Abstract:There have been several proposals for platforms supporting topological superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors, in order to make use of the larger superconducting gap and the expected robustness of Majorana zero modes towards perturbations. In particular, the iron-based materials offer relatively large Tc and nodeless energy gaps. In addition, atomically flat surfaces enable the engineering of defect structures and the subsequent measurement of spectroscopic properties to reveal topological aspects. From a theory perspective, a materials-specific description is challenging due to the correlated nature of the materials and complications arising from the multiband nature of the electronic structure. Here we include both aspects in realistic interacting models, and find that the correlations themselves can lead to local magnetic order close to linear potential scattering defects at the surface of the superconductor. Using a self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes framework in a real-space setup using a prototype electronic structure, we allow for arbitrary magnetic orders and show how a topological superconducting state emerges. The calculation of the topological invariant and the topological gap allows us to map out the phase diagram for the case of a linear chain of potential scatterers. While intrinsic spin-orbit coupling is not needed to enter the topological state in the presence of spin-spiral states, it enlarges the topological phase. We discuss the interplay of a triplet component of the superconducting order parameter and the spin spiral leading effectively to extended spin-orbit coupling terms, and connect our results to experimental efforts on the Fe(Se,Te) system. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.107.134503 ©2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:In this work, we present a topological characterization of superconductivity in a prototype electron fractionalization model for doped Mott insulators. In this model, spinons and holons are coupled via the mutual Chern-Simons gauge fields. We obtain a low-lying effective description of the collective current fluctuations by integrating out the matter fields, which replaces the conventional Ginzburg-Landau action to describe the generalized rigidity of superconductivity. The superconducting phase coherence is essentially characterized by a topological order parameter related to a Gaussian linking number, and an experiment is proposed to probe this topological property. We further show that a gauge-neutral fermionic mode can naturally emerge in this model, which behaves like a Bogoliubov quasiparticle.

Abstract:Topological quantum materials hold great promise for future technological applications. Their unique electronic properties, such as protected surface states and exotic quasiparticles, offer opportunities for designing novel electronic devices, spintronics, and quantum information processing. The origin of the interplay between various electronic orders in topological quantum materials, such as superconductivity and magnetism, remains unclear, particularly whether these electronic orders cooperate, compete, or simply coexist. Since the 2000s, the combination of topology and matter has sparked a tremendous surge of interest among theoreticians and experimentalists alike. Novel theoretical descriptions and predictions, as well as complex experimental setups confirming or refuting these theories, continuously appear in renowned journals. This review aims to provide conceptual tools to understand the fundamental concepts of this ever-growing field. Superconductivity and its historical development will serve as a second pillar alongside topological materials. While the primary focus will be on topological superconductors, other topological materials, such as topological insulators and topological semimetals, will also be explained phenomenologically.

Superconductivity in a Topological Lattice Model with Strong Repulsion

Abstract:The highly tunable nature of synthetic quantum materials -- both in the solid-state and cold atom contexts -- invites examining which microscopic ingredients aid in the realization of correlated phases of matter such as superconductors. Recent experimental advances in moiré materials suggest that unifying the features of the Fermi-Hubbard model and quantum Hall systems creates a fertile ground for the emergence of such phases. Here, we introduce a minimal 2D lattice model that incorporates exactly these features: time-reversal symmetry, band topology, and strong repulsive interactions. By using infinite cylinder density matrix renormalization group methods (cylinder iDMRG), we investigate the ground state phase diagram of this model. We find that it hosts an interaction-induced quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator and demonstrate that weakly hole-doping this state gives rise to a superconductor at a finite circumference, with indications that this behavior persists on larger cylinders. At the aforementioned circumference, the superconducting phase is surprisingly robust to perturbations including additional repulsive interactions in the pairing channel. By developing a technique to probe the superconducting gap function in iDMRG, we phenomenologically characterize the superconductor. Namely, we demonstrate that it is formed from the weak pairing of holes atop the QSH insulator. Furthermore, we determine the pairing symmetry of the superconductor, finding it to be $p$-wave -- reminiscent of the unconventional superconductivity reported in experiments on twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Motivated by this, we elucidate structural similarities and differences between our model and those of TBG in its chiral limit. Finally, to provide a more direct experimental realization, we detail an implementation of our Hamiltonian in a system of cold fermionic alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice.

Abstract:Topological superconductors, where the bulk state shows superconducting gap and Majorana fermions constitute gapless edge states, have become one of the most important topics in physical sciences. Majorana fermions are their own antiparticles andMajorana quasiparticles in a solid-state system obey non-Abelian statistics, and thus can be used for faulttolerant topological quantum computation. Due to both scientific and applicable values, plenty of effort has been made in searching for topological superconductors. The major effort is designing heterostructures composed of Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor-topological insulator or BCS superconductor–spin orbit coupling material, where the superconducting proximity effect makes the interface or junction become an effective topological superconductor [1–5]. Then, with applying magnetic field, the zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP), a typical signature of the Majorana-bound state, has been observed at the ends of nanowires or vortex cores by tunneling measurements [6–8]. Nevertheless, there is still a lot of debate over whether the ZBCP in these measurements is truly from theMajorana-bound state. Recent discovery of topological semimetals [9], such as topological 3D Dirac semimetals and Weyl semimetals, offers a new platform to look for and investigate topological superconductors if the materials can be superconducting. Differently from topological insulators [10,11], where only the surface state is topologically non-trivial and shows a linear energy-dispersion electronic structure, namely a Dirac cone structure [12], the bulk state of topological semimetals exhibits a topologically non-trivial Dirac or Weyl cone structure with relativistic quasiparticles [13,14]. In these topological materials, some intriguing quantum properties can be revealed, such as the discovery of log-periodic quantum oscillations [15]. Abstract:Recently, superconductivity has been observed in twisted WSe$_2$ moiré structures (Xia et al., <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.14784" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.14784">arXiv:2405.14784</a>; Guo et al., <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2406.03418" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.03418">arXiv:2406.03418</a>). Its transition temperature is high, reaching a few percent of the Fermi temperature scale. Here, we advance a mechanism for superconductivity based on the notion that electronic topology enables quantum fluctuations in a suitable regime of intermediate correlations. In this regime, the Coulomb interaction requires that an active topological flat band and nearby wider bands are considered together. Compact molecular orbitals arise, which experience quantum fluctuations through topology-dictated hybridization with the other molecular orbitals. The hybridization competes with the active flat band' natural tendency towards static electronic ordering, thereby weakening the latter; we link this effect with certain salient observations by experiments. Furthermore, the competition yields a quantum critical regime where quasiparticles are lost. The corresponding quantum critical fluctuations drive superconductivity. Broader implications and new connections among correlated materials platforms are discussed.

Topological superconductivity induced by spin-orbit coupling, perpendicular magnetic field and superlattice potential

Abstract:Topological superconductors support Majorana modes, which are quasiparticles that are their own antiparticles and which obey non-Abelian statistics in which successive exchanges of particles do not always commute. Here we investigate whether a two-dimensional superconductor with ordinary s-wave pairing can be rendered topological by the application of a strong magnetic field. To address this, we obtain the self-consistent solutions to the mean field Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, which are a large set of nonlinearly coupled equations, for electrons moving on a lattice. We find that the topological "quantum Hall superconductivity" is facilitated by a combination of spin-orbit coupling, which locks an electron's spin to its momentum as it moves through a material, and a coupling to an external periodic potential which gives a dispersion to the Landau levels and also distorts the Abrikosov lattice. We find that, for a range of parameters, the Landau levels broadened by the external periodic potential support topological superconductivity, which is typically accompanied by a lattice of "giant" $h/e$ vortices as opposed to the familiar lattice of $h/2e$ Abrikosov vortices. In the presence of a periodic potential, we find it necessary to use an ansatz for the pairing potential of the form $\Delta(\vec{r})e^{i2\vec{Q}\cdot\vec{r}}$ where $\Delta(\vec{r})$ has a periodicity commensurate with the periodic potential. However, despite this form of the pairing potential, the current in the ground state is zero. In the region of ordinary superconductivity, we typically find a lattice of dimers of $h/2e$ vortices. Our work suggests a realistic proposal for achieving topological superconductivity, as well as a helical order parameter and unusual Abrikosov lattices.

Abstract:We present a two dimensional model of superconductivity where bosonization of fermions is described by topological fermion-boson duality. The model solves the discrepancy between theoretical and empirical values of penetration depth and explains the appearence of quantized vortex lines in supercunductors in accord with cyclotron motion of supercunducting electrons.

Abstract:The search for topological superconductors has recently become a key issue in condensed matter physics, because of their possible relevance to provide a platform for Majorana bound states, non-Abelian statistics, and quantum computing. Here we propose a new scheme which links as directly as possible the experimental search to a material-based microscopic theory for topological superconductivity. For this, the analysis of scanning tunnelling microscopy, which typically uses a phenomenological ansatz for the superconductor gap functions, is elevated to a theory, where a multi-orbital functional renormalization group analysis allows for an unbiased microscopic determination of the material-dependent pairing potentials. The combined approach is highlighted for paradigmatic hexagonal systems, such as doped graphene and water-intercalated sodium cobaltates, where lattice symmetry and electronic correlations yield a propensity for a chiral singlet topological superconductor. We demonstrate that our microscopic material-oriented procedure is necessary to uniquely resolve a topological superconductor state.

Nematic, chiral and topological superconductivity in transition metal dichalcogenides

Abstract:We introduce and study a realistic model for superconductivity in twisted bilayer WSe$_{2}$, where electron pairing arises from spin-valley fluctuations in the weak-coupling regime. Our model comprises both the full continuum model moiré bandstructure and a short-ranged repulsive interaction. By calculating the spin-valley susceptibility, we identify a Fermi surface nesting feature near half-filling of the top-most moiré band, which induces significantly enhanced spin-valley fluctuations. We then analyze the dominant Kohn-Luttinger pairing instabilities due to these spin-valley fluctuations and show that the leading instability corresponds to a two-component order parameter, which can give rise to nematic, chiral and topological superconductivity. As our findings are asymptotically exact for small interaction strengths, they provide a viable starting point for future studies of superconductivity in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers.

Abstract:We investigate the three-dimensional, time-reversal invariant topological superconductors with generic interaction by their response to external fields. The first description is a gravitational topological field theory, which gives a $Z_2$ classification of topological superconductors, and predicts a half-quantized thermal Hall effect on the surface. The second description introduces a $s$-wave proximity pairing field on the surface, and the associated topological defects give an integer $Z$ classification of the topological superconductor phases. Generally, charge conserving, time reversal breaking fields probe the $Z_2$ sector, and charge conservation breaking and time reversal breaking fields probe the $Z$ sector of the interacting topological superconductor.
Topological versus conventional superconductivity in a Weyl semimetal: A microscopic approach

Abstract:Starting from a microscopic model for the particle-particle interactions in a Weyl semimetal, we analyzed the possibility for conventional as well as monopole Cooper pairing between quasiparticle excitations at the same (intra-nodal) or opposite (inter-nodal) Weyl nodes. We derived a coupled system of self-consistent BCS-like equations, where the angular dependence of the pairings is directly determined from the microscopic interaction symmetries. We studied the competition between conventional and monopole superconducting phases, thus obtaining explicitly the phase diagrams from the microscopic interaction model parameters. We determined the critical temperatures for both phases, and the low temperature critical behavior, including the specific heat, that we suggest as possible experimental probe for topological quantum criticality in Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:We study a two-dimensional model of an isolated narrow topological band at partial filling with local attractive interactions. Numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo calculations show that the ground state is a superconductor with a critical temperature that scales nearly linearly with the interaction strength. We also find a broad pseudogap regime at temperatures above the superconducting phase that exhibits strong pairing fluctuations and a tendency towards electronic phase separation; introducing a small nearest neighbor attraction suppresses superconductivity entirely and results in phase separation. We discuss the possible relevance of superconductivity in this unusual regime to the physics of flat band moiré materials, and as a route to designing higher temperature superconductors.

Anyon Superconductivity from Topological Criticality in a Hofstadter-Hubbard Model

Abstract:The identification of novel mechanisms for superconductivity is a longstanding goal in theoretical physics. In this work, we argue that the combination of repulsive interactions and high magnetic fields can generate electron pairing, phase coherence and superconductivity. Inspired by the large lattice constants of moiré materials, which make large flux per unit cell accessible at laboratory fields, we study the triangular lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette, where previous literature has argued that a chiral spin liquid separates a weak-coupling integer quantum Hall phase and a strong-coupling topologically-trivial Mott insulator. We argue that topological superconductivity emerges upon doping in the vicinity of the integer quantum Hall to chiral spin liquid transition. We employ exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods to examine this theoretical scenario and find that electronic pairing indeed occurs above the half-filled ground states not just near the putative critical point but over a remarkably broad range of coupling strengths on both sides of criticality. On the chiral spin liquid side, our results provide a concrete model realization of the storied mechanism of anyon superconductivity. Our study thus establishes a beyond-BCS mechanism for electron pairing in a well-controlled limit, relying crucially on the interplay between electron correlations and band topology.

Abstract:We investigate topological superconductivity in the Rashba-Hubbard model, describing heavy-atom superlattice and van der Waals materials with broken inversion. We focus in particular on fillings close to the van Hove singularities, where a large density of states enhances the superconducting transition temperature. To determine the topology of the superconducting gaps and to analyze the stability of their surface states in the presence of disorder and residual interactions, we employ an fRG+MFT approach, which combines the unbiased functional renormalization group (fRG) with a real-space mean-field theory (MFT). Our approach uncovers a cascade of topological superconducting states, including $A_1$ and $B_1$ pairings, whose wave functions are of dominant $p$- and $d$-wave character, respectively, as well as a time-reversal breaking $A_1 + i B_1$ pairing. While the $A_1$ and $B_1$ states have first order topology with helical and flat-band Majorana edge states, respectively, the $A_1 + i B_1$ pairing exhibits second-order topology with Majorana corner modes. We investigate the disorder stability of the bulk superconducting states, analyze interaction-induced instabilites of the edge states, and discuss implications for experimental systems.

Indications for Topological Physics in High-$T_c$ Materials

Abstract:Research on high-$T_c$ superconductors has generally not focused on analysis of the topological structure of electronic bands in these materials. In this article we collate and discuss several well-known experimental observables that signal that certain signatures of topology may be present. The topological signatures suggested by experiment include dimensional reduction, electronic transport determined by loop statistics, a winding number, Weyl fermions, and others. We suggest that topology, in a wider sense than band topology, may be key to the mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Abstract:Topological superconductors are novel classes of quantum condensed phases, characterized by topologically nontrivial structures of Cooper pairing states. On the surfaces of samples and in vortex cores of topological superconductors, Majorana fermions, which are particles identified with their own anti-particles, appear as Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The existence and stability of Majorana fermions are ensured by bulk topological invariants constrained by the symmetries of the systems. Majorana fermions in topological superconductors obey a new type of quantum statistics referred to as non-Abelian statistics, which is distinct from bose and fermi statistics, and can be utilized for application to topological quantum computation. Also, Majorana fermions give rise to various exotic phenomena such as "fractionalization", non-local correlation, and "teleportation". A pedagogical review of these subjects is presented. We also discuss interaction effects on topological classification of superconductors, and the basic properties of Weyl superconductors.

Topological superconductivity from repulsive interactions in twisted WSe$_2$

Abstract:The recent observation of superconductivity in twisted bilayer WSe$_2$ raises intriguing questions concerning the origin and the properties of superconducting states realized in bands with non-trivial topological properties and repulsive electron-electron interactions. Using a continuum band structure model, we analyze a mechanism for Coulomb interaction-driven superconductivity in twisted bilayers of WSe$_2$. We discuss the symmetries and the phenomenological properties of the resulting superconducting phases and their evolution with interlayer potential difference, tunable via an out of plane electric field. The pairing strength is a non-monotonic function of interlayer potential, being larger at intermediate values due to mixing of singlet and triplet pairing. In contrast, at larger interlayer potential, the pairing tendency is suppressed due to enhanced Coulomb repulsion. The superconducting state is chiral in a large regime of parameters and undergoes a transition to a nodal nematic superconductor at a critical potential difference. The chiral state, characterized by an intervalley-symmetric superposition of triplet and singlet pairs, is classified as a topological superconductor within the Altland-Zirnbauer class C. At zero interlayer potential difference, the superconducting state is instead of class D, which hosts Majorana zero modes, making it a promising candidate for applications in quantum computation.

Abstract:Despite intensive searches for topological superconductors, the realization of topological superconductivity remains under debate. Previous proposals for the topological $s$-wave, $p$-wave, and chiral $d$-wave superconductivity have both advantages and disadvantages. In this review, we discuss two-dimensional topological superconductivity based on the non-chiral $d$-wave superconductors. It is shown that the noncentrosymmetric $d$-wave superconductors become topological superconductors under an infinitesimal Zeeman field without fine-tuning of parameters. Floquet engineering for introducing the Zeeman field in a controllable way is also proposed. When the two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric superconductors are stacked to recover the global inversion symmetry, the field-induced parity transition may occur, and the high-field odd-parity superconducting state realizes various topological phases depending on the stacking structures. Two-dimensional heterostructures of strongly correlated electron systems, which have been developed by recent experiments, are proposed as a platform of the high-temperature topological superconductivity and the interplay of topology and strong correlations in superconductors.

Abstract:Abstract The key to unraveling the nature of high‐temperature superconductivity (HTS) lies in resolving the enigma of the pseudogap state. The pseudogap state in the underdoped region is a distinct thermodynamic phase characterized by nematicity, temperature‐quadratic resistive behavior, and magnetoelectric effects. Till present, a general description of the observed universal features of the pseudogap phase and their connection with HTS is lacking. The proposed work constructs a unifying effective field theory capturing all universal characteristics of HTS materials and explaining the observed phase diagram. The pseudogap state is established to be a phase where a charged magnetic monopole condensate confines Cooper pairs to form an oblique version of a superinsulator. The HTS phase diagram is dominated by a tricritical point at which the first order transition between a fundamental Cooper pair condensate and a charged magnetic monopole condensate merges with the continuous superconductor‐normal metal and superconductor‐pseudogap state phase transitions. The universality of the HTS phase diagram reflects a unique topological mechanism of competition between the magnetic monopole condensate, inherent to antiferromagnetic‐order‐induced Mott insulators and the Cooper pair condensate. The obtained results establish the topological nature of the HTS and provide a platform for devising materials with the enhanced superconducting transition temperature.
