Abstract:The 1994 National Institutes of Health Technology Conference on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) did not support the use of BIA under conditions that alter the normal relationship between the extracellular (ECW) and intracellular water (ICW) compartments. To extend applications of BIA to these populations, we investigated the accuracy and precision of seven previously published BIA models for the measurement of change in body water compartmentalization among individuals infused with lactated Ringer solution or administered a diuretic agent. Results were compared with dilution by using deuterium oxide and bromide combined with short-term changes of body weight. BIA, with use of proximal, tetrapolar electrodes, was measured from 5 to 500 kHz, including 50 kHz. Single-frequency, 50-kHz models did not accurately predict change in total body water, but the 50-kHz parallel model did accurately measure changes in ICW. The only model that accurately predicted change in ECW, ICW, and total body water was the 0/infinity-kHz parallel (Cole-Cole) multifrequency model. Use of the Hanai correction for mixing was less accurate. We conclude that the multifrequency Cole-Cole model is superior under conditions in which body water compartmentalization is altered from the normal state.

Abstract:Body composition assessments are essential for understanding health and nutritional status. Traditional methods like deuterium oxide dilution, while accurate, are impractical due to cost and complexity. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) has emerged as a preferred clinical and research technique. BIA measures total body water and, by extension, fat mass and fat-free mass, based on constant hydration assumptions. Wearable BIA technology provides real-time body composition data, enhancing at-home monitoring. Although these devices show promise in measuring parameters like body fat percentage and skeletal muscle mass, accuracy discrepancies compared to methods like dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and the 4-compartment model require further validation. Addressing user adherence and environmental limitations is essential for reliable results. This narrative review examines the current landscape of wearable BIA technology. Despite challenges, wearable BIA devices offer significant benefits, emphasizing ongoing innovation and validation.
What Does Multimodality Mean for English ? Creative Tensions in Teaching New Texts and New Literacies

Abstract:The argument for a pedagogy which embraces visual and multimodal representation is well established in academic circles (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 1996; New London Group, 1996; Cope & Kalantzis, 2000) and a plethora of literacies congregate around the ever-expanding subject English as the prime site for innovation and development. This paper will focus on one exploratory case study from the Economic and Social Research Council InterActive Education Project to examine how working with multimodal texts creates tensions for English teachers as well as creative opportunities for pupils. Questions around what might be an appropriate pedagogy and metalanguage for the new literacies involved were tested against the models put forward by the New London Group. The process has shown that the development of a viable metalanguage for teaching and assessing multimodal texts is highly problematic and is in need of further empirical study. This cultural work is constrained by the current assessment requirements for English in England and needs to be considered against discussions of what definition of English and literacy we need in the 21st century.

Abstract:Summary Obesity, which is characterized by excessive body fat, increases the risk of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. Sarcopenia, a decline in muscle mass, is also associated with many chronic disorders and is therefore a major concern in aging populations. Body composition analysis is important in the evaluation of obesity and sarcopenia because it provides information about the distribution of body fat and muscle mass. It is also useful for monitoring nutritional status, disease severity, and the effectiveness of interventions, such as exercise, diet, and drugs, and thus helps assess overall health and longevity. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry are commonly used for this purpose. However, they have limitations, such as high cost, long measurement time, and radiation exposure. Instead, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which was introduced several decades ago and has undergone significant technological advancements, can be used. It is easily accessible, affordable, and importantly, poses no radiation risk, making it suitable for use in hospitals, fitness centers, and even at home. Herein, we review the recent technological developments and clinical applications of BIA to provide an updated understanding of BIA technology and its strengths and limitations.

Abstract:The present systematic review aimed to compare the accuracy of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) and Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA) vs. reference methods for the assessment of body composition in athletes. Studies were identified based on a systematic search of internationally electronic databases (PubMed and Scopus) and hand searching of the reference lists of the included studies. In total, 42 studies published between 1988 and 2021 were included. The methodological quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-sectional Studies as recommended by the National Institute of Health. Twenty-three studies had an overall good rating in terms of quality, while 13 were rated as fair and 6 as poor, resulting in a low to moderate risk of bias. Fat mass was inconsistently determined using BIA vs. the reference methods, regardless of the BIA-technology. When using the foot to hand technology with predictive equations for athletes, a good agreement between BIA and the reference methods was observed for fat-free mass, total body, intra and extra cellular water. However, an underestimation in fat-free mass and body fluids was found when using generalized predictive equations. Classic and Specific BIVA represented a valid approach for assessing body fluids (Classic BIVA) and percentage of fat mass (Specific BIVA). The present systematic review suggests that BIA and BIVA can be used for assessing body composition in athletes, provided that foot-to-hand technology, predictive equations, and BIVA references for athletes are used.

Abstract:The measurement of body composition (BC) represents a valuable tool to assess nutritional status in health and disease. The most used methods to evaluate BC in the clinical practice are based on bicompartment models and measure, directly or indirectly, fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM). Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (nowadays considered as the reference technique in clinical practice) are extensively used in epidemiological (mainly BIA) and clinical (mainly DXA) settings to evaluate BC. DXA is primarily used for the measurements of bone mineral content (BMC) and density to assess bone health and diagnose osteoporosis in defined anatomical regions (femur and spine). However, total body DXA scans are used to derive a three-compartment BC model, including BMC, FM, and FFM. Both these methods feature some limitations: the accuracy of BIA measurements is reduced when specific predictive equations and standardized measurement protocols are not utilized whereas the limitations of DXA are the safety of repeated measurements (no more than two body scans per year are currently advised), cost, and technical expertise. This review aims to provide useful insights mostly into the use of BC methods in prevention and clinical practice (ambulatory or bedridden patients). We believe that it will stimulate a discussion on the topic and reinvigorate the crucial role of BC evaluation in diagnostic and clinical investigation protocols.

Abstract:Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has proven to be particularly useful due to its inexpensive and rapid assessment of total body water and body density. However, recent fluid intake may confound BIA results since equilibration of fluid between intra- and extracellular spaces may take several hours and furthermore, ingested fluids may not be fully absorbed. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of different fluid compositions on the BIA. A total of eighteen healthy individuals (10 females, mean ± SD age of 23.1 ± 1.8 years) performed a baseline measurement of body composition before they consumed isotonic 0.9% sodium-chloride (ISO), 5% glucose (GLU) or Ringer (RIN) solutions. During the visit of the control arm (CON), no fluid was consumed. Further impedance analyses were conducted every 10 min after the fluid consumption for 120 min. We found statistically significant interactions between the effects of solution ingestion and time for intra- (ICW, p < 0.01) and extracellular water (ECW, p < 0.0001), skeletal muscle mass (SMM, p < 0.001) and body fat mass (FM, p < 0.01), respectively. Simple main effects analysis showed that time had a statistically significant effect on changes in ICW (p < 0.01), ECW (p < 0.01), SMM (p < 0.01) and FM (p < 0.01), while fluid intake did not have a significant effect. Our results highlight the importance of a standardized pre-measurement nutrition, with particular attention to hydration status when using a BIA for the evaluation of body composition.

Abstract:Background & aims: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for body composition estimation is increasingly used in clinical and field settings to guide nutrition and training programs. Due to variations among BIA devices and the proprietary prediction equations used, studies have recommended the use of raw measures of resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) within population-specific equations to predict body composition. Objective: We compared raw measures from three BIA devices to assess inter-device variation and the impact of differences on body composition estimations. Methods: Raw R, Xc, impedance (Z) parameters were measured on a calibrated phantom and athletes using tetrapolar supine (BIASUP4), octapolar supine (BIASUP8), and octapolar standing (BIASTA8) devices. Measures of R and Xc were compared across devices and graphed using BIA vector analysis (BIVA) and raw parameters were entered into recommended athlete-specific equations for predicting fat-free mass (FFM) and appendicular lean soft tissue (ALST). Whole-body FFM and regional ALST were compared across devices and to a criterion five-compartment (5C) model and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry for ALST. Results: Data from 73 (23.2 ± 4.8 y) athletes were included in the analyses. Technical differences were observed between Z (range 12.2-50.1Ω) measures on the calibrated phantom. Differences in whole-body impedance were apparent due to posture (technological) and electrode placement (biological) factors. This resulted in raw measures for all three devices showing greater dehydration on BIVA compared to published norms for athletes using a separate BIA device. Compared to the 5C FFM, significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed on all three equations for BIASUP8 and BIASTA8, with constant error (CE) from -2.7 to -4.6 kg; no difference was observed for BIASUP4 or when device-specific algorithms were used. Published equations resulted in differences as large as 8.8 kg FFM among BIA devices. For ALST, even after a correction in the error of the published empirical equation, all three devices showed significant (p < 0.01) CE from -1.6 to -2.9 kg. Conclusions: Raw bioimpedance measurements differ among devices due to technical, technological, and biological factors, limiting interchangeability of data across BIA systems. Professionals should be aware of these factors when purchasing systems, comparing data to published reference ranges, or when applying published empirical body composition prediction equations.
Assessment of bioimpedance spectroscopy devices: a comparative study and error analysis of gold-plated copper electrodes

Abstract:Objective: Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool to derive fluid volume compartments from frequency dependent voltage drops in alternating currents by extrapolating to the extracellular resistance (R0) and intracellular resistance (Ri). Here we tested whether a novel BIS device with reusable and adhesive single-use electrodes produces results which are (in various body positions) equivalent to an established system employing only single-use adhesive electrodes. Approach: Two BIS devices ("Cella" and the "Body Composition Monitor" [BCM]) were compared using four dedicated resistance testboxes and by measuring 40 healthy volunteers. In-vivo comparisons included supine wrist-to-ankle (WA) reference measurements and wrist-to-wrist (WW) measurements with pre-gelled silver/silver-chloride (Ag/AgCl) electrodes and WW measurements with reusable gold-plated copper electrodes. Main Results: Coefficient of variation were < 1 % for all testbox measurements with both BIS devices. Accuracy was within ±1 % of true resistance variability, a threshold which was only exceeded by the Cella device for all resistances in a testbox designed with a low R0/Ri ratio. In-vivo, WA-BIS differed significantly between BIS devices (p < 0.001). Reusable WW electrodes exhibited larger resistances than WW-BIS with Ag/AgCl electrodes (R0: 738.36 and 628.69 Ω; Ri: 1508.18 and 1390 Ω) and the relative error varied from 7.6 to 31.1 % (R0) and -15.6 to 37.3 % (Ri). Significance: Both BIS devices produced equivalent resistances measurements but different estimates of body composition both in-vitro and in WA setups in-vivo, suggesting that the devices should not be used interchangeably. Employing WW reusable electrodes as opposed to WA and WW measurement setups with pre-gelled Ag/AgCl electrodes seems to be associated with measurement variations that are too large for safe clinical use. We recommend further investigations of measurement errors originating from electrode material and current path.

Abstract:Background: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a technique widely used for estimating body composition and health-related parameters. The technology is relatively simple, quick, and non-invasive, and is currently used globally in diverse settings, including private clinicians' offices, sports and health clubs, and hospitals, and across a spectrum of age, body weight, and disease states. BIA parameters can be used to estimate body composition (fat, fat-free mass, total-body water and its compartments). Moreover, raw measurements including resistance, reactance, phase angle, and impedance vector length can also be used to track health-related markers, including hydration and malnutrition, and disease-prognostic, athletic and general health status. Body composition shows profound variability in association with age, sex, race and ethnicity, geographic ancestry, lifestyle, and health status. To advance understanding of this variability, we propose to develop a large and diverse multi-country dataset of BIA raw measures and derived body components. The aim of this paper is to describe the 'BIA International Database' project and encourage researchers to join the consortium. Methods: The Exercise and Health Laboratory of the Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Lisbon has agreed to host the database using an online portal. At present, the database contains 277,922 measures from individuals ranging from 11 months to 102 years, along with additional data on these participants. Conclusion: The BIA International Database represents a key resource for research on body composition.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To develop a new bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) model for analyzing body composition by using isotope dilution, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as the reference methods in young healthy Chinese populations.METHODS:Thirty healthy participants were enrolled. Their body composition was analyzed using BIA and 3 reference methods. We established a model that uniformed data from 3 references methods (isotope, MRI, and DEXA) into 1 formula. This model was further validated with 209 participants.RESULTS:The following BIA body composition adjustment model was developed: [Formula: see text], where X represents the impedance index; when K = 1, 2, and 3, Y represents total body water, fat mass, and bone mass, respectively. The prediction accuracy of this formula was 93.3%. By incorporating the data matrix, the protein mass was calculated using BIA: [Formula: see text]. In the verification part of this study, the lean body mass measured using DEXA and BIA was 43.02 ± 8.34 kg and 45.85 ± 8.81 kg, respectively. Analysis indicated that the model fit was extremely favorable ( R2 = .9997, P < .001).CONCLUSIONS:The accuracy of BIA measurement on body composition and protein mass is significantly improved by our work.

Abstract:Body composition is acknowledged as a determinant of athletic health and performance. Its assessment is crucial in evaluating the efficiency of a diet or aspects related to the nutritional status of the athlete. Despite the methods traditionally used to assess body composition, bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) and bioelectric impedance vector analysis (BIVA) have recently gained attention in sports, as well as in a research context. Only until recently have specific regression equations and reference tolerance ellipses for athletes become available, while specific recommendations for measurement procedures still remain scarce. Therefore, the present narrative review summarizes the current literature regarding body composition analysis, with a special focus on BIA and BIVA. The use of specific technologies and sampling frequencies is described, and recommendations for the assessment of body composition in athletes are provided. Additionally, the estimation of body composition parameters (i.e., quantitative analysis) and the interpretation of the raw bioelectrical data (i.e., qualitative analysis) are examined, highlighting the innovations now available in athletes. Lastly, it should be noted that, up until 2020, the use of BIA and BIVA in athletes failed to provide accurate results due to unspecific equations and references; however, new perspectives are now unfolding for researchers and practitioners. In light of this, BIA and especially BIVA can be utilized to monitor the nutritional status and the seasonal changes in body composition in athletes, as well as provide accurate within- and between-athlete comparisons.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a promising technique to evaluate dry weight. We compared the dry weight calculated by the three BIA equations Carlo Basile (CB) , Yanna Dou (YD) and the body composition spectroscopy (BCS) with clinical evaluation in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients.METHODS:The dry weight of enrolled MHD patients (DWClin) was evaluated under strict clinical surveillance. The whole-body resistances at 50 kHz, intra- and extracellular resistances were measured to calculate the dry weight (DWCB, DWYD and DWBCS) using each of the three equations.RESULTS:Neither DWCB nor DWBCS were statistically different compared to DWClin (DWCB 63.2 ± 17.2 vs. 63.1 ± 16.1 kg; DWBCS 62.8 ± 16.8 vs. 63.1 ± 16.1 kg, p > 0.05). DWYD was significantly lower than DWClin (DWYD 62.0 ± 16.1 vs. 63.1 ± 16.1 kg, p < 0.05). The bias between DWCB and DWClin was the smallest among these three methods (ΔDWCB -0.1 ± 1.4 kg; ΔDWYD 1.1 ± 2.9 kg; ΔDWBCS 0.3 ± 1.8 kg).CONCLUSION:The CB equations have better consistency with clinical dry weight in MHD patients.

This due primarily to technical difficulties of measurement in these groups. Although improvements in data modelling have, in part, mitigated this issue, the problem continues to yield unacceptably high rates of poor quality data. This study investigated an alternative data modelling procedure obviating issues associated with BIS measurements in babies and infants.Approach.BIS data are conventionally analysed according to the Cole model describing the impedance response of body tissues to an appliedACcurrent. This approach is susceptible to errors due to capacitive leakage errors of measurement at high frequency. The alternative is to model BIS data based on the resistance-frequency spectrum rather than the reactance-resistance Cole model thereby avoiding capacitive error impacts upon reactance measurements.Main results.The resistance-frequency approach allowed analysis of 100% of data files obtained from BIS measurements in 72 babies compared to 87% successful analyses with the Cole model. Resistance-frequency modelling error (percentage standard error of the estimate) was half that of the Cole method. Estimated resistances at zero and infinite frequency were used to predict body composition. Resistance-based prediction of fat-free mass (FFM) exhibited a 30% improvement in the two-standard deviation limits of agreement with reference FFM measured by air displacement plethysmography when compared to Cole model-based predictions.Significance.This study has demonstrated improvement in the analysis of BIS data based on the resistance frequency response rather than conventional Cole modelling. This approach is recommended for use where BIS data are compromised by high frequency capacitive leakage errors such as those obtained in babies and infants.
Evaluating of altered hydration status on effectiveness of body composition analysis using bioelectric impedance analysis

Abstract:Body composition analysis may provide valuable information about the assessment of balance between fluid, fat, and fat-free mass. The present study assessed whether the regular increase in water consumption has any significant effects on measurements of body composition using BIA. A total of 140 subjects participated in this study. Body composition analyses of the subjects were performed for five times using foot to foot BIA; first at baseline and four times, after 15 minutes of each 500 mL water intakes. There was overestimation in body fat mass compared to the baseline and increased significantly after water intakes in males (2.08% in 500 mL, 3.80% in 1000 mL, 5.88% in 1500 mL, and 7.92% in 2000 mL, p < 0.05) and in females (3.4% in 500 mL, 5.7% in 1000 mL, 7.8% in 1500 mL, and 9.4% in 2000 mL, p < 0.05). In contrast, there was markedly underestimation of total body water and fat-free mass in males (35% and 50%) and females (17% and 22%), respectively, at the end of the study. Thus, overestimation of body fat mass and lower estimation of total body water and fat-free mass with closely to the amount of water retention using BIA application should be considered in health-related clinical practice.

Abstract:Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a widely used method for estimating body composition, and its accuracy may be influenced by various factors, including bladder filling. This study aims to investigate the impact of bladder filling on the accuracy of BIA measurements. An experimental crossover study was conducted with sedentary young adults. The influence of bladder filling on total body water (TBW), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), and basal metabolic rate (BMR) was assessed. Participant in underwear followed an overnight fast. They were instructed to abstain from vigorous physical activity and alcohol for at least 24 h prior to the session. The results obtained from single-frequency and multi-frequency BIA devices were compared. The findings suggest that bladder filling does not affect measured impedance; however, changes in weight following bladder voiding influenced derived BIA results. Specifically, TBW, FM, and BMR values significantly reduced after voiding (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the study found poor agreement between single-frequency and multi-frequency BIA devices, indicating that they are not interchangeable. Bladder filling does affect BIA measurements, not clinically meaningful. Further research is needed to explore the implications of these findings for clinical practice and research protocols.

Comparison of Bioimpedance Methods for Estimating Total Body Water and Intracellular Water Changes During Hemodialysis

Abstract:Background. The accurate assessment of body fluid volume is important in many clinical situations. Hannan et al. proposed a single-frequency bioimpedance equation (HE) to calculate extracellular water (ECW) and total body water (TBW). There are two equations based on the bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) method for the evaluation of body fluid volume: Xitron equations (XE) and body composition spectroscopy equations (BCSE). The aim of the study was to compare the accuracy of these three equations in body fluid volume point estimation in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients.Methods. The BIS method was performed in MHD patients before and after a hemodialysis (HD) session. TBW, ECW and intracellular water (ICW) were calculated by XE, BCSE and HE, respectively. Hydration status (HS) was calculated using inputs of XE, BCSE and HE. ICW before dialysis was compared to ICW after dialysis. The change of TBW and HS using different equations was compared to actual ultrafiltration volume (AUV) that was calculated as weight difference of pre- to postdialysis.Results. Fifty MHD patients (27 females) were included in the study. Significant changes in ICW were observed using the XE and HE method with ultrafiltration (XE: 15.51 +/- 5.07 versus 16.17 +/- 5.34 L, P < 0.01; HE: 17.40 +/- 5.13 versus 16.55 +/- 4.71 L, P < 0.01). However, no significant ICW change was observed using BCSE (17.47 +/- 4.35 versus 17.54 +/- 4.36 L, P > 0.05). (sic)TBW_XE and (sic)TBW_HE were significantly different from AUV (XE 1.76 +/- 0.89 versus 2.46 +/- 0.89 L, P < 0.01; HE 4.16 +/- 1.36 versus 2.46 +/- 0.89 L, P < 0.01); however, (sic)TBW_BCSE was much closer to AUV (2.27 +/- 0.90 versus 2.46 +/- 0.89 L, P = 0.129). The change of HS using inputs of BCSE was also closer to AUV (2.41 +/- 0.86 versus 2.46 +/- 0.89 L, P = 1.0).Conclusion. Our study indicated that BCSE provided a better point estimation of ICW and TBW.
