Abstract:In this article, the author problematizes studies of immigrant communities within Europe at the intersection of the categories “border/borderland” – “memory” – “immigrant communities”, revealing the special role of memory in this triad. To achieve this goal, in the first part of the article the author will present a number of approaches to the study of borderlands in its different dimensions – with an emphasis on the “hard” territorial aspect of this phenomenon. The focus will then be on the soft border and its features. Next, “immigrant communities” will be characterized as “soft borderlands”. Based on the concept of “active borders” by K. Muller and the study of immigrant youth in different countries under the leadership of J. Berry will be problematized some possible foci of research into the memory of representatives of immigrant communities on the “borderland of soft borders” in host communities.
