on I, we have a complete isometry Pi (L (circle times) over capW(i))/U = L (circle times) over cap Pi W-i/U. Next, we show that, if W is an operator space, then T-n (circle times) over capW** holds if and only if W is T-locally reflexive, if and only if for any finitely representable operator spaces V, we have an isometry I(V, W*) = (V (circle times) over capW)*.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly study operator spaces which have the locally lifting property (UP). The dual of any ternary ring of operators is shown to satisfy the strongly local reflexivity, and this is used to prove that strongly local reflexivity holds also for operator spaces which have the LLP. Several homological characterizations of the UP and weak expectation property are given. We also prove that for any operator space V, V** has the LLP if and only if V has the LLP and V* is exact.
On a general concept of a Hausdorff-type operator

Abstract:A unified approach to the concept of a Hausdorff operator is proposed in such a way that a number of classical and new operators feet into the given definition. Conditions are given for the boundedness of the operators under consideration in $L^p$ and in the atomic Hardy space $H^1$, and their regularity property is investigated. Examples are considered. The author hopes that this approach will allow one to unify the study of a lot of extensions and analogs of the classical Hausdorff operator.

Abstract:We study a notion analogous to the $p$-Approximation Property ($p$-AP) for Banach spaces, within the noncommutative context of operator spaces. Referred to as the $p$-Operator Approximation Property ($p$-OAP), this concept is linked to the ideal of operator $p$-compact mappings. We present several equivalent characterizations based on the density of finite-rank mappings within specific spaces for different topologies, and also one in terms of a slice mapping property. Additionally, we investigate how this property transfers from the dual or bidual to the original space. As an application, the $p$-OAP for the reduced $C^*$-algebra of a discrete group implies that operator $p$-compact Herz-Schur multipliers can be approximated in $\cb$-norm by finitely supported multipliers.

Abstract:A semibounded operator or relation $S$ in a Hilbert space with lower bound $m \in {\mathbb R}$ has a symmetric extension $S_{\rm f}=S {\, \widehat + \,} (\{0\} \times {\rm mul\,} S^*)$, the weak Friedrichs extension of $S$, and a selfadjoint extension $S_{\rm F}$, the Friedrichs extension of $S$, that satisfy $S \subset S_{\rm f} \subset S_{\rm F}$. The Friedrichs extension $S_{\rm F}$ has lower bound $\gamma$ and it is the largest semibounded selfadjoint extension of $S$. Likewise, for each $c \leq \gamma$, the relation $S$ has a weak Kre\uın type extension $S_{{\rm k},c}=S {\, \widehat + \,} (\ker (S^*-c) \times \{0\})$ and Kre\uın type extension $S_{{\rm K},c}$ of $S$, that satisfy $S \subset S_{{\rm k},c} \subset S_{{\rm K},c}$. The Kre\uın type extension $S_{{\rm K},c}$ has lower bound $c$ and it is the smallest semibounded selfadjoint extension of $S$ which is bounded below by $c$. In this paper these special extensions and, more generally, all extremal extensions of $S$ are constructed in terms of a representing map for ${\mathfrak t}(S)-c$ and their properties are being considered.

Abstract:We study monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces that are invariant with respect to a group of suitable isometric isomorphisms and we show that they always admit a maximal extension which preserves the same invariance. A similar result applies to Lipschitz maps in Hilbert spaces, thus providing an invariant version of Kirzsbraun-Valentine extension Theorem. We then provide a relevant application to the case of monotone operators in $L^p$-spaces of random variables which are invariant with respect to measure-preserving isomorphisms, proving that they always admit maximal dissipative extensions which are still invariant by measure-preserving isomorphisms. We also show that such operators are law invariant, a much stronger property which is also inherited by their resolvents, the Moreau-Yosida approximations, and the associated semigroup of contractions. These results combine explicit representation formulae for the maximal extension of a monotone operator based on selfdual lagrangians and a refined study of measure-preserving maps in standard Borel spaces endowed with a nonatomic measure, with applications to the approximation of arbitrary couplings between measures by sequences of maps.

Abstract:In his monograph on Infinite Abelian Groups, I. Kaplansky raised three ``test problems" concerning their structure and multiplicity. As noted by Azoff, these problems make sense for any category admitting a direct sum operation. Here, we are interested in the operator theoretic version of Kaplansky's second problem which asks: if $A$ and $B$ are operators on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space and $A \oplus A$ is equivalent to $B \oplus B$ in some (precise) sense, is $A$ equivalent to $B$? We examine this problem under a strengthening of the hypothesis, where a ``primitive" square root $J_2(A)$ of $A\oplus A$ is assumed to be equivalent to the corresponding square root $J_2(B)$ of $B \oplus B$. When ``equivalence" refers to similarity of operators and $A$ is a compact operator, we deduce from this stronger hypothesis that $A$ and $B$ are similar. We exhibit a counterexample (due to J. Bell) of this phenomenon in the setting of unital rings. Also, we exhibit an uncountable family $\{ U_\alpha\}_{\alpha \in \Omega}$ of unitary operators, no two of which are unitarily equivalent, such that each $U_\alpha$ is unitarily equivalent to $J_n(U_\alpha)$, a ``primitive" $n^{th}$ root of $U_\alpha \oplus U_\alpha \oplus \cdots \oplus U_\alpha$.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a reflexive, dense, separable, infinite dimensional complex Hilbert space and let $B(H)$ be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on $H$. In this paper, we carry out characterizations of norm-attainable operators in normed spaces.
