Using values for the nonperturbative long-distance matrix elements that we extract from the cross-section fits, we make predictions for the polarizations of the quarkonium states. We obtain good agreement with measurements of the polarizations, with the exception of the CDF Run II measurement of the prompt $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ polarization, for which the agreement is only fair. In the predictions for the prompt-$J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ cross sections and polarizations, we take into account feeddown from the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{cJ}$ and $\ensuremath{\psi}(2S)$ states.

Perturbative QCD Fragmentation Functions for Production of P-wave Mesons with Charm and Beauty

Abstract:We calculate the leading order QCD fragmentation functions for the production of $P$-wave charmed beauty mesons. Long-distance effects are factored into two nonperturbative parameters: the derivative of the radial wavefunction at the origin and a second parameter related to the probability for a $(\bar b c)$ heavy quark pair that is produced in a color-octet $S$-wave state to form a color-singlet $P$-wave bound state. The four $2P$ states and those $3P$ states which lie below the $BD$ flavor threshold eventually all decay into the $1S$ ground state $B_c$ through hadronic cascades or by emitting photons. The total fragmentation probabilities for production of the $1S$ ground state $B_c$ from the cascades of the $2P$ and $3P$ states are about $1.7 \times 10^{-4}$ and $2.3 \times 10^{-4}$ respectively. Thus the direct production of the $P$-wave states via fragmentation may account for a significant fraction of the inclusive production rate of the $B_c$ at large transverse momentum in high energy colliders. Our analytic results for the $P$-wave fragmentation functions disagree with those obtained earlier in the literature.

Abstract:We report on some recent developments concerning parton-to-photon fragmentation functions. We briefly summarize the main theoretical concepts on which the currently available extractions of these fragmentation functions rely: evolution and the vector meson dominance model. We present comparisons of the available sets. We argue that the single-inclusive photon production process $pp\to\gamma X$ possesses only little sensitivity to the fragmentation contribution. Instead, the semi-inclusive process $pp\to(\text{jet}\,\gamma)X$, for which the photon is observed inside a fully reconstructed jet and is part of the jet, is shown to offer much potential for providing valuable new information.

Abstract:The hadronization of a high-energy parton is described by fragmentation functions which are introduced through QCD factorizations. While the hadronization mechanism per se remains uknown, fragmentation functions can still be investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative study mainly concentrates on extracting genuine features based on the operator definition in quantum field theory. The quantitative research focuses on describing a variety of experimental data employing the fragmentation function given by the parameterizations or model calculations. With the foundation of the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization, the QCD evolution of leading twist transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions has also been established. In addition, the universality of fragmentation functions has been proven, albeit model-dependently, so that it is possible to perform a global analysis of experimental data in different high-energy reactions. The collective efforts may eventually reveal important information hidden in the shadow of nonperturbative physics. This review covers the following topics: transverse-momentum-dependent factorization and the corresponding QCD evolution, spin-dependent fragmentation functions at leading and higher twists, several experimental measurements and corresponding phenomenological studies, and some model calculations.

Studies of $T_{cc}^+$ Decays and Transverse-Momentum-Dependent $J/ψ$ Production Using Effective Field Theory

Abstract:We describe the application of effective field theories for quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to two bound states involving heavy quarks: the $T_{cc}^+$ exotic meson and the $J/\psi$. We study the decay of the $T_{cc}^+$ in an effective theory for hadronic molecules, and find agreement with experiment. We also use the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism to derive the leading-order transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions (FFs) for quarks and gluons fragmenting to $J/\psi$. We then make use of these TMD FFs to compare the $J/\psi$ production mechanisms of light quark fragmentation and photon-gluon fusion, where the conclusions we draw can motivate future experiments at the Electron Ion Collider, shedding light on the inner structure of nucleons and testing ideas from NRQCD factorization. These results showcase the utility of effective field theories in explaining experiments and testing key concepts in nuclear/particle physics.

High-energy QCD dynamics from bottom flavor fragmentation at the Hi-Lumi LHC

Abstract:We study the inclusive production of hadrons with bottom flavor at the LHC and its luminosity upgrade. We describe the collinear fragmentation of singly $b$-flavored hadrons, $B$ mesons and $\Lambda_b$ baryons, via the KKSS07 determination of fragmentation functions, while for charmed $B$ mesons, $B_c(^1S_0)$ and $B_c(^3S_1)$ particles, we employ the novel ZCFW22 set, built on the basis of state-of-the-art nonrelativistic QCD inputs. We use the JETHAD multimodular working environment to analyze rapidity and transverse-momentum distributions for observables sensitive to the associated emission of two hadrons or a hadron-plus-jet system. Our reference formalism is the NLL/NLO$^+$ hybrid collinear and high-energy factorization, where the standard collinear description is improved by the inclusions of energy logarithms resummed up to the next-to-leading approximation and beyond. We provide a corroborating evidence that $b$-flavor emissions act as fair stabilizers of the high-energy resummation, thus serving as valuable tools for precision studies of high-energy QCD. As a bonus, we highlight that the predicted production-rate hierarchy between noncharmed $b$-hadrons and charmed $B_c(^1S_0)$ mesons is in line with recent LHCb estimates. This serves as simultaneous benchmark both for the hybrid factorization and for the single-parton fragmentation mechanism based on initial-scale inputs calculated via the nonrelativistic QCD effective theory.

Abstract:We calculate the lowest order charm and beauty parton distribution functions in and fragmentation functions into D and B mesons using the operator definitions of factorized perturbative QCD. In the vacuum, we find the leading corrections that arise from the structure of the final-state hadrons. Quark-antiquark potentials extracted from the lattice are employed to demonstrate the existence of open heavy flavor bound-state solutions in the QGP in the vicinity of the critical temperature. We provide first results for the in-medium modification of the heavy quark distribution and decay probabilities in a co-moving plasma. In an improved perturbative QCD description of heavy flavor dynamics in the thermal medium, we combine D and B meson formation and dissociation with parton-level charm and beauty quark quenching to obtain predictions for the heavy meson and non-photonic electron suppression in Cu+Cu and Pb+Pb collisions at RHIC and the LHC, respectively.

Abstract:The dominant production mechanism for (b) over bar c bound states with a large transverse momentum in high energy processes is the production of a high energy (b) over bar antiquark, followed by its fragmentation into the (b) over bar c state. We calculate the fragmentation functions for the production of the S-wave states B-c and B-c* to leading order in the QCD coupling constant. The fragmentation probabilities for (b) over bar --> B-c and (b) over bar --> B-c* are approximately 3.8 X 10(-4) and 5.4 X 10(-4), while those for c --> B-c and c --> B-c* are smaller by two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:The current status of global QCD analysis of parton distribution functions of the nucleon is reviewed. Recent progress made in determining various features of the parton structure of the nucleon, as well as outstanding open questions are discussed. These include: the small-$x$ and large-$x$ behavior of the partons, particularly the gluon; the differentiation of $u$ and $d$ quarks; the strangeness sea ($s+\bar{s}$), the strangeness asymmetry ($s-\bar{s}$); and the heavy quark distributions $c$ and $b$. Important issues about assessing the uncertainties of parton distributions and their physical predictions are considered. These developments are all critical for the physics programs of HERA II, Tevatron Run II, RHIC, and LHC.
Fragmentation production of J/psi and psi' at the Tevatron

Abstract:We present a calculation of the charm and gluon fragmentation contributions to inclusive $J/\psi$ and $\psi'$ production at large transverse momentum at the Tevatron. For $\psi$ production, we include both fragmentation directly into $\psi$ and fragmentation into $\chi_c$ followed by the radiative decay $\chi_c \to \psi + \gamma$. We find that fragmentation overwhelms the leading-order mechanisms for prompt $\psi$ production at large $p_T$, and that the dominant contributions come from fragmentation into $\chi_c$. Our results are consistent with recent data on $\psi$ production from the CDF and D0 experiments. In the case of prompt $\psi'$ production, the dominant mechanism at large $p_T$ is charm fragmentation into $\psi'$. We find serious disagreement between our theoretical predictions and recent $\psi'$ data from the Tevatron.

A global analysis of $π^0$, $K_S^0$ and $η$ fragmentation functions with BESIII data

Abstract:In this research, we conduct a global QCD analysis of fragmentation functions (FFs) for neutral pions ($\pi^0$), neutral kaons ($K_S^0$), and eta mesons ($\eta$), utilizing world data of single inclusive hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation involving the most recent BESIII data with low collision energy, to test the operational region of QCD collinear factorization for single inclusive hadron production. We found that the QCD-based analysis at next-to-next-to leading order in perturbative QCD with parameterized higher-twist effects can explain both existing high-energy world data and the BESIII new measurements, while the latter cannot be explained with existing FFs extracted with high-energy data. To investigate the higher-twist contributions to this discrepancy, a direct functional approach is employed, providing testing framework for characterizing the experimental results over a wide range of energy scales, from low to high, thus extending the classical theoretical models to the BESIII domain.

Abstract:We perform a comprehensive study within quantum chromodynamics (QCD) of dihadron observables in electron-positron annihilation, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions, including recent cross section data from Belle and azimuthal asymmetries from STAR. We extract simultaneously for the first time π+π− dihadron fragmentation functions (DiFFs) and the nucleon transversity distributions for up and down quarks as well as antiquarks. For the transversity distributions we impose their small- x asymptotic behavior and the Soffer bound. In addition, we utilize a new definition of DiFFs that has a number density interpretation to then calculate expectation values for the dihadron invariant mass and momentum fraction. Furthermore, we investigate the compatibility of our transversity results with those from single-hadron fragmentation (from a transverse momentum dependent/collinear twist-3 framework) and the nucleon tensor charges computed in lattice QCD. We find a universal nature to all of this available information. Heavy Quark Fragmentation in $e^+e^-$ Collisions to NNLO+NNLL Accuracy in Perturbative QCD

Abstract:Fragmentation of heavy quarks into heavy-flavoured hadrons receives both perturbative and non-perturbative contributions. We consider perturbative QCD corrections to heavy quark production in $e^+e^-$ collisions to next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD with next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic resummation of quasi-collinear and soft emissions. We study multiple matching schemes, and multiple regularisations of the soft resummation, and observe a significant dependence of the perturbative results on these ingredients, suggesting that NNLO+NNLL perturbative accuracy may not lead to real gains unless the interface with non-perturbative physics is properly analysed. We confirm previous evidence that $D^{*+}$ experimental data from CLEO/BELLE and from LEP are not reconcilable with perturbative predictions employing standard DGLAP evolution. We extract non-perturbative contributions from $e^+e^-$ experimental data for both $D$ and $B$ meson fragmentation. Such contributions can be used to predict heavy-quark fragmentation in other processes, e.g. DIS and proton-proton collisions.

Abstract:It has been proposed that the large cross sections for prompt $\psi$, $\psi'$, and $\chi_c$ production at the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar p$ collider can be explained by a dominant color-octet term in the fragmentation function for a gluon to split into quarkonium. We show that this mechanism makes testable predictions for double-quarkonium $\psi\psi$, $\psi\psi'$, $\psi\chi_c$, $\psi\Upsilon$ and $\psi\chi_b$ production, as well as for $W \psi$ production, using color-octet matrix elements previously determined from charmonium production data. The $\psi\psi$ signal would already be measurable at the Tevatron, while the $\psi\chi_c$ and $W\psi$ signals would be on the edge of present detectability.

Abstract:We update our extraction of parton-to-charged hadron fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), focusing on the wealth of data collected at the Large Hadron Collider over the past decade. We obtain an accurate description of single-inclusive processes involving unidentified charged hadrons produced at different rapidities and transverse momenta in proton-proton collisions in a wide range of center-of-mass system energies between 0.9 and 13 TeV, along with measurements performed in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron Collider in the past.
