Abstract:We present a new method to calculate Lyapunov exponents of rigid diatomic molecules in three dimensions (12N dimensional phase space). The spectra of Lyapunov exponents are obtained for 32 rigid diatomic molecules interacting through the Weeks-Chandler-Anderson(WCA) potential for various bond length and densities, and compared with those in Y.-H. Shin et al. [Phys. Rev. E 64, 041106 (2001)]. Our algorithm is easy to implement and total CPU time is relatively inexpensive.

Lyapunov instabilities of Lennard-Jones fluids

Abstract:Recent work on many particle system reveals the existence of regular collective perturbations corresponding to the smallest positive Lyapunov exponents (LEs), called hydrodynamic Lyapunov modes. Until now, however, these modes are only found for hard core systems. Here we report new results on Lyapunov spectra and Lyapunov vectors (LVs) for Lennard-Jones fluids. By considering the Fourier transform of the coordinate fluctuation density $u^{(\alpha)}(x,t)$, it is found that the LVs with $\lambda \approx 0$ are highly dominated by a few components with low wave-numbers. These numerical results provide strong evidence that hydrodynamic Lyapunov modes do exist in soft-potential systems, although the collective Lyapunov modes are more vague than in hard-core systems. In studying the density and temperature dependence of these modes, it is found that, when the value of Lyapunov exponent $\lambda^{(\alpha)}$ is plotted as function of the dominant wave number $k_{max}$ of the corresponding LV, all data from simulations with different densities and temperatures collapse onto a single curve. This shows that the dispersion relation $\lambda^{(\alpha)}$ vs. $k_{max}$ for hydrodynamical Lyapunov modes appears to be universal irrespective of the particle density and temperature of the system. Despite the wave-like character of the LVs, no step-like structure exists in the Lyapunov spectrum of the systems studied here, in contrast to the hard-core case. Further numerical simulations show that the finite-time LEs fluctuate strongly. We have also investigated localization features of LVs and propose a new length scale to characterize the Hamiltonian spatio-temporal chaotic states.

Universal scaling at non-thermal fixed points of a two-component Bose gas

Abstract:Quasi-stationary far-from-equilibrium critical states of a two-component Bose gas are studied in two spatial dimensions. After the system has undergone an initial dynamical instability it approaches a non-thermal fixed point. At this critical point the structure of the gas is characterised by ensembles of (quasi-)topological defects such as vortices, skyrmions and solitons which give rise to universal power-law behaviour of momentum correlation functions. The resulting power-law spectra can be interpreted in terms of strong-wave-turbulence cascades driven by particle transport into long-wave-length excitations. Scaling exponents are determined on both sides of the miscible-immiscible transition controlled by the ratio of the intra-species to inter-species couplings. Making use of quantum turbulence methods, we explain the specific values of the exponents from the presence of transient (quasi-)topological defects.

Focusing dynamics of 2D Bose gases in the instability regime

Abstract:We consider the dynamics of a 2D Bose gas with an interaction potential of the form $N^{2\beta-1}w(N^\beta\cdot)$ for $\beta\in (0,3/2)$. The interaction may be chosen to be negative and large, leading to the instability regime where the corresponding focusing cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (NLS) may blow up in finite time. We show that to leading order, the $N$-body quantum dynamics can be effectively described by the NLS prior to the blow-up time. Moreover, we prove the validity of the Bogoliubov approximation, where the excitations from the condensate are captured in a norm approximation of the many-body dynamics.

Density ordering instabilities of quasi-two-dimensional fermionic polar molecules in single-layer and multi-layer configurations: exact treatment of exchange interactions

Abstract:We study the in-plane and out-of-plane density ordering instabilities of quasi-two-dimensional fermionic polar molecules in single-layer and multi-layer configurations. We locate the soft modes by evaluating linear response functions within the conserving time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF). The short-range exchange effects are taken into account by solving the Bethe-Salpeter integral equation numerically. An instability phase diagram is calculated for both single-layer and multi-layer systems and the unstable wave-vector is indicated. In all cases, the in-plane density wave instability is found to precede the out-of-plane instability. The unstable wave-vector is found to be approximately twice the Fermi wave-vector of one of the subbands at a time and can change discontinuously as a function of density and dipolar interaction strength. In multi-layer configurations, we find a large enhancement of density wave instability driven by dilute quasiparticles in the first excited subband. Finally, we provide a simple qualitative description of the phase diagrams using a RPA-like approach. Compared to previous works done within the RPA approximation, we find that inclusion of exchange interactions stabilize the normal liquid phase further and increase the critical dipolar interaction strength corresponding to the onset of density-wave instability by over a factor of two.

Limits of structure stability of simple liquids revealed by study of relative fluctuations

Abstract:We analyse the inverse reduced fluctuations (inverse ratio of relative volume fluctuation to its value in the hypothetical case where the substance acts an ideal gas for the same temperature-volume parameters) for simple liquids from experimental acoustic and thermophysical data along a coexistence line for both liquid and vapour phases. It has been determined that this quantity has a universal exponential character within the region close to the melting point. This behaviour satisfies the predictions of the mean-field (grand canonical ensemble) lattice fluid model and relates to the constant average structure of a fluid, i.e. redistribution of the free volume complementary to a number of vapour particles. The interconnection between experiment-based fluctuational parameters and self-diffusion characteristics is discussed. These results may suggest experimental methods for determination of self-diffusion and structural properties of real substances.

Generic transverse stability of kink structures in atomic and optical nonlinear media with competing attractive and repulsive interactions

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence and stability of one-dimensional (1D) topological kink configurations immersed in higher-dimensional bosonic gases and nonlinear optical setups. Our analysis pertains, in particular, to the two- and three-dimensional extended Gross-Pitaevskii models with quantum fluctuations describing droplet-bearing environments but also to the two-dimensional cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation containing higher-order corrections to the nonlinear refractive index. Contrary to the generic dark soliton transverse instability, the kink structures are generically robust under the interplay of low-amplitude attractive and high-amplitude repulsive interactions. A quasi-1D effective potential picture dictates the existence of these defects, while their stability is obtained through linearization analysis and direct dynamics in the presence of external fluctuations showcasing their unprecedented resilience. These generic (across different models) findings should be detectable in current cold atom and optics experiments. They also offer insights towards controlling topological excitations and their usage in topological quantum computers.

Tuning the structural and dynamical properties of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate: Ripples and instability islands

Abstract:It is now well established that the stability of aligned dipolar Bose gases can be tuned by varying the aspect ratio of the external harmonic confinement. This paper extends this idea and demonstrates that a Gaussian barrier along the strong confinement direction can be employed to tune both the structural properties and the dynamical stability of an oblate dipolar Bose gas aligned along the strong confinement direction. In particular, our theoretical mean-field analysis predicts the existence of instability islands immersed in otherwise stable regions of the phase diagram. Dynamical studies indicate that these instability islands, which can be probed experimentally with present-day technology, are associated with the going soft of a Bogoliubov--de Gennes excitation frequency with radial breathing mode character. Furthermore, we find dynamically stable ground state densities with ripple-like oscillations along the radial direction. These structured ground states exist in the vicinity of a dynamical radial roton-like instability.

Spinor-Induced Instability of Kinks, Holes and Quantum Droplets

Abstract:We address the existence and stability of one-dimensional (1D) holes and kinks and two-dimensional (2D) vortex-holes nested in extended binary Bose mixtures, which emerge in the presence of Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum corrections to the mean-field energy, along with self-bound quantum droplets. We consider both the symmetric system with equal intra-species scattering lengths and atomic masses, modeled by a single (scalar) LHY-corrected Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), and the general asymmetric case with different intra-species scattering lengths, described by two coupled (spinor) GPEs. We found that in the symmetric setting, 1D and 2D holes can exist in a stable form within a range of chemical potentials that overlaps with that of self-bound quantum droplets, but that extends far beyond it. In this case, holes are found to be stable in 1D and they transform into pairs of stable out-of-phase kinks at the critical chemical potential at which localized droplets turn into flat-top states, thereby revealing the connection between localized and extended nonlinear states. In contrast, spinor nature of the asymmetric systems may lead to instability of 1D holes, which tend to break into two gray states moving in the opposite directions. Such instability arises due to spinor nature of the system and it affects only holes nested in extended modulationally-stable backgrounds, while localized quantum droplet families remain completely stable, even in the asymmetric case, while 1D holes remain stable only close to the point where they transform into pairs of kinks. We also found that symmetric systems allow fully stable 2D vortex-carrying single-charge states at moderate amplitudes, while unconventional instabilities appear also at high amplitudes. Symmetry also strongly inhibits instabilities for double-charge vortex-holes, which thus exhibit unexpectedly robust evolutions at low amplitudes.

Spin-Peierls instability of the U(1) Dirac spin liquid

Abstract:A complicating factor in the realization and observation of quantum spin liquids in materials is the ubiquitous presence of other degrees of freedom, in particular lattice distortion modes (phonons). These provide additional routes for relieving magnetic frustration, thereby possibly destabilizing spin-liquid ground states. In this work, we focus on triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets, where recent numerical evidence suggests the presence of an extended U(1) Dirac spin liquid phase which is described by compact quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED$_3$), featuring gapless spinons and monopoles as gauge excitations, and believed to flow to a strongly-coupled fixed point with conformal symmetry. Using complementary perturbation theory and scaling arguments, we show that a symmetry-allowed coupling between (classical) finite-wavevector lattice distortions and monopole operators of the U(1) Dirac spin liquid generally induces a spin-Peierls instability towards a (confining) 12-site valence-bond solid state. We support our theoretical analysis with state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group simulations. Away from the limit of static distortions, we demonstrate that the phonon energy gap establishes a parameter regime where the spin liquid is expected to be stable, and show that the monopole-lattice coupling leads to softening of the phonon in analogy to the Kohn anomaly. We discuss the applicability of our results to similar systems, in particular the Dirac spin liquid on the Kagome lattice.

The instability of a membrane enclosed by two viscous fluids with a free surface

Abstract:This study examines the stability of a flexible material interface between two fluids of the same viscosity in interaction with a free surface. When the layers are motionless, we provide evidence for the onset of a novel instability by means of analytical and numerical solution of the associated boundary value problem in the region stable against Rayleigh--Taylor instability, i.e. when the acceleration due to gravity acts from the lighter to the heavier fluid. This destabilisation phenomenon is attributed to the non-conservative tangential forces acting at the interface and the fluid-structure interaction. Furthermore, we examine the scenario in which an external forcing mechanism induces a monotonic parallel shear flow within the upper layer. In addition to the long-established inflectional instability predicted in the inviscid limit, we demonstrate the existence of membrane flutter in the absence of density stratification. The latter is either due to an over-reflection process of surface gravity waves or to the growth of Tollmien--Schlichting waves, as outlined in the context of boundary-layer theory. This fluid-structure configuration represents a paradigmatic model for investigating the interplay between inflectional, radiation-induced and shear-induced instabilities. It also serves as a viscous counterpart to the classical Kelvin--Helmholtz instability when layers with distinct densities are assumed.

Abstract:Application of the "hairy ball theorem" to the analysis of the surface instabilities inherent for liquid/vapor interfaces is reported. When a continuous tangential velocity field exists on the surface of the liquid sample which is homeomorphic to a ball, zero velocity points will be necessarily present at the surface. The theorem is exemplified with the analysis of the instability occurring under the rapid evaporation of polymer solutions. Zero velocity points, accumulating pores, enable direct visualization of the instability. The patterning may be essentially different on the surface of a torus.

Abstract:Significance Long-wavelength elastic modes, which have an infinitesimal energy cost, destroy the long-range translational order of 2D solids at finite temperatures. Here we demonstrate that these long-wavelength fluctuations also influence the dynamical properties of 2D systems in their normal liquid regimes. Hence, long-wavelength fluctuations make 2- and 3D molecular particulate systems behave differently from high- to very low-temperature regimes.
Modulational instability in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the modulational instability of plane wave solutions within a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation framework. The equation features cubic and quartic nonlinearity. It models the behaviour of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in symmetric Bose-Bose mixtures of ultra-dilute cold atoms. Our study demonstrates the pivotal role of the competition between mean-field attractions and quantum fluctuation-induced repulsions. This competition significantly affects the emergence and evolution of modulational instability. By employing linear stability analysis, we identify the essential conditions that lead to modulational instability. We find that the stability of plane wave solutions significantly depends on the interaction among system parameters. Further development of the instability leads to the fragmentation of the BEC into a chain of quantum droplets. We calculated the quantity of quantum droplets generated during the nonlinear phase of the instability. Our analytical results are corroborated by numerical simulations of the modified quasi-1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. These simulations vividly depict the formation, interaction, and coalescence of droplets during the nonlinear phase of modulational instability. The investigation shows that linear stability analysis of the modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation, considering quantum fluctuations, precisely forecasts modulational instability phenomena across different domains of parameter spaces.

Abstract:This study examines the Lyapunov stability under coordinate $q$-contraction and $q$-dilatation in three dynamical systems: the discrete-time dissipative Hénon map, and the conservative, non-integrable, continuous-time Hénon-Heiles and diamagnetic Kepler problems. The stability analysis uses the $q$-deformed Jacobian and $q$-derivative, with trajectory stability assessed for $q > 1$ (dilatation) and $q < 1$ (contraction). Analytical curves in the parameter space mark boundaries of distinct low-periodic motions in the Hénon map. Numerical simulations compute the maximal Lyapunov exponent across the parameter space, in Poincaré surfaces of section, and as a function of total energy in the conservative systems. Simulations show that $q$-contraction ($q$-dilatation) generally decreases (increases) positive Lyapunov exponents relative to the $q = 1$ case, while both transformations tend to increase Lyapunov exponents for regular orbits. Some exceptions to this trend remain unexplained regarding Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) tori stability.

Abstract:We discuss the properties of a one-dimensional lattice model of a driven system with two species of particles in which the mobility of one species depends on the density of the other. This model was introduced by Lahiri and Ramaswamy ( Phys . Rev. Lett ., 79 , 1150 (1997)) in the context of sedimenting colloidal crystals, and its continuum version was shown to exhibit an instability arising from linear gradient couplings. In this paper we review recent progress in understanding the full phase diagram of the model. There are three phases. In the first, the steady state can be determined exactly along a representative locus using the condition of detailed balance. The system shows phase separation of an exceptionally robust sort, termed strong phase separation, which survives at all temperatures. The second phase arises in the threshold case where the first species evolves independently of the second, but the fluctuations of the first influence the evolution of the second, as in the passive scalar problem. The second species then shows phase separation of a delicate sort, in which long-range order coexists with fluctuations which do not damp down in the large-size limit. This fluctuation-dominated phase ordering is associated with power law decays in cluster size distributions and a breakdown of the Porod law. The third phase is one with a uniform overall density, and along a representative locus the steady state is shown to have product measure form. Density fluctuations are transported by two kinematic waves, each involving both species and coupled at the nonlinear level. Their dissipation properties are governed by the symmetries of these couplings, which depend on the overall densities. In the most interesting case, the dissipation of the two modes is characterized by different critical exponents, despite the nonlinear coupling.

Phonon Stability of Quantum Droplets in Dipolar Bose Gases

Abstract:Stabilized by quantum fluctuations, dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates can form self-bound liquid-like droplets. However in the Bogoliubov theory, there are imaginary phonon energies in the long-wavelength limit, implying dynamical instability of this system. A similar instability appears in the Bogoliubov theory of a binary quantum droplet, and is removed due to higher-order quantum fluctuations as shown recently [Gu Q and Yin L 2020 Phys. Rev. B 102 220503(R)]. We study the excitation energy of a dipolar quantum droplet in the Beliaev formalism, and find that quantum fluctuations significantly enhance the phonon stability. We adopt a self-consistent approach without the problem of complex excitation energy in the Bogoliubov theory, and obtain a stable anisotropic sound velocity which is consistent with the superfluid hydrodynamic theory, but slightly different from the result of the extended Gross–Pitaevskii equation due to quantum depletion. A modified Gross–Pitaevskii equation in agreement with the Beliaev theory is proposed, which takes the effect of quantum fluctuations into account more completely.

On non-stability of one-dimensional non-periodic ground states

Abstract:We address the problem of stability of one-dimensional non-periodic ground-state configurations with respect to finite-range perturbations of interactions in classical lattice-gas models. We show that a relevant property of non-periodic ground-state configurations in this context is their homogeneity. The so-called strict boundary condition says that the number of finite patterns of a configuration have bounded fluctuations on any finite subsets of the lattice. We show that if the strict boundary condition is not satisfied, then in order for non-periodic ground-state configurations to be stable, interactions between particles should not decay faster than $1/r^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha>2$. In the Thue-Morse ground state, number of finite patterns may fluctuate as much as the logarithm of the lenght of a lattice subset. We show that the Thue-Morse ground state is unstable for any $\alpha >1$ with respect to arbitrarily small two-body interactions favoring the presence of molecules consisting of two spins up or down. We also investigate Sturmian systems defined by irrational rotations on the circle. They satisfy the strict boundary condition but nevertheless they are unstable for $\alpha>3$.

Free boundary problem for a gas bubble in a liquid, and exponential stability of the manifold of spherically symmetric equilibria

Abstract:We consider the dynamics of a gas bubble immersed in an incompressible fluid of fixed temperature, and focus on the relaxation of an expanding and contracting spherically symmetric bubble due to thermal effects. We study two models, both systems of PDEs with an evolving free boundary: the full mathematical model as well as an approximate model, arising for example in the study of sonoluminescence. For fixed physical parameters (surface tension of the gas-liquid interface, liquid viscosity, thermal conductivity of the gas, etc.), both models share a family of spherically symmetric equilibria, smoothly parametrized by the mass of the gas bubble. Our main result concerns the approximate model. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the manifold of equilibria with respect to small spherically symmetric perturbations. The rate of convergence is exponential in time. To prove this result we first prove a weak form of nonlinear asymptotic stability -- with no explicit rate of time-decay -- using the energy dissipation law, and then, via a center manifold analysis, bootstrap the weak time-decay to exponential time-decay. We also study the uniqueness of the family of spherically symmetric equilibria within each model. The family of spherically symmetric equilibria captures all regular spherically symmetric equilibria of the approximate system. However within the full model, this family is embedded in a larger family of spherically symmetric solutions. For the approximate system, we prove that all equilibrium bubbles are spherically symmetric, by an application of Alexandrov's theorem on closed surfaces of constant mean curvature.
