Abstract:We construct Langevin equations describing the fluctuations of the tensor order parameter Q(alphabeta) in nematic liquid crystals by adding noise terms to time-dependent variational equations that follow from the Ginzburg-Landau-de Gennes free energy. The noise is required to preserve the symmetry and tracelessness of the tensor order parameter and must satisfy a fluctuation-dissipation relation at thermal equilibrium. We construct a noise with these properties in a basis of symmetric traceless matrices and show that the Langevin equations can be solved numerically in this basis using a stochastic version of the method of lines. The numerical method is validated by comparing equilibrium probability distributions, structure factors, and dynamic correlations obtained from these numerical solutions with analytic predictions. We demonstrate excellent agreement between numerics and theory. This methodology can be applied to the study of phenomena where fluctuations in both the magnitude and direction of nematic order are important, as for instance, in the nematic swarms which produce enhanced opalescence near the isotropic-nematic transition or the problem of nucleation of the nematic from the isotropic phase.

Abstract:Nematic liquid crystals are well modeled as a fluid of rigid rods. Starting from this model, we use a Poisson-bracket formalism to derive the equations governing the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals. We treat the spin angular momentum density arising from the rotation of constituent molecules about their centers of mass as an independent field and derive equations for it, the mass density, the momentum density, and the nematic director. Our equations reduce to the original Leslie-Ericksen equations, including the inertial director term that is neglected in the hydrodynamic limit, only when the moment of inertia for angular momentum parallel to the director vanishes and when a dissipative coefficient favoring locking of the angular frequencies of director rotation and spin angular momentum diverges. Our equations reduce to the equations of nematohydrodynamics in the hydrodynamic limit but with dissipative coefficients that depend on the coefficient that must diverge to produce the Leslie-Ericksen equations.

Fluctuating Interfaces in Liquid Crystals

Abstract:We review and compare recent work on the properties of fluctuating interfaces between nematic and isotropic liquid-crystalline phases. Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out for systems of ellipsoids and hard rods with aspect ratio 15:1, and the fluctuation spectrum of interface positions (the capillary wave spectrum) has been analyzed. In addition, the capillary wave spectrum has been calculated analytically within the Landau-de Gennes theory. The theory predicts that the interfacial fluctuations can be described in terms of a wave vector dependent interfacial tension, which is anisotropic at small wavelengths (stiff director regime) and becomes isotropic at large wavelengths (flexible director regime). After determining the elastic constants in the nematic phase, theory and simulation can be compared quantitatively. We obtain good agreement for the stiff director regime. The crossover to the flexible director regime is expected at wavelengths of the order of several thousand particle diameters, which was not accessible to our simulations.

On a non-isothermal model for nematic liquid crystals

Abstract:A model describing the evolution of a liquid crystal substance in the nematic phase is investigated in terms of three basic state variables: the {\it absolute temperature} $\teta$, the {\it velocity field} $\ub$, and the {\it director field} $\bd$, representing preferred orientation of molecules in a neighborhood of any point of a reference domain. The time evolution of the velocity field is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a non-isotropic stress tensor depending on the gradients of the velocity and of the director field $\bd$, where the transport (viscosity) coefficients vary with temperature. The dynamics of $\bd$ is described by means of a parabolic equation of Ginzburg-Landau type, with a suitable penalization term to relax the constraint $|\bd | = 1$. The system is supplemented by a heat equation, where the heat flux is given by a variant of Fourier's law, depending also on the director field $\bd$. The proposed model is shown compatible with \emph{First and Second laws} of thermodynamics, and the existence of global-in-time weak solutions for the resulting PDE system is established, without any essential restriction on the size of the data.

Abstract:The research herein studies the Langevin dynamics allowing for an exchange of energy between liquid crystals and the thermal environment. This dynamics leads to fluctuation and dissipation behaviors in the motions of liquid crystals, and therefore drives the system toward non-equilibrium evolutional processes. In particular, for the operations of liquid-crystal metastable systems, the fluctuation could allow an excitation (non-equilibrium) transition against energy barriers to the globally-stable state. Implemented with an actual case of liquid crystal pi configuration, this work statistically studies the non-equilibrium metastable transitions and shows the dependence of the transition-time on the correlations (of fluctuations).

Abstract:The orientation fluctuations of the director of a liquid crystal are measured, by a sensitive polarization interferometer, close to the Fréedericksz transition, which is a second order transition driven by an electric field. Using mean field theory, we define the work injected into the system by a change of the electric field and we calibrate it using Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem. We show that the work fluctuations satisfy the Transient Fluctuation Theorem. An analytical justification of this result is given. The open problems for the out of equilibrium case are finally discussed.

Abstract:Spatial optical solitons can be observed in bulk nematic-liquid-crystal cells with an entrance window and a bias voltage applied over the cell to enhance the optical nonlinear effect of laser-induced molecular reorientation. The soliton-induced waveguide is observed in transmission by use of a second light source and crossed polarizers. This setup allows us to investigate the time dependence of the molecular reorientation that sustains the soliton-like beam propagation. Results from a numerical simulation are in good agreement with the experimental results, which confirms the validity of our model.

Abstract:We investigate dynamic magneto-optic effects in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally we measure the magnetization and the phase difference of the transmitted light when an external magnetic field is applied. As a model we study the coupled dynamics of the magnetization, M, and the director field, n, associated with the liquid crystalline orientational order. We demonstrate that the experimentally studied macroscopic dynamic behavior reveals the importance of a dynamic cross-coupling between M and n. The experimental data are used to extract the value of the dissipative cross-coupling coefficient. We also make concrete predictions about how reversible cross-coupling terms between the magnetization and the director could be detected experimentally by measurements of the transmitted light intensity as well as by analyzing the azimuthal angle of the magnetization and the director out of the plane spanned by the anchoring axis and the external magnetic field. We derive the eigenmodes of the coupled system and study their relaxation rates. We show that in the usual experimental set-up used for measuring the relaxation rates of the splay-bend or twist-bend eigenmodes of a nematic liquid crystal one expects for a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal a mixture of at least two eigenmodes.

Exact and approximate solutions for elastic interactions in a nematic liquid crystal

Abstract:Anisotropic fluids appear in a diverse array of systems, from liquid-crystal displays to bacterial swarms, and are characterized by orientational order. Large colloidal particles immersed in such environments disturb the medium's orientational order, however, resulting in a stored elastic energy within the bulk. As a consequence, multiple immersed bodies interact at equilibrium through fluid-mediated forces and torques, which depend on the bodies' positions, orientations, and shapes. We provide the equilibrium configuration of a model nematic liquid crystal with multiple immersed bodies or inclusions in two-dimensions, as well as the associated body forces, torques, and surface tractions. A complex variables approach is taken which leans on previous work by Crowdy (2020) for describing solutions with multiply-connected domains. Free periods of a complex director field, which correspond to topological defect positioning and net topological charge, are determined numerically to minimize a global stored elastic energy, including a contribution of a weak (finite) anchoring strength on the body surfaces. Finally, a general, analytical description of two-body far-field interactions is provided, along with examples using two cylindrical inclusions of arbitrary position and size, and two triangles of arbitrary position and orientation.

Abstract:We study the low-frequency, long-wavelength dynamics of soft and semi-soft nematic elastomers using two different but related dynamic theories. Our first formulation describes the pure hydrodynamic behavior of nematic elastomers in which the nematic director has relaxed to its equilibrium value in the presence of strain. We find that the sound-modes structure for soft elastomers is identical to that of columnar liquid crystals. Our second formulation generalizes the derivation of the equations of nematohydrodynamics by the Harvard group to nematic elastomers. It treats the director explicitly and describes slow modes beyond the hydrodynamic limit.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of non-isothermal models describing the evolution of nematic liquid crystals and prove their consistency with the fundamental laws of classical Thermodynamics. The resulting system of equations captures all essential features of physically relevant models, in particular, the effect of stretching of the director field is taken into account. In addition, the associated initial-boundary value problem admits global-in-time weak solutions without any essential restrictions on the size of the initial data.

Abstract:We study the long-time behavior of global strong solutions to a hydrodynamic system for nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows driven by two types of external forces in a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$. For arbitrary large regular initial data with the initial density being away from vacuum, we prove the decay of the velocity field for both cases. Furthermore, for the case with asymptotically autonomous external force, we can prove the convergence of the density function and the director vector as time goes to infinity. Estimates on convergence rate are also provided.

Abstract:We investigate nonlinear optical propagation of continuous-wave (CW) beams in bulk nematic liquid crystals. We thoroughly analyze the competing roles of reorientational and thermal nonlinearity with reference to self-focusing/defocusing and, eventually, the formation of nonlinear diffraction-free wavepackets, the so-called spatial optical solitons. To this extent we refer to dye-doped nematic liquid crystals in planar cells excited by a single CW beam in the highly nonlocal limit. To adjust the relative weight between the two nonlinear responses, we employ two distinct wavelengths, inside and outside the absorption band of the dye, respectively. Different concentrations of the dye are considered in order to enhance the thermal effect. The theoretical analysis is complemented by numerical simulations in the highly nonlocal approximation based on a semi-analytic approach. Theoretical results are finally compared to experimental results in the Nematic Liquid Crystals (NLC) 4-trans-4'-n-hexylcyclohexylisothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT) doped with Sudan Blue dye.

Abstract:We consider the Beris-Edwards system modelling incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. This couples a Navier-Stokes system for the fluid velocity with a parabolic reaction-convection-diffusion system for the Q-tensors describing the average orientation of liquid crystal molecules. In this paper, we study the effect that the flow has on the dynamics of the Q-tensors by considering two fundamental aspects: the preservation of the eigenvalue-range and the dynamical emergence of defects in the limit of large Ericksen number.

Abstract:A lattice Boltzmann scheme is presented which recovers the dynamics of nematic and chiral liquid crystals; the method essentially gives solutions to the Qian-Sheng equations for the evolution of the velocity and tensor order-parameter fields. The resulting algorithm is able to include five independent Leslie viscosities, a Landau-deGennes free energy which introduces three or more elastic constants, a temperature dependent order parameter, surface anchoring and viscosity coefficients, flexo-electric and order electricity and chirality. When combined with a solver for the Maxwell equations associated with the electric field, the algorithm is able to provide a full 'device solver' for a liquid crystal display. Coupled lattice Boltzmann schemes are used to capture the evolution of the fast momentum and slow director motions in a computationally efficient way. The method is shown to give results in close agreement with analytical results for a number of validating examples. The use of the method is illustrated through the simulation of the motion of defects in a zenithal bistable liquid crystal device.

Abstract:Liquid crystals establish a nearly unique combination of thermodynamic, hydrodynamic, and topological behavior. This poses a challenge to their theoretical understanding and modeling. The arena where these effects come together is the mesoscopic (micron) scale. It is then important to develop models aimed at capturing this variety of dynamics. We have generalized the particle-based multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD) method to model the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals. Following the Qian-Sheng theory [Phys. Rev. E 58, 7475 (1998)1063-651X10.1103/PhysRevE.58.7475] of nematics, the spatial and temporal variations of the nematic director field and order parameter are described by a tensor order parameter. The key idea is to assign tensorial degrees of freedom to each MPCD particle, whose mesoscopic average is the tensor order parameter. This nematic MPCD method includes backflow effect, velocity-orientation coupling, and thermal fluctuations. We validate the applicability of this method by testing (i) the nematic-isotropic phase transition, (ii) the flow alignment of the director in shear and Poiseuille flows, and (iii) the annihilation dynamics of a pair of line defects. We find excellent agreement with existing literature. We also investigate the flow field around a force dipole in a nematic liquid crystal, which represents the leading-order flow field around a force-free microswimmer. The anisotropy of the medium not only affects the magnitude of velocity field around the force dipole, but can also induce hydrodynamic torques depending on the orientation of dipole axis relative to director field. A force dipole experiences a hydrodynamic torque when the dipole axis is tilted with respect to the far-field director. The direction of hydrodynamic torque is such that the pusher- (or puller-) type force dipole tends to orient along (or perpendicular to) the director field. Our nematic MPCD method can have far-reaching implications not only in modeling of nematic flows, but also to study the motion of colloids and microswimmers immersed in an anisotropic medium.
Computational molecular field theory for nematic liquid crystals

Abstract:Nematic liquid crystals exhibit configurations in which the underlying ordering changes markedly on macroscopic length scales. Such structures include topological defects in the nematic phase and tactoids within nematic-isotropic coexistence. We discuss a computational study of inhomogeneous configurations that is based on a field theory extension of the Maier-Saupe molecular model of a uniaxial, nematic liquid crystal. A tensor order parameter is defined as the second moment of an orientational probability distribution, leading to a free energy that is not convex within the isotropic-nematic coexistence region, and that goes to infinity if the eigenvalues of the order parameter become nonphysical. Computations of the spatial profile of the order parameter are presented for an isotropic-nematic interface in one dimension, a tactoid in two dimensions, and a nematic disclination in two dimensions. We compare our results to those given by the Landau-de Gennes free energy for the same configurations and discuss the advantages of such a model over the latter.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a simplified Ericksen--Lesliemodel for the nematic liquid crystal flow. The evolution system consists of the Navier--Stokesequations coupled with a convective Ginzburg--Landau type equationfor the averaged molecular orientation. Wesuppose that the Navier--Stokesequations are characterized by a no-slip boundary condition and atime-dependent external force $\mathbf{g}(t)$, while the equation for the moleculardirector is subject to a time-dependent Dirichlet boundary condition $\mathbf{h}(t)$.We show that in the two-dimensional case,each global weak solution converges to a single stationary statewhen $\mathbf{h}(t)$ and $\mathbf{g}(t)$ converge to atime-independent boundary datum $\mathbf{h}_\infty$ and$\mathbf{0}$, respectively. Estimates on theconvergence rate are also obtained. In the three-dimensional case, we prove that global weak solutionsare eventually strong so that results similar to the two-dimensional case can be proved.We also show the existence of global strong solutions, provided that either theviscosity is large enough or the initial datum is close to a given equilibrium.
Violation of Ericksen inequalities in lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals

Abstract:By analyzing elastic theory for nematic liquid crystals, we distinguish three regimes of elastic constants. In one regime, the Ericksen inequalities are satisfied, and the ground state of the director field is uniform. In a second regime, certain necessary inequalities are violated, and the free energy is thermodynamically unstable. Between those possibilities, there is an intermediate regime, where the Ericksen inequalities are violated but the system is still stable. Remarkably, lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals are in the intermediate regime. We investigate the nonuniform structure of the director field in that regime, show that it depends sensitively on system geometry, and discuss the implications for lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics of complex fuids with multiple order parameters is governed by a set of dynamic equations with many material constants, of which only some are easily measurable. We present a unique example of a dynamic magneto-optic coupling in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid, in which long-range orientational order of liquid crystalline molecules is accompanied by long-range magnetic order of magnetic nanoplatelets. We investigate the dynamics of the magneto-optic response experimentally and theoretically and find out that it is significantly affected by the dissipative dynamic cross-coupling between the nematic and magnetic order parameters. The cross-coupling coefficient determined by fitting the experimental results with a macroscopic theory is of the same order of magnitude as the dissipative coefficient (rotational viscosity) that governs the reorientation of pure liquid crystals.
