Abstract:Both a free volume approach for Helmholtz free energy and theoretically based fitted formulas for a radial distribution function of hard-sphere solid are combined to describe the Helmholtz free energy of a solid phase with the hard-core attractive Yukawa (HCAY) potential in the framework of first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory. The corresponding Helmholtz free energy of the fluid phase is calculated from a recently proposed analytical expression based on the inverse temperature expansion and mean spherical approximation. The predicted solid-liquid phase transition for the HCAY system is in far better agreement with simulation than a previous perturbation weighted density approximation. The present formalism is employed as a predictor of protein solidification and metastable liquid-liquid coexistence of crystallizing protein solution, in satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data.
Isostructural Solid-Solid Transitions in Binary Asymmetrical Hard Sphere System: Based on Solvent-Mediated Potential

Abstract:Size dependence is imparted onto a modified bridge functional, adopted for a recently proposed semi-analytical hard sphere reference system theory for calculation of solvent-mediated potential (SMP). The SMP for two large hard sphere particles immersed in a small hard sphere solvent bath predicted by the present improved version is in satisfactory agreement with the prediction from a theoretically based fitting formula. Isostructural solid-solid transitions in the binary asymmetrical hard sphere system are investigated based on a single-component macrofluid approximation combined with the improved version. It is found that the isostructural solid-solid transition appears when size asymmetry increases. The limiting asymmetry size ratio is near 1/8. As the size asymmetry increases, critical density for both large and small hard sphere components for the fcc isostructural solid-solid transition increases and decreases, respectively.

Abstract:Recent experimental and theoretical results have shown the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition in isotropic systems, such as biological solutions and colloids, whose interaction can be represented via an effective potential with a repulsive soft-core and an attractive part. We investigate how the phase diagram of a schematic general isotropic system, interacting via a soft-core squared attractive potential, changes by varying the parameters of the potential. It has been shown that this potential has a phase diagram with a liquid-liquid phase transition in addition to the standard gas-liquid phase transition and that, for a short-range soft-core, the phase diagram resulting from molecular dynamics simulations can be interpreted through a modified van der Waals equation. Here we consider the case of soft-core ranges comparable with or larger than the hard-core diameter. Because an analysis using molecular dynamics simulations of such systems or potentials is too time-demanding, we adopt an integral equation approach in the hypernetted-chain approximation. Thus we can estimate how the temperature and density of both critical points depend on the potential's parameters for large soft-core ranges. The present results confirm and extend our previous analysis, showing that this potential has two fluid-fluid critical points that are well separated in temperature and in density only if there is a balance between the attractive and repulsive part of the potential. We find that for large soft-core ranges our results satisfy a simple relation between the potential's parameters.

Solid Phase Thermodynamic Perturbation Theory: Test and Application to Multiple Solid Phases.

Abstract:A simple procedure for the determination of hard sphere (HS) solid phase radial distribution function (rdf) is proposed, which, thanks to its physical foundation, allows for extension to other crystal structures besides the fcc structure. The validity of the procedure is confirmed by comparing (1) the predicted HS solid phase rdf's with corresponding simulation data and (2) the predicted non-HS solid phase Helmholtz free energy by the present solid phase first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT) whose numerical implementation depends on the HS solid phase rdf's as input, with the corresponding predictions also by the first-order TPT but the required HS solid phase rdf is given by an "exact" empirical simulation-fitted formula. The present solid phase first-order TPT predicts isostructural fcc-fcc transition of a hard core attractive Yukawa fluid, in very satisfactory agreement with the corresponding simulation data and is far more accurate than a recent thermodynamically consistent density functional perturbation theory. The present solid phase first-order TPT is employed to investigate multiple solid phases. It is found that a short-ranged potential, even if it is continuous and differentiable or is superimposed over a long-ranged potential, is sufficient to induce the multiple solid phases. When the potential range is short enough, not only isostructural fcc-fcc transition but also isostructural bcc-bcc transition, simple cubic (sc)-sc transition, or even fcc-bcc, fcc-sc, and bcc-sc transitions can be induced. Even triple point involving three solid phases becomes possible. The multiple solid phases can be stable or metastable depending on the potential parameters.
Investigation about Suitability of Hard Core Attractive Yukawa Potential As A Model Potential for Short-Range Attractive Interactions in Colloidal Dispersions

Abstract:An investigation is carried out about the suitability of mapping attractive short-range potential of colloidal systems onto both hard core attractive Yukawa (HCAY) potential and adhesive hard sphere (AH) potential for prediction of the solid–liquid (S–L) transition. Asakura and Oosawa's depletion potential of asymmetrical binary hard sphere mixture is taken as example of the attractive short-range potential. The S–L transition of the AH potential is based on a modified weighted density approximation, and that of the HCAY potential is based on first order thermodynamic perturbation theory for solid phase and a recently proposed analytical expression for the free energy of fluid phase. It is found that the second virial coefficient can be served as a tool for mapping between similar but different potentials for the case of S–L transition as well as for the case of fluid structure properties, and the HCAY potential is more suitable as a mapping potential than the AH potential.

Abstract:The quantum-classical crossover from the Fermi liquid towards the Wigner solid is numerically revisited, considering small square lattice models where electrons interact via a Coulomb U/r potential. We review a series of exact numerical results obtained in the presence of weak site disorder for fully polarized electrons (spinless fermions) and when the spin degrees of freedom are included. A novel intermediate regime between the Fermi system of weakly interacting localized particles and the correlated Wigner solid is obtained. A detailed analysis of the non disordered case shows that the intermediate ground state is a solid entangled with an excited liquid. For electrons in two dimensions, this raises the question of the existence of an unnoticed intermediate liquid-solid phase. Using the Coulomb energy to kinetic energy ratio r_s ~ U ~ n_s^{-1/2}, we discuss certain analogies between the numerical results obtained as a function of U for a few particles and the low temperature behaviors obtained as a function of the carrier density n_s in two dimensional electron gases. Notably, the new ``exotic state of matter'' numerically observed at low energies in small clusters occurs at the same intermediate ratios r_s than the unexpected low temperature metallic behavior characterizing dilute electron gases. The finite size effects in the limit of strong disorder are eventually studied in the last section, providing two numerical evidences that the weak coupling Fermi limit is delimited by a second order quantum phase transition when one increases U.

Abstract:A density functional theory is proposed for an inhomogeneous hard-core Yukawa (HCY) fluid based on Rosenfeld's perturbative method. The excess Helmholtz energy functional is derived from a modified fundamental measure theory for the hard-core repulsion and a quadratic functional Taylor expansion for the long-ranged attractive or repulsive interactions. To test the established theory, grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to simulate the density profiles of attractive and repulsive HCY fluid near a wall. Comparison with the results from the Monte Carlo simulations shows that the present density functional theory gives accurate density profiles for both attractive and repulsive HCY fluid near a wall. Both the present theory and simulations suggest that there is depletion for attractive HCY fluid at low temperature, but no depletion is found for repulsive HCY fluid. The calculated results indicate that the present density functional theory is better than those of the modified version of the Lovett-Mou-Buff-Wertheim and other density functional theories. The present theory is simple in form and computationally efficient. It predicts accurate radial distribution functions of both attractive and repulsive HCY fluid except for the repulsive case at high density, where the theory overestimates the radial distribution function in the vicinity of contact.

Abstract:We show anisotropy of the dipole interaction between magnetic atoms or polar molecules can stabilize new quantum phases in an optical lattice. Using a well controlled numerical method based on the tensor network algorithm, we calculate phase diagram of the resultant effective Hamiltonian in a two-dimensional square lattice - an anisotropic Hubbard model of hard-core bosons with attractive interaction in one direction and repulsive interaction in the other direction. Besides the conventional superfluid and the Mott insulator states, we find the striped and the checkerboard charge density wave states and the supersolid phase that interconnect the superfluid and the striped solid states. The transition to the supersolid phase has a mechanism different from the case of the soft-core Bose Hubbard model.

Abstract:We study the zero-temperature quantum phase transition between liquid and hcp solid He4. We use the variational method with a simple yet exchange-symmetric and fully explicit wave function. It is found that the optimized wave function undergoes spontaneous symmetry breaking and describes the quantum solidification of helium at 22 atm. The explicit form of the wave function allows us to consider various contributions to the phase transition. We find that the employed wave function is an excellent candidate for describing both a first-order quantum phase transition and the ground state of a Bose solid.

Abstract:Hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor repulsion are a prototypical example of a system with supersolid behavior on a lattice. We show that in this model the physical origin of the supersolid phase can be understood quantitatively and analytically by constructing quasiparticle excitations of defects that are moving on an ordered background. The location of the solid to supersolid phase transition line is predicted from the effective model for both positive and negative (frustrated) hopping parameters. For positive hopping parameters the calculations agree very accurately with numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The numerical results indicate that the supersolid to superfluid transition is first order.

Abstract:The determination of phase behavior and, in particular, the nature of phase transitions in two-dimensional systems is often clouded by finite size effects and by access to the appropriate thermodynamic regime. We address these issues using an alternative route to deriving the equation of state of a two-dimensional hard-core particle system, based on kinetic arguments and the Gibbs adsorption isotherm, by use of the random sequential adsorption with surface diffusion (RSAD) model. Insight into coexistence regions and phase transitions is obtained through direct visualization of the system at any fractional surface coverage via local bond orientation order. The analysis of the bond orientation correlation function for each individual configuration confirms that first-order phase transition occurs in a two-step liquid-hexatic-solid transition at high surface coverage.

Phase transitions in one-dimensional Riesz gases with long-range interaction

Abstract:We provide numerical evidence for the existence of phase transitions with respect to the temperature in the one-dimensional Riesz gases with non-singular pair interaction, that is particles on the line interacting via the potential $-|r|^{-s}$, where $s \in (-1, 0)$. Our numerics hint for the existence of two distinct phase transitions whose critical temperatures depend on $s$, namely a first transition which separates between a fluid and a quasisolid phase reminiscent of the Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, and a second transition below which freezing occurs and the system is in a solid phase. We determine the phase diagram with respect to $s$ and the temperature $T$, which we find to be consistent with the known (or expected) results on the 1D Coulomb gas ($s = -1$), known to be a solid at all temperature, and the Dyson log--gas ($s = 0$) which exhibits a BKT transition at $T = 1/2$ and which is believed to be a fluid at all positive temperature.

Metastable liquid-liquid phase transition in a single-component system with only one crystal phase and no density anomaly

Abstract:We investigate the phase behavior of a single-component system in 3 dimensions with spherically-symmetric, pairwise-additive, soft-core interactions with an attractive well at a long distance, a repulsive soft-core shoulder at an intermediate distance, and a hard-core repulsion at a short distance, similar to potentials used to describe liquid systems such as colloids, protein solutions, or liquid metals. We showed [Nature {\bf 409}, 692 (2001)] that, even with no evidences of the density anomaly, the phase diagram has two first-order fluid-fluid phase transitions, one ending in a gas--low-density liquid (LDL) critical point, and the other in a gas--high-density liquid (HDL) critical point, with a LDL-HDL phase transition at low temperatures. Here we use integral equation calculations to explore the 3-parameter space of the soft-core potential and we perform molecular dynamics simulations in the interesting region of parameters. For the equilibrium phase diagram we analyze the structure of the crystal phase and find that, within the considered range of densities, the structure is independent of the density. Then, we analyze in detail the fluid metastable phases and, by explicit thermodynamic calculation in the supercooled phase, we show the absence of the density anomaly. We suggest that this absence is related to the presence of only one stable crystal structure.

Abstract:Both a free volume approach for Helmholtz free energy and a theoretically-based fitted formula for radial distribution function (rdf) of hard sphere solid are employed to describe the Helmholtz free energy of Lennard-Jones solid in the framework of the first order thermodynamic perturbation theory, which also is employed for the uniform LennardJones fluid. The dividing of the Lennard-Jones potential follows from the WCA prescription, but the specification of the equivalent hard sphere diameter is determined by a simple iteration procedure devised originally for liquid state, but extended to solid state in the present study. Two hundred sheiks are used in the rdf to get an accurate perturbation term.The present approach is very accurate for the description of excess Helmholtz free energy of LJ solid, but shows some deviation from the simulation for excess Helmholtz free energy of uniform LJ fluid when the reduced temperature kT/e is higher then 5. The present approach is satisfactory for description of solid-liquid phase transition of the Lennard-Jones model.
Structural transitions in interacting lattice systems

Abstract:We consider two-dimensional systems of point particles located on rectangular lattices and interacting via pairwise potentials. The goal of this paper is to investigate the phase transitions (and their nature) at fixed density for the minimal energy of such systems. The 2D rectangle lattices we consider have an elementary cell of sides $a$ and $b$, the aspect ratio is defined as $\Delta=b/a$ and the inverse particle density $A = a b$; therefore, the "symmetric'' state with $\Delta=1$ corresponds to the square lattice and the "non-symmetric'' state to the rectangular lattice with $\Delta\ne 1$. For certain types of the interaction potential, by changing continuously the particle density, such lattice systems undertake at a specific value of the (inverse) particle density $A^*$ a structural transition from the symmetric to the non-symmetric state. The structural transition can be either of first order ($\Delta$ unstick from its symmetric value $\Delta=1$ discontinuously) or of second order ($\Delta$ unstick from $\Delta=1$ continuously); the first and second-order phase transitions are separated by the so-called tricritical point. We develop a general theory on how to determine the exact values of the transition densities and the location of the tricritical point. The general theory is applied to the double Yukawa and Yukawa-Coulomb potentials.

Abstract:The London ground-state energy formula as a function of number density $\rho $ for a system of boson hard spheres of diameter $c$ at zero temperature (corrected for the reduced mass of a pair of particles in a ``sphere-of-influence'' picture) generalized to describe fermion hard-sphere systems with four and two intrinsic degrees of freedom such as helium-three or neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter, respectively, is proposed as the crystalline energy branch for hard-sphere systems. For the fluid branch we use the well-known, exact, low-density equation-of-state expansions for many-boson and many-fermion systems, appropriately extrapolated to physical densities. Here, via a double-tangent construction the crystallization and melting densities for boson and fermion hard spheres are determined. They agree well with variational Monte Carlo, density-functional, and Green Function Monte Carlo calculations.

Solid-solid transition of the size-polydisperse hard-sphere system

Abstract:The solid-solid coexistence of a polydisperse hard sphere system is studied by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that for large enough polydispersity the solid-solid coexistence state is more stable than the single-phase solid. The two coexisting solids have different composition distributions but the same crystal structure. Moreover, there is evidence that the solid-solid transition terminates in a critical point as in the case of the fluid-fluid transition.

Abstract:The two-dimensional square lattice hard-core boson Hubbard model with near-neighbor interactions has a "checkerboard" charge density wave insulating phase at half filling and sufficiently large intersite repulsion. When doped, rather than forming a supersolid phase in which long-range charge density wave correlations coexist with a condensation of superfluid defects, the system instead phase separates. However, it is known that there are other lattice geometries and interaction patterns for which such coexistence takes place. In this paper we explore the possibility that anisotropic hopping or anisotropic near-neighbor repulsion might similarly stabilize the square lattice supersolid. By considering the charge density wave structure factor and superfluid density for different ratios of interaction strength and hybridization in the (x) over cap and (y) over cap directions, we conclude that phase separation still occurs.
Attraction Tames Two-Dimensional Melting: From Continuous to Discontinuous Transitions

Abstract:Two-dimensional systems may admit a hexatic phase and hexatic-liquid transitions of different natures. The determination of their phase diagrams proved challenging, and indeed, those of hard disks, hard regular polygons, and inverse power-law potentials have only recently been clarified. In this context, the role of attractive forces is currently speculative, despite their prevalence at both the molecular and colloidal scale. Here, we demonstrate, via numerical simulations, that attraction promotes a discontinuous melting scenario with no hexatic phase. At high-temperature, Lennard-Jones particles and attractive polygons follow the shape-dominated melting scenario observed in hard disks and hard polygons, respectively. Conversely, all systems melt via a first-order transition with no hexatic phase at low temperature, where attractive forces dominate. The intermediate temperature melting scenario is shape dependent. Our results suggest that, in colloidal experiments, the tunability of the strength of the attractive forces allows for the observation of different melting scenarios in the same system.
