Abstract:I discuss the diffractive production of charmonium from nuclei and the anomalous nuclear attenuation --- termed ``color transparency'' --- attributed to such processes, focusing on the few tens of GeV energy regime germane to the ELFE project. A critical review of color transparency calculations is presented, and the major sources of uncertainty are emphasized.

Abstract:Recent results on the hadroproduction of charm and beauty are discussed in the context of the current theoretical and experimental status. The areas covered include production of open charm and beauty particles and charm and beauty quarkonia. Experimental results from both fixed target and colliding beam experiments are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. Predictions based on QCD perturbation theory are generally successful in explaining the shapes of differential cross sections but underestimate the scale of the cross section by factors of 2-3. An exception is production of the vector meson quarkonia which cannot be satisfactorily explained by perturbative processes alone.

Coherent photo- and electroproduction of charmonia on nuclear targets revisited: Green function formalism

Abstract:We study for the first time the production of charmonia in nuclear ultraperipheral and electron-ion collisions based on a rigorous Green function formalism. Such formalism allows to incorporate properly formation effects (color transparency), as well as the quantum coherence inherent in higher-twist shadowing corrections related to the |QQ ̄⟩ Fock component of the photon. The leading twist gluon shadowing associated with multigluon photon fluctuations is also included within the same formalism. The later effect represents the dominant source of shadowing at midrapidities in the LHC kinematic region, while the reduced effect of quark shadowing leads to a significant modification of differential cross sections dσ/dy at forward and/or backwards rapidities. Model calculations for dσ/dy are in a good agreement with available ultraperipheral nuclear Pb−Pb collisions data on coherent charmonium production at RHIC and the LHC. Abstract:We study the effect of thermal charm production on charmonium regeneration in high energy nuclear collisions. By solving the kinetic equations for charm quark and charmonium distributions in Pb+Pb collisions, we calculate the global and differential nuclear modification factors RAA(Npart) and RAA(pt) for J/ψ s. Due to the thermal charm production in hot medium, the charmonium production source changes from the initially created charm quarks at SPS, RHIC and LHC to the thermally produced charm quarks at Future Circular Collider (FCC), and the J/ψ suppression (RAA<1) observed so far will be replaced by a strong enhancement (RAA>1) at FCC at low transverse momentum.

Abstract:This invited summary gives some concluding remarks regarding theoretical aspects of the research presented at Charm2010. I will specialize to the role of theory and the relative reach of theory and experiment in three of the major areas of charm physics address at this conference, specifically 1) charm production, 2) charm weak decays, and 3) charm hadron spectroscopy. After a discussion of the status of progress on representative topics in each of these areas I will conclude with a previously unrelated Feynman story from a conference in the early days of charm.
Multi-charmed and singled charmed hadrons from coalescence: yields and ratios in different collision systems at LHC

Abstract:We study the production of charmed and multi-charmed hadrons in ultra-relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions coupling the transport approach for charm dynamics in the medium to an hybrid hadronization model of coalescence plus fragmentation. In this paper, we mainly discuss the particle yields for single charmed and multi-charmed baryons focusing mainly on the production of and . We provide first predictions for PbPb collision in centrality class and then we explore the system size dependence through KrKr , to ArAr and OO collisions, planned within the ALICE3 experiment. In these cases, a monotonic behavior for the yields emerges which can be tested in future experimental data. We found about three order of magnitude increase in the production of in PbPb collisions compared with the yield in small collision systems like OO collisions. Furthermore, we investigate the effects on the particle yield and spectra coming from the modification of the charm quark distribution due to the different size of the collision systems also comparing it to the case of thermalized charm distributions. These results suggest that observation on the spectra and their evolution across system size can give novel information about the partial thermalization of the charm quark distribution as well as to its wave function width. Furthermore, we find that the / ratio is an observable more sensitive with respect to / , this ratio is predicted to span over two order of magnitude from large to small systems.

Sub-threshold charm production in nuclear collisions

Abstract:We present the first predictions for sub-threshold open charm and charmonium production in nuclear collisions. The production mechanism is driven by multistep scatterings of nucleons and their resonance states, accumulating sufficient energy for the production of J/Ψ, Λc+D¯, and D+D¯. Our results are of particular importance for the CBM experiment at FAIR, as they indicate that already at the SIS100 accelerator one can expect a significant number of charmed hadrons to be produced. This opens new possibilities to explore charm dynamics and the formation of charmed nuclei.

Abstract:In this paper, we have investigated the importance of quark charm in nuclear structure functions in the color dipole model at small $x$. The charm structure function per nucleon $F_{2}^{cA}/A$ for light and heavy nuclei in a wide range of transverse separations $\mathrm{r}$ with renormalization and factorization scales are considered. Bounds on the ratio $F^{cA}_{2}/AF^{A}_{2}$ for nuclei are well described with respect to the electron-ion future colliders kinematic range, i.e, EIC and EIcC colliders.

Abstract:Over the past ∼10 years, the topic of the nucleon’s nonperturbative or intrinsic charm (IC) content has enjoyed something of a renaissance, largely motivated by theoretical developments involving quark modelers and PDF-fitters. In this talk I will briefly describe the importance of intrinsic charm to various issues in high-energy phenomenology, and survey recent progress in constraining its overall normalization and contribution to the momentum sum rule of the nucleon. I end with the conclusion that progress on the side of calculation has now placed the onus on experiment to unambiguously resolve the proton’s intrinsic charm component.

Abstract:We investigate with a transport approach the cold and hot nuclear matter effects on the charmonium transverse momentum distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The newly defined nuclear modification factor r(AA) = < p(T)(2)>(AA)/< p(T)(2)>(pp) and elliptic flow v(2) for J/psi are sensitive to the nature of the hot medium and the thermalization of heavy quarks. From Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) through Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) colliding energies, we observe dramatic changes in the centrality dependence of r(AA). We find that, at LHC energy, the finally observed charmonia are dominated by the regeneration from thermalized heavy quarks.

Abstract:Nuclear suppression of charmonium production in proton-nucleus interactions is poorly understood, what restrains our attempts to single out unusual effects in heavy ion collisions. We develop a phenomenological approach, based on the light-cone dynamics of charmonium production, which has much in common with deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. The key observation is the existence of a soft mechanism of heavy flavour production, which scales in the quark mass and dominates shadowing corrections and diffraction. It naturally explains the surprisingly strong nuclear suppression of J/Psi at large Feynman-x_F. The low-x_F region is subject to a complicated interplay of hard and soft mechanisms. With evaluated parameters we nicely describe available data on charmonium production in proton-nucleus collisions. Using these results we predict a new process, diffractive production of charmonium on a nucleon target, which fraction in the total production rate of charmonium is evaluated at 12%.
Charmonium production in high multiplicity p p collisions and the structure of the proton

Abstract:In this work we study charmonium production in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions. We investigate the role of the spatial distribution of partons in the protons and assume that the proton has a Y shape. In this configuration quarks are more at the surface and gluons in the inner part of the proton. Going from peripheral to more central and then to ultra-central proton-proton collisions, we go from quark-quark collisions to gluon-gluon collisions. Since gluons are much more abundant, the cross sections grow. In the case of charm production this growth is enhanced by the fact that, $\sigma( g + g \to c + \bar{c}) >> \sigma( q + \bar{q} \to c + \bar{c})$. These effects can explain the growth seen in the data.

Charmonia Production in Hot QCD Matter and Electromagnetic Fields

Abstract:Both hot QCD matter and extremely strong electromagnetic fields are generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We employ the transport model and the equivalent photon approximation (EPA) to study charmonium hadroproduction and photoproduction in nucleus-nucleus collisions, respectively. In photoproduction, quasi-real photons may interact with the whole nucleus or individual nucleons, which is called the coherent and incoherent processes, respectively. The typical momentum of charmonium produced in two processes is located in $p_T\lesssim 1/R_A$ and $p_T\lesssim 1/R_N$, where $R_A$ and $R_N$ are the radii of nucleus and the nucleon. Both kinds of photoproduction and also hadroproduction are considered to calculate charmonium production in different transverse momentum bins, rapidity bins, and collision centralities, incorporating modifications from hot QCD matter and initial cold nuclear matter effects. Our calculations explain experimental data about charmonium nuclear modification factors and the production cross-section in ultra-peripheral collisions. Charmonium nuclear modification is far above the unit at extremely low $p_T$ ($p_T < 0.1$ GeV/c) in peripheral collisions with centrality 70-90\%, attributed to coherent photoproduction.

Abstract:We present a fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of charm-quark production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering, with full charm-quark mass dependence. The next-to-next-to-leading order corrections in perturbative quantum chromodynamics are found to be comparable in size to the next-to-leading order corrections in certain kinematic regions. We compare our predictions with data on dimuon production in (anti)neutrino scattering from a heavy nucleus. Our results can be used to improve the extraction of the parton distribution function of a strange quark in the nucleon.

Abstract:Due to larger mass and earlier production, heavy quark(quarkonium) can be sensitive probes to investigate the fast decaying electromagnetic and vortical fields produced in heavy-ion collisions. The non-relativistic Schroedinger-like equation for heavy quarks under strong electromagnetic fields in the rotating frame is deduced and used to construct the two-body equation for the charmonium system. The effective potential between charm and anti-charm becomes anisotropic in electromagnetic and vortical fields, especially along the direction of the Lorentz force. The vorticity will affect this asymmetry property largely and catalyze the transition from strong interaction dominant bound state to electromagnetic and vortical interaction controlled anisotropic bound state. It is possible to be realized in high-energy nuclear collisions.
