Abstract:Introduction Breast cancer is currently the first cancer diagnosed among women. The impact of its local treatments such as surgery and radiation and its systemic treatments such as chemotherapy, hormone-suppressant therapies and targeted therapies on women's bodies anatomically and physiologically and on their body image and body esteem are the major factors altering their sexual health and the quality of their spousal relationships. Objective We aim to evaluate the qualitative impact of breast cancer on its survivors' body-image. Methods We ran a prospective qualitative study using semi-structured interviews until saturation of findings. The patients included were women diagnosed, treated for breast cancer, and followed up in our institution. All participants were sexually active and no older than 55. The study enrolled 20 participants over a 6-month period (February 2022-July 2022). Results All participants had a history of breast surgery either lumpectomy or mastectomy (70%) with (one case) or without reconstructive surgery. All patients reported a history of radiation and chemotherapy. 60% had received hormone therapy with medically induced menopause. The majority of participants explained how their bodies had changed not only physically and anatomically on the outside but also on the inside especially in relation to the adverse effects of chemotherapy and hormone therapy. They also reported body emotional changes. This required an adaptation to their new body for them and their partners and entourage. The main themes emerging from their discourse were: physical and emotional adaptation to breast cancer per se and its local and systematic treatments, fear of others judgment and comments on their physical changes and loss or gain of self-esteem. Breast reconstruction was also an important theme it the participants verbatim. Conclusions The words and themes that characterized the participants' speeches highlighted the impact of cancer diagnosis and oncological therapies on breast cancer survivors. Being part of a psychological intervention focused on self-compassion and body acceptance helps breast cancer survivors develop a better perception and acceptance of their new bodies. Disclosure No.

Body image and sexual problems in young women with breast cancer

Abstract:PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of body image and sexual problems in the first months after treatment among women diagnosed with breast cancer at age 50 or younger.BACKGROUND: Breast cancer treatment may have severe effects on the bodies of younger women. Surgical treatment may be disfiguring, chemotherapy may cause abrupt menopause, and hormone replacement is not recommended.METHODS: A multi-ethnic population-based sample of 549 women aged 22-50 who were married or in a stable unmarried relationship were interviewed within seven months of diagnosis with in situ, local, or regional breast cancer.RESULTS: Body image and sexual problems were experienced by a substantial proportion of women in the early months after diagnosis. Half of the 546 women experienced two or more body image problems some of the time (33%), or at least one problem much of the time (17%). Among sexually active women, greater body image problems were associated with mastectomy and possible reconstruction, hair loss from chemotherapy, concern with weight gain or loss, poorer mental health, lower self-esteem, and partner's difficulty understanding one's feelings. Among the 360 sexually active women, half (52%) reported having a little problem in two or more areas of sexual functioning (24%), or a definite or serious problem in at least one area (28%). Greater sexual problems were associated with vaginal dryness, poorer mental health, being married, partner's difficulty understanding one's feelings, and more body image problems, and there were significant ethnic differences in reported severity.CONCLUSIONS: Difficulties related to sexuality and sexual functioning were common and occurred soon after surgical and adjuvant treatment. Addressing these problems is essential to improve the quality of life of young women with breast cancer.

Abstract:Purpose: To explore treatment-related, socio-economic, and psychological factors influencing body image and return to work. Materials and methods: 137 patients participated in the study. A questionnaire was completed before surgery and at 1-year follow-up, where patients were also interviewed in person with questions modified from the Body Image Scale and the sexual adjustment scale as well as questions about their work status. Results: There was a significant decline in body image score from baseline to 1-year follow-up related to younger age, more extensive surgery and post-surgery treatments. Treatment with adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with a lower rating on ability to work in relation to mental requirements and later return to work. Higher anxiety scores at baseline were associated with both a decline in body image and a delay in return to work. Conclusion: Breast cancer surgery can affect body image and especially adjuvant chemotherapy seems to affect work ability. However, personal characteristics are also involved and thus should be considered when planning for treatment of breast cancer.

Abstract:Women with breast cancer show dissatisfaction with their appearance, a perception of loss of femininity and bodily integrity, and dissatisfaction with the outcome of the surgery. Body Appreciation (BA) is defined as positive attitudes toward one's body, beyond satisfaction and dissatisfaction with one's appearance. Although studies about the protective role of BA have increased, to the best of our knowledge, there are no published studies on the association between BA, body dissatisfaction, and distress in participants with breast cancer. The aims of this study are: (a) To analyze whether BA is a moderator of satisfaction with the body from before breast surgery to the one-year follow-up; and (b) to analyze whether BA is a moderator of distress from before breast surgery to the one-year follow-up. The sample consisted of 115 women diagnosed with breast cancer. Several hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. The results indicated that BA moderated the association between the appearance evaluation before the surgery and the appearance evaluation 12 months after the surgery. Although BA was a significative predictor of distress, it was not a moderator of distress from the moment before breast surgery to the one-year follow-up. This study highlights the importance of evaluating the construct of BA in participants with breast cancer using longitudinal designs and developing psychological interventions that focus on increasing BA.

Abstract:Purpose: To determine the relationship among body image, illness uncertainty, and symptom clusters in surgically treated breast cancer survivors. Methods: A correlational, descriptive study was conducted in a convenience sample of 60 women surgically treated breast cancer survivors recruited in a private hospital and a survivor center. A questionnaire of sociodemographic characteristics, MUIS-C Scale, and QLQ-C30 and Module BR-23 were used. Variable characteristics and associations were analyzed with descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient, and exploratory factor analysis using unweighted least squares and Promax rotation was used for symptom clustering. Results: A three-factor structure was found: an anxiety symptom cluster, a breast symptom cluster, and an arm symptoms, depression, and fatigue symptom cluster, explaining 46,47% of the variance. Significant correlations were found among body image and illness uncertainty (r = -0,390, p < 0,01), body image and the anxiety symptom cluster (r = 0,613, p < 0,01), illness uncertainty and the anxiety symptom cluster (r = -0,421, p < 0,01), the breast symptom cluster (r = -0,425, p < 0,01), and the arm symptoms - depression - fatigue symptom cluster (r = -0,443, p < 0,01). Conclusion: The relationships among all variables were statistically significant. Nurses providing care to BC survivors need to address the multidimensionality of the symptom experience and its correlates to better assist their patients. Further research is needed to elucidate the biopsychosocial underpinnings of those relationships.

Abstract:In the Body image satisfaction in different cancer entities in women section, the results regarding SA are discussed incorrectly. The correct text in the section is: Women with breast and gynecological cancer and visceral cancer differed regarding their SA in that women with visceral cancers reported diminished levels of self-acceptance scores compared to women with breast and gynecological cancer. Since there are hardly any studies that compared women with different kinds of cancer regarding body image facets, it is particularly difficult to classify the results of the present study in relation to existing research. Nonetheless, it is well known that women with breast cancer often suffer from body image difficulties that are closely related to the cancer treatment and its side effects [20, 44, 73]. As breast and gynecological cancers directly affect primary or secondary sexual characteristics and the SIS-D's self-acceptance scale includes one's feeling of sexual desirability, differences to the group of patients whose cancer has less evident impact on their sexuality would be comprehensible especially when considering that breast cancer treatment often includes partial or complete mastectomy. In addition, women may experience impairments in their femininity due to cancers affecting the breast or reproductive organs, which also result in reduced SA. In addition, body image is determined not only by physical appearance but also by functioning. Therefore, assuming that women with breast and gynecologic cancer represent the group most affected by body image altered to the negative, there are at least two possible explanations for the results found in the present sample. One possible explanation arises from the composition of the sample used, in which a large proportion of breast cancer patients came from studies that investigated partnership. Since the presence of a relationship generally has a positive effect on the quality of life of cancer patients [29], this could have resulted in a bias towards more positive SA values. Furthermore, there might be a disproportionate amount of women with especially body image challenging kinds of cancer in the group with visceral cancers as e.g. differences between colorectal cancer patients with and without a stoma have been reported in the past [15]. Of course, all this is speculative and therefore further research regarding SA differences in women with different kinds of cancer are clearly needed.

Preoperative Body Image Factors Are Associated with Complications after Breast Reconstruction

Abstract:Background: Psychological factors are broadly understood to contribute to overall health, but their contribution to wound healing is less well defined. Limited data exist on the association of preoperative psychological factors such as body image and postoperative complications. The present study analyzed the association between preoperative body image factors and postoperative complications following breast reconstruction. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of 302 breast cancer patients undergoing breast reconstruction from 2011 to 2015. All patients completed the BREAST-Q; demographics, surgical details, and postoperative complications were recorded. The association of body image factors by means of the BREAST-Q and postoperative complications was analyzed. Results: On univariate analysis, patients who reported lower preoperative satisfaction with how they appeared in the mirror unclothed, or felt less self-confident or attractive, were significantly more likely to develop an infection postoperatively. Preoperative satisfaction scores were not associated with complications when analyzed in a multivariate fashion. On binomial logistic regression analysis, after controlling for age, body mass index, reconstruction technique, and use of radiotherapy, patients who reported less preoperative satisfaction with how comfortably bras fit or how they appeared in a mirror unclothed were at an increased risk for delayed wound healing. Conclusions: Patients with lower preoperative body satisfaction were found to have an increased incidence of infections and delayed wound healing. Although postoperative outcomes are multifactorial, the data suggest that baseline psychological factors such as body image may play a role in postoperative outcomes. Broader use of prehabilitative therapies, targeted at psychosocial factors, may warrant further investigation to optimize postoperative outcomes. Clinical question/level of evidence: Risk, III.

Abstract:PurposeThe objectives were to assess changes in sexual QOL and body image distress over time and to examine longitudinal associations between sexual QOL and body image variables with psychosocial outcomes in a sample of colorectal cancer patients.MethodsParticipants (N = 141) completed a mail-based survey assessing sexual QOL [sexual distress (ISS), treatment impact on sexual function (SFQ), sexual function (FSFI; IIEF)], body image distress (BIS), and psychosocial outcomes [relationship quality (DAS-4), depressive symptoms (CESD-SF), and health-related QOL (HRQOL; FACT-C)]; 88 patients completed 6-month follow-up surveys (62%). Gender and cancer subgroups (male vs. female; rectal vs. colon cancer) were compared and longitudinal models examined associations between sexual QOL and body image variables with psychosocial outcomes over time and by subgroup.ResultsImpairments in sexual QOL and body image distress were common. Women and patients with rectal cancer reported worse body image distress compared to men (p = .005) and those with colon cancer (p = .03), respectively; compared to patients with colon cancer, those with rectal cancer reported worse treatment impact (p < .001) and marginally worse sexual function and HRQOL (p’s = .05). At 6-month follow-up, body image distress decreased (p = .02), while sexual QOL was stable (e.g., 58% classified as dysfunctional at both time points, p = .13). For most sexual and body image predictors, worse impairment was associated with worse psychosocial outcomes over time. Several significant gender and cancer subgroup effects were found.ConclusionsSexual QOL and body image are compromised after colorectal cancer and tend to remain impaired if unaddressed. Sexual concerns should be addressed early to limit broader-reaching psychosocial effects.

Abstract:Introduction A breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment can have profound impacts on patients' body image and sexual health. Sexual health and well-being are an unmet concern for many and declines in sexual function have been associated with higher distress and anxiety. Objective Our study aims to evaluate how distress at diagnosis is related to sexual well-being and referral to ancillary resources during breast cancer treatment at a comprehensive cancer center. Methods All patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer were offered a distress screening tool which measures distress in the emotional (I.e. worry, nervousness), physical (I.e. nausea, sexual intimacy, fatigue), social (I.e. relating with others), and practical domains (I.e. bills, housing, transportation). High distress in a domain was defined as a score greater than 5. Patients were then invited to complete the Breast-Q module, a validated patient reported outcome (PRO) scale that quantifies outcomes related to sexual well-being (SW). Participants who had at least one distress measure at baseline and at least one PRO at either baseline or 6-months post-operatively were eligible for inclusion. Chart review was conducted for referral to and utilization of ancillary services including sexual health consultation. Multivariable linear mixed models were used to compare high and low distress with an interaction between distress and time. Results 227 patients were included in the study population. The median baseline SW score was 55.4 (standard deviation = 22.9). High practical distress was found in 18.4% of patients, however, those with high practical distress at baseline were more likely to have greater decline in their SW scores between the pre-operative and 6-month post-operative time points (p = 0.03) (Figure 1). After adjusting for age, stage, and treatment received, this relationship remained significant. Of the available ancillary resources, social work and care management services were the most common referrals with 135 patients seen. Only 4 patients attended a sexual health consultation based on clinician discretion. Change in pre-operative and 6-month post operative SW was not related to emotional, physical, or social distress. Conclusions Sexual well-being trajectories are related to practical distress at diagnosis. This suggests that patients who are already struggling with the logistics of a new breast cancer diagnosis may suffer the most when it comes to their sexual health. Most patients here received some ancillary support however it is clear something is still missing given the observed declines in sexual well-being. Further study is necessary to understand the drivers of this relationship and how these patients can receive early intervention to prevent worsening of their sexual well-being during breast cancer treatment. Abstract:Abstract Purpose Body image (BI) is an important issue for cancer patients, as patients with BI concerns are susceptible to depression, anxiety, difficulty coping, and poor quality of life (QoL). While this concern has been documented in patients with other malignancies, no data exists of this QoL issue in patients with primary brain tumors (PBT). Methods A cross-sectional survey of 100 PBT patients was conducted on an IRB approved prospective protocol using structured questionnaires. Participants completed the body image scale (BIS), Appearance Scheme Inventory Revised (ASI-R), MD Anderson Symptom Inventory Brain Tumor (MDASI-BT), and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Depression, Anxiety, and Psychosocial Impact Positive measures. Results The prevalence of clinically significant body image dissatisfaction (BIS ≥ 10) was 28% (95% CI 19–37%), median BIS score was 5 (range 0–27). The median ASI-R composite score was 2.9 (range 1.5–4.7). BIS was significantly correlated with the ASI-R ( r = 0.53, 95% CI 0.37 to 0.65). The mean PROMIS Depression score was 48.4 (SD = 8.9), PROMIS Anxiety score was 49.4 (SD = 9.9), and PROMIS Psychosocial Illness Impact Positive score was 48.9 (SD = 9.7). BIS was significantly correlated with age, and trended with BMI and sex. The PROMIS Psychosocial Illness Impact Positive and PROMIS Anxiety scores were the most strongly related to BIS. Conclusions This study, the first to explore altered body image in PBT patients, revealed clinically significant body image dissatisfaction in nearly 1/3 of patients, similar to other malignancies. These findings underscore the potential contribution of disease and treatment-related body image concerns on psychosocial wellbeing in patients with PBT.

Comparative pharmacokinetics of chlorphenesin carbamate and methocarbamol in man.

Abstract:Serum drug levels following oral administration of large single doses of chlorphenesin carbamate and methocarbamol were fitted to a one-compartment open model. The appearance of each drug was described by a short lag time followed by a rapid first-order absorption and attainment of maximum levels. No statistically significant differences were found between estimates of mean lag times (t0, 0.5 and 0.2 hr.), half-lives for absorption (t1/2, 0.4 and 0.6 hr), and times for attainment of maximum serum concentrations (tm, 1.9 and 1.4 hr.) for chlorphenesin carbamate and methocarbamol, respectively. Chlorphenesin carbamate was distributed throughout a significantly larger relative volume (1.27 versus 0.48 1./kg.) and yielded a correspondingly smaller maximum serum concentration (15.3 versus 29.8 mcg./ml., 2-g. dose). The mean biological half-life for chlorphenesin carbamate, 3.14 hr., was significantly greater than the value of 1.20 hr. obtained for methocarbamol.
Breast Cancer Surgery: A Qualitative Exploration of Concerns Over Time

Abstract:Introduction: As outcomes for breast cancer patients improve, addressing the side effects and distress of treatment can optimize survivorship. Although distress in breast cancer is well known in literature, there is a lack of information on how these concerns change through the phases of the cancer care continuum. Therefore, this study investigates the longitudinal trajectory of worry in patients with nonmetastatic breast cancer. Methods: Female patients with newly diagnosed stage I-III breast cancer comprised a mixed-methods, longitudinal study at a cancer center from June 2019 to June 2023. Patients completed an open-ended survey regarding their top three concerns. Responses were obtained before surgery and two weeks, three, six, nine months, and one year postoperatively. Responses were qualitatively coded and analyzed to determine themes of cancer-related distress. Results: Participants (n = 262) were aged an average 57.53 y (±12.54), 65.8% had stage I disease at diagnosis, and 91.1% were White. Responses revealed that patients' top three sources of concerns varied by treatment phase. Overall, patients were worried about their cancer diagnosis and the risk of recurrence. Preoperatively, patients were worried about treatment timeline, while postoperative concerns transitioned to physical appearance and surgical side effects. Conclusions: Breast cancer patients consistently reported worries about cancer diagnosis, recurrence, and metastasis as well as the side effects and fear of treatments. However, patient worry appeared to be intrinsically linked with their treatment phase. Therefore, support and interventions should be catered to reflect the changing patterns of patients' sources of distress to optimize breast cancer patients' quality of life.
Body image, physical activity and psychological health in older female cancer survivors

Abstract:Objectives: To determine the association of physical activity and body image with psychological health outcomes and whether body image mediates the association of physical activity with psychological health among older female cancer survivors. Materials and methods: Data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Life and Longevity after Cancer (LILAC) Study were used. Surveys assessed body image (appearance, attractiveness, scars), moderate-strenuous physical activity (min/week), and psychological health (depression, anxiety, distress). A mediation analysis was conducted to estimate the percentage of the total effect of physical activity on psychological health mediated by body image concerns. Results: Among 4567 female cancer survivors aged 66-98 years, the average time since cancer diagnosis was 9.2 years. Approximately 50% reported no moderate-strenuous physical activity; 15% reported depressive symptoms, 6% reported anxiety, and 5% reported psychological distress; 3% had concerns with appearance, 20% had concerns with attractiveness, and 21% had concerns with scars. When unadjusted for body image concerns, every 30 min/week increase in physical activity was associated with lower risk of depressive symptoms (RR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.90-0.96), anxiety (RR = 0.92, 95%CI: 0.87-0.97), and distress (RR = 0.92, 95%CI: 0.87-0.98). Body image concerns with appearance mediated 7%, 8.8%, and 14.5% of the association between physical activity and depressive symptoms, anxiety, and distress, respectively. Conclusion: Older female cancer survivors reported body image concerns, which were associated with both physical activity and psychological health. Our findings suggest that interventions designed to address body image concerns in older female cancer survivors could serve to improve the benefit of physical activity on psychological health.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The aim of the present study is to investigate the prevalence of body image distress among head and neck cancer (HNC) patients after treatment and to examine its association with sociodemographic and clinical factors, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), HNC symptoms, sexuality, self-compassion, and psychological distress. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to study associations with sociodemographic and clinical factors, HRQOL (EORTC QLQ-C30), HNC symptoms (QLQ-HN43), sexuality (FSFI-6; IIEF-5), self-compassion (SCS-SF), and psychological distress (HADS). Qualitative data from a body image writing intervention was used to explore experiences in daily life related to body image. Results Body image distress was prevalent in 13–20% (depending on cut-off scores) of 233 HNC patients. Symptoms of depression ( p < 0.001), younger age ( p < 0.001), problems with social contact ( p = 0.001), problems with wound healing ( p = 0.013), and larger extent of surgery ( p = 0.014) were associated with having body image distress. This model explained 67% of variance. Writing interventions of 40 HNC patients showed that negative body image experiences were related to appearance and function, with social functioning problems described most often. Conclusion Prevalence of body image distress in HNC patients, using different cut-off scores, is 13–20%. Younger patients, patients after extensive surgery, and patients who had wound healing problems are most at risk. There is a significant association between body image distress and depressive symptoms and social functioning.

Abstract:In parallel with the rapid rise in breast cancer incidence, there is also a noticeable rise in the number of patients who experience persistent negative body image cognition after breast cancer surgery. This study aimed to explore the differences in illness perception, social support, and body image cognition among breast cancer patients with different surgical methods, and the correlation, regression, and mediation among the three variables. The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) and the Body Image Cognition after Breast Cancer Questionnaire (BIBCQ) were used to evaluate breast cancer patients’ illness perception, social support and body image cognition. Data analyses were performed by descriptive statistics, independent samples t -test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation, and linear regression. The mediation was explored by the PROCESS V3.3. The study found that breast cancer patients undergoing radical mastectomy (RM) and modified radical mastectomy (MRM) demonstrated more negative illness perception, body image cognition, and lower social support compared with the patients receiving nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM; p < 0.05). The subscale cognitive representation (CR) of BIPQ was strongly positively correlated with BIBCQ ( p < 0.05). Illness perception positively predicted body image cognition ( p < 0.01), while social support negatively predicted body image cognition. Social support partially mediated illness perception and body image cognition, exhibiting a positive role in post-operative body image cognition.

Abstract:High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) method was applied in this study to comparatively evaluate the stability of tablets in their original package which 150 mg of Ranitidine from six different pharmaceutical laboratories in the market, according to ICH conditions for accelerated testing: 40 degrees C, 75% RH with and without light for six months. The stability at environmental conditions was evaluated for a twelve-month period, with and without light, with the same purpose. Ranitidine is widely used to treat peptic ulcer diseases. Ranitidine is susceptible to degradation under the influence of light, humidity and temperature. The chromatographic conditions were: RP-18 column of 250 mm yen 4 mm ID and a particle size of 5 mm; mobile phase of Acetonitrile-Ammonium acetate solution (0.2 M) (70:30; v/v) (pH*6) adjusted with glacial acetic acid; flow rate of 1 ml min-1; 25 degrees C of temperature; detection at 322 nm; injection volume of 20 ml, using height peak as the integration parameter. The results obtained at six months indicate that the stability of Ranitidine depends on the correct formulation and the primary container. The remaining content of Ranitidine, dissolved percentage in vitro and total impurity percentage were determined by HPLC. Organoleptic characteristics were visually examined. The proposed analytical method was validated and linearity, precision and selectivity were determined. Degradation products were detected.
Attachment styles, self‐compassion, and psychological adjustment in long‐term breast cancer survivors

Abstract:The increasing numbers of breast cancer survivors highlight the importance of delineating factors that identify women who are at risk of poor psychological adjustment in the long term. In breast cancer survivors, higher attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance have been associated with poorer psychological adjustment. Moreover, there is evidence that self‐compassion, a kind manner of treating oneself during difficulties, is associated with psychological distress in this population. This study aimed to extend the association between attachment styles and psychological adjustment to the context of long‐term breast cancer survivors, and to determine whether lower self‐compassion underlies this association.Participants (<i>N</i>=82) were recruited through emailed invitations to members of the Review & Survey Group of Breast Cancer Network Australia. Following online consent, participants completed measures assessing attachment styles, self‐compassion, psychological stress, and the perceived negative impact of cancer. Bootstrapping analyses using the PROCESS macro were used to test the significance of indirect effects. As hypothesised, correlational analyses revealed that higher attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were significantly and positively associated with stress and perceived negative impact of cancer. Bootstrapping analyses revealed significant indirect effects of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance (on both stress and perceived negative impact of cancer) through lower self‐compassion.These findings suggest that self‐compassion training may be useful for enhancing the psychological adjustment of long‐term breast cancer survivors. Future longitudinal and experimental studies in more diverse samples are needed to confirm causal directionality of these relationships and to expand upon these findings.

Abstract:Background: Women having undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer have experiences which are very much individual and contextual. In order to understand the women and improve their quality of life, the aim of this study was to investigate life satisfaction, body image and associated factors among Swedish women with breast cancer after mastectomy. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study enrolled 481 Swedish women with breast cancer after mastectomy who completed a questionnaire comprising socio-demographic characteristics, sources of information, and life satisfaction and body image (outcome variables). Multiple linear regression analyses were used to estimate relationships between socio-demographic characteristics, information support, sources of information, treatment variables, and outcome variables. Results: All dimensions of life satisfaction were associated with body image. Treatment options were factors associated with life satisfaction, while sources of information were a factor that increased life satisfaction in the dimensions of physical symptoms, sickness impact and quality of close-friend relationship. Underlying disease, age 31-45 years, chemotherapy and breast reconstruction increased body image dissatisfaction. Conclusion: The finding that some socio-demographic characteristics, treatment options and sources of information were associated with life dissatisfaction and body image dissatisfaction can increase healthcare professionals' understanding of women with breast cancer after treatment. They should provide accurate and realistic information, focus attention on the women's needs, and prepare psychological intervention programs that make the women cope with their life situations during follow-up care.

Abstract:Background: The body image of patients with cancer can be negatively affected due to treatment toxicities. Changes in body image may cause patients to experience social appearance anxiety. This study aimed to evaluate the body image and social appearance anxiety of patients with cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 153 patients with cancer undergoing radiotherapy in a university hospital. The data were collected with a Patient Information Form, the Body Image Scale, and the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Skin Toxicity Criteria. Results: Patients' mean body image score was 15.18 ± 8.26 (min = 0, max = 30), mean social appearance anxiety score was 45.29 ± 14.50 (min = 16, max = 80). Patients with low education levels and low-income levels had higher body image and social appearance anxiety scores (p < 0.01). Body image and social appearance anxiety scores were found to be higher in patients with advanced cancer, grade III-IV skin toxicity, pain, fatigue, and constipation (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Radiotherapy may negatively affect body image and social appearance anxiety. Assessments of body image and social appearance anxiety regularly before, during, and after treatment are essential. Psychosocial support should be provided to patients to reduce body image and social appearance anxiety and increase their well-being. Patients with cancer especially those who have low income and education levels, advanced cancer stage and skin toxicity, and suffer from pain, fatigue, constipation, etc. should be supported by methods such as counseling and social support groups.
