Abstract:Motivated by the recent suggestion of anisotropic effective exchange interactions between Mn spins in Ga1-xMnxAs (arising as a result of spin-orbit coupling), we study their effects in diluted Heisenberg spin systems. We perform Monte Carlo simulations on several phenomenological model spin Hamiltonians, and investigate the extent to which frustration induced by anisotropic exchanges can reduce the low-temperature magnetization in these models and the interplay of this effect with disorder in the exchange. In a model with low coordination number and purely ferromagnetic exchanges, we find that the low-temperature magnetization is gradually reduced as exchange anisotropy is turned on. As the connectivity of the model is increased, the effect of small-to-moderate anisotropy is suppressed, and the magnetization regains its maximum saturation value at low temperatures unless the distribution of exchanges is very wide. To obtain significant suppression of the low-temperature magnetization in a model with high connectivity, as is found for long-range interactions, we find it necessary to have both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchanges (e.g., as in the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction). This implies that disorder in the sign of the exchange interaction is much more effective in suppressing magnetization at low temperatures than exchange anisotropy.

Abstract:We examine the effects of positional disorder of the magnetic ion in III-V Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors such as (Ga,Mn)As at low carrier densities on the nature of the low-temperature ordered magnetic state, using numerical mean field and Monte Carlo methods. We find that positional disorder leads to a highly inhomogeneous ferromagnetic order in the low carrier density limit, with unusual thermodynamic and magnetic behavior. Spin-orbit coupling presented in the valence band leads to frustration in the hole-doped system, but does not significantly affect the low temperature magnetization.

Abstract:Spinel ferrite Cu1-xZnxFe2O4 nanofibers over a compositional range 0 < x < 1 were prepared by electrospinning combined with sol-gel method. The influence of Zn2+ ions substitution on morphology, structure, and magnetic properties of copper ferrite has been investigated. The results show that surface of CuFe2O4 nanofibers consists of small open porosity, while surface of doped nanofibers reveals smooth and densified nature. With increasing Zn substitution, saturation magnetization initially increases and then decreases with a maximum value of 58.4 emu/g at x = 0.4, coercivity and square ratio all decrease. The influence of substitution on magnetic properties is related with the cation distraction and exchange interactions between spinel lattices.

Abstract:Based on experimental observations in A{x}MO{2} (A = Na, Li; M = Co, Ni), a model for suppression of magnetic frustration by electron doping in a nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic triangular lattice is presented. It is found that frustration can be quantified, as determined by geometry and bond-counting, and its magnitude is a non-monotonic function of $x$. A mean-field calculation provides temperature-dependent magnetization, spin-entropy and heat capacity. Low-doping (x = 0.25, 0.33) results in a highly frustrated regime. A{0.5}MO{2} has strongest order and no frustration, while high doping (x = 0.67, 0.75) leads to low frustration and higher spin-entropy. The results agree with experiments including neutron scattering, spin entropy-driven thermoelectricity and ion ordering.

Abstract:We investigate the interplay of exchange anisotropy and positional disorder on the magnetic properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). We find that the anisotropic spin exchange interactions arising from spin-orbit coupling do not lead to a large suppression of the ferromagnetism at low temperatures unless the anisotropy is very strong. This suggests that such effects observed in experiments are more likely to be due to antiferromagnetic exchange interactions or magnetically inert dopants. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Predicted Half-Metallicity and Ferromagnetism in the Fe (III) Doped BaZrO3 Perovskite: A Theoretical Insight

Abstract:The variance in the magnetoelectric behavior of BaZrO3 owing to the doping of Fe (III) on the Zr-site has been studied based on density functional calculations. We can predict the structural parameters, electronic structure, and ferromagnetic properties of BaFexZr1−xO3 precisely deprived of considering any strong correlation effect in the calculations. The equilibrium structural parameters are accounted to be in concurrence with the former theoretical and experimental investigations. It is observed that the structural phase remained semiconducting cubic (Pm-3m) up to 12.5% of Fe content and transformed to a conducting tetragonal phase (P4/mmm) beyond that. Spin-polarized density of states and band-structure calculations have probed that pristine BaZrO3 is a wide-bandgap semiconductor and in a nonmagnetic state. The ground-energy-state of Fe3+ doped BaZrO3 compounds varies from half-metal to metal in a ferromagnetic state. In particular, the present calculations have correctly predicted half-metallicity in BaFexZr1−xO3 when doping concentrations were 12.5% and 25%. The half-metallic gap ΔHM, which is the minimum of the lowest energy level of minority spin conduction bands relative to the Fermi level, and the absolute values of the topmost energy level of minority spin valence bands are estimated to be 0.55 eV in BaFe0.25Zr0.75O3 and 0.44 eV in BaFe0.5Zr0.5O3.
Competition between Ferrimagnetism and Magnetic Frustration in Zinc Substituted YBaFe4O7

Abstract:The substitution of zinc for iron in YBaFe4O7 has allowed the oxide series YBaFe4-xZnxO7, with 0.40 < x < 1.50, belonging to the "114" structural family to be synthesized. These oxides crystallize in the hexagonal symmetry (P63mc), as opposed to the cubic symmetry (F-43m) of YBaFe4O7. Importantly, the d.c. magnetization shows that the zinc substitution induces ferrimagnetism, in contrast to the spin glass behaviour of YBaFe4O7. Moreover, a.c. susceptibility measurements demonstrate that concomitantly these oxides exhibit a spin glass or a cluster glass behaviour, which increases at the expense of ferrimagnetism, as the zinc content is increased. This competition between ferrimagnetism and magnetic frustration is interpreted in terms of lifting of the geometric frustration, inducing the magnetic ordering, and of cationic disordering, which favours the glassy state.

Abstract:Strong spin-lattice coupling and prominent frustration effects observed in the 50% Fe-doped frustrated hexagonal are reported. A Néel transition at and a possible spin re-orientation transition at are observed in the magnetization data. From neutron powder diffraction data, the nuclear structure at and below 300 K was refined in polar P63cm space group. While the magnetic structure of LuMnO3 belongs to the representation, that of LuFe0.5Mn0.5O3 belongs to which is supported by the strong intensity for the (100) reflection and also judging by the presence of spin-lattice coupling. The refined atomic positions for Lu and Mn/Fe indicate significant atomic displacements at and which confirms strong spin-lattice coupling. Our results complement the discovery of room temperature multiferroicity in thin films of and would give impetus to study LuFe1−xMnxO3 systems as potential multiferroics where electric polarization is linked to giant atomic displacements.
Unveiling the Impact of B-site Distribution on the Frustration Effect in Double Perovskite Ca2FeReO6 Using Monte Carlo Simulation and Molecular Field Theory

Abstract:This work systematically investigates the spin glass behavior of the double perovskite Ca2FeReO6. Building on previous studies, we have developed a formula to quantify the ions distribution at B-site, incorporating the next-nearest neighbor interactions. Employing molecular field theory and Monte Carlo simulations, the influence of various arrangements of two B-site ions on frustration effects was uncovered. B-site is segmented into a and b-site, defining the number of nearest neighbors from Fea to Feb (and vice versa) as Zx(Zy). The significant frustration effects occur when 1<Zx(or Zy)<3, with Zx is not equal to Zy and also when Zx(or Zy) ~ 3 while Zy(or Zx) ~ 4. All of these are reflected in the variations observed in ground state magnetization and the Thermal Energy Step relation to Zx and Zy. The model proposed in this work can be applied to most B-site disordered in perovskite systems and even to other chemically disordered in frustrated systems.

Abstract:The structurally simplest high-temperature superconductor FeSe exhibits an intriguing superconducting nematic paramagnetic phase with unusual spin excitation spectra that are different from typical spin waves; thus, determining its effective magnetic exchange interactions is challenging. Here we report neutron scattering measurements of spin fluctuations of FeSe in the tetragonal paramagnetic phase. We show that the equal-time magnetic structure factor, S(Q), can be effectively modeled using the self-consistent Gaussian approximation calculation with highly frustrated nearest-neighbor (J1) and next-nearest-neighbor (J2) exchange couplings, and very weak further neighbor exchange interaction. Our results elucidate the frustrated magnetism in FeSe, which provides a natural explanation for the highly tunable superconductivity and nematicity in FeSe and related materials.
Spin Resistivity in Frustrated Antiferromagnets

Abstract:In this paper we study the spin transport in frustrated antiferromagnetic FCC films by Monte Carlo simulation. In the case of Ising spin model, we show that the spin resistivity versus temperature exhibits a discontinuity at the phase transition temperature: an upward jump or a downward fall, depending on how many parallel and antiparallel localized spins interacting with a given itinerant spin. The surface effects as well as the difference of two degenerate states on the resistivity are analyzed. Comparison with non frustrated antiferromagnets is shown to highlight the frustration effect. We also show and discuss the results of the Heisenberg spin model on the same lattice.

Abstract:Thin films of silver containing 0.3 - 1.5 at % Fe have been prepared by vapor co-deposition. Depending on substrate temperature and iron concentration we could systematically follow the formation of nanometer size clusters of iron from initially dilute iron monomers. samples were characterized via X-ray diffraction, resistivity and M\"{o}ssbauer spectroscopic measurements. The magnetic behavior derived from M\"{o}ssbauer data can be best described with an ensemble of ferromagnetic mono-domain particles. The magnetic freezing observed at low temperatures, is controlled via the inter-particle interactions mediated via conduction electron polarization, i.e. RKKY interaction. The interaction of the cluster magnetic moments with the conduction electron sea is best quantified by the electrical resistivity data. For all studied concentrations we find a non-monotonic variation with temperature which can be understood by competing shielding of the cluster moments by conduction electron spin scattering due to Kondo effect and the magnetic coupling.
Frustrated Bonds and Long Range Order in Quasi-2D Magnets

Abstract:We employ the Schwinger boson mean-field approach to study the effects of arbitrary frustrated bonds and plaquettes (formed from four frustrated bonds) in two-dimensional ferro- and antiferromagnets on the spin-wave spectrum and the correlation length at finite temperatures. We distinguish between strongly frustrated bonds (plaquettes), when the frustrated coupling $J^\prime$ exceeds the spin canting threshold $J_c$, and weakly frustrated bonds (plaquettes), with $J^\prime <J_c, (J_c-J^\prime)/J_c\sim 1$. It is shown that in antiferromagnets the amplitude of spin-wave scattering on strongly frustrated bonds or plaquettes grows with the decrease of the temperature. A small amount of such defects reduces significantly the spin-wave stiffness and the correlation length at low temperatures. As a result, the quasi-2D Néel temperature is sharply suppressed. Quantum fluctuations are also considered and their effect on the spin-wave spectrum is shown to be of the order of $(2S)^{-2}\ln^{-1}2S$ in the large spin limit. For weakly frustrated (nonfrustrated) defect bonds (plaquettes) the spin-wave stiffness renormalization is of the order of the dopant concentration and does not depend on the temperature. The results account for the observed properties of doped quasi-2D $La_2CuO_{4+x}$.

Abstract:The magnetic and electronic properties of α-NaMnO2 and delafossite CuMnO2 are investigated using a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. For the monoclinic structure at room temperature, CuMnO2 behaves like a frustrated spin-lattice. For the triclinic structure at low temperature, the obtained magnetic configurations of the lowest energy for both α-NaMnO2 and CuMnO2 are consistent with experiments. However, the exchange constants are all positive. This reveals that the magnetic frustration is only partially relieved at low temperature. It is also found that the Mn3+ ions are in a high-spin state. Taking into account the on-site Coulomb correlations, our results show that α-NaMnO2 and CuMnO2 are charge-transfer insulators.

Abstract:Frustrated spin systems have traditionally proven challenging to understand, owing to a scarcity of controlled methods for their analyses. By contrast, under strong magnetic fields, certain aspects of spin systems admit simpler and universal description in terms of hardcore bosons. The bosonic formalism is anchored by the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), which has helped explain the behaviors of a wide range of magnetic compounds under applied magnetic fields. Here, we focus on the interplay between frustration and externally applied magnetic field to identify instances where the BEC paradigm is no longer applicable. As a representative example, we consider the antiferromagnetic J1−J2−J3 model on the square lattice in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field, and demonstrate that the frustration-driven suppression of the Néel order leads to a Lifshitz transition for the hardcore bosons. In the vicinity of the Lifshitz point, the physics becomes unmoored from the BEC paradigm, and the behavior of the system, both at and below the saturation field, is controlled by a Lifshitz multicritical point. We obtain the resultant universal scaling behaviors, and provide strong evidence for the existence of a frustration and magnetic-field driven correlated bosonic liquid state along the entire phase boundary separating the Néel phase from other magnetically ordered states. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.066701 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets are prototypes of geometric frustration, even if for nearest-neighbor interactions quantum fluctuations are not usually strong enough to destroy magnetic ordering: stronger frustration is required to stabilize a spin-liquid phase. On the basis of static magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements, we demonstrate the emergence of ${\tilde{j}_{\text{eff}}=\frac12}$ moments in the triangular-lattice magnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$. These moments are subject to an extra source of frustration that causes magnetic correlations to set in far above both the magnetic ordering and Weiss temperatures. Corroborating the $\tilde{j}_{\text{eff}}=\frac12$ ground state, theory identifies ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange anisotropy as additional frustrating agent, altogether putting forward Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ as a promising Kitaev spin-liquid material.

Spin glass behavior upon diluting frustrated magnets and spin liquids: a Bethe-Peierls treatment

Abstract:A Bethe-Peierls treatment to dilution in frustrated magnets and spin liquids is given. A spin glass phase is present at low temperatures and close to the percolation point as soon as frustration takes a finite value in the dilute magnet model; the spin glass phase is reentrant inside the ferromagnetic phase. An extension of the model is given, in which the spin glass / ferromagnet phase boundary is shown not to reenter inside the ferromagnetic phase asymptotically close to the tricritical point whereas it has a turning point at lower temperatures. We conjecture similar phase diagrams to exist in finite dimensional models not constraint by a Nishimori's line. We increase frustration to study the effect of dilution in a spin liquid state. This provides a ``minimal'' ordering by disorder from an Ising paramagnet to an Ising spin glass.

Incommensurate state in a quasi-one-dimensional $S=1/2$ bond-alternating antiferromagnet with frustration in magnetic fields

Abstract:We investigate the critical properties of the $S=1/2$ bond-alternating spin chain with a next-nearest-neighbor interaction in magnetic fields. By the numerical calculation and the exact solution based on the effective Hamiltonian, we show that there is a parameter region where the longitudinal incommensurate spin correlation becomes dominant around the half-magnetization of the saturation. Possible interpretations of our results are discussed. We next investigate the effects of the interchain interaction ($J^{\prime}$). The staggered susceptibility and the uniform magnetization are calculated by combining the density-matrix renormalization group method with the interchain mean-field theory. For the parameters where the dominant longitudinal incommensurate spin correlation appears in the case $J^{\prime}=0$, the staggered long-range order does not emerge up to a certain critical value of $J^{\prime}$ around the half-magnetization of the saturation. We calculate the static structure factor in such a parameter region. The size dependence of the static structure factor at $k=2k_{\rm F}$ implies that the system has a tendency to form an incommensurate long-range order around the half-magnetization of the saturation. We discuss the recent experimental results for the NMR relaxation rate in magnetic fields performed for pentafluorophenyl nitronyl nitroxide.

Large magnetic thermal conductivity induced by frustration in low-dimensional quantum magnets

Abstract:We study the magnetic field-dependence of the thermal conductivity due to magnetic excitations in frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains. Near the saturation field, the system is described by a dilute gas of weakly interacting fermions (free-fermion fixed point). We show that in this regime the thermal conductivity exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the ratio α=J2/J1 between second- and first-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. This result is a direct consequence of the splitting of the single-particle dispersion minimum into two minima that takes place at the Lifshitz point α=1/4 . Upon increasing α from zero, the inverse mass vanishes at α=1/4 and it increases monotonically from zero for α≥1/4 . By deriving an effective low-energy theory of the dilute gas of fermions, we demonstrate that the Drude weight Kth of the thermal conductivity exhibits a similar dependence on α near the saturation field. Moreover, this theory predicts a transition between a two-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and a vector-chiral phase at a critical value α=αc that agrees very well with previous density matrix renormalization group results. We also show that the resulting curve Kth(α) is in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization (ED) results. For the low-magnetic field regime, our ED results show that Kth(α) has a pronounced minimum at α≃0.7 . Abstract:A detailed study of the electronic transport and magnetic properties of Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$Cr$_2$S$_4$ ($x \leq 0.5$) on single crystals is presented. The resistivity is investigated for $2 \leq T \leq 300$ K in magnetic fields up to 14 Tesla and under hydrostatic pressure up to 16 kbar. In addition magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements were performed. FMR and magnetization data reveal a pronounced magnetic anisotropy, which develops below the Curie temperature, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, and increases strongly towards lower temperatures. Increasing the Cu concentration reduces this effect. At temperatures below 35 K the magnetoresistance, $MR = \frac{\rho(0) - \rho(H)}{\rho(0)}$, exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the magnetic field, probably due to an enhanced anisotropy. Applying the field along the hard axis leads to a change of sign and a strong increase of the absolute value of the magnetoresistance. On the other hand the magnetoresistance remains positive down to lower temperatures, exhibiting a smeared out maximum with the magnetic field applied along the easy axis. The results are discussed in the ionic picture using a triple-exchange model for electron hopping as well as a half-metal utilizing a band picture.
