Abstract:The Mpemba effect is the counterintuitive phenomenon in statistical physics for which a far-from-equilibrium state can relax toward equilibrium faster than a state closer to equilibrium. This effect has raised a great curiosity since long time and has been studied extensively in many classical and quantum systems. Here it is shown that the Mpemba effect can be observed in optics as well. Specifically, the process of light diffusion in finite-sized photonic lattices under incoherent (dephasing) dynamics is considered. Rather surprisingly, it is shown that certain highly-localized initial light distributions can diffuse faster than initial broadly delocalized distributions. The effect is illustrated by considering random walk of optical pulses in fiber-based temporal mesh lattices, which should provide an experimentally-accessible setup for the demonstration of the Mpemba effect in optics.

Abstract:The Mpemba effect refers to the surprising observation where, under certain conditions, a far-from-equilibrium state can relax toward equilibrium faster than a state closer to equilibrium. A paradigmatic example is provided by the curious fact that hot water can sometimes freeze faster than cold water. The Mpemba effect has intrigued scientists since long time and has been predicted and observed in a variety of classical and quantum systems. Recently, the search for Mpemba-like effects of purely quantum nature has raised a major interest. Here we predict the emergence of Mpemba effect in the quantum optics context exploiting non-classical states of light. By analyzing the decay dynamics of photon fields in a leaky optical resonator or waveguide, it is demonstrated that the Mpemba effect emerges in the context of the quantum nature of light. Specifically, the relaxation dynamics is strongly influenced by the photon statistics of the initially trapped light field. The Mpemba effect is observed when comparing the decay dynamics of classical light fields (coherent states) with certain non-classical states, such as squeezed states and Schrödinger cat states

Abstract:The behavior of systems far from equilibrium is often complex and unpredictable, challenging and sometimes overturning the physical intuition derived from equilibrium scenarios. One striking example of this is the Mpemba effect, which implies that non-equilibrium states can sometimes relax more rapidly when they are further from equilibrium. Despite a rich historical background, the precise conditions and mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain unclear. Recently, there has been growing interest in investigating Mpemba-like effects within quantum systems. In this work, we explore a quantum manifestation of the Mpemba effect in a simple and paradigmatic model of open quantum systems: the damped quantum harmonic oscillator, which describes the thermalization process of a bosonic mode in contact with a thermal bath at finite temperature $T$. By means of an exact analytical analysis of the relaxation dynamics, we demonstrate that any initial distribution of populations with a mean excitation number exactly equal to the mean number of quanta in the thermal equilibrium state displays an accelerated relaxation to equilibrium, leading to a pronounced Mpemba effect. In particular, one can find a broad class of far-from-equilibrium distributions that relax to equilibrium faster than any other initial thermal state with a temperature $T'$ arbitrarily close to $T$. Thermalization becomes even faster when the initial out-of-equilibrium population distribution matches the first $r$ moments of the equilibrium distribution. In this scenario, the relaxation rate increases linearly with $r$, resulting in a super-accelerated thermalization process.

Mpemba effects in nonequilibrium open quantum systems

Abstract:The Mpemba effect was originally referred to as the faster icing of a higher-temperature system than a lower-temperature system, and was later generalized to anomalous decays of both classical and quantum observables to equilibrium states. Mpemba effect is mostly considered in classical systems and during cooling processes towards equilibrium states. We investigate the emergence of the effect in nonequilibrium quantum systems where the system has no asymptotic equilibrium state to approach. Instead, the system is put in contact with two different baths, and only a nonequilibrium state exists, sustained by constant energy injection from the surrounding thermal baths. Firstly, we show that the nonequilibrium conditions can dramatically enlarge the parameter regimes where the MPE emerges. Secondly, we demonstrate that the anomalous MPEs and inverse MPEs emerge in the evolution of quantum correlations in the two-site fermionic system and that nonequilibrium conditions can expedite or delay the MPEs. Thirdly, we show that the nonequilibrium-induced quantum coherence can have considerable contributions to the emergence of the MPE which the conventional Lindbladian dynamics fails to capture.

Abstract:The quicker freezing of hotter water, than a colder sample, when quenched to a common lower temperature, is referred to as the Mpemba effect (ME). While this counter-intuitive fact remains a surprize since long, efforts have begun to identify similar effect in other systems. We investigate the ME in a rather general context concerning magnetic phase transitions. From Monte Carlo simulations of model systems, viz., the Ising model and the q -state Potts model, with varying range of interaction and space dimension, we assert that hotter paramagnets undergo ferromagnetic ordering faster than the colder ones. This conclusion we have arrived at following the analyses of the simulation results on decay of energy and growth in ordering following quenches from different starting temperatures, to fixed final temperatures below the Curie points. The general observation, in all the considered models, without any element of frustration, is a crucial and important fact of our study. Furthermore, we have obtained an important scaling picture, on the strength of the effect, with respect to the variation in spatial correlation in the initial states. This behavior appears true irrespective of the nature of order-parameter fluctuation and even order of transition. The Mpemba effect in quantum oscillating and two-level systems

Abstract:The Empemba effect (ME) is investigated in the context of ubiquitous quantum oscillating and two-level systems (TLS) using a novel approach (DOI <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1088/1402-4896/ad97f1" href="https://doi.org/10.1088/1402-4896/ad97f1" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1088/1402-4896/ad97f1</a>). Exact reduced density matrices for various initial states are derived. The temporal behavior of the trace distance for these initial states is calculated analytically and presented. For a dissipative quantum oscillating system, it is demonstrated that number states $|N\ra$ intersect with coherent states $|\alpha\ra$, with this intersection occurring earlier for smaller values of $N$. Additionally, thermal states intersect with coherent states for specific values of $|\alpha|$, leading to the occurrence of the ME in these two scenarios. A weaker version of the ME is also observed for thermal and number states. In the case of a quantum TLS, it is shown that the ME effect occurs, and the potential for its realization and experimental observation is discussed, with reference to the Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) involving a decaying time-dependent coupling function.

Abstract:The Mpemba effect is a fingerprint of the anomalous relaxation phenomenon wherein an initially hotter system equilibrates faster than an initially colder system when both are quenched to the same low temperature. Experiments on a single colloidal particle trapped in a carefully shaped double well potential have demonstrated this effect recently [Nature 584, 64 (2020)]. In a similar vein, here, we consider a piece-wise linear double well potential that allows us to demonstrate the Mpemba effect using an exact analysis based on the spectral decomposition of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. We elucidate the role of the metastable states in the energy landscape as well as the initial population statistics of the particles in showcasing the Mpemba effect. Crucially, our findings indicate that neither the metastability nor the asymmetry in the potential is a necessary or a sufficient condition for the Mpemba effect to be observed.

Abstract:Since it's rediscovery in the twentieth century, the Mpemba effect, where a far-from-equilibrium state may relax faster than a state closer to equilibrium, has been extensively studied in classical systems and has recently received significant attention in quantum systems. Many theories explaining this counter-intuitive behavior in classical systems rely on memory effects. However, in quantum systems, the relation between the Mpemba effect and memory has remained unexplored. In this work, we consider a general non-Markovian open quantum setting and reveal new classes of quantum Mpemba effects, with no analog in Markovian quantum dynamics. Generically, open quantum dynamics possess a finite memory time and a unique steady state. Due to non-Markovian dynamics, even if the system is initialized in the steady state it can take a long time to relax back. We find other initial states that reach the steady state much faster. Most notably, we demonstrate that there can be an initial state in which the system reaches the steady state within the finite memory time itself, therefore giving the fastest possible relaxation to stationarity. We verify the effect for quantum dot systems coupled to electronic reservoirs in equilibrium and non-equilibrium setups at weak, intermediate and strong coupling, and both with and without interactions. Our work provides new insights into the rich physics underlying accelerated relaxation in quantum systems.

Abstract:An ancient and counterintuitive phenomenon know as the Mpemba effect (water can cool faster when initially heated up) showcases the critical role of initial conditions in relaxation processes. How to realize and utilize this effect for speeding up relaxation is an important but challenging task in purely quantum system till now. Here, we report the first experiment, as far as we know,about the strong Mpemba effect in a single trapped ion system in which an exponentially expedited relaxation in time is observed by preparing an optimal initial state with no excitation of the slowest decaying mode. Also, we find that the condition of realizing such effect coincides with the Liouvillian exceptional point, featuring the coalescence of both the eigenvalues and the eigenmodes of the system. Our work provides an efficient strategy to exponentially accelerate relaxations of quantum system to their stationary state, and suggests a link unexplored yet between the Mpemba effect and the non-Hermitian physics. It could open up the door to engineer a wide range of dissipative quantum systems by utilizing the anomalous Mpemba effect, for applications in quantum simulation and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Significance The Mpemba effect, wherein an initially hotter system relaxes faster when quenched to lower temperatures than an initially cooler system, has attracted much attention. Paradoxically, its very existence is a hot topic. Using massive numerical simulations, we show unambiguously that the Mpemba effect is present in the archetypical model system for complex behavior, spin glasses. We find that the Mpemba effect in spin glasses is due to the aging dynamics of the internal energy, as controlled by the nonequilibrium spin-glass coherence length. Interestingly, the effect is not present when the system remains all of the time in the paramagnetic phase. Therefore, the Mpemba effect suggests itself as an effective probe for a glass transition, potentially useful for other glass-forming systems.

Quantum Mpemba Effect in Random Circuits

Abstract:The essence of the Mpemba effect is that non-equilibrium systems may relax faster the further they are from their equilibrium configuration. In the quantum realm, this phenomenon arises in the dynamics of closed systems, where it is witnessed by fundamental features such as symmetry and entanglement. Here, we study the quantum Mpemba effect in charge-preserving random circuits on qudits via entanglement asymmetry, combining extensive numerical simulations and analytical mapping to a classical statistical mechanics problem. We show that the more asymmetric certain classes of initial states (tilted ferromagnets) are, the faster they restore symmetry and reach the grand-canonical ensemble. Conversely, other classes of states (tilted antiferromagnets) do not show the Mpemba effect. Our analysis is based on minimal principles -- locality, unitarity, and symmetry. Consequently, our results represent a significant advancement in clarifying the emergence of Mpemba physics in generic systems, including Hamiltonian and Floquet quantum circuits.

Abstract:We generalize the classical thermal Mpemba effect (where an initially hot system relaxes faster to the final equilibrium state than a cold one) to open quantum systems coupled to several reservoirs. We show that, in general, two different types of quantum Mpemba effects are possible. They may be distinguished by quantum state tomography. However, the existence of a quantum Mpemba effect (without determining the type) can already be established by measuring simpler observables such as currents or energies. Abstract:Mpemba effect refers to the counterintuitive phenomenon of a hotter system equilibrating faster than a colder system when both are quenched to the same low temperature. For a Brownian particle trapped in a piece-wise linear single well potential that is devoid of any other metastable minima we show the existence of Mpemba effect for a wide range of parameters through an exact solution. This result challenges the prevalent explanation of the Mpemba effect that requires the energy landscape to be rugged with multiple minima. We also demonstrate the existence of inverse and strong Mpemba effects.

Microscopic theory of Mpemba effects and a no-Mpemba theorem for monotone many-body systems

Abstract:Mpemba effects (MPEs), where a hotter system cools faster than a colder one, present intriguing anomalies in relaxation processes. Despite their universal observation and significant fundamental and practical implications, a comprehensive theoretical understanding based on microscopic properties remains elusive. In this Letter, we introduce two universal frameworks for classical systems to address this gap. Firstly, we reveal that MPEs, traditionally defined by macroscopic temperature comparisons, can be understood through microstate comparisons. This insight offers a straightforward and universal microscopic perspective on MPEs, relevant for experiments and numerical simulations to identify their microscopic origins. Secondly, we establish a "no-Mpemba theorem," a rigorous sufficient condition for the absence of MPEs, thereby identifying specific classes of systems devoid of these effects. Our findings are exemplified using ferromagnetic Ising models and one-dimensional multiparticle systems, demonstrating the practical applicability of our theoretical advancements.

Thermomajorization Mpemba Effect: Unification and Universality

Abstract:The Mpemba effect is a counterintuitive physical phenomenon where a hot system cools faster than a warm one. In recent years, theoretical analyses of the Mpemba effect have been developed for microscopic systems and experimentally verified. However, the conventional theory relies on a specific choice of distance measure to quantify relaxation speed, leading to several theoretical ambiguities. In this Letter, we derive a rigorous quantification of the Mpemba effect based on thermomajorization theory, referred to as the thermomajorization Mpemba effect. This approach resolves all existing ambiguities and provides a unification of the conventional Mpemba effect across all monotone measures. Furthermore, we demonstrate the universality of the thermomajorization Mpemba effect for Markovian dynamics, rigorously proving that it can occur in any temperature regime with fixed energy levels. Our findings offer a paradigm shift in understanding thermal relaxation processes and provide insights into designing systems that exhibit the Mpemba effect.

Abstract:Various exotic phenomena emerge in non-equilibrium quantum many-body systems. The Mpemba effect, denoting the situation where a hot system freezes faster than the colder one, is a counterintuitive non-equilibrium phenomenon that has attracted enduring interest for more than half a century. In this Letter, we report a novel phenomenon of the Mpemba effect in the imaginary-time relaxation dynamics in quantum many-body systems, dubbed as imaginary-time Mpemba effect (ITME). Through numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulation, we unambiguously demonstrate that in different classes of interacting quantum models, the initial states with higher energy are relaxed faster than lower-energy initial states in the process of imaginary-time relaxation. The emergence of ITME is intimately associated with the low-energy excitations in quantum many-body systems. More crucially, since imaginary-time dynamics is broadly applied in numerical simulation on the quantum many-body ground states, the discovery of ITME potentially provides a new pathway to expedite the quantum many-body computation, particularly for QMC involving the sign problem.

Abstract:Despite extensive research, the fundamental physical mechanisms underlying the Mpemba effect, a phenomenon where a substance cools faster after initially being heated, remain elusive. Although historically linked with water, the Mpemba effect manifests across diverse systems, sparking heightened interest in Mpemba-like phenomena. Concurrently, the Kovacs effect, a memory phenomenon observed in materials such as polymers, involves rapid quenching and subsequent temperature changes, resulting in nonmonotonic relaxation behavior. This paper probes the intricacies of the Mpemba and Kovacs effects within the framework of the time-delayed Newton's law of cooling, recognized as a simplistic yet effective phenomenological model accommodating memory phenomena. This law allows for a nuanced comprehension of temperature variations, introducing a delay time ( τ ) and incorporating specific protocols for the thermal bath temperature, contingent on a defined waiting time ( tw ). Remarkably, the relevant parameter space is two-dimensional ( τ and tw ), with bath temperatures exerting no influence on the presence or absence of the Mpemba effect or on the relative strength of the Kovacs effect.
