Abstract:This paper further studies the fuzzy rough sets based on fuzzy coverings. We first present the notions of the lower and upper approximation operators based on fuzzy coverings and derive their basic properties. To facilitate the computation of fuzzy coverings for fuzzy covering rough sets, the concepts of fuzzy subcoverings, the reducible and intersectional elements, the union and intersection operations are provided and their properties are discussed in detail. Afterwards, we introduce the concepts of consistent functions and fuzzy covering mappings and provide a basic theoretical foundation for the communication between fuzzy covering information systems. In addition, the notion of homomorphisms is proposed to reveal the relationship between fuzzy covering information systems. We show how large-scale fuzzy covering information systems and dynamic fuzzy covering information systems can be converted into small-scale ones by means of homomorphisms. Finally, an illustrative example is employed to show that the attribute reduction can be simplified significantly by our proposed approach.

Abstract:As the matrix can compactly represent numeric data, simplify problem formulation and reduce time complexity, it has many applications in most of the scientific fields. For this purpose, some types of generalized rough sets have been connected with matrices. However, covering-based rough sets which play an important role in data mining and machine learning are seldom connected with matrices. In this paper, we define three composition operations of coverings and study their characteristic matrices; Moreover, the relationships between the characteristic matrices and covering approximation operators are investigated. First, for a covering, an existing matrix representation of indiscernible neighborhoods called the type-1 characteristic matrix of the covering is recalled and a new matrix representation of neighborhoods called the type-2 characteristic matrix of the covering is proposed. Second, considering the importance of knowledge fusion and decomposition, we define three types of composition operations of coverings. Specifically, their type-1 and type-2 characteristic matrices are studied. Finally, we also explore the representable properties of covering approximation operators with respect to any covering generated by each composition operation. It is interesting to find that three types of approximation operators, which are induced by each type of composition operation of coverings, can be expressed as the Boolean product of a coefficient matrix and a characteristic vector. These interesting results suggest the potential for studying covering-based rough sets by matrix approaches.

Abstract:Aimed at the rough set theory cannot be directly applied to deal with continuous attributes, a rough set based on modified ChiMerge algorithm is presented. The basic concepts of the rough set theory and the modified ChiMerge algorithm are introduced and adequately illustrated firstly. The modified ChiMerge algorithm presents a stop criterion without needing experience compared to ChiMerge algorithm. The additional information can be eliminated and the rules can be extracted directly from data based on rough set theory after continuous values are discretized by modified ChiMerge algorithm. Finally the rough set theory based on modified ChiMerge algorithm is applied to a QSAR (quantitative structure activity relationships) problem, the results show that the algorithm is a useful tool for the analysis of continuous, inexact, uncertain, or vague data.

Abstract:Rough sets were proposed to deal with the vagueness and incompleteness of knowledge in information systems. There are may optimization issues in this field such as attribute reduction. Matroids generalized from matrices are widely used in optimization. Therefore, it is necessary to connect matroids with rough sets. In this paper, we take field into consideration and introduce matrix to study rough sets through vector matroids. First, a matrix representation of an equivalence relation is proposed, and then a matroidal structure of rough sets over a field is presented by the matrix. Second, the properties of the matroidal structure including circuits, bases and so on are studied through two special matrix solution spaces, especially null space. Third, over a binary field, we construct an equivalence relation from matrix null space, and establish an algebra isomorphism from the collection of equivalence relations to the collection of sets, which any member is a family of the minimal non-empty sets that are supports of members of null space of a binary dependence matrix. In a word, matrix provides a new viewpoint to study rough sets.

Abstract:Up-directed rough sets are introduced and studied by the present author in earlier papers. This is extended by her in two different granular directions in this research, with a surprising algebraic semantics. The granules are based on ideas of generalized closure under up-directedness that may be read as a form of weak consequence. This yields approximation operators that satisfy cautious monotony, while pi-groupoidal approximations (that additionally involve strategic choice and algebraic operators) have nicer properties. The study is primarily motivated by possible structure of concepts in distributed cognition perspectives, real or virtual classroom learning contexts, and student-centric teaching. Rough clustering techniques for datasets that involve up-directed relations (as in the study of Sentinel project image data) are additionally proposed. This research is expected to see significant theoretical and practical applications in related domains.
On Matrix Representation of Three Types of Covering-Based Rough Sets

Abstract:Rough set theory is a useful tool for dealing with inexact, uncertain or vague knowledge of information systems. The core concepts of classical rough sets are lower and upper approximation operators based on equivalence relations. However, it is inefficient to compute the lower and upper approximations using set operations. Matrix is widely used in scientific computation. In this paper, three types of covering-based rough set operators are represented through matrix. In the first part, a matrix representation of a covering is given. Moreover, in order to construct a matrix representation of a neighborhood, two operators are introduced. Then the relationship of the matrix representation of a neighborhood between a covering and its reduct is studied. In the second part, three types of lower and upper approximation operators based on neighborhood are represented by matrix. Moreover, the relationship among them is also discussed. In a word, the matrix representation provides a new and effective approach to the computation of approximation operators in rough sets.

Abstract:An orthogonal approach to the fuzzification of both multisets and hybrid sets is presented. In particular, we introduce L-multi-fuzzy and L-fuzzy hybrid sets, which are general enough and in spirit with the basic concepts of fuzzy set theory. In addition, we study the properties of these structures. Also, the usefulness of these structures is examined in the framework of mechanical multiset processing. More specifically, we introduce a variant of fuzzy P systems and, since simple fuzzy membrane systems have been introduced elsewhere, we simply extend previously stated results and ideas.

Abstract:The soft and rough set theories have a great importance in literature to deal vagueness and uncertainty, but both the theories are unable to deal the vagueness and uncertainty with multipolar information in multi-criteria decision-making. Hybrid models always provide more precise and accurate results in multi-criteria decision making. Thus in this research article, we present a novel frame work for handling multi-criteria decision-making by combining the theory of mF sets with rough sets and soft sets to introduce the novel models called mF rough set model and soft mF rough set model, which approximate the data under multipolar information. Further, we explain the fundamental operations of mF rough sets including union, intersection, composition, and investigate some of their properties. We also study some operations of soft mF rough sets. Moreover, we explore potential applications of mF rough sets and soft mF rough sets in multi-criteria decision-making. We also develop algorithms of our proposed hybrid models to solve multi-criteria decision-making problems.

Abstract:Covering-based rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with inexact, uncertain, or vague knowledge in information systems. Geometric lattice has been widely used in diverse fields, especially search algorithm design, which plays an important role in covering reductions. In this paper, we construct three geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets through matroids and study the relationship among them. First, a geometric lattice structure of covering-based rough sets is established through the transversal matroid induced by a covering. Then its characteristics, such as atoms, modular elements, and modular pairs, are studied. We also construct a one-to-one correspondence between this type of geometric lattices and transversal matroids in the context of covering-based rough sets. Second, we present three sufficient and necessary conditions for two types of covering upper approximation operators to be closure operators of matroids. We also represent two types of matroids through closure axioms and then obtain two geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets. Third, we study the relationship among these three geometric lattice structures. Some core concepts such as reducible elements in covering-based rough sets are investigated with geometric lattices. In a word, this work points out an interesting view, namely, geometric lattice, to study covering-based rough sets.

Abstract:Multigranulation rough set is a new expansion of the classical rough set since the former uses a family of the binary relations instead of single one for the constructing of approximations. In this paper, the model of the variable precision rough set is introduced into the multigranulation environment and then the concept of the variable precision multigranulation rough set is proposed, which include optimistic and pessimistic cases. Not only basic properties of variable precision multigranulation rough set are investigated, but also the relationships among variable precision rough set, multigranulation rough set and variable precision multigranulation rough set are examined. Finally, a heuristic algorithm is presented for computing reducts of variable precision multigranulation rough set, it is also tested on five UCI data sets.

Abstract:The fuzzy set is an excellent solution for dealing with ambiguity and for expressing people’s hesitation in regular life. Soft set theory is an innovative method for solving practical issues. This is useful in resolving a number of problems, and a lot of progress is being made at the moment. In order to develop hybrid structures, Jun et al. fused the fuzzy and soft sets. In this paper, the notion of hybrid bi-ideals in near-subtraction semigroups is proposed and their associated results are discussed. The notion of hybrid intersections is examined. Furthermore, we establish some results related to the homomorphic image and preimage of a hybrid bi-ideal in near-subtraction semigroups.

Abstract:This research introduces innovative rough approximation techniques for multidimensional fuzzy sets by integrating rough sets and multidimensional fuzzy sets. Departing from traditional methods that rely on predefined equivalence relations to delineate rough spaces, we propose a novel approach utilizing a function termed the 'convenient function'. The values generated by this function facilitate the establishment of lower and upper estimations, enhancing the precision of rough approximations. The adept utilization of the parameter , in conjunction with a multidimensional distance measure, allows for the attainment of desirable approximations within specified bandwidths. Additionally, we explore a more generalized version of approximation, known as - approximation, along with its associated properties, thereby expanding the applicability and flexibility of the proposed methodology. Finally, we present a comprehensive case study demonstrating the efficacy of the approximation methodology in real-world decision-making processes, highlighting its practical utility and effectiveness.

Generalized mixed and primal hybrid methods with applications to plate bending

Abstract:We present an extended framework for hybrid finite element approximations of self-adjoint, positive definite operators. It covers the cases of primal, mixed, and ultraweak formulations, both at the continuous and discrete levels, and gives rise to conforming discretizations. Our framework allows for flexible continuity restrictions across elements, and includes the extreme cases of conforming and discontinuous hybrid methods. We illustrate an application of the framework to the Kirchhoff-Love plate pending model and present three primal hybrid and two mixed hybrid methods, four of them with numerical examples. In particular, we present conforming frameworks for (in classical meaning) non-conforming elements of Morley, Zienkiewicz triangular, and Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson types.

Abstract:The classical rough set theory based on complete information systems stems from the observation that objects with the same characteristics are indiscernible according to available information. With respect to upper-approximation and lower-approximation defined on an indiscernibility relation it classifies objects into different equivalent classes. But in some cases such a rigid indiscernibility relation is far from applications in the real world. Therefore, several generalizations of the rough set theory have been proposed some of which extend the indiscernibility relation using more general similarity or tolerance relations. For example, Kryszkiewicz [4] studied a tolerance relation, and Stefanowski [7] explored a non-symmetric, similarity relation and valued tolerance relation. Unfortunately, All the extensions mentioned above have their inherent limitations. In this paper, after discussing several extension models based on rough sets for incomplete information, a concept of constrained dissymmetrical similarity relation is introduced as a new extension of the rough set theory, the upper-approximation and the lower-approximation defined on constrained similarity relation are proposed as well. Furthermore, we present the comparison between the performance of these extended relations. Analysis of results shows that this relation works effectively in incomplete information and generates rational object classification

Abstract:The classical rough set theory is based on complete information systems. The starting point of the rough sets theory is an observation that objects having the same description are indiscernible with respect to the available information. It classifies objects using upper-approximation and lower-approximation defined on an indiscernibility relation that is a kind of equivalent relation. But the indiscernibility relation may be too rigid in some situations. Therefore several generalizations of the rough sets theory have been proposed. Abstract:In the context of general rough sets, the act of combining two things to form another is not straightforward. The situation is similar for other theories that concern uncertainty and vagueness. Such acts can be endowed with additional meaning that go beyond structural conjunction and disjunction as in the theory of $*$-norms and associated implications over $L$-fuzzy sets. In the present research, algebraic models of acts of combining things in generalized rough sets over lattices with approximation operators (called rough convenience lattices) is invented. The investigation is strongly motivated by the desire to model skeptical or pessimistic, and optimistic or possibilistic aggregation in human reasoning, and the choice of operations is constrained by the perspective. Fundamental results on the weak negations and implications afforded by the minimal models are proved. In addition, the model is suitable for the study of discriminatory/toxic behavior in human reasoning, and of ML algorithms learning such behavior.

Abstract:The multiple attribute mixed type decision making is performed by four methods, that is, the relative approach degree of grey TOPSIS method, the relative approach degree of grey incidence, the relative membership degree of grey incidence and the grey relation relative approach degree method using the maximum entropy estimation, respectively. In these decision making methods, the grey incidence degree in four-dimensional Euclidean space is used. The final arrangement result is obtained by weighted Borda method. An example illustrates the applicability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In rough set theory, we distinguish confirmed and possible data, extracted through subsets utilizing lower and upper approximations, respectively. Earlier studies have presented several rough approximation models, drawing inspiration from neighborhood systems, aimed at enhancing accuracy degree and satisfying the axioms of standard approximation space, introduced by Pawlak. In this article, we first introduce novel rough neighborhoods so-called overlapping containment rough neighborhoods, denoted by -neighborhoods, using inclusion relations between -neighborhoods and -neighborhoods, as well as -neighborhoods and -neighborhoods, all defined under an arbitrary relation. We explore their main characterizations and reveal the relationships between them under specific types of binary relations, such as symmetric, transitive, and partial order relations. As a unique contribution, we successfully derive an indicator inspired by -neighborhoods for to determine whether a relation is symmetric. Additionally, we describe the behavior of -neighborhoods as they navigate between two generalized approximation spaces, where the relations are reflexive and transitive, and one is a subset of the other. Then, we exploit -neighborhoods to present fresh rough set models. We examine their main properties and demonstrate that they keep most characterizations of Pawlak's paradigm while reducing the uncertainty in the data compared to some previous studies, also, we show that they satisfy the monstrosity property under quasi-order relations. To elucidate the superiority and accuracy of the present approach, we apply it to analyze the information systems related to the authorship of articles and books by selected authors and conduct a comparative analysis with several preceding approaches. Finally, a summary of the obtained results and relationships and suggestion for some forthcoming work are offered.

Is Knowledge Maintenance an AdequateResponse to the Challenge of Situated Cognitionfor Symbolic Knowledge Based Systems ?

Abstract:Situated cognition (SC) and knowledge maintenance are intimately connected. We say that SC motivates research into KM and KM assess SC. If knowledge is situated, then a symbolic KB will require modiica-tion as the situation changes. However, if we could demonstrate that the 5 process of change dictated by SC is tamed via current KM tools, then the case for concerning ourselves with SC becomes weak. We argue here that (i) there is enough evidence to support the view that SC is a very strong motivation for KM; but (ii) there is not enough evidence to support the view that KM has tamed the problem of SC. That is, the current gener-10 ation of KM tools may be an inadequate response to the challenge of SC for symbolic knowledge based systems.
