Abstract:The long-standing issue of the nature of the critical line of lattice QCD with the Wilson quark action at finite-temperatures, defined to be the line of vanishing pion screening mass, and its relation to the line of finite-temperature chiral tansition is examined. Analytical and numerical evidence are presented that the critical line forms a cusp at a finite gauge coupling, and the line of chiral transition runs past the tip of the cusp without touching the critical line. Implications on the continuum limit and the flavor dependence of chiral transition are discussed.

Abstract:We use an alternative approach to study the quantum phase transition in a coupled cavity lattice at finite temperature. As an illustrative example, we investigate the behaviors of the trace distance and quantum phase transition in a Jaynes-Cummings lattice at finite temperature. It is found that the trace distance can be used to describe the critical point of the quantum phase transition at finite low temperatures and the critical points are sensitive to the atom-field interaction strength and the detuning factor. For non-equilibrium states, we demonstrate that the time evolution of the trace distance's maximum value is also a good indicator of the critical points. Moreover, we show that the scaling behavior of derivative of the trace distance at the critical points and the scaling rule are dependent on the external parameters of the Hamiltonian.
Hot QCD matter around the chiral crossover: a lattice study with $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions

Abstract:Using lattice QCD simulations with $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks and physical up, down and strange quark masses, we investigate the properties of thermal QCD matter at the temperatures $T=\{128,154,192\}\mathrm{MeV}$ with a fixed lattice spacing $a=0.064\mathrm{fm}$ and volume $V=(6.1\text{fm})^3$. We find that the pion quasiparticle, defined as the low-energy pole in the two-point function of the axial charge, becomes lighter as the temperature increases and give an argument based on hydrodynamics as to why the pole becomes purely diffusive above the chiral crossover. We study the thermal modification of the isovector vector spectral function using the Backus-Gilbert method, finding an enhancement at low energies and a depletion at energies around $1\mathrm{GeV}$.The analogous study of the axial-vector channel reveals a larger enhancement at energies below $1\mathrm{GeV}$, and we show that these findings are consistent with rigorous spectral sum rules. The difference between vector and axial-vector correlators, an order parameter for chiral symmetry, turns out to be overall suppressed by more than an order of magnitude at the crossover.

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of the chiral condensate in lattice QCD at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. The study was done using two flavors of light quarks and with a series of β and ma at the lattice size 24×122×6. The calculation was done in the Taylor expansion formalism. We are able to calculate the first and second order derivatives of ψψ in both isoscalar and isovector channels. With the first derivatives being small, we find that the second derivatives are sizable close to the phase transition and that the magnitude of ψψ decreases under the influence of finite chemical potential in both channels.

Analysis of Static Wilson Line Correlators from Lattice QCD at Finite Temperature with $T$-matrix Approach

Abstract:We employ a thermodynamic $T$-matrix approach to study Wilson line correlators (WLCs) for a static quark-antiquark pair within the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). By refining earlier determined input parameters, self-consistent $T$-matrix calculations can approximately reproduce the WLCs from 2+1-flavor lattice-QCD (lQCD) computations, while also satisfying constraints on the bulk medium from the QGP equation of state. The main difference from earlier results is a reduced screening in the input potential toward higher temperatures. When elaborating the consequences of this scenario on transport properties we find a more pronounced temperature dependence of the low-momentum relaxation rate of heavy quarks in the QGP. This, in particular, leads to a rather weak increase of the (temperature-scaled) spatial diffusion coefficient, which turns out to be in fair agreement with the most recent pertinent lQCD data.

Chemical potential dependence of the endpoint of first-order phase transition in heavy-quark region of finite-temperature lattice QCD

Abstract:We determine the location of the critical point where the first-order deconfining transition in the heavy-quark region turns into a crossover in finite-temperature and density lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of Wilson quarks. Combining a hopping parameter expansion (HPE) of the quark determinant with a reweighting method, we evaluate the chemical potential dependence of the critical point. By systematically calculating the coefficients of the hopping parameter expansion up to a high order of HPE at finite chemical potential, we find that the higher order terms are strongly correlated with the Polyakov loop, which is the leading-order term, on each configuration. Moreover, their complex phases themselves, which are important at finite density, are also found to be strongly correlated with the complex phase of the Polyakov loop. Using this property, we develop a method for estimating the critical point incorporating high-order terms from calculations with only low-order terms. We report that the first-order phase transition region in the heavy-quark region becomes narrower exponentially with increasing the chemical potential. Since the hopping parameter of the critical point decreases exponentially as the density increases, the sign problem does not become serious even when the density increases, and critical points can be evaluated up to high densities.

Abstract:We examine the axial U(1) symmetry near and above the finite temperature phase transition in two-flavor QCD using lattice QCD simulations. Although the axial U(1) symmetry is always violated by quantization, (i.e.) the chiral anomaly, the correlation functions may manifest effective restoration of the symmetry in the high temperature phase. We explicitly study this possibility by calculating the meson correlators as well as the Dirac operator spectral density near the critical point. Our numerical simulations are performed on a $16^3\times 8$ lattice with two flavors of dynamical quarks represented by the overlap fermion formalism. Chiral symmetry and its violation due to the axial anomaly is manifestly realized with this formulation, which is a prerequisite for the study of the effective restoration of the axial U(1) symmetry. In order to avoid discontinuity in the gauge configuration space, which occurs for the exactly chiral lattice fermions, the simulation is confined in a fixed topological sector. It induces finite volume effect, which is well described by a formula based on the Fourier transform from the $\theta$-vacua. We confirm this formula at finite temperature by calculating the topological susceptibility in the quenched theory. Our two flavor simulations show degeneracy of the meson correlators and a gap in the Dirac operator spectral density, which implies that the axial U(1) symmetry is effectively restored in the chirally symmetric phase.

Abstract:Based on a linear sigma model, we discuss the mixing between a quark condensate and a gluon condensate. It is shown that the linear sigma model will not be self-consistent if we switch off the mixing coupling between glueball and chiral fields. By introducing a proper mixing coupling, we realize the second-order phase transitions of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement. We further show that the critical temperature of chiral symmetry restoration could not be larger than the temperature of deconfinement phase transition in all possible parameter spaces of our model.

Abstract:We investigate the phase structure and the equation of state (EoS) for dense two-color QCD (QC 2 D) at low temperature ( T = 40 MeV, 32 4 lattice) for the purpose of extending our previous works [1, 2] at T = 80 MeV (16 4 lattice). Indeed, a rich phase structure below the pseudo-critical temperature T c as a function of quark chemical potential μ has been revealed, but finite volume effects in a high-density regime sometimes cause a wrong understanding. Therefore, it is important to investigate the temperature dependence down to zero temperature with large-volume simulations. By performing 32 4 simulations, we obtain essentially similar results to the previous ones, but we are now allowed to get a fine understanding of the phase structure via the temperature dependence. Most importantly, we find that the hadronic-matter phase, which is composed of thermally excited hadrons, shrinks with decreasing temperature and that the diquark condensate scales as ⟨ qq ⟩ ∝ μ 2 in the BCS phase, a property missing at T = 80 MeV. From careful analyses, furthermore, we confirm a tentative conclusion that the topological susceptibility is independent of μ . We also show the temperature dependence of the pressure, internal energy, and sound velocity as a function of μ . The pressure increases around the hadronic-superfluid phase transition more rapidly at the lower temperature, while the temperature dependence of the sound velocity is invisible. Breaking of the conformal bound is also confirmed thanks to the smaller statistical error.

Abstract:We extend to finite temperature the fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions (QPTs). This is done by resorting to the notion of mixed-state fidelity that allows one to compare two density matrices corresponding to two different thermal states. By exploiting the same concept we also propose a finite-temperature generalization of the Loschmidt echo. Explicit analytical expressions of these quantities are given for a class of quasi-free fermionic Hamiltonians. A numerical analysis is performed as well showing that the associated QPTs show their signatures in a finite range of temperatures.

Abstract:We investigate relations between the chiral susceptibility and axial $U(1)$ anomaly in lattice QCD at high temperatures. Employing the exactly chiral symmetric Dirac operator, we separate the purely axial $U(1)$ breaking effect in the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilites in a theoretically clean manner. Preliminary results for two-flavor lattice QCD near the critical temperature are presented.

Abstract:Within a range of fermion masses and taking into account the influence of the chemical potential on the boson propagator, the dependence of the chiral susceptibility on temperature and chemical potential is investigated to gain insight in the phase transition of QED(3). We show that, at high temperature, the system demonstrates a second-order phase transition characteristic in the chiral limit and illustrates a crossover beyond the chiral limit, while in the high density region it exhibits a first-order transition when the fermion mass is small but always reveals a crossover when the fermion mass exceeds a critical value m(c).

Abstract:The QCD axial anomaly, by coupling the chiral condensate and BCS pairing fields of quarks in dense matter, leads to a new critical point in the QCD phase diagram [1, 2], which at sufficiently low temperature may terminate the line of phase transitions between chirally broken hadronic matter and color superconducting quark matter. The critical point indicates that matter at low temperature should cross over smoothly from the hadronic to the quark phase, as suggested earlier on the basis of symmetry. We review here the arguments, based on a general Ginzburg–Landau effective Lagrangian, for the existence of the new critical point as well as discuss possible connections between the QCD phase structure and the BEC–BCS crossover in ultracold trapped atomic fermion systems at unitarity and implications for the presence of quark matter in neutron stars.

Abstract:Based on the analogy between the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model of chiral symmetry breaking and the BCS theory of superconductivity, we investigate the effect of $\bar q q$ pair fluctuations on the chiral phase transition. We include uncondensed $\bar q q$ pairs at finite temperature and chemical potential in a self-consistent T-matrix formalism, the so-called $G_0 G$ scheme. The pair fluctuations reduce significantly the critical temperature and make quarks massive above the critical temperature.

Abstract:We study fluctuations of conserved charges including baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness as well as the correlations among these conserved charges in the $2+1$ flavor Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature. The calculated results are compared with those obtained from recent lattice calculations performed with an improved staggered fermion action at two values of the lattice cutoff with almost physical up and down quark masses and a physical value for the strange quark mass. We find that our calculated results are well consistent with those obtained in lattice calculations except for some quantitative differences for fluctuations related with strange quarks. Our calculations indicate that there is a pronounced cusp in the ratio of the quartic to quadratic fluctuations of baryon number, i.e. ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{4}^{B}/{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{2}^{B}$, at the critical temperature during the phase transition, which confirms that ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{4}^{B}/{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{2}^{B}$ is a useful probe of the deconfinement and chiral phase transition.
Finite-temperature critical point of heavy-quark QCD on large lattices

Abstract:We study the finite-temperature critical point of QCD in the heavy-quark region by a scaling study of the Binder cumulant on large lattices. Extending our previous study at $N_t=4$, we perform simulations on $N_t=6$ and 8 lattices with spatial volumes up to the aspect ratio $LT=N_s/N_t=18$ and 15 ($N_s=108$ and 120), respectively, to determine the critical point in the thermodynamic limit with a high precision. To enable simulations with large spatial volumes, we adopt the hopping parameter expansion combined with a method to effectively incorporate high order terms of the expansion. The reliability of the method is confirmed by examining the effect of high order terms. Using the results of the critical point at $N_t=4$, 6, and 8, we also attempt a preliminary continuum extrapolation of the critical point in physical units.

Chiral QCD phase in equilibrium with Hadron Gas and the location of the critical point

Abstract:We develop a description of the equation of state of QCD matter with restored chiral symmetry, which is in thermal and chemical equilibrium with the hadronic phase. The hadron gas is described with thermodynamically consistent volume corrections. The chiral phase is composed of a set of few quark condensates, each of which corresponds to a family of hadrons with specific quark content. On the boundary between the two phases we apply the requirement of conservation of particle numbers per family. We use lattice calculations for temperatures below the transition curve to determine hadronic volumes. We find that the pion system plays decisive role in the shift of the transition from higher order (crossover) to first order. For four volume models we calculate the location of the critical point as function of critical temperature $T_c$ at vanishing baryon density. Particularly, if we additionally impose the equality between the densities of quarks contained in mesons and baryons, we find a critical point residing in the interval of baryon chemical potential $\mu_B \simeq$ 233-267 MeV and of temperature $T \simeq$ 153-158 MeV.
