Abstract:In complex materials observed electronic phases and transitions between them often involve coupling between many degrees of freedom whose entanglement convolutes understanding of the instigating mechanism. Metal-insulator transitions are one such problem where coupling to the structural, orbital, charge and magnetic order parameters frequently obscures the underlying physics. Here, we demonstrate a way to unravel this conundrum by heterostructuring a prototypical multi-ordered complex oxide NdNiO 3 in ultra thin geometry, which preserves the metal-to-insulator transition and bulk-like magnetic order parameter, but entirely suppresses the symmetry lowering and long-range charge order parameter. These findings illustrate the utility of heterointerfaces as a powerful method for removing competing order parameters to gain greater insight into the nature of the transition, here revealing that the magnetic order generates the transition independently, leading to an exceptionally rare purely electronic metal-insulator transition with no symmetry change.

Abstract:We show that, in the presence of a deformable lattice potential, the nature of the disorder-driven metal-insulator transition is fundamentally changed with respect to the noninteracting (Anderson) scenario. For strong disorder, even a modest electron-phonon interaction is found to dramatically renormalize the random potential, opening a mobility gap at the Fermi energy. This process, which reflects disorder-enhanced polaron formation, is here given a microscopic basis by treating the lattice deformations and Anderson localization effects on the same footing. We identify an intermediate "bad insulator" transport regime which displays resistivity values exceeding the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit and with a negative temperature coefficient, as often observed in strongly disordered metals. Our calculations reveal that this behavior originates from significant temperature-induced rearrangements of electronic states due to enhanced interaction effects close to the disorder-driven metal-insulator transition.

Abstract:Motivated by the structure of networks of cross-linked cytoskeletal biopolymers, we study the orientationally ordered phases in two-dimensional networks of randomly cross-linked semiflexible polymers. We consider permanent cross-links which prescribe a finite angle and treat them as quenched disorder in a semi-microscopic replica field theory. Starting from a fluid of un-cross-linked polymers and small polymer clusters (sol) and increasing the cross-link density, a continuous gelation transition occurs. In the resulting gel, the semiflexible chains either display long range orientational order or are frozen in random directions depending on the value of the crossing angle, the crosslink concentration and the stiffness of the polymers. A crossing angle $\theta\sim 2\pi/M$ leads to long range $M$-fold orientational order, e.g., "hexatic" or "tetratic" for $\theta=60^{\circ}$ or $90^{\circ}$, respectively. The transition is discontinuous and the critical cross-link density depends on the bending stiffness of the polymers and the cross-link geometry: the higher the stiffness and the lower $M$, the lower the critical number of cross-links. In between the sol and the long range ordered state, we always observe a gel which is a statistically isotropic amorphous solid (SIAS) with random positional and random orientational localization of the participating polymers.

Abstract:We consider directed polymers in 1+1 spatial dimension under action of an external repulsive potential along a line. Using the exact mapping onto imaginary time evolution of free fermions we find that for sufficiently strong potential the system of polymers undergoes a continuous configurational phase transition. The transition corresponds to merging empty regions in the dominant limit shape.

Topological diffusive metal in amorphous transition metal monosilicides

Abstract:In chiral crystals crystalline symmetries can protect multifold fermions, pseudorelativistic masless quasiparticles that have no high-energy counterparts. Their realization in transition metal monosilicides has exemplified their intriguing physical properties, such as long Fermi arc surface states and unusual optical responses. Recent experimental studies on amorphous transition metal monosilicides suggest that topological properties may survive beyond crystals, even though theoretical evidence is lacking. Motivated by these findings, we theoretically study a tight-binding model of amorphous transition metal monosilicides. We find that topological properties of multifold fermions survive in the presence of structural disorder that converts the semimetal into a diffusive metal. We characterize this topological diffusive metal phase with the spectral localizer, a real-space topological indicator that we show can signal multifold fermions. Connecting polymers to the quantum Hall plateau transition

Abstract:A mapping is developed between the quantum Hall plateau transition and two-dimensional self-interacting lattice polymers. This mapping is exact in the classical percolation limit of the plateau transition, and diffusive behavior at the critical energy is shown to be related to the critical exponents of a class of chiral polymers at the θ point. The exact critical exponents of the chiral polymer model on the honeycomb lattice are found, verifying that this model is in the same universality class as a previously solved model of polymers on the Manhattan lattice. The mapping is obtained by averaging analytically over the local random potentials in a previously studied lattice model for the classical plateau transition. This average generates a weight on chiral polymers associated with the classical localization length exponent ν=43. We discuss the differences between the classical and quantum transitions in the context of polymer models and use numerical results on higher-moment scaling laws at the quantum transition to constrain possible polymer descriptions. Some properties of the polymer models are verified by transfer matrix and Monte Carlo studies.

Abstract:We study the electronic structure of an ordered array of poly(para-phenylene) chains produced by surface-catalyzed dehalogenative polymerization of 1,4-dibromobenzene on copper (110). The quantization of unoccupied molecular states is measured as a function of oligomer length by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, with Fermi level crossings observed for chains longer than ten phenyl rings. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a graphene-like quasi one-dimensional valence band as well as a direct gap of 1.15 eV, as the conduction band is partially filled through adsorption on the surface. Tight-binding modelling and ab initio density functional theory calculations lead to a full description of the organic band-structure, including the k dispersion, the gap size and electron charge transfer mechanisms which drive the system into metallic behaviour. Therefore the entire band structure of a carbon-based conducting wire has been fully determined. This may be taken as a fingerprint of {\pi}-conjugation of surface organic frameworks.

Anisotropic Random Networks of Semiflexible Polymers

Abstract:Motivated by the organization of crosslinked cytoskeletal biopolymers, we present a semimicroscopic replica field theory for the formation of anisotropic random networks of semiflexible polymers. The networks are formed by introducing random permanent crosslinks which fix the orientations of the corresponding polymer segments to align with one another. Upon increasing the crosslink density, we obtain a continuous gelation transition from a fluid phase to a gel where a finite fraction of the system gets localized at random positions. For sufficiently stiff polymers, this positional localization is accompanied by a {\em continuous} isotropic-to-nematic (IN) transition occuring at the same crosslink density. As the polymer stiffness decreases, the IN transition becomes first order, shifts to a higher crosslink density, and is preceeded by an orientational glass (statistically isotropic amorphous solid) where the average polymer orientations freeze in random directions.

Hopping Conductivity of a Nearly-1d Fractal: a Model for Conducting Polymers

Abstract:We suggest treating a conducting network of oriented polymer chains as an anisotropic fractal whose dimensionality D=1+\epsilon is close to one. Percolation on such a fractal is studied within the real space renormalization group of Migdal and Kadanoff. We find that the threshold value and all the critical exponents are strongly nonanalytic functions of \epsilon as \epsilon tends to zero, e.g., the critical exponent of conductivity is \epsilon^{-2}\exp (-1-1/\epsilon). The distribution function for conductivity of finite samples at the percolation threshold is established. It is shown that the central body of the distribution is given by a universal scaling function and only the low-conductivity tail of distribution remains $\epsilon $-dependent. Variable range hopping conductivity in the polymer network is studied: both DC conductivity and AC conductivity in the multiple hopping regime are found to obey a quasi-1d Mott law. The present results are consistent with electrical properties of poorly conducting polymers.

Phase Diagram of Flexible Polymers with Quenched Disordered Charged Monomers

Abstract:Recent advances in Generalized Ensemble simulations and microcanonical analysis allowed the investigation of structural transitions in polymer models over a broad range of local bending and torsion strengths. It is reasonable to argue that electrostatic interactions play a significant role in stabilizing and mediating structural transitions in polymers. We propose a bead-spring polymer model with randomly distributed charged monomers interacting via a screened Coulomb potential. By combining the Replica Exchange Wang-Landau (REWL) method with energy-dependent monomer updates, we constructed the hyperphase diagram as a function of temperature ($T$) and charged monomer concentration ($\eta$). The coil-globule and globular-solid transitions are respectively second and first order for the entire concentration range. However, above a concentration threshold of $\eta=80\%$, electrostatic repulsion hinders the formation of solid and liquid globules, and the interplay between enthalpic and entropic interactions leads to the formation of liquid pearl-necklace ad solid helical structures. The probability distribution, $P(E,T)$, indicates that at high $\eta$, the pearl-necklace liquid phase freezes into a stable solid helix-like structure with a free energy barrier higher than the freezing globule transition at low $\eta$.

Abstract:The structural transformation in the coil-globule transition of a single flexible lattice chain has been investigated using dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. The results based upon ensemble averaging illustrated that for the homopolymers with limited chain length, an intermediate state with a dense-core and molten-shell structure reversibly occurs in the transition region. It was attributed to a special microphase separation behavior in an isolated coil, performing with densifying the dense core and contracting the thin shell. The continuous appearance of the size transition and its tendency to discontinuity at the theta temperature with the chain length approaching infinity were illustrated by the coexistence curves of the monomers with limited chain length. A possible explanation and its implications to the general mechanism of protein folding are also discussed.
The Ising model in swollen vs. compact polymers: Mean-field approach and computer simulations

Abstract:We study the properties of the classical Ising model with nearest-neighbor interaction for spins located at the monomers of long polymer chains in 2 and 3 dimensions. We compare results for two ensembles of polymers with very different single chain properties: 1) swollen, self-avoiding linear polymer chains in good solvent conditions and 2) compact, space-filling randomly branching polymers in melt. By employing a mean-field approach and Monte Carlo computer simulations, we show that swollen polymers cannot sustain an ordered phase. On the contrary, compact polymers may indeed produce an observable phase transition. Finally, we briefly consider the statistical properties of the ordered phase by comparing polymer chains within the same universality class but characterized by very different shapes.
Simulating the collapse transition of a two-dimensional semiflexible lattice polymer

Abstract:It has been revealed by mean-field theories and computer simulations that the nature of the collapse transition of a polymer is influenced by its bending stiffness $\epsilon_{\rm b}$. In two dimensions, a recent analytical work demonstrated that the collapse transition of a partially directed lattice polymer is always first-order as long as $\epsilon_{\rm b}$ is positive [H. Zhou {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 158302 (2006)]. Here we employ Monte Carlo simulation to investigate systematically the effect of bending stiffness on the static properties of a 2D lattice polymer. The system's phase-diagram at zero force is obtained. Depending on $\epsilon_{\rm b}$ and the temperature $T$, the polymer can be in one of three phases: crystal, disordered globule, or swollen coil. The crystal-globule transition is discontinuous, the globule-coil transition is continuous. At moderate or high values of $\epsilon_{\rm b}$ the intermediate globular phase disappears and the polymer has only a discontinuous crystal-coil transition. When an external force is applied, the force-induced collapse transition will either be continuous or discontinuous, depending on whether the polymer is originally in the globular or the crystal phase at zero force. The simulation results also demonstrate an interesting scaling behavior of the polymer at the force-induced globule-coil transition.

Abstract:In the absence of magnetic field or spin‐orbit coupling the one‐parameter scaling theory predicts localization of all states in two‐dimensional (2D) disordered systems, for any amount of disorder. However, a 2D metallic phase has been recently reported in high mobility Si‐MOS and GaAs‐based materials without magnetic field. We study numerically a recently proposed 2D model which consists of a compactly coupled pure‐random plane structure. This allows to obtain exactly a continuum of one‐dimensional ballistic extended states which can lead to a marginal metallic phase of finite conductivity σ0 = 2e2/h, in a wide energy range whose boundaries define the mobility edges of a first‐order metal‐insulator transition. We present numerical diagonalization results and the conductivity of the system in perpendicular magnetic field, which verify the above analytical predictions. The model is also discussed in connection to recent experiments.
Polymeric nematics of associating rods: phase behavior, chiral propagation and elasticity

Abstract:Rod-shaped colloids with attractive tips can form linear aggregates that may subsequently undergo hierarchical self-assembly into nematic fluids. Inspired by recent modelling efforts on chromonic liquid crystals, composed of discotic building blocks, we formulate a second-virial theory for reversible supramolecular rods. Unlike chromonics, these systems are capable of forming stable nematic phases in the high-temperature, monomeric limit in the absence of polymerization. Changing the tip potential from attractive to repulsive thus enables a smooth crossover from a monomeric to a polymeric nematic fluid. We analyze the isotropic-nematic phase behavior for both regimes and address the nematic elastic properties. The theory accounts for the molecular flexibility and chirality of the filaments and respects the intrinsic chain-length dependence of nematic order. We also discuss the impact of polymerization inhibitors on the phase behavior in the polymeric regime and find that the inhibitors cause a marked narrowing of the isotropic-nematic biphasic region, and generate reentrance nematization as well as a mass density inversion of the coexisting phases. We finally discuss the elastic moduli of rod-based polymeric nematics by qualitative comparing their elastic anisotropies with those of chromonic liquid crystals and other nanoparticle-based nematics.

Abstract:We study electronic diffusion in quasi-one-dimensional systems with randomly placed interchain single and double bond cross-links corresponding to one and two adjacent interchain hoppings, respectively. While in the single bond case all states are localized, for the double bond case many completely unscattered states are obtained forming a ''dilute'' conducting band which leads to superdiffusive wave packet dynamics. This new type of band structure can explain the unusual transport properties of highly conducting polymers.
Metal-insulator transition in disordered systems from the one-body density matrix

Abstract:The insulating state of matter can be probed by means of a ground state geometrical marker, which is closely related to the modern theory of polarization (based on a Berry phase). In the present work we show that this marker can be applied to determine the metal-insulator transition in disordered systems. In particular, for non-interacting systems the geometrical marker can be obtained from the configurational average of the norm-squared one-body density matrix, which can be calculated within open as well as periodic boundary conditions. This is in sharp contrast to a classification based on the static conductivity, which is only sensible within periodic boundary conditions. We exemplify the method by considering a simple lattice model, known to have a metal-insulator transition as a function of the disorder strength and demonstrate that the transition point can be obtained accurately from the one-body density matrix. The approach has a general {\it ab-initio} formulation and can be applied to realistic disordered materials by standard electronic structure methods.

Abstract:We propose a model to investigate the magnetic behavior in the ferromagnetic polymer chain. Namely, the polymer consists of alternating single and double bonds, with Coulomb (Hubbard) intra-site interaction. Each repeat unit is further attached to a magnetic functional group, where the magnetic coupling between on-chain spin-polarized itinerant charges and localized magnetic moments of the size group is included. We found that dimerization opens a band gap in the polymers and is closely related to magnetism. Besides, the weakly linked magnetic functional groups can simultaneously increase the initially weak Coulomb interaction and the magnetic coupling to create significant magnetism in such ferromagnetic polymers. However, the strongly linked magnetic functional groups for creating ferromagnetic polymers can provide robust orbital coupling and produce significant orbital splits, but weak ferromagnetism of low-spin states appears. Moreover, choosing the light magnetic functional groups to link polymers can make effective dimerization as well as ferromagnetism. Furthermore, adding hole density to the polymers for increasing mobility does not have the same effect on rising Curie temperatures. Instead, a maximum Curie temperature appears on a specific hole density.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are promising material candidates for many future applications in flexible displays, organic circuits, and sensors. Their performance is strongly affected by their structural conformation including both electrical and optical anisotropy. Particularly for thin layers or close to crucial interfaces, there are few methods to track their organization and functional behaviors. Here we present a platform based on plasmonic nanogaps that can assess the chemical structure and orientation of conjugated polymers down to sub-10 nm thickness using light. We focus on a representative conjugated polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), of varying thickness (2-20 nm) while it undergoes redox in situ. This allows dynamic switching of the plasmonic gap spacer through a metal-insulator transition. Both dark-field (DF) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra track the optical anisotropy and orientation of polymer chains close to a metallic interface. Moreover, we demonstrate how this influences both optical and redox switching for nanothick PEDOT devices.
