Abstract:The Palearctic-African migratory circuit has been typically associated with birds. Very few insects are known to endure annual trans-Saharan circuits, but the Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) is an exception. While it was demonstrated that this species massively migrates from Europe to the Afrotropics during the autumn, the existence of a reverse migration from the Afrotropics to Europe in the early spring remains hypothetical. Here, we analysed wing stable hydrogen isotope values (δ2H) of V. cardui migrants collected from February to April across the circum-Mediterranean region. We assessed their region of natal origin by comparing their wing isotope signature predicted δ2H values (isoscape). The results unambiguously demonstrate a sub-Saharan origin for many individuals, especially those collected in February, representing the first tangible evidence for a reverse northwards trans-Saharan migration in spring. This work supports the view that the Afrotropics (mostly exploited from September to February) is key in the V. cardui Palearctic-African population dynamics. This species relies on both temperate and tropical habitats to complete their multigenerational cycle, an unprecedented adaptation for butterflies and for most migratory insects. Such a migratory circuit has strong parallelisms with those of migratory birds.
Long-distance autumn migration across the Sahara by painted lady butterflies: exploiting resource pulses in the tropical savannah

Abstract:The painted lady, Vanessa cardui, is a migratory butterfly that performs an annual multi-generational migration between Europe and North Africa. Its seasonal appearance south of the Sahara in autumn is well known and has led to the suggestion that it results from extremely long migratory flights by European butterflies to seasonally exploit the Sahel and the tropical savannah. However, this possibility has remained unproven. Here, we analyse the isotopic composition of butterflies from seven European and seven African countries to provide new support for this hypothesis. Each individual was assigned a geographical natal origin, based on its wing stable hydrogen isotope (δ2Hw) value and a predicted δ2Hw basemap for Europe and northern Africa. Natal assignments of autumn migrants collected south of the Sahara confirmed long-distance movements (of 4000 km or more) starting in Europe. Samples from Maghreb revealed a mixed origin of migrants, with most individuals with a European origin, but others having originated in the Sahel. Therefore, autumn movements are not only directed to northwestern Africa, but also include southward and northward flights across the Sahara. Through this remarkable behaviour, the productive but highly seasonal region south of the Sahara is incorporated into the migratory circuit of V. cardui.
Recent climate change is creating hotspots of butterfly increase and decline across North America

Abstract:<p>Some insect populations are experiencing dramatic declines, endangering the crucial ecosystem services they provide. Yet, other populations appear robust, highlighting the need to better define patterns and underlying drivers of recent change in insect numbers. We examined abundance and biodiversity trends for North American butterflies using a unique citizen‐science dataset that has recorded observations of over 8 million butterflies across 456 species, 503 sites, nine ecoregions, and 26 years. Butterflies are a biodiverse group of pollinators, herbivores, and prey, making them useful bellwethers of environmental change. We found great heterogeneity in butterfly species' abundance trends, aggregating near zero, but with a tendency toward decline. There was strong spatial clustering, however, into regions of increase, decrease, or relative stasis. Recent precipitation and temperature appeared to largely drive these patterns, with butterflies generally declining at increasingly dry and hot sites but increasing at relatively wet or cool sites. In contrast, landscape and butterfly trait predictors had little influence, though abundance trends were slightly more positive around urban areas. Consistent with varying responses by different species, no overall directional change in butterfly species richness or evenness was detected. Overall, a mosaic of butterfly decay and rebound hotspots appeared to largely reflect geographic variability in climate drivers. Ongoing controversy about insect declines might dissipate with a shift in focus to the causes of heterogeneous responses among taxa and sites, with climate change emerging as a key suspect when pollinator communities are broadly impacted.</p>

Feeding on migratory butterflies: opportunistic observations of birds preying on the Painted Lady Vanessa cardui

Abstract:Many butterfly species are often seen with severe wing damage, which is regarded as evidence of unsuccessful predation, most likely by insectivorous birds. However, observations of bird predation are rare for the vast majority of butterflies. During a long-term study of the ecology of the Painted Lady Vanessa cardui, a common migratory butterfly, a high frequency of wing damage was noted, especially in North African populations. Attacks by several bird species were confirmed during fieldwork which, along with a number of published and unpublished records from ornithological colleagues, are reported in this note. Twenty-four bird species have been recorded preying on the Painted Lady in the Palaearctic-Afrotropical region. Records from eight additional species from the Nearctic region were obtained from photographs and from the literature. With 16 families (13 passerines and three non-passerines), this bird community embraces a notable diversity of morphologies and prey-capture techniques. The most represented families were the Tyrannidae, the Sylviidae and the Turdidae while the species most frequently recorded as predators were European Bee-eater Merops apiaster, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater Merops persicus, White-crowned Wheater Oenanthe leucopyga, and Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. Most observations occurred in March–April and October when the Painted Lady migrates in large numbers, suggesting that a sudden increase in abundance may lead to a regular use of this resource by predators. Moreover, unsuccessful attacks are common, which suggests that butterflies may quite often escape with some form of wing damage. The consequences these interactions have on butterfly populations are speculative but deserve further study.

Abstract:The painted lady butterfly is renowned for its virtually cosmopolitan distribution and the remarkable long-distance migrations that are part of its annual, multi-generational migratory cycle. Recently, individuals were found north and south of the Sahara in the autumn, suggesting distinct migratory behaviours within the species. However, the evolutionary and ecological factors shaping these differences in migratory behaviour remain largely unexplored. Here, we performed whole-genome resequencing and analysed the hydrogen and strontium isotopes of 40 individuals simultaneously collected in the autumn from regions both north and south of the Sahara. Our investigation revealed two main migratory groups: (i) short-distance migrants, journeying from temperate Europe to the circum-Mediterranean region and (ii) long-distance migrants, originating from Europe, crossing the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara, and reaching West Africa, covering up to over 4,000 km. Despite these stark differences in migration distance, a genome-wide analysis revealed that both short- and long-distance migrants belong to a single intercontinental panmictic population extending from northern Europe to sub-Saharan Africa. Contrary to common biogeographic patterns, the Sahara is not a catalyst for population structuring in this species. No significant genetic differentiation or signs of adaptation and selection were observed between the two migratory phenotypes (pairwise F = 0.001 ± 0.006). Nonetheless, two individuals, which were early arrivals to West Africa and covered longer migration distances, exhibited some genetic differentiation. The lack of genetic structure between short- and long-distance migrants suggests that migration distance in is a plastic response to environmental conditions.

Abstract:The decline in abundance and species richness of insects, including butterflies, have been linked to factors such as habitat loss and climate change. While some butterfly species are increasing, an overall decrease has been frequently observed in both Europe and North America. The objective of this study was to assess trends of butterfly abundances in Mediterranean shrublands of conserved lands in San Diego County, CA, USA. Funding and surveys were focused on the threatened Hermes copper ( Lycaena hermes ), but the abundance of all butterfly species was recorded. Analyses utilized the annual maximum count (Max Count) for each species at each transect during 2010–2022. The 10 most commonly observed species experienced, on average, a 1.4% annual decline in abundance, and 20 less commonly observed species were, on average, found at 5.9% fewer transects each year. The only exceptions to these declines are species (cabbage white [ Pieris rapae ], checkered white [ Pontia protodice ], and white checkered-skipper [ Burnsius albezens ]) that feed on non-native mustards or are more common in disturbed habitats. The Max Count provided an efficient, robust, and stable population index, that can be utilized to leverage funding for focal species to assess the broader community.

Abstract:The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a vagile species that undertakes an annual, multi-generational migration across North America. The abundance of this species at both eastern and western overwintering sites in Central Mexico and California indicates a population decline. Success of continental-scale conservation programs for a migratory species depends on providing, maintaining, and protecting habitats at appropriate temporal and spatial scales. Here, dynamics of monarch continental-scale migration and gene flow were obtained by combined stable isotope, morphological, and genetic analyses. These analyses were applied to temporal monarch samples collected from May to September during 2016-2021 at locations in Iowa, USA and spatial collections from Pennsylvania, Delaware, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Idaho, Hawaii, 3 Australian locations during July and August 2016, and Texas in April 2021. Evidence of seasonal multi-generational migration was obtained through δ2H analyses of spatial collections, which was corroborated by decreased wing hue (a morphological marker for non-migratory individuals). In Iowa, 10-15% of monarchs represented migrants from southern areas throughout the breeding season and 6% were migrants from the North in midsummer. Limited sequence variation detected across the mitochondrial genome impacted the capability to detect significant population genetic variation in our North American samples. However, 2 novel substitutions were identified and predicted to be fixed among Australia samples, contributing to intercontinental differentiation from counterparts in North America. Our assessment of temporal and spatial population dynamics across the North American monarch breeding range provides insight into continental-scale migration and previously undetected mitochondrial DNA variation among globally distributed populations.

Abstract:Climate change exerts significant impacts on ecosystems through extreme climate events (ECEs), which are linked to various climate variables and can occur in different seasons. However, previous studies predominantly focus on a single type of ECE within specific seasons. We address this research gap by examining four typical types of ECEs: droughts, pluvials, heatwaves, and coldwaves, which are consistently defined and identified on a daily scale using a recently proposed statistical method. Butterflies in England serve as our study subject since their life stages occur throughout the year, and we had access to a 45-year dataset encompassing 57 butterfly species. First, we analyzed the correlation between abundance changes and the severity of ECEs, revealing varying sensitivity to ECEs across different life stages. Notably, abundance changes are negatively correlated with the severity of heatwaves in the hibernation, egg, and larval stages, as well as with the severity of pluvials in the larval, pupal, and adult stages. Second, we identified the most extreme climate events (MECEs) in England in the period from 1950 to 2020 and linked them with synchronized abundance changes for all species. MECEs in the sensitive stages of butterflies are frequently (for eight out of 11 MECEs) associated with synchronized decreases in their abundance. Our findings underscore the importance of considering diverse types of ECEs across all seasons to gain insights into their potential ecosystem effects. We draw attention to the fact that our analyses are primarily data-driven, with limited ecophysiological interpretation.

Abstract:Birdwatching is a global phenomenon involving many thousands of people. Citizen science generates data providing insights into global patterns of bird distribution across space and time, yet how the pandemic may cast a longer shadow remains unassessed. Here, we explore whether pandemic restrictions influenced observations globally from 2020-May 2021, considering also GDPc and tourism income. We analysed 10,338 bird species (93% of all bird species) and found that whilst high-income regions recover to pre-pandemic assessment rates quickly, middle and low-income regions remain at low levels. Furthermore, protected areas see huge losses in recorded richness. Whilst observer count increased overall, the number of bird species recorded dramatically decreased, especially in 2020. These trends are most marked in developing countries and regions, especially where tourism is important. Due to increased bushmeat consumption during the pandemic, some species may become more threatened, but with no data we cannot yet discern such trends.
A global database of butterfly species native distributions

Abstract:Butterflies represent a diverse group of insects, playing key ecosystem roles such as pollination and their larval form engage in herbivory. Despite their importance, comprehensive global distribution data for butterfly species are lacking. This lack of comprehensive global data has hindered many large‐scale questions in ecology, evolutionary biology, and conservation at the regional and global scales. Here, I use an integrative workflow that combines occurrence records, alpha hull polygons, species' dispersal capacity, and natural habitat and environmental variables within a framework of species distribution models to generate species‐level native distributions for butterflies at a global scale in the contemporary period. The database releases native range maps for 10,372 extant species of butterflies at a spatial grain resolution of 5 arcmin (~10 km). This database has the potential to allow unprecedented large‐scale analyses in ecology, biogeography, and conservation of butterflies. The maps are available in the WGS84 coordinate reference system (EPSG:4326 code) and stored as vector polygons in the GEOPACKAGE format for maximum compression, allowing easy data manipulation using a standard computer. I additionally provide each species' spatial raster. All maps and R scripts are open access and available for download in Dryad and Zenodo, respectively, and are guided by FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles. By making these data available to the scientific community, I aim to advance the sharing of biological data to stimulate more comprehensive research in ecology, biogeography, and conservation of butterflies.

Abstract:The study consulted 1119 references to produce 19,488 records of larval foodplants for European butterflies. This resulted in 5589 larval host plant records for 464 European butterfly species, with multiple references, enabling information to be checked. Significant issues were identified for 3.9% of records extracted from references due to mistakes, ambiguous or unknown plant names, distribution issues, resulting in information being lost. Butterflies are charismatic insects and have been well studied, particularly in Europe. They are disproportionately used in generating and testing hypotheses; on everything from general evolutionary processes, such as speciation or host association dynamics; to conservation‐related studies, such as climate change or habitat loss. Accurate lists of the larval foodplants for European butterflies are not readily available. Mistakes are propagated and information cannot be checked for accuracy. The level of evidence is unknown, and how usage varies between countries is poorly understood. The study consulted 1119 references to produce 19,488 records of larval foodplants for European butterflies. This resulted in 5589 larval host plant records for 464 European butterfly species, with multiple references, enabling information to be checked. Information was unavailable for 59 species. The level of evidence for each relationship shows the current state of knowledge. Significant issues were identified for 3.9% of records extracted from references due to mistakes, ambiguous or unknown plant names, distribution issues, resulting in information being lost. Plants with questionable distributions suggest either mis‐identification or species that have been split. Little is known about plant usage in Eastern Europe. The larval foodplants of many monophagous and Satyrinae butterflies are poorly studied. Only 63% of threatened 2010 Red Listed butterflies have reliable host plant records. The study has provided ecologists with a valuable resource, of a more accurate checklist of the larval foodplants for each European country. Why plant usage varies over a butterfly's distribution opens up some interesting research questions.

Abstract:Migration is a complex behavior involving the synchronisation of many physiological and behavioral processes. Environmental cues must thus be interpreted to make decisions regarding resource allocation between, for example, migration or reproduction. In butterflies, the lack of host plants to sustain a new generation may indicate the need to migrate. Here, we used the painted lady butterfly ( ) as a model to characterize gene expression variation in response to host plant availability. Assessment of the response to host plant availability in adult female butterflies revealed significant modifications in gene expression, particularly within hormonal pathways (ecdysone oxidase and juvenile hormone esterase). We therefore hypothesize that tuning the ecdysone pathway may play a crucial role in regulating the timing of migration and reproduction in adult female painted lady butterflies. In addition, our analysis revealed significant enrichment of genes associated with lipid, carbohydrate, and vitamin biosynthesis, as well as the immune response. As environmental acquisition occurs throughout the life cycle, we also tracked gene expression responses to two other environmental cues across major developmental stages. Differences in both larval crowding and host plant availability during development resulted in significant changes in the expression of genes involved in development, reproduction and metabolism, particularly at the instar V larval stage. In summary, our results offer novel insights into how environmental cues affect expression profiles in migratory insects and highlight candidate genes that may underpin the migratory syndrome in the painted lady butterfly.

Abstract:Declines in the abundance and diversity of insects pose a substantial threat to terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Yet, identifying the causes of these declines has proved difficult, even for well-studied species like monarch butterflies, whose eastern North American population has decreased markedly over the last three decades. Three hypotheses have been proposed to explain the changes observed in the eastern monarch population: loss of milkweed host plants from increased herbicide use, mortality during autumn migration and/or early-winter resettlement and changes in breeding-season climate. Here, we use a hierarchical modelling approach, combining data from >18,000 systematic surveys to evaluate support for each of these hypotheses over a 25-yr period. Between 2004 and 2018, breeding-season weather was nearly seven times more important than other factors in explaining variation in summer population size, which was positively associated with the size of the subsequent overwintering population. Although data limitations prevent definitive evaluation of the factors governing population size between 1994 and 2003 (the period of the steepest monarch decline coinciding with a widespread increase in herbicide use), breeding-season weather was similarly identified as an important driver of monarch population size. If observed changes in spring and summer climate continue, portions of the current breeding range may become inhospitable for monarchs. Our results highlight the increasingly important contribution of a changing climate to insect declines.

Abstract:Temporal changes in population densities and species richness of three main pollinator groups—moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera); bees, wasps and sawflies (Hymenoptera); and hoverflies, horseflies, tachinids and bee flies (Diptera)—were investigated in the Carpathian Basin. Maintaining pollinator diversity is a crucial factor for preserving our biodiversity and ecosystems; furthermore, several pollinator species have a strong economic role in maintaining crop and fruit cultures. Our conclusions are based on our three and four decades of faunistic surveys in various regions of the Carpathian Basin. Analyzing and comparing our data with the historical data of the last 50 years, we concluded that densities of some pollinators declined during the past decade and a half (Symphyta, hoverflies), although populations of several species of Mediterranean origin grew (Aculeata) and new species even migrated from the warmer regions. In numerous cases, this decrease was dramatic: more than 90% decline of certain butterfly species were detected. On the other hand, the composition of pollinator fauna significantly changed due to the disappearance of some mountainous or mesophile species. The main reason for the decrease in pollinator communities is due partly to climatic change and partly to anthropogenic factors. Different groups of pollinators react differently: some groups like Syrphidae, Tachinidae, most of the butterfly families and bumblebees suffered a strong decline in the last two decades; other warm-loving groups like most of Aculeata and horseflies and bee flies showed a significant increase in population densities. Our conclusion: in our region, the pollinator crisis is present but moderate; however, there is a clear sign of the gradual transition of our pollinator fauna towards the Mediterranean type.

Cultural significance of Lepidoptera in sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract:Background: The taxon Lepidoptera is one of the most widespread and recognisable insect orders with 160,000 species worldwide and with more than 20,000 species in Africa. Lepidoptera have a complete metamorphosis and the adults (butterflies and moths) are quite different from the larvae (caterpillars). The purpose of the study was to make an overview of how butterflies/moths and caterpillars are utilised, perceived and experienced in daily life across sub-Saharan Africa. Method: Ethno-entomological information on Lepidoptera in sub-Saharan Africa was collected by (1) interviews with more than 300 people from about 120 ethnic groups in 27 countries in the region; and (2) library studies in Africa, London, Paris and Leiden. Results: Often the interviewees indicated that people from his or her family or ethnic group did not know that caterpillars turn into butterflies and moths (metamorphosis). When known, metamorphosis may be used as a symbol for transformation, such as in female puberty or in literature regarding societal change. Vernacular names of the butterfly/moth in the Muslim world relate to religion or religious leaders. The names of the caterpillars often refer to the host plant or to their characteristics or appearance. Close to 100 caterpillar species are consumed as food. Wild silkworm species, such as Borocera spp. in Madagascar and Anaphe species in the rest of Africa, provide expensive textiles. Bagworms (Psychidae) are sometimes used as medicine. Ancestors may be associated with certain dark nocturnal moths, but these are also considered to be responsible for armyworms plagues. The appearance of butterflies/moths can be associated with seasons or serve as predictor of events. There are many proverbs, songs and stories related to butterflies and moths. Lepidoptera are also an inspiration in art expressions. In dance, the movements of caterpillars are used as examples, while certain cocoons are used as rattles. Conclusion: Lepidoptera are found very appealing because of the striking appearance of the adults, their dramatic metamorphosis and the provision of silk and nutritious food. Besides, they are an inspiration in art and literature.
Butterfly pollination in Platycoryne (Orchidaceae): evidence for a key pollinator shift in the large Habenaria clade

Abstract:Shifts between pollinator functional groups can explain major changes in floral phenotype. I document a novel case of butterfly pollination in Platycoryne, an African genus that is phylogenetically embedded in the very large Habenaria clade in the Orchidaceae. Most Habenaria species have green or white flowers and many of these have been shown to be pollinated by moths, but my observations of the orange-flowered species Platycorynus mediocris in south-central Africa showed that it is pollinated diurnally by butterflies. The nectar-producing spurs of this species are c. 15 mm in length and closely match the tongue lengths of nymphalid and pierid butterflies that visit the flowers. The rostellum arms flank the spur entrance and place sickle-shaped pollinaria on the eyes or palps of the butterflies. In contrast to the highly scented flowers of moth-pollinated Habenaria species, the flowers of P. mediocris emit very little scent. Anecdotal observations indicate that several other Platycoryne species with orange flowers are also pollinated by butterflies. I conclude that the flower colouration (orange without UV reflectance) and low emission of scent in P. mediocris reflect an important historical shift to butterfly pollination in African members of the Habenaria clade.

Abstract:A compilation of > 135,000 monarch observations between 1993‐2018 from the North American Butterfly Association's annual butterfly count revealed declines at some sites, particularly the US Northeast and parts of the Midwest, while numbers in other areas, notably the US Southeast and Northwest, were unchanged or increasing, yielding a slightly positive overall trend across the species range. Negative impacts of agricultural glyphosate use appeared to be counterbalanced by positive effects of annual temperature, particularly in the US Midwest. We suggest that density‐dependent reproductive compensation when lower numbers arrive each spring is currently able to maintain relatively stable breeding monarch numbers. Many insects are in clear decline, with monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) drawing particular attention as a flagship species. It is well documented that, among migratory populations, numbers of overwintering monarchs have been falling across several decades, but trends among breeding monarchs are less clear. Here, we compile >135,000 monarch observations between 1993 and 2018 from the North American Butterfly Association's annual butterfly count to examine spatiotemporal patterns and potential drivers of adult monarch relative abundance trends across the entire breeding range in eastern and western North America. While the data revealed declines at some sites, particularly the US Northeast and parts of the Midwest, numbers in other areas, notably the US Southeast and Northwest, were unchanged or increasing, yielding a slightly positive overall trend across the species range. Negative impacts of agricultural glyphosate use appeared to be counterbalanced by positive effects of annual temperature, particularly in the US Midwest. Overall, our results suggest that population growth in summer is compensating for losses during the winter and that changing environmental variables have offsetting effects on mortality and/or reproduction. We suggest that density‐dependent reproductive compensation when lower numbers arrive each spring is currently able to maintain relatively stable breeding monarch numbers. However, we caution against complacency since accelerating climate change may bring growing threats. In addition, increases of summer monarchs in some regions, especially in California and in the south, may reflect replacement of migratory with resident populations. Nonetheless, it is perhaps reassuring that ubiquitous downward trends in summer monarch abundance are not evident.

Abstract:Mounting evidence shows overall insect abundances are in decline globally. Habitat loss, climate change, and pesticides have all been implicated, but their relative effects have never been evaluated in a comprehensive large-scale study. We harmonized 17 years of land use, climate, multiple classes of pesticides, and butterfly survey data across 81 counties in five states in the US Midwest. We find community-wide declines in total butterfly abundance and species richness to be most strongly associated with pesticides in general, and for butterflies species richness the use of neonicotinoid-treated seeds in particular. This included the abundance of the migratory monarch ( ), whose decline is the focus of intensive debate and public concern. Insect declines cannot be understood without comprehensive data on all putative drivers, and the 2015 cessation of neonicotinoid data releases in the US will impede future research.

Abstract:The geographical exchange of non-native species can be highly asymmetrical, with some world regions donating or receiving more species than others. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain such asymmetries, including differences in propagule pressure, source species (invader) pools, environmental features in recipient regions, or biological traits of invaders. We quantified spatiotemporal patterns in the exchange of non-native insects between Europe, North America, and Australasia, and then tested possible explanations for these patterns based on regional trade (import values) and model estimates of invader pool sizes. Europe was the dominant donor of non-native insect species between the three regions, with most of this asymmetry arising prior to 1950. This could not be explained by differences in import values (1827–2014), nor were there substantial differences in the sizes of modelled invader pools. Based on additional evidence from literature, we propose that patterns of historical plant introductions may explain these asymmetries, but this possibility requires further study.
