Abstract:By studying the structure of infrared divergences in a toy propagator in the replica approach to the Ising spin glass below $T_c$, we suggest a possible cancellation mechanism which could decrease the degree of singularity in the loop expansion.

Abstract:Large-scale simulations have been performed in the current-driven three-dimensional XY spin glass with resistively shunted-junction dynamics for sample sizes up to 64(3). It is observed that the linear resistivity at low temperatures tends to zero, providing a strong evidence of a finite-temperature phase-coherence (i.e., spin-glass) transition. Dynamical scaling analysis demonstrates that a perfect collapse of current-voltage data can be achieved. The obtained critical exponents agree with those in equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations, and are compatible with those observed in various experiments on high-T-c cuprate superconductors. It is suggested that the spin and the chirality order simultaneously. A genuine continuous depinning transition is found at zero temperature. For low temperature creep motion, critical exponents are evaluated, and a non-Arrhenius creep motion is observed in the low temperature ordered phase. It is proposed that the XY spin glass gives an effective description of the transport properties in high-T-c superconductors with d-wave symmetry.

Abstract:We unveil the multifractal behavior of Ising spin glasses in their low-temperature phase. Using the Janus II custom-built supercomputer, the spin-glass correlation function is studied locally. Dramatic fluctuations are found when pairs of sites at the same distance are compared. The scaling of these fluctuations, as the spin-glass coherence length grows with time, is characterized through the computation of the singularity spectrum and its corresponding Legendre transform. A comparatively small number of site pairs controls the average correlation that governs the response to a magnetic field. We explain how this scenario of dramatic fluctuations (at length scales smaller than the coherence length) can be reconciled with the smooth, self-averaging behavior that has long been considered to describe spin-glass dynamics.

Abstract:We derive the zero-temperature phase diagram of spin glass models with a generic fraction of ferromagnetic interactions on the Bethe lattice. We use the cavity method at the level of one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) and we find three phases: A replica-symmetric (RS) ferromagnetic one, a magnetized spin glass one (the so-called mixed phase), and an unmagnetized spin glass one. We are able to give analytic expressions for the critical point where the RS phase becomes unstable with respect to 1RSB solutions: we also clarify the mechanism inducing such a phase transition. Finally we compare our analytical results with the outcomes of a numerical algorithm especially designed for finding ground states in an efficient way, stressing weak points in the use of such numerical tools for discovering RSB effects. Some of the analytical results are given for generic connectivity.

Entanglement and replica symmetry breaking in a driven-dissipative quantum spin glass

Abstract:We describe simulations of the quantum dynamics of a confocal cavity QED system that realizes an intrinsically driven-dissipative spin glass. A close connection between open quantum dynamics and replica symmetry breaking is established, in which individual quantum trajectories are the replicas. We observe that entanglement plays an important role in the emergence of replica symmetry breaking in a fully connected, frustrated spin network of up to fifteen spin-1/2 particles. Quantum trajectories of entangled spins reach steady-state spin configurations of lower energy than that of semiclassical trajectories. Cavity emission allows monitoring of the continuous stochastic evolution of spin configurations, while backaction from this projects entangled states into states of broken Ising and replica symmetry. The emergence of spin glass order manifests itself through the simultaneous absence of magnetization and the presence of nontrivial spin overlap density distributions among replicas. Moreover, these overlaps reveal incipient ultrametric order, in line with the Parisi RSB solution ansatz for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. A nonthermal Parisi order parameter distribution, however, highlights the driven-dissipative nature of this quantum optical spin glass. This practicable system could serve as a testbed for exploring how quantum effects enrich the physics of spin glasses.

A Parisi Formula for Quantum Spin Glasses

Abstract:We establish three equivalent versions of a Parisi formula for the free energy of mean-field spin glasses in a transversal magnetic field. These results are derived from available results for classical vector spin glasses by an approximation method using the functional integral representation of the partition function. In this approach, the order parameter is a non-decreasing function with values in the non-negative, real hermitian Hilbert-Schmidt operators. For the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, we also show that under the assumption of self-averaging of the self-overlap, the optimising Parisi order parameter is found within a two-dimensional subspace spanned by the self-overlap and the fully stationary overlap.

Abstract:Replica field theory is used to study the n-dependent free energy of the Ising spin glass in a first order perturbative treatment. Large sample-to-sample deviations of the free energy from its quenched average prove to be Gaussian, independently of the special structure of the order parameter. The free energy difference between the replica symmetric and (infinite level) replica symmetry broken phases is studied in details: the line n(T) where it is zero coincides with the Almeida-Thouless line for d>8. The dimensional domain 6<d<8 is more complicated, and several scenarios are possible.

Abstract:The Parisi solution of the mean-field spin glass has been widely accepted and celebrated. Its marginal stability in 3d and its complexity however raised the question of its relevance to real spin glasses. This paper gives a short overview of the important experimental results which could be understood within the mean-field solution. The existence of a true phase transition and the particular behaviour of the susceptibility below the freezing temperature, predicted by the theory, are clearly confirmed by the experimental results. The behaviour of the complex order parameter and of the Fluctuation Dissipation ratio are in good agreement with results of spontaneous noise measurements. The very particular ultrametric symmetry, the key feature of the theory, provided us with a simple description of the rejuvenation and memory effects observed in experiment. Finally, going a step beyond mean-field, the paper shortly discusses new analyses in terms of correlated domains characterized by their length scales, as well as new experiments on superspin glasses which compare well with recent theoretical simulations.

Abstract:We present a numerical method to generate explicit realizations of the tree of states in mean-field spin glasses. The resulting study illuminates the physical meaning of the full replica symmetry breaking solution and provides detailed information on the structure of the spin-glass phase. A cavity approach ensures that the method is self-consistent and permits the evaluation of sophisticated observables, such as correlation functions. We include an example application to the study of finite-size effects in single-sample overlap probability distributions, a topic that has attracted considerable interest recently.

Free Energy Difference Fluctuations in Short-Range Spin Glasses

Abstract:It is generally believed (but not yet proved) that Ising spin glasses with nearest-neighbor interactions have a phase transition in three and higher dimensions to a low-temperature spin glass phase, but the nature of this phase remains controversial, especially whether it is characterized by multiple incongruent Gibbs states. Of particular relevance to this question is the behavior of the typical free energy difference restricted to a finite volume between two such putative Gibbs states, as well as the nature of the fluctuations of their free energy difference as the couplings within the volume vary. In this paper we investigate these free energy difference fluctuations by introducing a new kind of metastate which classifies Gibbs states through their edge overlap values with a reference Gibbs state randomly chosen from the support of the periodic boundary condition (PBC) metastate. We find that the free energy difference between any two incongruent pure states, regardless of the details of how they're organized into mixed states within the PBC metastate, converges to a Gaussian (or Gaussian-like) distribution whose variance scales with the volume, proving a decades-old conjecture of Fisher and Huse. The same conclusion applies, though with some additional restrictions, to both mixed Gibbs states and ground states. We discuss some implications of these results.

Abstract:We show that the algebra of Parisi ultrametric matrices is recovered by the real-time, replica-free, Dyson-Keldysh equations of infinite-range quantum spin glasses in the late time glassy limit. This connects to earlier results on classical and quantum systems showing how ultrametricity emerges from the persistent slow aging dynamics of the glass phase. The stationary spin glass state thereby spontaneously breaks thermal symmetry, or the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relation of a state in global thermal equilibrium. We describe the Keldysh path integral of the infinite-range Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields, and in the context of the Landau expansion of the action functional, show how the long-time limit connects to the full replica symmetry breaking obtained in the equilibrium formalism. We also illustrate our formalism by applying it to the spherical quantum $p$-spin model, which only exhibits one-step replica symmetry breaking

Abstract:In this paper we study the competition between the Kondo effect and RKKY interactions near the zero-temperature quantum critical point of an Ising-like metallic spin-glass. We consider the mean-field behaviour of various physical quantities. In the `quantum- critical regime' non-analytic corrections to the Fermi liquid behaviour are found for the specific heat and uniform static susceptibility, while the resistivity and NMR relaxation rate have a non-Fermi liquid dependence on temperature.

Abstract:Non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP) problems are ubiquitous in almost every field of study. Recently, all-optical approaches have been explored for solving classic NP problems based on the spin-glass Ising Hamiltonian. However, obtaining programmable spin-couplings in large-scale optical Ising simulators, on the other hand, remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate control of the interaction length between user-defined parts of a fully-connected Ising system. This is achieved by exploiting the knowledge of the transmission matrix of a random medium and by using diffusers of various thickness. Finally, we exploit our spin-coupling control to observe replica-to-replica fluctuations and its analogy to standard replica symmetry breaking.

Abstract:The interpolation method is a powerful tool for rigorous analysis of mean-field spin glass models, both with and without dilution. In this study, we show that the interpolation method can be applied to Ising spin glass models in one dimension, such as a one-dimensional chain and a two-leg ladder. In one dimension, the replica symmetric (RS) cavity method is naturally expected to be rigorous for Ising spin glass models. Using the interpolation method, we rigorously prove that the RS cavity method provides lower bounds on the quenched free energies of Ising spin glass models in one dimension at any finite temperature in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:Physical quantities in the mixed $p$-spin glasses are evaluated with Nishimori's gauge theory and several variance inequalities. The $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry breaking and the replica-symmetry breaking are studied in finite and infinite dimensions. Obtained bounds on the expectation of the square of the magnetization and spontaneous magnetization enable us to clarify properties of paramagnetic and spin glass phases. It is proven that variances of ferromagnetic and spin glass order parameters vanish on the Nishimori line in the infinite volume limit. These results imply the self-averaging of these order parameters on the Nishimori line. The self-averaging of the spin glass order parameter rigorously justifies already argued absence of replica-symmetry breaking on the Nishimori line.

Abstract:We consider the probability distribution of large deviations in the spin-glass free energy for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field model, i.e. the exponentially small probability of finding a system with intensive free energy smaller than the most likely one. This result is obtained by computing $\Phi(n,T)=T \bar{Z^n}/ n$, i.e. the average value of the partition function to the power $n$ as a function of $n$. We study in full details the phase diagram of $\Phi(n,T)$ in the $(n,T)$ plane computing in particular the stability of the replica-symmetric solution. At low temperatures we compute $\Phi(n,T)$ in series of $n$ and $\tau=T_c-T$ at high orders using the standard hierarchical ansatz and confirm earlier findings on the $O(n^5)$ scaling. We prove that the $O(n^5)$ scaling is valid at all orders and obtain an exact expression for the coefficient in term of the function $q(x)$. Resumming the series we obtain the large deviations probability at all temperatures. At zero temperature the analytical prediction displays a remarkable quantitative agreement with the numerical data. A similar computation for the simpler spherical model is also performed and the connection between large and small deviations is discussed.
