Abstract:We compute the angular power spectrum C_l from the BATSE 3B catalog of 1122 gamma-ray bursts, and find no evidence for clustering on any scale. These constraints bridge the entire range from small scales (which probe source clustering and burst repetition) to the largest scales (which constrain possible anisotropies from the Galactic halo or from nearby cosmological large scale structures). We develop an analysis technique that takes the angular position errors into account, which enables us to place tight upper limits on the clustering down to scales l\approx 60, corresponding to a few degrees on the sky. The minimum-variance burst weighting that we employ is graphically visualized as an all-sky map where each burst is smeared out by an amount corresponding to its position uncertainty. We also present separate band-pass filtered sky maps for the quadrupole term and for the multipole-ranges l=3-10 and l=11-30, so that the fluctuations on different angular scales can be separately inspected for visual features such as localized ``hot spots" or structures aligned with the Galactic plane. These filtered maps reveal no apparent deviations from isotropy.

Abstract:This study is the first known attempt to search for gamma-ray burst repeaters combining data from gamma-ray experiments flying on board different satellites and making use of information derived from the bursts detected simultaneously by all the experiments. The proposed method is suitable to correlate GRB data provided by experiments that overlap partially or totally in time. As an application of this method we have correlated the positions of 57 gamma-ray bursts observed by WATCH/GRANAT and WATCH/EURECA with 1905 bursts detected by BATSE. Comparing the so-called ``added correlation'' between the WATCH and BATSE bursts with that obtained with simulated WATCH catalogues, we conclude that there is no indication of recurrent activity of WATCH bursts in the BATSE sample. We derive an upper limit of 15.8%, with a confidence level of 94%, for the number of WATCH gamma-ray bursts that could represent a population of repeaters in the BATSE sample.
A strong limit on the very-high-energy emission from GRB 150323A

Abstract:On 2015 March 23, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) responded to a Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) detection of a gamma-ray burst, with observations beginning 270 s after the onset of BAT emission, and only 135 s after the main BAT emission peak. No statistically significant signal is detected above 140 GeV. The VERITAS upper limit on the fluence in a 40-minute integration corresponds to about 1% of the prompt fluence. Our limit is particularly significant because the very-high-energy (VHE) observation started only similar to 2 minutes after the prompt emission peaked, and Fermi-Large Area Telescope observations of numerous other bursts have revealed that the high-energy emission is typically delayed relative to the prompt radiation and lasts significantly longer. Also, the proximity of GRB 150323A (z = 0.593) limits the attenuation by the extragalactic background light to similar to 50% at 100-200 GeV. We conclude that GRB 150323A had an intrinsically very weak high-energy afterglow, or that the GeV spectrum had a turnover below similar to 100 GeV. If the GRB exploded into the stellar wind of a massive progenitor, the VHE non-detection constrains the wind density parameter to be A greater than or similar to 3 x 10(11) g . cm(-1), consistent with a standard Wolf-Rayet progenitor. Alternatively, the VHE emission from the blast wave would be weak in a very tenuous medium such as the interstellar medium, which therefore cannot be ruled out as the environment of GRB 150323A.
Second Repeating FRB 180814.J0422+73: Ten-year Fermi-LAT Upper Limits and Implications

Abstract:The second repeating fast radio burst source, FRB 180814.J0422+73, was detected recently by the CHIME collaboration. We use the ten-year Fermi Large Area Telescope archival data to place a flux upper limit in the energy range of 100 MeV−10 GeV at the position of the source, which is ∼1.1 × 10−11 erg cm−2 s−1 for a six-month time bin on average, and ∼2.4 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1 for the entire ten-year time span. For the maximum redshift of z = 0.11, the ten-year upper limit of luminosity is ∼7.3 × 1043 erg s−1. We utilize these upper limits to constrain the fast radio burst (FRB) progenitor and central engine. For the rotation-powered young magnetar model, the upper limits can pose constraints on the allowed parameter space for the initial rotational period and surface magnetic field of the magnetar. We also place significant constraints on the kinetic energy of a relativistic external shock wave, ruling out the possibility that there existed a gamma-ray burst (GRB) beaming toward Earth during the past ten years as the progenitor of the repeater. The case of an off-beam GRB is also constrained if the viewing angle is not much greater than the jet opening angle. All of these constraints are more stringent if FRB 180814.J0422+73 is at a closer distance.

Abstract:Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z = 0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope for similar to 70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that the high-energy emission may instead be an extension of the synchrotron spectrum. VERITAS, a ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, began follow-up observations of GRB130427A similar to 71 ks (similar to 20 hr) after the onset of the burst. The GRB was not detected with VERITAS; however, the high elevation of the observations, coupled with the low redshift of the GRB, make VERITAS a very sensitive probe of the emission from GRB130427A for E > 100 GeV. The non-detection and consequent upper limit derived place constraints on the synchrotron self-Compton model of high-energy gamma-ray emission from this burst.

Abstract:Thirty-six patients with definite or classical rheumatoid arthritis participated in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of adding amitriptyline to the treatment regimen for the relief of pain not adequately controlled by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Dosage of amitriptyline was increased gradually up to 25 mg 3-times daily and patients were followed up for 12 weeks. Assessments were made of joint pain and tenderness every 4 weeks. The results showed no difference between the amitriptyline and placebo-treated patients for either parameter.
Repeating Frb 121102: Eight-Year Fermi-Lat Upper Limits and Implications

Abstract:The repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source that produced FRB 121102 was recently localized in a star-forming galaxy at z =0.193, which is associated with an extended radio source at the burst location. One possibility is that the repeating FRBs are produced by a new-born magnetar, which also powers the radio nebula. If so, the magnetar may produce gamma-ray emission due to magnetic dipolar spin-down. The luminosity depends on the magnetar spin parameters and age. We process the eight-year Fermi-LAT data at the position of FRB 121102 and place an energy flux upper limit of similar to 10(-11) erg cm(-2) s(-1) in time bins with six-month intervals, and an accumulated energy flux upper limit of similar to 4x10(-12)erg cm(-2)s(-1) over the eight-year span. The corresponding. gamma-ray luminosity upper limits are similar to 10(45) erg s(-1) and similar to 4x10(44)ergs(-1) for the time-resolved and time-integrated analyses, respectively. We discuss the implications of these limits on the young magnetar model.

Abstract:This is the first in a series of gamma-ray burst spectroscopy catalogs from the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, each covering a different aspect of burst phenomenology. In this paper, we present time-sequences of spectral fit parameters for 156 bursts selected for either their high peak flux or fluence. All bursts have at least eight spectra in excess of 45 sigma above background and span burst durations from 1.66 to 278 s. Individual spectral accumulations are typically 128 ms long at the peak of the brightest events, but can be as short as 16 ms, depending on the type of data selected. We have used mostly high energy resolution data from the Large Area Detectors, covering an energy range of typically 28 - 1800 keV. The spectral model chosen is from a small empirically-determined set of functions, such as the well-known `GRB' function, that best fits the time-averaged burst spectra. Thus, there are generally three spectral shape parameters available for each of the 5500 total spectra: a low-energy power-law index, a characteristic break energy and possibly a high-energy power-law index. We present the distributions of the observed sets of these parameters and comment on their implications. Constraints on Jets and Luminosity Function of Gamma-ray Bursts Associated with Supernovae

Abstract:If Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are generally associated with supernovae like 1998bw, a relatively wide intrinsic luminosity function is implied, which indicates the existence of a large amount of undetected dim bursts, and a much higher event-rate than is often assumed. If it is assumed that the intrinsic luminosity function of GRBs is a power-law: ${\phi (L)} \propto {L^{-\beta}}$ ($\beta > 0$, $L_{min} \leq L \leq L_{max}$), data from the BATSE 4B catalog can be used to constrain slope index $\beta$ and the dynamic range width Log ${L_{max}\over L_{min}}$. Using a K-S test comparison with the observational Log $N$ - Log $P$, we find constraints on the GRB fireball model, GRB jets, and the possible GRB contribution to cosmic gamma-ray background. We find the acceptable dynamic range for $10^2<L_{max}/L_{min} < 10^7$.Our results show that jet model is more likely to be related more highly energetic explosion than fireball model.Our studies also show that the luminosity function provided by a purely special relativistic effect on a jet is outside of the K-S test acceptable range. Were intrinsic beaming to confine the jet to $\theta_{max} < 1/\gamma$ however, the effects of relativistic beaming would not dominate.
A Catalog of Redshift Estimates for 1366 BATSE Long-Duration Gamma-Ray Bursts: Evidence for Strong Selection Effects on the Phenomenological Prompt Gamma-Ray Correlations

Abstract:We present a catalog of the redshift estimates and probability distributions for 1366 individual Long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (LGRBs) detected by the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). This result is based on a careful classification and modeling of the population distribution of BATSE LGRBs in the 5-dimensional space of redshift as well as intrinsic prompt gamma-ray emission properties: peak luminosity, total isotropic emission, the spectral peak energy, and the intrinsic duration, while taking into account the detection mechanism of BATSE and sample incompleteness. The underlying assumption in our modeling approach is that LGRBs trace the Cosmic Star Formation Rate and that the joint 4-dimensional distribution of the aforementioned prompt gamma-ray emission properties follows a multivariate log-normal distribution. Our modeling approach enables us to constrain the redshifts of BATSE LGRBs to average uncertainty ranges of $0.7$ and $1.7$ at $50\%$ and $90\%$ confidence levels, respectively. Our predictions are almost entirely at odds with the previous estimates of BATSE redshifts based on the phenomenological high-energy correlations, in particular with the estimates derived from the lag-luminosity and the variability-luminosity relations. There is, however, a weak but significant correlation of strength $\sim0.26$ between our predicted redshift estimates and those derived from the hardness-brightness relations. The discrepancies between the estimates can be explained by the strong influence of sample incompleteness in shaping the phenomenologically proposed high-energy correlations in the literature. The presented catalog here can be useful for demographic studies of LGRBs and studies of individual BATSE events.

Abstract:FRB 180916.J0158+65 is one of the nearest, periodically repeating, and actively bursting fast radio bursts (FRBs) that has been localized to the outskirts of a spiral galaxy. In this work we study the FRB with the hard X-ray 14-195 keV data from the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. BAT uses coded mask technology giving a localization of less than or similar to 3 ' in the hard X-ray band, along with an accurate background estimation. BAT has been observing the source location in survey mode since 2020 February. The survey mode observations involve background subtracted spectra, integrated over a time span ranging 300-2000 s at the source location (from 2022 February-2022 January). We analyzed all the similar to 230 survey mode observations from BAT and checked for any signal in any of the observations. We did not detect any signal at >5 sigma confidence level in any of the observations. We could estimate a 5 sigma upper limit on the 14-195 keV flux, which ranged between 4.5 x 10(-10)-7.6 x 10(-9 )erg cm(-2 )s(-1). At the source distance this relates to a 5 sigma upper limit on a luminosity of 5.08 x 10(44)-8.5 x 10(45 )erg s(-1). With this estimate, we could rule out any persistent X-ray emission at the source location for these snapshots of BAT observations.
A Test of the Power-Law Relationship Between Gamma-Ray Burst Pulse-Width Ratio and Energy Expected in Fireballs and Uniform Jets

Abstract:A power-law relationship between the pulse width and energy of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been found by many authors. Recently, under the assumption that the Doppler effect of the relativistically expanding fireball surface (or, in some papers, the curvature effect) is important, Qin et al. showed that, in most cases, this power-law relationship would exist in a certain energy range, and, within a similar range, a power-law relationship of an opposite trend between the ratio of the rising width to the decaying width and energy would be expected for the same burst. We check this prediction with two GRB samples that contain well-identified pulses. A power-law anticorrelation between the full pulse width and energy and a power-law correlation between the pulse-width ratio and energy are seen in the light curves of the majority (around 65 per cent) of bursts of the two samples within the energy range of BATSE, suggesting that these bursts probably arise from the emission associated with the shocks occurring on a relativistically expanding fireball surface. For the rest of the bursts, the relationships between these quantities had not been predicted previously. We propose considering other spectral evolutionary patterns or other radiation mechanisms such as a varying synchrotron or Comptonized spectrum to check whether the observed relationships for these bursts can also be accounted for by the Doppler model. In addition, we find that the upper limits of the width ratio for the two samples do not exceed 0.9, in agreement with what has previously been predicted by the Doppler model. The plateau/power law/plateau and the peaked features predicted and detected previously by Qin et al. are generally observed, with exceptions noticed only in a few cases. According to the distinct values of two power-law indices, alpha(FWHM) and alpha(ratio), we divide the bursts into three subsets that are located in different areas of the alpha(FWHM)-alpha(ratio) plane. We suspect that different locations of (alpha(FWHM), alpha(ratio)) might correspond to different mechanisms.
The true fraction of repeating fast radio bursts revealed through CHIME source count evolution

Abstract:Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are classified into repeaters and non-repeaters, with only a few percent of the observed FRB population from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) confirmed as repeaters. However, this figure represents only a lower limit due to the observational biases, and the true fraction of repeaters remains unknown. Correcting for these biases uncovers a notable decline in apparently non-repeating FRB detection rate as the CHIME operational time increases. This finding suggests that a significant portion of apparently non-repeating FRBs could in fact exhibit repetition when observed over more extended periods. A simple population model infers that the true repeater fraction likely exceeds 50% with 99% confidence, a figure substantially larger than the observed face value, even consistent with 100%. This greater prevalence of repeaters had previously gone unnoticed due to their very low repetition rates ($\sim$10$^{-3.5}$ hr$^{-1}$ on average). Hence, theoretical FRB models must incorporate these low-rate repeaters. Furthermore, our results indicate a significantly higher repeater volume number density, potentially exceeding observed values by up to 10$^4$ times, which in turn impacts comparisons with potential FRB progenitors.

Are There Any Redshift >8 Gamma-Ray Bursts in the BATSE Catalog?

Abstract:Several luminosity indicators have been found for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) wherein measurable light curve and spectral properties are well-correlated with the peak luminosity. Several papers have each applied one different luminosity relation to find redshifts for BATSE GRBs and claim to identify specific bursts with z>8. The existence of such high redshift events is not surprising, as BATSE has enough sensitivity to see them and GRBs are expected out to the redshift of the first star formation. To improve results we used five luminosity relations with updated calibrations to determine redshifts with error bars. Combining these relations, we calculated the redshifts of 36 BATSE GRBs with claimed z>8. Our results include 13 bursts with our derived best redshift z_best>8, which looks promising at first. But the calculated redshift uncertainties are significantly large in these selected cases. With only one exception, all of our bursts have z_1siglow<9. The one exception (BATSE trigger 2035) is likely a short duration burst at z>~4. Our best case for a very high redshift event is BATSE trigger 3142 with z_best>20 and z_1siglow=8.9, however we can only say z>4.1 at the two-sigma confidence level. In all, we cannot point toward any one BATSE burst as confidently having z>8. One implication is to greatly weaken prior claims that GRBs have a steeply rising rate-density out to high redshifts.

On the Association of Gamma-ray Bursts with Massive Stars: Implications for Number Counts and Lensing Statistics

Abstract:Recent evidence appears to link gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to star-forming regions in galaxies at cosmological distances. If short-lived massive stars are the progenitors of GRBs, the rate of events per unit cosmological volume should be an unbiased tracer (i.e. unaffected by dust obscuration and surface brightness limits) of the cosmic history of star formation. Here we use realistic estimates for the evolution of the stellar birthrate in galaxies to model the number counts, redshift distribution, and time-delay factors of GRBs. We present luminosity function fits to the BATSE log N-log P relation for different redshift distributions of the bursts. Our results imply about 1-2 GRBs every one million Type II supernovae, and a characteristic `isotropic-equivalent' burst luminosity in the range 3-20 x 1e51 ergs/s (for H_0=65 km/s/Mpc). We compute the rate of multiple imaging of background GRBs due to foreground mass condensations in a Lambda-dominated cold dark matter cosmology, assuming that dark halos approximate singular isothermal spheres on galaxy scales and Navarro-Frenk-White profiles on group/cluster scales, and are distributed in mass according to the Press-Schechter model. We show that the expected sensivity increase of Swift relative to BATSE could result in a few strongly lensed individual bursts detected down to a photon flux of 0.1 phot/s/cm^2 in a 3-year survey. Because of the partial sky coverage, however, it is unlikely that the Swift satellite will observe recurrent events (lensed pairs).

Abstract:Abstract Ultra-high energy cosmic rays are the most extreme energetic particles detected on Earth, however, their acceleration sites are still mysterious. We explore the contribution of low-luminosity gamma-ray bursts to the ultra-high energy cosmic ray flux, since they form the bulk of the nearby population. We analyse a representative sample of these bursts detected by BeppoSAX, INTEGRAL and Swift between 1998-2016, and found that in order to reconcile our theoretical flux with the observed flux, these bursts should accelerate at most 10−13 M⊙ of ultra-high energy cosmic rays.

The Complete BATSE Spectral Catalog of Bright Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:We present a systematic spectral analysis of 350 bright Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) observed with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE; $\sim$ 30 keV -- 2 MeV) with high temporal and spectral resolution. Our sample was selected from the complete set of 2704 BATSE GRBs based on their energy fluence or peak photon flux values to assure good statistics, and included 17 short GRBs. To obtain well-constrained spectral parameters, several photon models were used to fit each spectrum. We compared spectral parameters resulting from the fits using different models, and the spectral parameters that best represent each spectrum were statistically determined, taking into account the parameterization differences among the models. A thorough analysis was performed on 350 time-integrated and 8459 time-resolved burst spectra, and the effects of integration times in determining the spectral parameters were explored. Using the results, we studied correlations among spectral parameters and their evolution pattern within each burst. The resulting spectral catalog is the most comprehensive study of spectral properties of GRB prompt emission to date, and is available electronically from the High-Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC). The catalog provides reliable constraints on particle acceleration and emission mechanisms in GRBs.
On the Bimodal Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:Kouveliotou et al. recently confirmed that gamma-ray bursts are bimodal in duration. In this paper we compute the statistical properties of the short (less-than-or-equal-to 2 s) and long (>2 s) bursts using a method of analysis that makes no assumption regarding the location of the bursts, whether in the Galaxy or at a cosmological distance. We find the 64 ms channel on BATSE to be more sensitive to short bursts and the 1024 ms channel to be more sensitive to long bursts. We show that all the currently available data are consistent with the simple hypothesis that both short and long bursts have the same spatial distribution and that within each population the sources are standard candles. The rate of short bursts per unit volume is about 40% of the rate of long bursts. Although the durations of short and long gamma-ray bursts span several orders of magnitude and the total energy of a typical short burst is smaller than that of a typical long burst by a factor of approximately 20, surprisingly the peak luminosities of the two kinds of bursts are equal to within a factor of approximately 2.
Constraining the jet composition of GRB 221009A with the prompt TeV emission limit

Abstract:Recent LHAASO observations of the prompt emission phase of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A imposes a stringent limit on the flux ratio between the TeV and MeV emissions, $F_{\rm TeV}/F_{\rm MeV}\le 2\times10^{-5}$, during the period $220 \operatorname{-}230\, {\rm s}$ after the trigger. bf This period covers the peak of the main MeV burst and is just before the TeV afterglow emerges. Within the framework of internal shocks, we study the internal $\gamma\gamma$ absorption in GRB 221009A by generating a set of synthetic bursts in a simulation that reproduces the observed feature of GRB 221009A. We find that the $\gamma\gamma$ absorption does not lead to an exponential cutoff, but rather a power-law spectrum, consistent with previous works. We further find that the attenuation due to $\gamma\gamma$ absorption alone cannot explain the flux limit ratio of GRB 221009A, suggesting a low ratio between synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and synchrotron emission outputs. This requires the magnetic field energy density to be much larger than the synchrotron photon energy density so that the SSC flux is greatly suppressed. This indicates that the jet composition of GRB 221009A is likely Poynting-flux-dominated.

Abstract:In recent years, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) interferometer has revealed a large number of fast radio bursts (FRBs), including a sizable population that demonstrates repeating behavior. This transit facility, employing a real-time FRB search pipeline, continually scans the sky with declinations between −10° and 90° for events with fluences ⪆0.4 Jy ms. We simulate a population of repeating FRBs by performing Monte Carlo simulations of underlying source populations processed through a mock CHIME/FRB observing pipeline. Assuming intrinsic repeater rates follow a Poisson distribution, we test assumptions about the burst populations of the repeater sample, and construct models of the FRB sample assuming various cosmological distributions. We infer the completeness of CHIME/FRB observations as a function of observing cadence and redshifts out to 0.5. We find that, if all simulated bursts have a fixed Poisson probability of repetition over their integrated time of observation, repeating burst detections across comoving volume should continue to grow near linearly on the order of decades. We predict that around 170 of the current CHIME/FRB one-off sources will ultimately repeat. We also make projections for FRB repeaters by future facilities and demonstrate that the number of repeaters they find could saturate on a ∼3 yr timescale.
