Abstract:The practical utility of sentiment analysis as applied in financial forecasting is limited, and often exaggerated in a misleading way. The costs of its implementation often outweigh the potential benefits, and the absence of a causal link between financial news sentiment and stock market performance makes the observed correlation unsustainable. Through a detailed literature review, this paper presents an analysis of the common methodological flaws in existing studies, such as data leakage, arbitrary lag selection, and inconsistencies in time frames. This paper concludes that sentiment analysis is not the ideal tool in facilitating financial forecasting, emphasizing the need for more transparent justification and methodological rigor.
Predict financial text sentiment: an empirical examination

Abstract:Purpose Stock market has always been lucrative for various investors. But, because of its speculative nature, it is difficult to predict the price movement. Investors have been using both fundamental and technical analysis to predict the prices. Fundamental analysis helps to study structured data of the company. Technical analysis helps to study price trends, and with the increasing and easy availability of unstructured data have made it important to study the market sentiment. Market sentiment has a major impact on the prices in short run. Hence, the purpose is to understand the market sentiment timely and effectively. Design/methodology/approach The research includes text mining and then creating various models for classification. The accuracy of these models is checked using confusion matrix. Findings Out of the six machine learning techniques used to create the classification model, kernel support vector machine gave the highest accuracy of 68%. This model can be now used to analyse the tweets, news and various other unstructured data to predict the price movement. Originality/value This study will help investors classify a news or a tweet into "positive", "negative" or "neutral" quickly and determine the stock price trends.

Abstract:Abstract: Predicting movements in the stock market is a novel use of sentiment analysis's growing body of knowledge. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of NLP for predicting stock market movements by analyzing textual data sources such as news articles, social media posts, as well as earnings reports. The research examines current approaches, applications, and difficulties in sentiment analysis by drawing on extensive surveys and reviews [1], [2]. It also investigates the use of pre-trained models in NLP and the potential biases of such models [6]. Important research findings [3], [17] suggest that NLP-based sentiment analysis models, especially those employing deep learning architectures, show promising results in financial forecasting. There are, however, several difficulties associated with these models. These include the requirement of huge datasets and the elimination of biases. This study has far-reaching ramifications. One benefit is a more nuanced comprehension of the potential and pitfalls of natural language processing for sentiment analysis in the financial markets, which is useful for both analysts and investors. Second, it provides opportunities for more study to enhance the precision and dependability of such models, which ultimately aids in the development of more steady and well-informed monetary judgements.

Abstract:Financial market forecasting is one of the most attractive practical applications of sentiment analysis. In this paper, we investigate the potential of using sentiment \emph{attitudes} (positive vs negative) and also sentiment \emph{emotions} (joy, sadness, etc.) extracted from financial news or tweets to help predict stock price movements. Our extensive experiments using the \emph{Granger-causality} test have revealed that (i) in general sentiment attitudes do not seem to Granger-cause stock price changes; and (ii) while on some specific occasions sentiment emotions do seem to Granger-cause stock price changes, the exhibited pattern is not universal and must be looked at on a case by case basis. Furthermore, it has been observed that at least for certain stocks, integrating sentiment emotions as additional features into the machine learning based market trend prediction model could improve its accuracy.

Abstract:As machine learning ascends the peak of computer science zeitgeist, the usage and experimentation with sentiment analysis using various forms of textual data seems pervasive. The effect is especially pronounced in formulating securities trading strategies, due to a plethora of reasons including the relative ease of implementation and the abundance of academic research suggesting automated sentiment analysis can be productively used in trading strategies. The source data for such analyzers ranges a broad spectrum like social media feeds, micro-blogs, real-time news feeds, ex-post financial data etc. The abstract technique underlying these analyzers involve supervised learning of sentiment classification where the classifier is trained on annotated source corpus, and accuracy is measured by testing how well the classifiers generalizes on unseen test data from the corpus. Post training, and validation of fitted models, the classifiers are used to execute trading strategies, and the corresponding returns are compared with appropriate benchmark returns (for e.g., the S&P500 returns). In this paper, we introduce $\underline{a\ novel\ technique\ of\ using\ price\ volatilities\ to\ empirically\ determine\ the\ sentiment\ in\ news\ data}$, instead of the traditional reverse approach. We also perform meta sentiment analysis by evaluating the efficacy of existing sentiment classifiers and the precise definition of sentiment from securities trading context. We scrutinize the efficacy of using human-annotated sentiment classification and the tacit assumptions that introduces subjective bias in existing financial news sentiment classifiers.

Abstract:In practice, time series forecasting involves the creation of models that generalize data from past values and produce future predictions. Moreover, regarding financial time series forecasting, it can be assumed that the procedure involves phenomena partly shaped by the social environment. Thus, the present work is concerned with the study of the use of sentiment analysis methods in data extracted from social networks and their utilization in multivariate prediction architectures that involve financial data. Through an extensive experimental process, 22 different input setups using such extracted information were tested, over a total of 16 different datasets, under the schemes of 27 different algorithms. The comparisons were structured under two case studies. The first concerns possible improvements in the performance of the forecasts in light of the use of sentiment analysis systems in time series forecasting. The second, having as a framework all the possible versions of the above configuration, concerns the selection of the methods that perform best. The results, as presented by various illustrations, indicate, on the one hand, the conditional improvement of predictability after the use of specific sentiment setups in long-term forecasts and, on the other, a universal predominance of long short-term memory architectures.

Abstract:Using algorithmically scored sentiment of almost 730.000 news articles between Q1 2003 and Q4 2021, we construct an index and analyze its predictive power for US inflation for up to eight quarters. In a pseudo out-of-sample setting, we show that sentiment is able to forecast inflation more accurately than a naïve random walk with root mean squared errors that are around 30 percent lower depending on the forecasting horizon. Against other often used benchmarks, forecasting models using macroeconomic variables and Michigan surveys, forecasting accuracy of our sentiment index tends to outperform for shorter forecasting horizons.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis is widely adopted in studying various important topics in business intelligence. Though many studies reported interesting results by using machine learning, the lack of theoretic analysis and the shortage of practical guidance are hurdles of theory development. Besides, due to the difficulty in labelling data, the effectiveness of sentiment analysis with only labelled data needs to be questioned. In this paper, we drew on statistical learning theory to perform extensive theoretic analysis in sentiment analysis by using real corporate financial reports. We investigated when and why machine learning methods provide preferred performance under the guidance of the theory. We also provided practical suggestions in applying machine learning methods for both researchers and practitioners. In addition, we utilized the cheap and ubiquitous unlabelled data to further improve the sentiment analysis performance. This has the potential to largely reduce the manual data labelling work and to scale up the experiments.

Abstract:Typical investors start off the day by going through the daily news to get an intuition about the performance of the market. The speculations based on the tone of the news ultimately shape their responses towards the market. Today, computers are being trained to compute the news sentiment so that it can be used as a variable to predict stock market movements and returns. Some researchers have even developed news-based market indices to forecast stock market returns. Majority of the research in the field of news sentiment analysis has focussed on using libraries like Vader, Loughran-McDonald (LM), Harvard IV and Pattern. However, are the popular approaches for measuring financial news sentiment really approaching the problem of sentiment analysis correctly? Our experiments suggest that measuring sentiments using these libraries, especially for financial news, fails to depict the true picture and hence may not be very reliable. Therefore, the question remains: What is the most effective and accurate approach to measure financial news sentiment? Abstract:Financial market prediction on the basis of online sentiment tracking has drawn a lot of attention recently. However, most results in this emerging domain rely on a unique, particular combination of data sets and sentiment tracking tools. This makes it difficult to disambiguate measurement and instrument effects from factors that are actually involved in the apparent relation between online sentiment and market values. In this paper, we survey a range of online data sets (Twitter feeds, news headlines, and volumes of Google search queries) and sentiment tracking methods (Twitter Investor Sentiment, Negative News Sentiment and Tweet & Google Search volumes of financial terms), and compare their value for financial prediction of market indices such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, trading volumes, and market volatility (VIX), as well as gold prices. We also compare the predictive power of traditional investor sentiment survey data, i.e. Investor Intelligence and Daily Sentiment Index, against those of the mentioned set of online sentiment indicators. Our results show that traditional surveys of Investor Intelligence are lagging indicators of the financial markets. However, weekly Google Insight Search volumes on financial search queries do have predictive value. An indicator of Twitter Investor Sentiment and the frequency of occurrence of financial terms on Twitter in the previous 1-2 days are also found to be very statistically significant predictors of daily market log return. Survey sentiment indicators are however found not to be statistically significant predictors of financial market values, once we control for all other mood indicators as well as the VIX.

Abstract:Objectives: The main objective in Sentiment Analysis, and financial data is to decode sentiments through the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML). This provides insights into market trends that are essential for risk management and well-informed financial decisions. By removing emotion from financial writing, gives stakeholders practical advice for wise investments in dynamic markets. The main objective is to increase the accuracy of Multinomial Naïve Bayes (Multinomial NB). In this work, we used purely ML models to get the accuracy more than the previous works, which got 74%, and in this work, we can see the accuracy increased to approximately 82%. Methods: This specific Research Work employs Machine Learning approaches to extract sentiment polarity (positive, negative, and neutral) from financial text data. The used ML models are- Multinomial Naïve Bayes (Multinomial NB), Logistic Regression (LR), KNeighbors, Decision Tree, and Random Forest algorithms are used for Sentiment Analysis. Findings: Studies conducted in the financial sector have shown that sentiment and informational substance in stock news have a big impact on market factors such as trading volume, volatility, stock prices, and corporate earnings. This study involves approximately 6000 newspaper articles to extract the polarity from financial text data. The incorporation of Multinomial NB of Natural Language Processing techniques results in a marginal improvement in the sentiment classification model performance among all the models used, where the previous works got the lowest accuracy of 74%. Novelty: This research introduces advanced ML models for extracting financial sentiment from text, including Random Forest, LR, KNeighbors, Decision Tree, and Multinomial NB previously unexplored in similar studies. Notably, the Multinomial NB model accuracy rose significantly from 65% to 82%. The study also presents sentiment segregation (positive, negative, neutral) visualized in a donut chart. Abstract:Sentiment Analysis, also known as Opinion Mining, gained prominence in the early 2000s alongside the emergence of internet forums, blogs, and social media platforms. Researchers and businesses recognized the imperative to automate the extraction of valuable insights from the vast pool of textual data generated online. Its utility in the business domain is undeniable, offering actionable insights into customer opinions and attitudes, empowering data-driven decisions that enhance products, services, and customer satisfaction. The expansion of Sentiment Analysis into the financial sector came as a direct consequence, prompting the adaptation of powerful Natural Language Processing models to these contexts. In this study, we rigorously test numerous classical Machine Learning classification algorithms and ensembles against five contemporary Deep Learning Pre-Trained models, like BERT, RoBERTa, and three variants of FinBERT. However, its aim extends beyond evaluating the performance of modern methods, especially those designed for financial tasks, to a comparison of them with classical ones. We also explore how different text representation and data augmentation techniques impact classification outcomes when classical methods are employed. The study yields a wealth of intriguing results, which are thoroughly discussed.
Using Financial News Sentiment for Stock Price Direction Prediction

Abstract:Using sentiment information in the analysis of financial markets has attracted much attention. Natural language processing methods can be used to extract market sentiment information from texts such as news articles. The objective of this paper is to extract financial market sentiment information from news articles and use the estimated sentiment scores to predict the price direction of the stock market index Standard & Poor's 500. To achieve the best possible performance in sentiment classification, state-of-the-art bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) models are used. The pretrained transformer networks are fine-tuned on a labeled financial text dataset and applied to news articles from known providers of financial news content to predict their sentiment scores. The generated sentiment scores for the titles of the given news articles, for the (text) content of said news articles, and for the combined title-content consideration are posited against past time series information of the stock market index. To forecast the price direction of the stock market index, the predicted sentiment scores are used in a simple strategy and as features for a random forest classifier. The results show that sentiment scores based on news content are particularly useful for stock price direction prediction.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of investor sentiment on excess equity return forecasting. A high (low) investor sentiment may weaken the connection between fundamental economic (behavioral-based nonfundamental) predictors and market returns. We find that although fundamental variables can be strong predictors when sentiment is low, they tend to lose their predictive power when investor sentiment is high. Nonfundamental predictors perform well during high-sentiment periods while their predictive ability deteriorates when investor sentiment is low. These paradigm shifts in equity return forecasting provide a key to understanding and resolving the lack of predictive power for both fundamental and nonfundamental variables debated in recent studies. Abstract:Prediction and quantification of future volatility and returns play an important role in financial modeling, both in portfolio optimisation and risk management. Natural language processing today allows one to process news and social media comments to detect signals of investors' confidence. We have explored the relationship between sentiment extracted from financial news and tweets and FTSE100 movements. We investigated the strength of the correlation between sentiment measures on a given day and market volatility and returns observed the next day. We found that there is evidence of correlation between sentiment and stock market movements. Moreover, the sentiment captured from news headlines could be used as a signal to predict market returns; we also found that the same does not apply for volatility. However, for the sentiment found in Twitter comments we obtained, in a surprising finding, a correlation coefficient of –0.7 ( p < 0.05), which indicates a strong negative correlation between negative sentiment captured from the tweets on a given day and the volatility observed the next day. It is important to keep in mind that stock volatility rises greatly when the market collapses but not symmetrically so when it goes up (the so-called leverage effect). We developed an accurate classifier for the prediction of market volatility in response to the arrival of new information by deploying topic modeling, based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation, in order to extract feature vectors from a collection of tweets and financial news. The obtained features were used as additional input to the classifier. Thanks to the combination of sentiment and topic modeling even on modest (essentially personal) architecture our classifier achieved a directional prediction accuracy for volatility of 63%.

Abstract:The development and wealth of countries depend heavily on the stock market. Data mining and artificial intelligence methods are required to analyze stock market data. The financial success of particular businesses is one of the important factors that has a significant impact on stock price volatility. However, news reports also have a significant impact on how the stock market moves. In this research, we use sentiment classification to use non-measurable data, such as financial news articles, to forecast a company's future stock trend. We seek to cast light on the effect of news reports on the stock market by analyzing the connection between news and stock movement. Our study seeks to advance knowledge of the function of news sentiment in forecasting stock market trends.

Abstract:When forecasting financial time series, incorporating relevant sentiment analysis data into the feature space is a common assumption to increase the capacities of the model. In addition, deep learning architectures and state-of-the-art schemes are increasingly used due to their efficiency. This work compares state-of-the-art methods in financial time series forecasting incorporating sentiment analysis. Through an extensive experimental process, 67 different feature setups consisting of stock closing prices and sentiment scores were tested on a variety of different datasets and metrics. In total, 30 state-of-the-art algorithmic schemes were used over two case studies: one comparing methods and one comparing input feature setups. The aggregated results indicate, on the one hand, the prevalence of a proposed method and, on the other, a conditional improvement in model efficiency after the incorporation of sentiment setups in certain forecast time frames.

Abstract:Sentimental Analysis is one of the most popular technique which is widely been used in every industry. Extraction of sentiments from user's comments is used in detecting the user view for a particular company. Sentimental Analysis can help in predicting the mood of people which affects the stock prices and thus can help in prediction of actual prices. In this paper sentimental analysis is performed on the data extracted from Twitter and Stock Twits. The data is analyzed to compute the mood of user's comment. These comments are categorized into four category which are happy, up, down and rejected. The polarity index along with market data is supplied to an artificial neural network to predict the results.

Abstract:Forecasting data in financial markets is a pertinent task in the modern world. The ability to predict market movements helps investors avoid obvious risks and spare themselves additional expenses. Numerous trading platforms have been developed to quickly access extensive historical data, enabling real-time analysis of the financial market from any corner of the planet using only a laptop or personal computer. Such platforms allow the development of unique strategies and approaches based on fundamental or technical analysis, taking into account news about a particular company, its earnings, capitalization, and the amount of dividends it is expected to pay on time. Business news is a crucial source of information about the state of the economy and markets. They can be used for forecasting future events. One method of forecasting based on business news is sentiment analysis. Sentiment analysis allows assessing the positivity or negativity of business news.Traditional sentiment analysis methods employ a symmetric approach. This means that positive and negative news are equally considered in forecasting. However, in the real world, positive news may have a greater impact on markets than negative news. This is because positive news can stimulate economic activity, while negative news may hinder it. The article explores the application of asymmetric sentiment analysis of business news in financial data forecasting systems. Various methods of sentiment analysis of business news, their advantages, and disadvantages are analyzed. A new approach to sentiment analysis of business news is proposed, which comprehensively utilizes artificial neural networks and principal component analysis.
