Abstract:In this work I study the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) induced by a cosmological background of gravitational waves (here GWs) and I discuss the enhancement effect of a possible late and fast reionization of the Universe, caused by the Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes and happening at a redshift $z\sim 20÷30$. Then, I solve the radiative Boltzmann transfer equation in the form of a second-kind Volterra integral equation, by using the analytical method of the iterated kernels: this particular method can be successfully applied when we have an exponential kernel, as in the case when the Universe is reionized by the intense particle emission coming from evaporating primordial black holes.

Abstract:We use semi-analytical models to study the effects of primordial black hole (PBH) accretion on the cosmic radiation background during the epoch of reionization ($z\gtrsim 6$). We consider PBHs floating in the intergalactic medium (IGM), and located inside haloes, where star formation can occur. For stars with a mass $\gtrsim 25 \rm\ M_{\odot}$, formed in suitable host haloes, we assume they quickly burn out and form stellar remnant black holes (SRBHs). Since SRBHs also accrete material from their surroundings, we consider them to have similar radiation feedback as PBHs in the halo environment. To estimate the background radiation level more accurately, we take into account the impact of PBHs on structure formation, allowing an improved modeling of the halo mass function. We consider the radiation feedback from a broad suite of black holes: PBHs, SRBHs, high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), and supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We find that at $z\gtrsim 30$, the radiation background energy density is generated by PBHs accreting in the IGM, whereas at lower redshifts, the accretion feedback power from haloes dominates. We also analyze the total power density by modeling the accretion spectral energy distribution (SED), and break it down into select wavebands. In the UV band, we find that for $f_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^{-3}$, the H-ionizing and Lyman-$\alpha$ fluxes from PBH accretion feedback do not violate existing constraints on the timing of reionization, and on the effective Wouthuysen-Field coupling of the 21-cm spin temperature of neutral hydrogen to the kinetic temperature of the IGM. However, in the X-ray band, with the same abundance, PBHs contribute significantly and could account for the unresolved part of the cosmic X-ray background.

The impact of faint AGN discovered by JWST on reionization

Abstract:The relative contribution of emission from stellar sources and accretion onto supermassive black holes to reionization has been brought into focus again by the apparent high abundance of faint AGN at $4\lesssim z\lesssim11$ uncovered by JWST. We investigate the contribution of these faint AGN to hydrogen and the early stages of helium reionization using the GPU-based radiative transfer code ATON-HE by post-processing a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation from the SHERWOOD-RELICS suite of simulations. We study four models of reionization: two previously studied galaxy-only late-end reionization models and two new models -- a QSO-assisted model and a QSO-only model. In the QSO-assisted model, 1\% of the haloes host AGN with a 10~Myr lifetime, and the AGN luminosities are scaled such that the AGN contribution to the hydrogen-ionizing emissivity is 20\% of that contributed by galaxies. In the QSO-only model, quasars account for all the hydrogen-ionizing emissivity, with 10\% of the haloes hosting AGN, each with a 10 Myr lifetime. All models are calibrated to the observed mean Lyman-$\alpha$ forest transmission at $5\lesssim z\lesssim6.2$. We find that the QSO-assisted model requires an emissivity factor of $1.8$ lower than the galaxy-only models towards the end of reionization and fits the observed distribution of the Lyman-$\alpha$ optical depths well. Our QSO-only model is inconsistent with the observed Lyman-$\alpha$ optical depths distribution. It also results in too high IGM temperatures at $z\lesssim 5$ due to an early onset of HeII reionization unless the escape fraction of HeII-ionizing photons is assumed to be low. Our results suggest that a modest contribution to reionization by faint AGN is in good agreement with the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest data. In contrast, a scenario dominated by faint AGN appears difficult to reconcile with these observations.

Influence of Primordial Black Holes on Cosmic Reionization through Semi-Analytical Modelling

Abstract:This research addresses the influence of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) on cosmic reionization, using a robust semi-analytical model. This model encapsulates cosmological theory, PBH physics, and radiative transfer, with a lognormal PBH mass function as the fulcrum, with the mean PBH mass set at 30 solar masses and the fraction of dark matter in PBHs ($f_{PBH}$) varied from 1.26 to 10. We also adopt a standard thin-disk accretion model and a one-dimensional radiative transfer code for a comprehensive depiction of cosmic reionization under the influence of PBHs. Our major findings reveal an inverse relationship between PBH mass and ionizing efficiency. For instance, when the mean PBH mass is 10 solar masses, and $f_{PBH}$ is 0.1, the resulting ionizing efficiency is approximately 0.25, which drops to 0.15 with a mean PBH mass of 50 solar masses. However, with $f_{PBH}$ nearing unity, even large PBHs (mean mass of 100 solar masses) can achieve an ionizing efficiency close to 0.2. The ionization history indicates that for a mean PBH mass of 10 solar masses and $f_{PBH}$ at 0.01, rapid ionization commences at z=12.5+0.5/z=12.5-0.5 and concludes at z=9+0.5/z=9-0.5. Conversely, with a larger PBH mass of 100 solar masses and $f_{PBH}$ at 0.01, reionization initiates later, at z=10.8+0.4/z=10.8-0.4. Our two-point correlation function analysis unveils the formation of ionized bubbles with an initial size of approximately 10 Mpc at z=7.5+0.5/z=7.5-0.5 for an $f_{PBH}$ of 0.01, expanding to 20 Mpc by the end of reionization. With $f_{PBH}$ of 0.1, larger bubbles form, starting at approximately 15 Mpc and reaching 30 Mpc by reionization's end. In conclusion, PBHs significantly influence cosmic reionization, with PBH mass and their contribution to dark matter modulating this impact.

Reionization of the Intergalactic Medium and the Damping Wing of the Gunn-Peterson Trough

Abstract:Observations of high-redshift quasars show that the IGM must have been reionized at some redshift $z>5$. If a source of radiation could be observed at the rest-frame Lya wavelength, at a sufficiently high redshift where some of the IGM in the line-of-sight was not yet reionized, the Gunn-Peterson trough should be present. Longward of the Lya wavelength, a damping wing should be observed caused by the neutral IGM whose absorption profile can be predicted. Measuring the shape of this damping wing would provide irrefutable evidence of the observation of the IGM before reionization, and a determination of the density of the neutral IGM. This measurement might be hindered by the possible presence of a dense absorption system associated with the source. Shortward of the \lya wavelength, absorption should be seen from the patchy structure of the IGM in the process of reionization. We show that a complete Gunn-Peterson trough is most likely to continue to be observed through the epoch where the IGM is partially ionized. The damping wings of the neutral patches should overlap if the proper pathlength through an ionized region is less than 1 h^{-1} Mpc; even in larger ionized regions, the characteristic background intensity should be low enough to yield a very high optical depth due to the residual neutral fraction, although occasionally some flux may be transmitted through large, underdense voids within an ionized region. The case of the HeII reionization is also discussed, and we argue that helium was already doubly ionized by z=3 throughout the IGM. The recently discovered afterglows of gamma-ray bursts might soon be observed at very high redshifts. Their featureless continuum spectrum and high luminosities make them ideal sources for studying absorption by the IGM.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Recently, models of the quasar luminosity function (QLF) rooted on large observational compilations have been produced that, unlike their predecessors, feature a smooth evolution with time. This bypasses the need to assume an ionizing emissivity evolution when simulating helium reionization with observations-based QLF, thus yielding more robust constraints. We combine one such QLF with a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation and 3D multifrequency radiative transfer. The simulated reionization history is consistently delayed in comparison to most other models in the literature. The predicted intergalactic medium temperature is larger than the observed one at $z \lesssim 3$. Through forward modelling of the He ii Lyman $\alpha$ forest, we show that our model produces an extended helium reionization and successfully matches the bulk of the observed effective optical depth distribution, although it overionizes the Universe at $z\lesssim 2.8$ as the effect of small-scale Lyman Limit Systems not being resolved. We thoroughly characterize transmission regions and dark gaps in He ii Lyman $\alpha$ forest sightlines. We quantify their sensitivity to the helium reionization, opening a new avenue for further observational studies of this epoch. Finally, we explore the implications for helium reionization of the large number of active galactic nuclei revealed at $z\gtrsim 5$ by JWST. We find that such modifications do not affect any observable at $z\le 4$, except in our most extreme model, indicating that the observed abundance of high-z AGNs does not bear consequences for helium reionization.

UNCOVERing the contribution of black holes to reionization in the JWST era

Abstract:With its sensitivity in the rest-frame optical, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has uncovered active galactic nuclei (AGN), comprising both intrinsically faint and heavily reddened sources, well into the first billion years of the Universe, at $z \sim 4-11$. In this work, we revisit the AGN contribution to reionization given the high number densities associated with these objects. We use the DELPHI semi-analytic model, base-lined against the latest high-redshift datasets from the JWST and the Atacama Large millimetre Array (ALMA) to model early star forming galaxies and AGN. We calculate the escape fractions of ionizing radiation from both star formation and AGN and include the impact of reionization feeback in suppressing the baryonic content of low-mass galaxies in ionized regions. This model is validated against the key observables for star forming galaxy, AGN and reionization. In our {\it fiducial} model, reionization reaches its mid-point at $z \sim 6.9$ and ends by $z \sim 5.9$. Low stellar mass ($M_*\leq 10^9M_\odot$) star forming galaxies are found to be the key drivers of the reionization process, providing about $77\%$ of the total photon budget. Despite their high numbers, high accretion rates and higher escape fractions compared to star forming galaxies at $z \sim 5$, AGN only provide about $23\%$ of the total reionization budget which is dominated by black holes in high stellar mass systems (with $M_* \geq 10^9M_\odot$). This is because AGN number densities become relevant only at $z \leq 7$ - as a result, AGN contribute as much as galaxies as late as $z \sim 6.2$, when reionization is already in its end stages. Finally, we find that even contrasting models of the AGN ionizing photon escape fraction (increasing or decreasing with stellar mass) do not qualitatively change our results.

A blazar in the epoch of reionization

Abstract:Relativistic jets are thought to play a crucial role in the formation of massive galaxies and supermassive black holes. Here we report multi-wavelength and multi-epoch observations of the quasar VLASSJ0410-0139 at redshift z=7, powered by a 7e8 solar-mass black hole. Its radio variability, X-ray properties, and compact radio emission on parsec scales reveal that J0410-0139 is a blazar with a relativistic jet aligned with our line of sight. This blazar's existence implies that many more similar (unaligned) jetted sources must exist at z=7. One scenario is that we observe an intrinsically low-power radio jet, but we see it at high luminosity due to relativistic beaming effects. In this case, a large fraction (>80%) of the UV bright quasars must have a similar jet to match the number density expected from the UV quasar luminosity function. These jets can enhance the growth of supermassive black holes and substantially affect their host galaxies. However, the implications would be even more severe if the quasar belongs to the top 10% radio luminous quasars, as measured if the beaming enhancement is less than a factor of 10-15. In this scenario, there should be hundreds to thousands of radio-quiet quasars at z=7 with intrinsic properties similar to J0410-0139 -- in strong tension with the number density of bright quasars derived from their UV luminosity function. To reconcile these results, most black hole growth at z=7 must happen in an obscured phase, as some models predict. The existence of supermassive black holes in the epoch of reionization is facilitated by significant jet-enhanced or obscured super-Eddington accretion.

Abstract:ABSTRACT An ionization front (I-front) that propagates through an inhomogeneous medium is slowed down by self-shielding and recombinations. We perform cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the I-front propagation during the epoch of cosmic reionization. The simulations resolve gas in mini-haloes (halo mass 104 ≲ Mh[M⊙] ≲ 108) that could dominate recombinations, in a computational volume that is large enough to sample the abundance of such haloes. The numerical resolution is sufficient (gas-particle mass ∼20 M⊙ and spatial resolution <0.1 ckpc) to allow accurate modelling of the hydrodynamic response of gas to photoheating. We quantify the photoevaporation time of mini-haloes as a function of Mh and its dependence on the photoionization rate, Γ−12, and the redshift of reionization, zi. The recombination rate can be enhanced over that of a uniform medium by a factor ∼10−20 early on. The peak value increases with Γ−12 and decreases with zi, due to the enhanced contribution from mini-haloes. The clumping factor, cr, decreases to a factor of a few at ∼100 Myr after the passage of the I-front when the mini-haloes have been photoevaporated; this asymptotic value depends only weakly on Γ−12. Recombinations increase the required number of photons per baryon to reionize the Universe by 20 per cent–100 per cent, with the higher value occurring when Γ−12 is high and zi is low. We complement the numerical simulations with simple analytical models for the evaporation rate and the inverse Strömgren layer. The study also demonstrates the proficiency and potential of sph-m1rt to address astrophysical problems in high-resolution cosmological simulations.

The Full Re-Ionization of Helium

Abstract:Observations of resolved HeII Lyman alpha absorption in spectra of two QSO's suggest that the epoch of helium ionization occurred at z~3. Proximity zones in the spectra of the quasars (z=3.18, 3.285) at 304 A resemble Stromgren spheres, suggesting that the intergalactic medium is only singly ionized in helium. We present models of the proximity effect which include the full physics of the ionization, heating and cooling and an accurately simulated inhomogeneous gas distribution. In these models the underdense intergalactic medium is heated to at least 10,000-20,000 K after cooling to as low as a few 1000 K due to cosmological expansion, with higher temperatures achieved farther away from the quasar due to absorption-hardened ionizing spectra. The quasars turn on for a few times 10^7 years with a fairly steady flux output at 228 A comparable to the 304 A flux output directly observed with HST. The recoveries in the spectra occur naturally due to voids in the IGM and may provide a fairly model-independent probe of the baryon density.

Quasar Proximity Zones and Patchy Reionization

Abstract:Lyman-alpha forest absorption spectra towards quasars at z ~ 6 show regions of enhanced transmission close to their source. Several authors have argued that the apparently small sizes of these regions indicate that quasar ionization fronts at z >~ 6 expand into a largely or partly neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Assuming that the typical region in the IGM is reionized by z <= 6, as is suggested by Ly-a forest observations, we argue that at {\em least} 50% of the volume of the IGM was reionized before the highest redshift quasars turned on. Further, even if the IGM is as much as 50% neutral at quasar turn-on, the quasars are likely born into large galaxy-generated HII regions. The HII regions during reionization are themselves clustered, and using radiative transfer simulations, we find that long skewers through the IGM towards quasar progenitor halos pass entirely through ionized bubbles, even when the IGM is half neutral. These effects have been neglected in most previous analyses of quasar proximity zones, which assumed a spatially {\em uniform} neutral fraction. We model the subsequent ionization from a quasar, and construct mock Ly-a forest spectra. Our mock absorption spectra are more sensitive to the level of small-scale structure in the IGM than to the volume-averaged neutral fraction, and suggest that existing proximity-zone size measurements are compatible with a fully ionized IGM. However, we mention several improvements in our modeling that are necessary to make more definitive conclusions.

Nanohertz gravitational waves and primordial quark nuggets from dense QCD matter in the early universe

Abstract:The first-order QCD phase transition at high temperature features a large transition rate in the magnitude of $\beta/H \sim 10^4$ with induced stochastic gravitational waves typically lying in the LISA range. High baryon density in the early universe can be generated through Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. The baryon chemical potential enhances the potential barrier and significantly reduces the transition rate, which decreases from infinity at the critical end point (CEP) to zero at the critical nucleation point (CNP). Nanohertz gravitational waves can be produced in a narrow window of high baryon chemical potential with transition rate in the order of $\beta/H \sim 10^1$. When the phase transition rate reaches zero, the false vacuum of high baryon density quark matter is unlikely to decay and can persist over cosmological time scales. Therefore the primordial quark nuggets (PQN) can form and survive in the early universe as the seeds of compact stars, thereby dramatically accelerating the evolution of compact stars and the formation of galaxies, which may explain the high red-shift massive galaxies observed by the James Webb Space Telescope.

The Equation of State of the Intergalactic Medium After Hydrogen Reionization

Abstract:We use an analytic model to study how inhomogeneous hydrogen reionization affects the temperature distribution of the intergalactic medium (IGM). During this process, the residual energy of each ionizing photon is deposited in the IGM as heat, increasing its temperature to 20,000-30,000 K; subsequent expansion of the Universe then cools the gas. Because reionization most likely proceeds from high to low densities, underdense voids are ionized last, have less time to cool, and are (on average) warmer than mean-density gas immediately after reionization is complete (an "inverted" equation of state). From this initial configuration, the low-density gas cools quickly and eventually returns to a more normal equation of state. The rapidly evolving temperature introduces systematic uncertainties in measurements of the ionizing background at z~6. For example, late reionization implies rapid cooling, so that the ionizing background would have to evolve even more rapidly at z ~5-6 than typically claimed. This degeneracy is difficult to disentangle, because the Lyman-alpha forest probes only a narrow range in densities (over which the gas is nearly isothermal). However, higher Lyman-series transitions probe wider density ranges, sampling different effective temperatures, and offer a new way to measure the IGM equation of state that should work where nearly saturated absorption precludes other methods. This will help to separate evolution in temperature from that in the ionizing background. While more detailed study with hydrodynamic simulations is needed, we show that such measurements could potentially distinguish early and late reionization using only a handful of lines of sight.

Did the Universe Reheat After Recombination?

Abstract:A key assumption of the standard cosmological model is that the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation scales with cosmological redshift $z$ as $T_{\rm CMB}(z) \propto (1+z)$ at all times after recombination at $z_\star \simeq 1090$. However, this assumption has only been precisely tested at $z \lesssim 3$. Here, we consider cosmological models with post-recombination reheating (PRR), in which the CMB monopole temperature abruptly increases due to energy injection after last scattering. Such a scenario can potentially resolve tensions between inferences of the current cosmic expansion rate (the Hubble constant, $H_0$). We consider an explicit model in which a metastable sub-component of dark matter (DM) decays to Standard Model photons, whose spectral energy distribution is assumed to be close to that of the CMB blackbody. A fit to Planck CMB anisotropy, COBE/FIRAS CMB monopole, and SH0ES distance-ladder measurements yields $H_0 = 71.2 \pm 1.1$ km/s/Mpc, matter fluctuation amplitude $S_8 = 0.774 \pm 0.018$, and CMB temperature increase $\delta T_{\rm CMB} = 0.109^{+0.033}_{-0.044}$ K, which is sourced by DM decay at $z \gtrsim 10$. However, matter density constraints from baryon acoustic oscillation and supernovae data highly constrain this scenario, with a joint fit to all datasets yielding $H_0 = 68.69 \pm 0.35$ km/s/Mpc, $S_8 = 0.8035 \pm 0.0081$, and $\delta T_{\rm CMB} < 0.0342$ K (95% CL upper limit). These bounds can be weakened if additional dark relativistic species are present in the early universe, yielding higher $H_0$. We conclude that current data disfavor models with significant PRR solely through its impact on background and linear-theory observables, completely independent of CMB spectral distortion constraints. However, a small amount of such energy injection could play a role in restoring cosmological concordance.

The haloes that reionized the Universe

Abstract:We study the reionization of the Universe due to haloes that host galaxies undergoing bursts of star formation. By comparing the recent results from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) with the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation EAGLE at $z\ge 6$, we find that bursty galaxies have specific star formation rate, sSFR $>10^{-2}$ Myr$^{-1}$, and magnitude, $M_{\rm UV}\leq -17$. Most of them reside in haloes of mass $\sim 10^9$ M$_\odot$ and some in more massive haloes. We then construct the models of escape fraction and find that a skewed Gaussian function with a flat tail towards the high mass end best describes the mean dependence of escape fraction on halo mass, considering the haloes hosting bursty galaxies as the primary drivers of reionization. We implement the models of escape fraction in the code 21cmFAST to study the progress of reionization and derive the evolution of the mean ionized fraction that agrees well with observations. We also calculate the brightness temperature, spin temperature, and kinetic temperature and further study the spatial fluctuations in these quantities to gain insights into the progress of reionization. We compute the 21 cm power spectrum and predict a peak in power at $180$ MHz corresponding to redshift, $z\approx 6.8$, that is testable by the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Our findings suggest that the Universe was reionized by the haloes of $\gtrsim 10^{9}$ M$_\odot$.

The impact and response of minihalos and the inter-halo medium on cosmic reionization

Abstract:An ionization front (I-front) that propagates through an inhomogeneous medium is slowed down by self-shielding and recombinations. We perform cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the I-front propagation during the epoch of cosmic reionization. The simulations resolve gas in minihalos (halo mass $10^4\lesssim M_h[{\rm M}_\odot]\lesssim 10^8)$ that could dominate recombinations, in a computational volume that is large enough to sample the abundance of such halos. The numerical resolution is sufficient (gas particle mass $\sim 20{\rm M}_\odot$, spatial resolution $< 0.1\;{\rm ckpc}$) to allow accurate modelling of the hydrodynamic response of gas to photo-heating. We quantify the photo-evaporation time of minihalos as a function of $M_h$ and its dependence on the photo-ionization rate, $\Gamma_{-12}$, and the redshift of reionization, $z_i$. The recombination rate can be enhanced over that of a uniform medium by a factor $\sim 10-20$ early on. The peak value increases with $\Gamma_{-12}$ and decreases with $z_i$, due to the enhanced contribution from minihalos. The clumping factor, $c_r$, decreases to a factor of a few at $\sim 100\;{\rm Myr}$ after the passage of the I-front when the minihalos have been photo-evaporated; this asymptotic value depends only weakly on $\Gamma_{-12}$. Recombinations increase the required number of photons per baryon to reionize the Universe by 20-100 per cent, with the higher value occurring when $\Gamma_{-12}$ is high and $z_i$ is low. We complement the numerical simulations with simple analytical models for the evaporation rate and the inverse Strömgren layer. The study also demonstrates the proficiency and potential of SPHM1RT to address astrophysical problems in high-resolution cosmological simulations.

Primordial Black Hole Reformation in the Early Universe

Abstract:Primordial black holes (PBH) can arise in a wide range of scenarios, from inflation to first-order phase transitions. Light PBHs, such as those produced during preheating or at the GUT scale, could induce an early matter-dominated phase given a moderate initial abundance. During the early matter-domination, the growth of initial PBH density perturbations can trigger collapse on horizon scales, producing much heavier PBHs. While the remaining original PBHs evaporate and reheat the Universe, these massive reformed PBHs survive for an extended period of time, producing potentially observable signatures at the present. We study this PBH reformation scenario and show that those reformed PBHs can emit significant quantities of gamma rays detectable by the next generation of experiments. The rapid reheating after matter domination generates a coincident stochastic gravitational wave background, which could be within range of the upcoming CMB-S4 experiment. The PBH reformation scenario provides an intriguing possibility of decoupling the current PBH population and the initial formation mechanism from early Universe physics, while providing opportunities for observation through multi-messenger astronomy.

Re-Ionization and its Imprint on the Cosmic Microwave Background

Abstract:Early reionization changes the pattern of anisotropies expected in the cosmic microwave background. To explore these changes, we derive from first principles the equations governing anisotropies, focusing on the interactions of photons with electrons. Vishniac (1987) claimed that second order terms can be large in a re-ionized Universe, so we derive equations correct to second order in the perturbations. There are many more second order terms than were considered by Vishniac. To understand the basic physics involved, we present a simple analytic approximation to the first order equation. Then turning to the sec- ond order equation, we show that the Vishniac term is indeed the only important one. We also present numerical results for a variety of ionization histories [in a standard cold dark matter Universe] and show quantitatively how the sig- nal in several experiments depends on the ionization history. The most pronounced indication of a re-ionized Universe would be seen in very small scale experiments; the expected signal in the Owens Valley experiment is smaller by a factor of order ten if the last scattering surface is at a redshift $z\simeq100$ as it would be if the Universe were re-ionized very early. On slightly larger scales, the expected signal in a re-ionized Universe {\it is} smaller than it would be with standard recombination, but only by a factor of two or so.

Abstract:Improved measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization from Planck allows a detailed study of reionization beyond the average optical depth. The lower value of the optical depth disfavours an early onset and an early completion of reionization in favour of a redsfhit range where different astrophysical probes provide sensible information on the sources of reionization and the status of the intergalactic medium. In this work we extend our previous study in which we constrained reionization by combining three different probes - CMB, UV luminosity density and neutral hydrogen fraction data - in both treatment and data: we first allow variation in the UV source term varying the product of the efficiency of conversion of UV luminosity into ionizing photons and the escape fraction together with the reionization and cosmological parameters, and then we investigate the impact of a less conservative cut for the UV luminosity function. We find that the estimate for the efficiency is consistent within 95% C.L. with the fixed value we considered in our previous results and is mostly constrained by the QHII data. We find that allowing the efficiency to vary does not affect significantly our results for the average optical depth for monotonic reionization histories, recovering $\tau=0.0519_{-0.0008}^{+0.0010}$ at 68% CL , consistent with our previous studies. Using a less conservative cut for the UV luminosity function, we find $\tau=0.0541_{-0.0016}^{+0.0013}$ at 68% CL, due to the faint end of the luminosity function in the data we use, that also prefers a larger contribution from higher redshifts.
