Abstract:In this review I highlight the role played by spectrophotometric models in the study of galaxy evolution in distant clusters. I summarize the main achievements of the modeling of k+a spectra, the derivation of the star formation rate in emission line galaxies and the stellar ages of red cluster galaxies. The current knowledge of the dependence of the star formation histories on the galaxy morphology and luminosity is also presented.

Results are based on the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) - an ESO large programme aimed at the study of cluster structure and cluster galaxy evolution over a significant fraction of cosmic time - and are discussed in the framework of the current standard paradigm of structure formation.

Abstract:Galaxy clusters, which underwent a recent ($\leq3$ Gyr) major merger, offer a harsher environment due to the global hydrodynamical disturbance and the merger-shock heated ICM. However, the aftermath of such extreme cluster interactions on the member galaxy properties is not very well constrained. We explore the integrated star formation properties of galaxies through galaxy colours, as well as morphology buildup in three nearby ($0.04<z<0.07$) young ($\sim$0.6-1 Gyr) post-merger clusters -- A3667, A3376 and A168 -- and 7 relaxed clusters, to disentangle merger-induced post-processing signatures from the expected effects due to high-density cluster environments. Exploiting the optical spectroscopy and photometry from the OmegaWINGS survey, we find that post-merger clusters are evolved systems demonstrating uniform spiral fractions, uniform fraction of blue galaxies and constant scatter in the colour-magnitude relations, a regularity that is absent in dynamically relaxed clusters. While no clear merger-induced signatures were revealed in the global colours of galaxies, we conclude that different global star formation histories of dynamically relaxed clusters lead to considerable scatter in galaxy properties, resulting in the pre-merger cluster environment to potentially contaminate any merger-induced signal in galaxy properties. We discover red spirals to be common to both post-merger and relaxed clusters while post-merger clusters appear to host a non-negligible population of blue early-type galaxies. We propose that while such merging cluster systems absorb extra cosmic web populations hitherto not part of the original merging subclusters, a $\sim$ 1 Gyr timescale is possibly insufficient to result in changes in global colours and morphologies of galaxies.

Abstract:The well-known cluster of galaxies ZwCl0024+1652 at z $\sim$ 0.4, lacks an in-depth morphological classification of its central region. While previous studies provide a visual classification of a patched area, we used the public code called galaxy Support Vector Machine (galSVM) and HST/ACS data as well as WFP2 master catalogue to automatically classify all cluster members up to 1 Mpc. galSVM analyses galaxy morphologies through Support Vector Machine (SVM). From the 231 cluster galaxies, we classified 97 as early-types (ET) and 83 as late-types (LT). The remaining 51 stayed unclassified (or undecided, UD). By cross-matching our results with the existing visual classification, we found an agreement of 81%. In addition to previous Zwcl0024 morphological classifications, 121 of our galaxies were classified for the first time in this work. In addition, we tested the location of classified galaxies on the standard morphological diagrams, colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. Out of all cluster members, $\sim$20% are emission line galaxies (ELG), taking into account previous GLACE results. We have verified that the ET fraction is slightly higher near the cluster core and decreases with the clustercentric distance, while the opposite trend has been observed for LT galaxies. We found higher fraction of ET (54%) than LT (46%) throughout the analysed central region, as expected. In addition, we analysed the correlation between the five morphological parameters (Abraham concentration, Bershady-Concelice concentration, Asymmetry, Gini and M20 moment of light) and clustercentric distance, without finding a clear trend. Finally, as a result of our work, the morphological catalogue of 231 galaxies containing all the measured parameters and the final classification is available in the electronic form of this paper.

A Study on the Multicolour Evolution of Red Sequence Galaxy Populations: Insights from Hydrodynamical Simulations and Semi-Analytical Models

Abstract:By means of our own cosmological-hydrodynamical simulation and semi-analytical model we studied galaxy population properties in clusters and groups, spanning over 10 different bands from UV to NIR, and their evolution since redshift z=2. We compare our results in terms of galaxy red/blue fractions and luminous-to-faint ratio (LFR) on the Red Sequence (RS) with recent observational data reaching beyond z=1.5. Different selection criteria were tested in order to retrieve galaxies belonging to the RS: either by their quiescence degree measured from their specific SFR ("Dead Sequence"), or by their position in a colour-colour plane which is also a function of sSFR. In both cases, the colour cut and the limiting magnitude threshold were let evolving with redshift, in order to follow the natural shift of the characteristic luminosity in the LF. We find that the Butcher-Oemler effect is wavelength-dependent, with the fraction of blue galaxies increasing steeper in optical colours than in NIR. Besides, only when applying a lower limit in terms of fixed absolute magnitude, a steep BO effect can be reproduced, while the blue fraction results less evolving when selecting samples by stellar mass or an evolving magnitude limit. We then find that also the RS-LFR behaviour, highly debated in the literature, is strongly dependent on the galaxy selection function: in particular its very mild evolution recovered when measured in terms of stellar mass, is in agreement with values reported for some of the highest redshift confirmed (proto)clusters. As to differences through environments, we find that normal groups and (to a lesser extent) cluster outskirts present the highest values of both star forming fraction and LFR at low z, while fossil groups and cluster cores the lowest: this separation among groups begins after z 0.5, while earlier all group star forming properties are undistinguishable.

Abstract:We present a study of the evolution of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of clusters at $0.05 \leq z<0.35$ from the SDSS and WISE with halo masses in the range $6 \times 10^{13}M_\odot$ (massive groups) - $10^{15.5}M_\odot$ (Coma-like clusters). We analyse optical and infrared colours and stellar masses of BCGs as a function of the mass of their host haloes. We find that BCGs are mostly red and quiescent galaxies and that a minority ($\sim 9$\%) of them are star-forming. We find that the optical $g-r$ colours are consistent with those of red sequence galaxies at the same redshifts; however, we detect the presence of a tail of blue and mostly star-forming BCGs preferentially located in low-mass clusters and groups. Although the blue tail is dominated by star-forming galaxies, we find that star-forming BCGs may also have red $g-r$ colours, indicating dust-enshrouded star formation. The fraction of star-forming BCGs increases with redshift and decreases with cluster mass and BCG stellar mass. We find that cool-core clusters host both star-forming and quiescent BCGs; however, non cool-core clusters are dominated by quiescent BCGs. Star formation appears thus as the result of processes that depend on stellar mass, cluster mass and cooling state of the intra-cluster medium. Our results suggest no significant stellar mass growth at $z<0.35$, supporting the notion that BCGs had accreted most of their mass by $z = 0.35$. Overall we find a low (1\%) AGN fraction detected at IR wavelengths.

Abstract:We present new results of a program to study the detailed morphologies of galaxies in intermediate redshift clusters and hence understand the physical origin of the enhanced star formation in these environments at earlier epochs. Deep, high resolution imagery has been obtained of 3 rich clusters, AC103,AC118 & AC114 at z=0.31, using the WFPC2 on HST. For AC103 & AC118, single pointings covering a central 0.5x0.5Mpc have been obtained; for AC114, 4 pointings covering a 1.2x0.7Mpc area have been obtained, allowing the more outer regions of a distant cluster to be studied. Hubble types plus evidence for dynamical interactions and/or structural abnormalities have been determined visually for all galaxies down to R=22.25 in AC103 & AC118 and R=23.0 in AC114.We find the numbers of spirals (Sa-Sdm) in our clusters to be up to 4x higher than that seen in present-day clusters; only in the virialised core of our most massive regular cluster, AC114, do we see morphological fractions approaching those of the present epoch. Dynamical interactions are also widespread throughout the clusters with ~20% of members showing morphological evidence of this phenomenon. The highest incidence is amongst those blue members either undergoing a starburst or seen <0.5Gyr thereafter with the majority being involved in major mergers. These galaxies, however, are of modest luminosity (L~L*+1mag), destined to become dwarfs once they fade. Cluster members with ongoing star formation typical of nearby spirals are largely late Sb-Sdm Hubble types. Galaxies whose star formation ended 1-2Gyr prior to the epoch of observation are all normal early-type (S0-Sb) disk systems. The red H-delta strong galaxies are a mixture of E & S0 galaxies, consistent with them being old dormant systems which have undergone a secondary star formation episode.

Abstract:We study the colors and metallicities of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) and intracluster light (ICL) in galaxy groups and clusters, as predicted by a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, coupled with a set of high-resolution N-body simulations. The model assumes stellar stripping and violent relaxation processes during galaxy mergers to be the main channels for the formation of the ICL. We find that BCGs are more metal-rich and redder than the ICL, at all redshifts once the ICL starts to form (z similar to 1). In good agreement with several observed data, our model predicts negative radial metallicity and color gradients in the BCG+ICL system. By comparing the typical colors of the ICL with those of satellite galaxies, we find that the mass and metals in the ICL come from galaxies of different mass, depending on the redshift. Stripping of low-mass galaxies, 9 < logM(*) < 10, is the most important contributor in the early stages of ICL formation, but the bulk of the mass/metals contents are given by intermediate/massive galaxies, 10 < logM(*) < 11, at lower redshift. Our analysis supports the idea that stellar stripping is more important than galaxy mergers in building up the ICL, and highlights the importance of colors/metallicity measurements for understanding the formation and evolution of the ICL.

Abstract:The study of the evolution of the morphological distribution of galaxies in different environments can provide important information about the effects of the environment and the physical mechanisms responsible for the morphological transformations. As part of a complete analysis of the young cluster RXJ1257+4738 at z$\sim$0.9, we studied in this work the morphological properties of its galaxies. We used non-parametric methods of morphological classification, as implemented in the galSVM code. The classification with the applied method was possible even using ground-based observations: r'-band imaging from OSIRIS/GTC. We defined very conservative probability limits, taking into account the probability errors, in order to obtain a trustworthy classification. In this way we were able to classify about the 30% of all cluster members, and to separate between LT and ET galaxies. Additionally, when analysing the colour-magnitude diagram, we observed a significant population of blue ET galaxies between the classified ones. We discussed possible explanations for the finding of this population. Moreover, we studied different physical properties of LT, ET, and blue ET galaxies. They turn out to be comparable, with the exception of the stellar mass that shows that the red ET population is more massive. We also analysed the morphology-density and morphology-radius relations, observing that, only when considering the morphological separation between ET and LT galaxies, a mild classical behaviour is obtained. RXJ1257+4738 is a young galaxy cluster, showing a clumpy structure and being still in the process of formation, which could explain the lack of some of the standard morphological relations. This makes this cluster a very attractive case for obtaining the higher resolution data and for studying in more details the morphological properties of the entire cluster and relation with the environment.

Galaxy evolution in the high redshift, colour-selected cluster RzCS 052 at z=1.02

Abstract:We present deep I and z' imaging of the colour-selected cluster RzCS 052 and study the color-magnitude relation of this cluster, its scatter, the morphological distribution on the red sequence, the luminosity and stellar mass functions of red galaxies and the cluster blue fraction. We find that the stellar populations of early type galaxies in this cluster are uniformly old and that their luminosity function does not show any sign of evolution other than the passive evolution of their stellar populations. We rule out a significant contribution from mergers in the buildup of the red sequence of RzCS 052. The cluster has a large (~30%) blue fraction and and we infer that the evolution of the blue galaxies is faster than an exponentially declining star formation model and that these objects have probably experienced starburst episodes. Mergers are unlikely to be the driver of the observed colour evolution, because of the measured constancy of the mass function, as derived from near-infrared photometry of 32 clusters, including RzCS 052, presented in a related paper. Mechanisms with clustercentric radial dependent efficiencies are disfavored as well, because of the observed constant blue fraction with clustercentric distance.

Abstract:We investigated the color and morphology of optically selected galaxies in the region of clusters at z $\sim$ 1.2 near to the radio galaxy 3C 324 using archived data taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. The faint galaxies selected at the HST F702W band that contribute to the surface-density excess of the region have wide ranges of color, size, and morphology, which are not likely to be due to contamination by foreground galaxies. Namely, the rest-frame ultraviolet emission properties of the galaxies in the clusters are not very homogeneous; various amounts of star-formation activity may occur in a significant fraction of them. Although our analysis is purely statistical, we find that typical star-forming galaxies with blue colors have a relatively late-type morphology compared to the red quiescent population in the systems.
Supra-galactic Colour Patterns in Globular Cluster Systems

Abstract:An analysis of globular cluster systems associated with galaxies included in the Virgo and Fornax HST Advanced Camera Surveys reveals distinct (g-z) colour modulation patterns. These features appear on composite samples of globular clusters and, most evidently, in galaxies with absolute magnitudes Mg in the range from -20.2 to -19.2. These colour modulations are also detectable on some samples of globular clusters in the central galaxies NGC 1399 and NGC 4486 (and confirmed on data sets obtained with different instruments and photometric systems), as well as in other bright galaxies in these clusters. After discarding field contamination, photometric errors and statistical effects, we conclude that these supra-galactic colour patterns are real and reflect some previously unknown characteristic. These features suggest that the globular cluster formation process was not entirely stochastic but included a fraction of clusters that formed in a rather synchronized fashion over large spatial scales, and in a tentative time lapse of about 1.5 Gy at redshifts z between 2 and 4. We speculate that the putative mechanism leading to that synchronism may be associated with large scale feedback effects connected with violent star forming events and/or with super massive black holes.

Abstract:We use the largest homogeneous sample of globular clusters (GCs), drawn from the ACSVCS and ACSFCS, to investigate the color gradients of GC systems in 76 early-type galaxies. We find that most GC systems possess an obvious negative gradient in g-z color (bluer outwards). For GC systems displaying color bimodality, both metal-rich and metal-poor GC subpopulations present shallower but significant color gradients on average, and the mean gradients of these two subpopulations are of roughly equal strength. The FOV of ACS mainly restricts us to measuring the inner gradients of GC systems. These gradients, however, can introduce an aperture bias when measuring the mean colors of GC subpopulations from relatively narrow central pointings. Inferred corrections to previous work imply a reduced significance for the relation between the mean color of metal-poor GCs and their host galaxy luminosity. The GC color gradients also show a dependence with host galaxy mass where the gradiens are weakest at the ends of the mass spectrum--in massive galaxies and dwarf galaxies--and strongest in galaxies of intermediate mass, around a stellar mass of M_stellar~10^10M_sun. We also measure color gradients for field stars in the host galaxies. We find that GC color gradients are systematically steeper than field star color gradients, but the shape of the gradient-mass relation is the same for both. If gradients are caused by rapid dissipational collapse and weakened by merging, these color gradients support a picture where the inner GC systems of most intermediate-mass and massive galaxies formed early and rapidly with the most massive galaxies having experienced greater merging. The lack of strong gradients in the GC systems of dwarfs, which probably have not experienced many recent major mergers, suggests that low mass halos were inefficient at retaining and mixing metals during the epoch of GC formation.

Abstract:We study the significance of mergers in the quenching of star formation in galaxies at z~1 by examining their color-mass distributions for different morphology types. We perform two-dimensional light profile fits to GOODS iz images of ~5000 galaxies and X-ray selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosts in the CANDELS/GOODS-north and south fields in the redshift range 0.7<z<1.3. Distinguishing between bulge-dominated and disk-dominated morphologies, we find that disks and spheroids have distinct color-mass distributions, in agreement with studies at z~0. The smooth distribution across colors for the disk galaxies corresponds to a slow exhaustion of gas, with no fast quenching event. Meanwhile, blue spheroids most likely come from major mergers of star-forming disk galaxies, and the dearth of spheroids at intermediate green colors is suggestive of rapid quenching. The distribution of moderate luminosity X-ray AGN hosts is even across colors, in contrast, and we find similar numbers and distributions among the two morphology types with no apparent dependence on Eddington ratio. The high fraction of bulge-dominated galaxies that host an AGN in the blue cloud and green valley is consistent with the scenario in which the AGN is triggered after a major merger, and the host galaxy then quickly evolves into the green valley. This suggests AGN feedback may play a role in the quenching of star formation in the minority of galaxies that undergo major mergers.

Three main aspects are discussed: the differences in the stellar population ages of cluster ellipticals and S0 galaxies; the comparison of the spectroscopic properties of galaxies in distant clusters and in Coma; and the incidence and properties of faint post-starburst/post-starforming galaxies in the Coma cluster.

Abstract:The changes in colors across a galaxy are intimately connected to the galaxy's formation, growth, quenching history, and dust content. A particularly important epoch in the growth of galaxies is near z ∼ 2, often referred to as "cosmic noon," where galaxies on average reach the peak of their star formation. We study a population of 125 cluster galaxies at z ∼ 1.6 in three Hubble Space Telescope filters, F475W, F625W, and F160W, roughly corresponding to the rest-frame far-ultraviolet, near-ultraviolet, and r band, respectively. By comparing to a control sample of 200 field galaxies at similar redshift, we reveal clear, statistically significant differences in the overall spatially resolved colors and color gradients in galaxies across these two different environments. On average, cluster galaxies have redder ultraviolet colors in both the inner and outer regions bounded by r 50 , as well as an overall wider dispersion of outside-in color gradients. The presence of these observed differences, along with evidence from ancillary data from previous studies, strongly suggests that the environment drives these population-level color differences, by affecting the stellar populations and/or dust content.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Galaxies infalling into clusters undergo both star formation quenching and morphological transformation due to environmental effects. We investigate these processes and their time-scales using a local sample of 20 191 cluster and 11 674 field galaxies from Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By analysing morphology as a function of distance from the star formation main sequence, we show that environmental influence is especially pronounced for low-mass galaxies, which emerge from the green valley (GV) with early-type morphologies before their star formation is fully suppressed. Using the galaxies’ positions in the clusters’ projected phase space, we examine the evolution of blue cloud, GV, and red-sequence fractions as a function of time since infall. Interestingly, the GV fraction remains constant with time since infall, suggesting a balanced flow of galaxies in and out of this class. We estimate that galaxies less massive than $10^{10}\,\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$ spend approximately 0.4 Gyr in the GV. By comparing quenched and early-type populations, we provide further evidence for the ‘slow-then-rapid’ quenching model and suggest that it can also be applied to morphological transitions. Our results indicate that morphological transformation occurs at larger radii than complete star formation quenching. About 75 per cent of galaxies undergoing morphological transition in clusters are spirals evolving into S0s, suggesting that infalling galaxies retain their discs, while massive ellipticals are relics of early merger events. Finally, we show it takes approximately 2.5 and 1.2 Gyr after the delay time ($\sim 3.8 {\,\rm Gyr}$) for the population of low-mass galaxies in clusters to reach a 50 per cent threshold in quenched and early-type fraction, respectively. These findings suggest morphological transition precedes full star formation quenching, with both processes possibly being causally linked.

Abstract:Compact groups of galaxies (CGs) show members with morphological disturbances, mainly products of galaxy-galaxy interactions, thus making them ideal systems to study galaxy evolution, in high-density environment. To understand how this environment affects the properties of galaxies, we select a sample of 340 CGs in the Stripe 82 region, for a total of 1083 galaxies, and a sample of 2281 field galaxies as a control sample. By performing a multi-wavelength morphological fitting process using S-PLUS data, we divide our sample into early-type (ETG), late-type (LTG), and transition galaxies using the r-band Sérsic index and the colour (u-r). We find a bimodal distribution in the plane of the effective radius-Sérsic index, where a secondary "peculiar" galaxy population of smaller and more compact galaxies is found in CGs, which is not observed in the control sample. This indicates that galaxies are undergoing a morphological transformation in CGs. In addition, we find significant statistical differences in the distribution of specific Star Formation Rate (sSFR) when we compare both environments for LTGs and ETGs. We also find a higher fraction of quenched galaxies and a lower median sSFR in CGs than in the control sample, suggesting the existence of environmental effects favoring the cessation of star formation, regardless of galaxy type. Our results support the notion that CGs promote morphological and physical transformations, highlighting their potential as ideal systems for galaxy pre-processing.

Spatially Resolved Colors and Stellar Population Properties in Early-Type Galaxies at z ~ 1.5

Abstract:We present F850LP-F160W color gradients for 11 early-type galaxies (ETGs) at 1.0<z_spec<1.9. Significant negative F850LP-F160W color gradients have been detected in ~70% of our sample within the effective radius R_e, the remaining 30% having a flat color profile. Extending the analysis at R>R_e we have found that the fraction of high-z ETGs with negative F850LP-F160W color gradients rises up to 100%. For each galaxy, we investigate the origin of the radial color variation with a technique based on the matching of both the spatially resolved color and the global spectral energy distribution (SED) to predictions of composite stellar population models. In fact, we find that the age of the stellar populations is the only parameter whose radial variation alone can fully account for the observed color gradients and global SEDs for half of the galaxies in our sample (6 ETGs), without the need of radial variation of any other stellar population property. For four out of these six ETGs, a pure metallicity variation can also reproduce the detected color gradients. Nonetheless, a minor contribution to the observed color gradients from radial variation of star-formation time scale, abundance of low-to-high mass stars and dust cannot be completely ruled out. For the remaining half of the sample, our analysis suggests a more complex scenario whereby more properties of the stellar populations need to simultaneously vary to generate the observed color gradients and global SED. Our results show that, despite the young mean age of our galaxies (<3-4 Gyr), they already exhibit significant differences among their stellar content. We have discussed our results within the framework of the widest accepted scenarios of galaxy formation and conclude that none of them can satisfactorily account for the observed distribution of color gradients and for the spatially resolved content of high-z ETGs.

Abstract:We present new gas kinematic observations with the OSIRIS instrument at the GTC for galaxies in the Cl1604 cluster system at z=0.9. These observations together with a collection of other cluster samples at different epochs analyzed by our group are used to study the evolution of the Tully-Fisher, velocity-size and stellar mass-angular momentum relations in dense environments over cosmic time. We use 2D and 3D spectroscopy to analyze the kinematics of our cluster galaxies and extract their maximum rotation velocities (Vmax). Our methods are consistently applied to all our cluster samples which make them ideal for an evolutionary comparison. Up to redshift one, our cluster samples show evolutionary trends compatible with previous observational results in the field and in accordance with semianalytical models and hydrodynamical simulations concerning the Tully-Fisher and velocity-size relations. However, we find a factor 3 drop in disk sizes and an average B-band luminosity enhancement of 2 mag by z=1.5. We discuss the role that different cluster-specific interactions may play in producing this observational result. In addition, we find that our intermediate-to-high redshift cluster galaxies follow parallel sequences with respect to the local specific angular momentum-stellar mass relation, although displaying lower angular momentum values in comparison with field samples at similar redshifts. This can be understood by the stronger interacting nature of dense environments with respect to the field.
