Abstract:A new heterotic N=2 string with manifest target space supersymmetry is constructed by combining a conventional N=2 string in the right-moving sector and a Green-Schwarz-Berkovits type string in the left-moving sector. The corresponding sigma model is then obtained by turning on background fields for the massless excitations. We compute the beta functions and we partially check the OPE's of the superconformal algebra perturbatively in $\alpha'$, all in superspace. The resulting field equations describe N=1 self-dual supergravity.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Two-Dimensional Dilaton Gravity Black Hole Solution for $N=2$ Superstring Theory

Abstract:We show that $N=8$ {\it self-dual} supergravity theory, which is the consistent background for $N=2$ closed superstring theory in $2+2\-$dimensions, can accommodate the recently discovered two-dimensional dilaton gravity black hole solution, {\it via} appropriate dimensional reductions and truncations. Interestingly, the usual dilaton field in this set of solutions emerges from the scalar field in the ${\bf 70}\-$dimensional representation of an intrinsic global $SO(8)$ group. We also give a set of exact solutions, which can be interpreted as the dilaton field on Eguchi-Hanson gravitational instanton background, realized in an $N=1$ self-dual supergravity theory. This suggests that the $N=2$ superstring has a close (even closer) relationship with the two-dimensional black hole solution, which was originally developed in the context of bosonic string and $N=1$ superstring. Our result also provides supporting evidence for the conjecture that the $N=2$ superstring theory is the ``master theory'' of supersymmetric integrable systems in lower-dimensions.

Abstract:We find solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity for M5-branes wrapped on Riemann surfaces. These solutions preserve ${\cal N} = 2$ four-dimensional supersymmetry. They are dual to ${\cal N} = 2$ gauge theories, including non-conformal field theories. We work out the case of ${\cal N} = 2$ Yang-Mills in detail.

Stable Non-BPS Black Holes and Black Strings in Five Dimensions

Abstract:In this paper we study black hole and black string solutions in five dimensional N=2 supergravity theories arising from the compactification of M-theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular, we consider explicit examples of three parameter Calabi-Yau manifolds which are obtained as hypersurfaces in toric varieties. Using the attractor mechanism, we obtain BPS as well as non-BPS black holes in these compactified supergravity theories. We also consider the black string solutions in these models. We analyze the stability of these extremal black brane configurations by computing the recombination factor. We find multiple stable non-BPS attractor solutions in some of these models.

Real Supersymmetric Solutions of (3,2) Signature Five-Dimensional Supergravity

Abstract:We classify supersymmetric solutions of D=5 (3,2) signature supergravity with either vanishing or imaginary gauge coupling constant preserving the minimal N=2 supersymmetry. We prove that the geometry of such solutions is characterized by a nilpotent integrable endomorphism, and obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions on the fluxes imposed by supersymmetry. We also construct examples of supersymmetric domain wall solutions for which the nilpotent integrable endomorphism is associated with a Killing-Yano 2-form, as well as a new descendant preon solution which preserves N=6 supersymmetry. This is notable as such N=6 descendant solutions do not exist in the standard signature D=5 supergravity.

Abstract:The equation of motion of an extended object in spacetime reduces to an ordinary differential equation in the presence of symmetry. By properly defining of the symmetry with notion of cohomogeneity, we discuss the method for classifying all these extended objects. We carry out the classification for the strings in the five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space by the effective use of the local isomorphism between $\SO(4,2)$ and $\SU(2,2)$. We present a general method for solving the trajectory of the Nambu-Goto string and apply to a case obtained by the classification, thereby find a new solution which has properties unique to odd-dimensional anti-de Sitter spaces. The geometry of the solution is analized and found to be a timelike helicoid-like surface.

Abstract:We present a theory of N=2 chiral supergravity in (10+2)-dimensions. This formulation is similar to N=1 supergravity presented recently using null-vectors in 12D. In order to see the consistency of this theory, we perform a simple dimensional reduction to ten-dimensions, reproducing the type IIB chiral supergravity. We also show that our supergravity can be consistent background for super (2+2)-brane theory, satisfying fermionic invariance of the total action. Such supergravity theory without manifest Lorentz invariance had been predicted by the recent F-theory in twelve-dimensions.

Abstract:We investigate the microphysics of cosmic strings in Nonabelian gauge theories with N=1 supersymmetry. We give the vortex solutions in a specific example and demonstrate that fermionic superconductivity arises because of the couplings and interactions dictated by supersymmetry. We then use supersymmetry transformations to obtain the relevant fermionic zero modes and investigate the role of soft supersymmetry breaking on the existence and properties of the superconducting strings.

Abstract:N=2 conformal supergravity in five dimensions is constructed via a systematic off-shell reduction scheme from maximal conformal supergravity in six dimensions which is (2,0). The dimensional reduction of the (2,0) Weyl multiplet in six dimensions gives us the Weyl multiplet in five dimensions which is a dilaton Weyl multiplet as it has a dilaton scalar. The dimensional reduction of the (2,0) tensor multiplet in six dimensions gives us the N=2 vector multiplet in five dimensions coupled to conformal supergravity. We also comment on Nahm's classification regarding the non-existence of an N=2 superconformal algebra in five dimensions and why it does not contradict the existence of N=2 conformal supergravity in five dimensions that is constructed in this paper.

Cosmic strings in a generalized linear formulation of gauge field theory

Abstract:In this note we construct self-dual cosmic strings from a gauge field theory with a generalized linear formation of potential energy density. By integrating the Einstein equation, we obtain a nonlinear elliptic equation which is equal with the sources. We prove the existence of a solution in the broken symmetry category on the full plane and the multiple string solutions are valid under a sufficient condition imposed only on the total string number N. The technique of upper-lower solutions and the method of regularization are employed to show the existence of a solution when there are at least two distant string centers. When all the string centers are identical, fixed point theorem are used to study the properties of the nonlinear elliptic equation. Finally, We give the sharp asymptotic estimate for the solution at infinity.

Abstract:We construct two-dimensional supergravity theories endowed with a positive cosmological constant, that admit de Sitter vacua. We consider the cases of $\mathcal{N}=1$ as well as $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, and couple the supergravity to a superconformal field theory with the same amount of supersymmetry. Upon fixing a supersymmetric extension of the Weyl gauge, the theories are captured, at the quantum level, by supersymmetric extensions of timelike Liouville theory with $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry respectively. The theories exhibit good ultraviolet properties and are amenable to a variety of techniques such as systematic loop expansions and, in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ case, supersymmetric localization. Our constructions offer a novel path toward a precise treatment of the Euclidean gravitational path integral for de Sitter, and in turn, the Gibbons-Hawking entropy of the de Sitter horizon. We argue that the supersymmetric localization method applied to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory must receive contributions from boundary terms in configuration space. We also discuss how these theories overcome several obstructions that appear upon combining de Sitter space with supersymmetry.

Supersymmetric String Configurations in Ad$\mathbb{S}_5\times \mathbb{S}^5$

Abstract:In this work, we investigate off-shell supersymmetric string configurations in Euclidean Ad$\mathbb{S}_5\times \mathbb{S}^5$ background. By extending the Green-Schwarz supersymmetric equations using the pure spinor formalism, we demonstrate that while the solutions to the Green-Schwarz equations are necessarily minimal surfaces, the solutions to the extended equations form infinite-dimensional families, even with fixed boundary conditions, thus preventing direct derivations of exact results via supersymmetric localization. For concreteness, we have selected a supercharge that localizes the off-shell supersymmetric configurations to an Ad$\mathbb{S}_4 \times \mathbb{S}^2$ slice and observed that the corresponding action functional reduces to an integral of a two-form.

Abstract:We consider the flat supersymmetric D2 and anti-D2 system, which follows from ordinary noncommutative D2 anti-D2 branes by turning on an appropriate worldvolume electric field describing dissolved fundamental strings. We study the strings stretched between D2 and anti-D2 branes and show explicitly that the would-be tachyonic states become massless. We compute the string spectrum and clarify the induced noncommutativity on the worldvolume. The results are compared with the matrix theory description of the worldvolume gauge theories.

Abstract:We present an extended study of our previous work on an alternative five-dimensional N=2 supergravity theory that has a single antisymmetric tensor and a dilaton as a part of supergravity multiplet. The new fields are natural Neveu–Schwarz massless fields in superstring theory. Our total matter multiplets include n copies of vector multiplets forming the sigma-model coset space SO(n,1)/SO(n), and n′ copies of hypermultiplets forming the quaternionic Kähler manifold Sp(n′,1)/Sp(n′)×Sp(1). We complete the couplings of matter multiplets to supergravity with the gauged group of the type SO(2)×Sp(n′)×Sp(1)×H×[U(1)]n−p+1 for an arbitrary gauge group H with p≡ dimH+1, and the isotropy group Sp(n′)×Sp(1) of the coset Sp(n′,1)/Sp(n′)×Sp(1) formed by the hypermultiplets. We also describe the generalization to singular 5D spacetime as in the conventional formulation.

4D de Sitter from String Theory via 6D Supergravity

Abstract:We obtain de Sitter (dS) solutions from controlled string-theory constructions. We review how minimal gauged chiral 6D supergravity evades standard dS no-go theorems by having a positive scalar potential and describe the known 4D classical dS, AdS and Minkowski solutions. Grimm and collaborators recently found a related 6D supergravity by direct F-theory Calabi-Yau flux compactifications and we construct classical 4D maximally symmetric solutions for this 6D supergravity. These provide explicit solutions of the higher-dimensional field equations corresponding to dS, AdS and flat spacetimes in 4D, allowing interesting hierarchies of scales. We show how the singularities of these solutions are consistent with the back-reaction of two space-filling 4D brane-like sources situated within the extra dimensions and infer some of the properties of these sources using the formalism of point particle effective field theory (PPEFT), showing the sources are not vanilla objects like D branes. These tools relate the near-source asymptotic forms of bulk fields to source properties and have been extensively tested for more prosaic physical systems involving the back-reaction of small sources, such as the dependence of atomic energy levels on nuclear properties. We use it to determine the tension of the brane-like sources (that can be positive) and its derivatives. We verify that the solutions are in the weak coupling/large volume regime required to neglect quantum and $\alpha'$ effects.

Abstract:We present general solutions to the equations of motion for a superconducting relativistic chiral string that satisfy the unit magnitude constraint in terms of products of rotations. From this result we show how to construct a general family of odd harmonic superconducting chiral loops. We further generalise the product of rotations to an arbitrary number of dimensions.

Abstract:We study candidate vacuum configurations in ten-dimensional O(32) and E8 × E8 supergravity and superstring theory that have unbroken N = 1 supersymmetry in four dimensions. This condition permits only a few possibilities, all of which have vanishing cosmological constant. In the E8 × E8 case, one of these possibilities leads to a model that in four dimensions has an E6 gauge group with four standard generations of fermions.

Abstract:The full two-loop amplitudes for five massless states in Type II and Heterotic superstrings are constructed in terms of convergent integrals over the genus-two moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces and integrals of Green functions and Abelian differentials on the surface. The construction combines elements from the BRST cohomology of the pure spinor formulation and from chiral splitting with the help of loop momenta and homology invariance. The α ′ → 0 limit of the resulting superstring amplitude is shown to be in perfect agreement with the previously known amplitude computed in Type II supergravity. Investigations of the α ′ expansion of the Type II amplitude and comparisons with predictions from S-duality are relegated to a first companion paper. A construction from first principles in the RNS formulation of the genus-two amplitude with five external NS states is relegated to a second companion paper.
