Abstract:Processes and strengths of the ocean's biological carbon pump are significant to the study of ocean carbon cycle. However, the development and the utilization of the ocean's biological carbon pump are greatly limited because of human's limited knowledge of the ocean. Remote sensing methods have played important roles in understanding and exploring the ocean, and the lidar is one of the most outstanding representatives for its high spatial and temporal resolution, especially the ability of the vertical detection. High-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) employs an ultra-narrow spectral filter to separate scattering signals between particles and water molecules without assuming a lidar ratio, and obtains the optical properties of the ocean with a high accuracy. Nevertheless, the complexity of the seawater causes variable optical properties, which gives huge potentiality to develop the HSRL working at different wavelengths in order to promote the inversion accuracy and increase the detection depth. The field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI), whose central transmittance can be tuned to any wavelength, can be employed as the HSRL spectral filter and solve the problem that the operating wavelength of the iodine filter cannot change. Moreover, the FWMI has a very large field of view, which gives its superiority over Fabry-Perot interferometer that is an another popular HSRL filter. The principle of the HSRL based on the FWMI designing for the ocean remote sensing will be presented in detail. Furthermore, the availability of the application of the FWMI influenced by the disturbance of the states of Brillouin scattering is analyzed and the preliminary theory shows that the HSRL instrument basing on FWMI could be employed in the marine remote sensing with a high accuracy.

Abstract:The research and protection of the ocean ecosystem are key works to maintain the marine status and develop marine functions. However, human’s knowledge about the ocean is greatly limited. Now, in situ, acoustic and remote sensing methods have been applied in the research to understand and explore the ocean. Abstract:The oceanic lidar, which has the advantage of profiling the properties of the upper ocean, is a promising active remote sensing tool for complementing the passive ocean color remote sensing in the three-dimensional observation of ocean. This paper introduces the design and validation of a shipborne multiple-field-of-view (MFOV) lidar. With the input of simultaneous in situ data, the lidar signals and the retrieved lidar attenuation coefficient alpha are validated quantitatively using simulation results. The simulation methods include quasi-single-scattering lidar equation, Monte Carlo (MC) method, and analytical model. The experimental lidar signals are consistent with the simulated lidar signals with coefficient of determination R-2 >0.91, and alpha retrieved from experimental lidar signals corresponds well with the simulated values with root mean square (RMS) of relative error delta<0.18. The results at different field of view (FOV) indicate the relationship between the beam attenuation coefficient c, diffuse attenuation coefficient K-d , and alpha. Abstract:A high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) is proposed to retrieve the seawater volume scattering function at the 180° scattering angle βπ without the assumption of the lidar extinction-to-backscatter ratio. A field-widened Michelson interferometer is employed as the ultra-narrow spectral discriminator to reject particulate scattering and molecular Rayleigh scattering but transmit molecular Mandelshtam-Brillouin scattering. The theoretical framework to retrieve βπ is presented in detail based on a dual-channel HSRL configuration. Simulation on the retrieval and error estimation shows that, the proposed oceanographic HSRL based on the ship or aircraft can perform well to extract the profile of βπ and has a real potential in the oceanographic remote sensing.

Abstract:Depth-resolved information is essential for ocean research. For this study, we developed a shipborne photon-counting lidar for depth-resolved oceanic plankton observation. A pulsed fiber laser with frequency doubling to 532 nm acts as a light source, generating a single pulse at the micro-joule level with a pulse width of less than 1 ns. The receiver is capable of simultaneously detecting the elastic signal at two orthogonal polarization states, the Raman scattering from seawater, and the fluorescence signal from chlorophyll A. The data acquisition system utilizes the photon-counting technique to record each photon event, after which the backscattering signal intensity can be recovered by counting photons from multiple pulses. Benefitting from the immunity of this statistical detection method to the ringing effect of the detector and amplifier circuit, high-sensitivity and high-linearity backscatter signal measurements are realized. In this paper, we analyze and correct the after-pulse phenomenon of high-linearity signals through experiments and theoretical simulations. Through the after-pulse correction, the lidar attenuation coefficient retrieved from the corrected signal are in good agreement with the diffuse attenuation coefficients calculated from the in situ instrument, indicating the potential of this shipborne photon-counting lidar for ocean observation applications.

Abstract:Spaceborne lidar (light detection and ranging) is a very promising tool for the optical properties of global atmosphere and ocean detection. Although some studies have shown spaceborne lidar’s potential in ocean application, there is no spaceborne lidar specifically designed for ocean studies at present. In order to investigate the detection mechanism of the spaceborne lidar and analyze its detection performance, a spaceborne oceanic lidar simulator is established based on the semianalytic Monte Carlo (MC) method. The basic principle, the main framework, and the preliminary results of the simulator are presented. The whole process of the laser emitting, transmitting, and receiving is executed by the simulator with specific atmosphere–ocean optical properties and lidar system parameters. It is the first spaceborne oceanic lidar simulator for both atmosphere and ocean. The abilities of this simulator to characterize the effect of multiple scattering on the lidar signals of different aerosols, clouds, and seawaters with different scattering phase functions are presented. Some of the results of this simulator are verified by the lidar equation. It is confirmed that the simulator is beneficial to study the principle of spaceborne oceanic lidar and it can help develop a high-precision retrieval algorithm for the inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater.
A Semianalytic Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer Model for Polarized Oceanic Lidar: Experiment-based Comparisons and Multiple Scattering Effects Analyses

Abstract:The polarization characteristic of oceanic lidar returns includes a great deal of seawater information, which plays an important role in subsurface layer detection and seawater optical property retrieval. Along with the microphysical properties of particles, the multiple scattering effect between laser light and particles in seawater is also a source of polarization, which obscures the original depolarization properties of the seawater. However, modeling multiple scattering in polarized oceanic lidar with analytical methods is a complex problem. In this paper, a semianalytic Monte Carlo (MC) polarization radiative transfer model is established to assess the impact of multiple scattering on the backscattering depolarization measurement of oceanic lidar. The MC-simulated lidar returns of both the parallel and perpendicular channels and the depolarization ratios coincide well with the experimental results from three stations in the Yellow Sea of China by shipborne polarized lidar. Further analyses show that the multiple scattering effect enhances the depolarization of seawater; specifically, the depolarization ratio of the lidar return increases with increasing penetration depth, receiver's field of view (FOV), single scattering albedo and beam attenuation coefficient of seawater. This semianalytic polarized MC model is useful for understanding the mechanism of polarized multiple scattering in seawater and for further improving the precision of optical property retrieval using oceanic polarized lidar. Abstract:Multiple scattering is an inevitable effect in spaceborne oceanic lidar because of the large footprint size and the high optical density of seawater. The effective attenuation coefficient klidar in the oceanic lidar equation, which indicates the influence of the multiple scattering effect on the formation of lidar returns, is an important parameter in the retrieval of inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater. In this paper, the relationships between klidar of the spaceborne lidar signal and the IOPs of seawater are investigated by solving the radiative transfer equation with an improved semianalytic Monte Carlo model. Apart from the geometric loss factors, klidar is found to decrease exponentially with the increase of depth in homogeneous waters. klidar is given as an exponential function of depth and IOPs of seawater. The mean percentage errors between klidar calculated by the exponential function and the simulated ones in three typical stratified waters are within 0.5%, proving the effectiveness and applicability of this klidar-IOPs function. The results in this paper can help researchers have a better understanding of the multiple scattering effect of spaceborne lidar and improve the retrieval accuracy of the IOPs and the chlorophyll concentration of case 1 water from spaceborne lidar measurements.
Remote sensing of seawater optical properties and the subsurface phytoplankton layer in coastal waters using an airborne multiwavelength polarimetric ocean lidar

Abstract:The vertical profiles of the seawater optical properties and subsurface phytoplankton layer observed during an airborne lidar flight experiment carried out on 29 January 2021 in the coastal waters near Qionghai city were studied. We employed a hybrid inversion model combining the Klett and perturbation retrieval methods to estimate the seawater optical properties, while the vertical subsurface phytoplankton layer profiles were obtained by an adaptive evaluation. The airborne lidar data preprocessing scheme and inversion of the seawater optical properties were described in detail, and the effects of water environment parameters on the airborne lidar detection performance in coastal waters were discussed. The obtained seawater optical properties and phytoplankton layer profiles exhibit characteristic spatiotemporal distributions. The vertical stratification of seawater optical properties along a flight track from 19.19°N to 19.27°N is more pronounced than that from 19.27°N to 19.31°N. The subsurface phytoplankton layer appears along the flight track at water depths of 5-14 m with a thickness of 2-8.3 m. The high concentrations of chlorophyll, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in coastal waters are the main factors leading to the shallower detection depth for airborne lidar. A 532 nm laser emission wavelength is more suitable than 486 nm for investigating coastal waters. The 532 nm receiving channel with 25 mrad receiving field of view achieves a better detection performance than that with 6 mrad. These results indicate that lidar technology has great potential for the wide-range and long-term monitoring of coastal waters.

Abstract:Quantification of the horizontal patterns of phytoplankton and the distribution of suspended particles across the sea’s surface has been greatly improved by traditional passive oceanic color remote sensing technology. Lidar technology has already been proven to be effective positive remote sensing technology to construct high-resolution bathymetry models. Lidar technology significantly improves our ability to model biogeochemical processes in the upper ocean and provides advanced concepts regarding the vertical distribution of suspended particles and oceanic optical properties. In this paper, we present a novel optical approach to measuring the scattering intensity and characteristics of suspended particles within small angles backwards and distinguish water medium with different attenuation coefficients by a laboratory demonstration of the ocean Scheimpflug lidar system. The approach allows the direct determination of the scattering intensity over a small angle at the backward direction (175.8~178.8°) with an angular resolution of 0.38. Corrections for the effects of refraction at the air-glass-water interface were demonstrated. The data production (initial width and width attenuation rate of the laser beam) of the ocean Scheimpflug lidar system were utilized to distinguish water with different algae concentrations. Application for the measurement of backward scattering intensity and laser beam width were explored in distances up to several meters with spatial resolutions of millimeter precision.

Abstract:Lidar has emerged as an important technology for the high-precision three-dimensional remote sensing of the ocean. While oceanic lidar has been widely deployed on various platforms, its underwater deployment is relatively limited, despite its significance in deep-sea exploration and obstacle avoidance for underwater platforms. Underwater lidar systems must meet stringent requirements for high performance, miniaturization, and high integration. Single-photon lidar, by elevating the detection sensitivity to the single-photon level, enables high-performance detection under the condition of a low-pulse-energy laser and a small-aperture telescope, making it a stronger candidate for underwater lidar applications. However, this imposes demanding requirements for the data acquisition system utilized in single-photon lidar systems. In this work, a self-developed multi-channel acquisition system (MCAS) with a high-resolution and real-time histogram statistics capability was developed. By utilizing field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology, a method that combines coarse counters with multi-phase clock interpolation achieved an impressive resolution of 0.5 ns and enabled a time of flight duration of 1.5 μs. To address counting instability, a dual-counter structure was adopted in the coarse counter, and real-time histogram statistics were achieved in the data acquisition system through a state machine. Furthermore, the non-uniform phase shift of the clock was analyzed, and a correction algorithm based on code density statistics was proposed to mitigate the periodic modulation of the backscattered signal, with the effectiveness of the algorithm demonstrated through experimental results. The robustness and stability of the MCAS were validated through an underwater experiment. Ultimately, the development of this compact acquisition system enables the implementation of underwater single-photon lidar systems, which will play a crucial role in underwater target imaging, obstacle avoidance in underwater platforms, and deep-sea marine environment monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract Spatially resolved in situ monitoring of plankton can provide insights on the impacts of climate change on aquatic ecosystems due to their vital role in the biological carbon pump. However, high-resolution underwater imaging is technically complex and restricted to small close-range volumes with current techniques. Here, we report a novel inelastic scanning confocal light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system for remote underwater volumetric imaging of fluorescent objects. A continuous wave excitation beam is combined with a pinhole in a conjugated detection plane to reject out-of-focus scattering and accomplish near-diffraction limited probe volumes. The combination of bi-directional scanning with remote focusing enables the acquisition of three-dimensional data. We experimentally determine the point spread and axial weighting functions, and demonstrate selective volumetric imaging of obstructed layers through spatial filtering. Finally, we spatially resolve in vivo autofluorescence from sub-millimeter Acocyclops royi copepods to demonstrate the applicability of our novel instrument in non-intrusive morphological and spectroscopic studies of aquatic fauna. The proposed system constitutes a unique tool e.g. for profiling chlorophyll distributions and for quantitative studies of zooplankton with reduced interference from intervening scatterers in the water column that degrade the the performance of conventional imaging systems currently in place.

Abstract:Laser-induced acoustic source has become an intense research interest because of its wideband signal components, increased autonomy, flexibility of subsurface and capability of airborne operation. It has large potential applications in undersea surveillance, port monitoring, defense missions and a variety of commercial activities such as target recognition and ocean-graphic survey. Underwater material recognition based on a remote laser-induced acoustic source is discussed in this paper. A Prony based method with damped sinusoids is used to estimate the laser-induced transient acoustic signals. Underwater acoustic recognition is studied by analyzing a single echo from a kind of material when the laser transient is incident to the material. The experimental results show that the acoustic thicknesses of material estimated by Prony's method are very close to the real ones.

Abstract:A novel multispectral confocal light detection and imaging (LiDAR) system for underwater autofluorescence short‐range sensing is introduced. The instrument combines 3D high‐resolution morphological data with spectroscopic information at the voxel level. The system capabilities for volumetric imaging of microplastics and free‐swimming plankton in a column of water are demonstrated, alongside in situ automated spectral classification using supervised artificial intelligence models. Plankton is essential to maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems since it influences the biological carbon pump globally. However, climate change‐induced alterations to oceanic properties threaten planktonic communities. It is therefore crucial to monitor their abundance to assess the health status of marine ecosystems. In situ optical tools unlock high‐resolution measurements of sub‐millimeter specimens, but state‐of‐the‐art underwater imaging techniques are limited to fixed and small close‐range volumes, requiring the instruments to be vertically dived. Here, a novel scanning multispectral confocal light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system for short‐range volumetric sensing in aquatic media is introduced. The system expands the inelastic confocal principle to multiple wavelength channels, allowing the acquisition of 4D point clouds combining near‐diffraction limited morphological and spectroscopic data that is used to train artificial intelligence (AI) models. Volumetric mapping and classification of microplastics is demonstrated to sort them by color and size. Furthermore, in vivo autofluorescence is resolved from a community of free‐swimming zooplankton and microalgae, and accurate spectral identification of different genera is accomplished. The deployment of this photonic platform alongside AI models overcomes the complex and subjective task of manual plankton identification and enables non‐intrusive sensing from fixed vantage points, thus constituting a unique tool for underwater environmental monitoring.

Abstract:The profiling of marine bio-optical properties by oceanographic lidar is of great significance to the monitoring of the marine environment and the study of the global carbon cycle. In this study, the global detection capability of oceanographic lidar is analyzed with different specifications. To evaluate the detection performance, a simulator on multi-platform is developed. Based on the quasi-single elastic scattering approximation lidar equation and the bio-optical models, the simulator can generate different kinds of outputs, such as lidar signal profiles, signal-to-noise ratio profiles, maximum detectable depth distributions. The optical properties profiles of the global ocean could be derived from the global chlorophyll-a concentration profile data set, which is used as the input to the simulator. The simulation results are compared with the measurements from airborne lidar in the South China Sea, which verifies the reliability of the simulator. The global detection capability of spaceborne lidar with different power aperture products is simulated, and the influence of laser wavelength is analyzed. The results show that, for the simulated spaceborne lidar with typical specifications at 486 nm, there are probabilities ranging from 0.66 to 0.85 that the upper boundary of the thermocline can be detected on a global scale. In the cleanest open ocean, the lidar has a good capability to penetrate the upper boundary of the thermocline, while it cannot penetrate the subsurface chlorophyll maximum layers, in which the global penetration ratio is 0.93 under the simulation specifications at 486 nm. Finally, the influence of repetition frequency is analyzed, and the results show that reducing the pulse repetition frequency at the same average power can effectively reduce the background light of cumulative profiles and improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:Measuring the characteristics of seawater constituent is in great demand for studies of marine ecosystems and biogeochemistry. However, existing techniques based on remote sensing or in situ samplings present various tradeoffs with regard to the diversity, synchronism, temporal-spatial resolution, and depth-resolved capacity of their data products. Here, we demonstrate a novel oceanic triple-field-of-view (FOV) high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) with an iterative retrieval approach. This technique provides, for the first time, comprehensive, continuous, and vertical measurements of seawater absorption coefficient, scattering coefficient, and slope of particle size distribution, which are validated by simulations and field experiments. Furthermore, it depicts valuable application potentials in the accuracy improvement of seawater classification and the continuous estimation of depth-resolved particulate organic carbon export. The triple-FOV HSRL with high performance could greatly increase the knowledge of seawater constituents and promote the understanding of marine ecosystems and biogeochemistry.
