Abstract:The cabinet secretary for health and social care in Scotland, recognising that racism is a public health issue, published a statement in September 2024 outlining various anti-racism measures, including asking health boards to develop and deliver their own plans.1 This echoes Kar's statement that the NHS needs anti-racist action, not empty words or virtue signalling.2Racism is a major public health challenge and the NHS has a key role in tackling it by reducing racialised health inequalities and creating a more equitable health and care system.3 Anti-racism means actively standing up against racism; challenging and changing the policies, practices, beliefs, and behaviours that unjustly disadvantage people from minority ethnic groups; and being proactive in creating a more inclusive and fair society.1To help support the development of anti-racism plans, national guidance has been produced by the Scottish government.
