Abstract:A Weyl semimetal is a three dimensional topological gapless phase. In the presence of strong enough disorder it undergoes a quantum transition towards a diffusive metal phase whose universality class depends on the range of disorder correlations. Similar to other quantum transitions driven by disorder, the critical wave functions at the semimetal-diffusive metal transition exhibit multifractality. Using renormalization group methods we study the corresponding multifractal spectrum as a function of the range of disorder correlations for generic disorder including random scalar and vector potentials. We also discuss the relation between the geometric fluctuations of critical wave functions and the broad distribution of the local density of states (DOS) at the transition. We derive a new scaling relation for the typical local DOS and argue that it holds for other disorder-driven transitions in which both the average and typical local DOS vanish on one side of the transition. As an illustration we apply it to the recently discussed unconventional quantum transition in disordered semiconductors with power-law dispersion relation near the band edge.

Generalized multifractality in 2D disordered systems of chiral symmetry classes

Abstract:We study generalized multifractality that characterizes eigenstate fluctuations and correlations in disordered systems of chiral symmetry classes AIII, BDI, and CII. By using the non-linear sigmamodel field theory, we construct pure-scaling composite operators and eigenfunction observables that satisfy Abelian fusion rules. The observables are labelled by two multi-indices $\lambda$, $\lambda'$ referring to two sublattices, at variance with other symmetry classes, where a single multi-index $\lambda$ (that can be viewed as a generalized version of a Young diagram) is needed. Further, we analyze Weyl symmetries of multifractal exponents, which are also peculiar in chiral classes, in view of a distinct root system associated with the sigma-model symmetric space. The analytical results are supported and complemented by numerical simulations that are performed for a 2D lattice Hamiltonian of class AIII, both in the metallic phase and at the Anderson transition. Both in the metallic phase and at the transition, the numerically obtained exponents satisfy Weyl symmetry relations, confirming that the sigma-model is the right theory of the problem. Furthermore, in the metallic phase, we observe the generalized parabolicity (proportionality to eigenvalues of the quadratic Casimir operator), as expected in the one-loop approximation. On the other hand, the generalized parabolicity is strongly violated at the metal-insulator transition, implying violation of local conformal invariance.

Abstract:The interplay between electron–electron interactions and weak localization (or anti-localization) phenomena in two-dimensional systems can significantly enhance the superconducting transition temperature. We develop the theory of quantum fluctuations within such multifractally enhanced superconducting states in thin films. In conditions of weak disorder, we employ the Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model to derive an effective action for the superconducting order parameter and the quasiclassical Green's function, meticulously accounting for the influence of quantum fluctuations. This effective action, applicable for interactions of any strength, reveals the critical role of well-known collective modes in a dirty superconductor, and its saddle-point analysis leads to modified Usadel and gap equations. These equations comprehensively incorporate the renormalizations stemming from the interplay between interactions and disorder, resulting in the non-trivial energy dependence of the gap function. Notably, our analysis establishes a direct relation between the self-consistent gap equation at the superconducting transition temperature and the known renormalization group equations for interaction parameters in the normal state.

Emergence of non-ergodic multifractal quantum states in geometrical fractals

Abstract:Eigenstate multifractality, a hallmark of non-interacting disordered metals which can potentially be observed in many-body localized states as well, is characterized by anomalous slow dynamics and appears relevant for many areas of quantum physics from measurement-driven systems to superconductivity. We propose a novel approach to achieve non-ergodic multifractal (NEM) states without disorder by iteratively introducing defects into a crystal lattice, reshaping it from a plain structure into fractal geometry. By comprehensive analysis of the Sierpiński gasket case, we find a robust evidence of the emergence of NEM states that go beyond the conventional classification of quantum states and designate new pathways for quantum transport studies. We discuss potential experimental signatures of these states.

Abstract:Local, or short-range, order in disordered alloys is an important and exciting phenomenon which is quantified in electron, X-ray and neutron scattering experiments. It is discussed in many excellent reviews and books, as well as in the multitude of original research papers. This relatively short review of the subject does not attempt to discuss all aspects of the problem of local correlations in alloys. In particular, we will not touch such issues as multiatom (cluster) interactions, static displacements and vibrations of alloy atoms, partially ordered, multicomponent or amorphous alloys. As a result, we will concentrate on the Hamiltonian traditional for the considered problem, that of the Ising model on a rigid ideal lattice with pair, but otherwise arbitrary (i.e., of any range) interatomic interactions. The central object of the paper is the pair correlation function of the corresponding dynamical variables of the model, the occupation numbers or spin variables, the Fourier transform of which is proportional to the intensity of diffuse scattering caused by atomic short-range order. The main aim is to show that the expression for this quantity has certain internal structure analogous, e.g., to that of the averaged Green's function used in the electronic theory of disordered alloys. This structure is independent of the approximation used for the quantitative description of correlations. As will be seen, this structure alone, without further specification of a particular theory of short-range order, allows us to see new possibilities in diffuse scattering, some of which have recently been observed experimentally.
Generalized surface multifractality in 2D disordered systems

Abstract:Recently, a concept of generalized multifractality, which characterizes fluctuations and correlations of critical eigenstates, was introduced and explored for all ten symmetry classes of disordered systems. Here, by using the non-linear sigma-model field theory, we extend the theory of generalized multifractality to boundaries of systems at criticality. Our numerical simulations on two-dimensional (2D) systems of symmetry classes A, C, and AII fully confirm the analytical predictions of pure-scaling observables and Weyl symmetry relations between critical exponents of surface generalized multifractality. This demonstrates validity of the non-linear sigma-model field theory for description of Anderson-localization critical phenomena not only in the bulk but also on the boundary. The critical exponents strongly violate generalized parabolicity, in analogy with earlier results for the bulk, corroborating the conclusion that the considered Anderson-localization critical points are not described by conformal field theories. We further derive relations between generalized surface multifractal spectra and linear combinations of Lyapunov exponents of a strip in quasi-one-dimensional geometry, which hold under assumption of invariance with respect to a logarithmic conformal map. Our numerics demonstrate that these relations hold with an excellent accuracy. Taken together, our results indicate an intriguing situation: the conformal invariance is broken but holds partially at critical points of Anderson localization.

Abstract:Long-range hoppings in quantum disordered systems are known to yield quantum multifractality, whose features can go beyond the characteristic properties associated with an Anderson transition. Indeed, critical dynamics of long-range quantum systems can exhibit anomalous dynamical behaviours distinct from those at the Anderson transition in finite dimensions. In this paper, we propose a phenomenological model of wave packet expansion in long-range hopping systems. We consider both their multifractal properties and the algebraic fat tails induced by the long-range hoppings. Using this model, we analytically derive the dynamics of moments and Inverse Participation Ratios of the time-evolving wave packets, in connection with the multifractal dimension of the system. To validate our predictions, we perform numerical simulations of a Floquet model that is analogous to the power law random banded matrix ensemble. Unlike the Anderson transition in finite dimensions, the dynamics of such systems cannot be adequately described by a single parameter scaling law that solely depends on time. Instead, it becomes crucial to establish scaling laws involving both the finite-size and the time. Explicit scaling laws for the observables under consideration are presented. Our findings are of considerable interest towards applications in the fields of many-body localization and Anderson localization on random graphs, where long-range effects arise due to the inherent topology of the Hilbert space.

Abstract:The wavefunctions of a disordered two-dimensional electron gas at the quantum-critical Anderson transition are predicted to exhibit multifractal scaling in their real space amplitude. We experimentally investigate the appearance of these characteristics in the spatially resolved local density of states of a two-dimensional mixed surface alloy Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111), by combining high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy with spin and angle-resolved inverse-photoemission experiments. Our detailed knowledge of the surface alloy electronic band structure, the exact lattice structure and the atomically resolved local density of states enables us to construct a realistic Anderson tight binding model of the mixed surface alloy, and to directly compare the measured local density of states characteristics with those from our model calculations. The statistical analyses of these two-dimensional local density of states maps reveal their log-normal distributions and multifractal scaling characteristics of the underlying wavefunctions with a finite anomalous scaling exponent. Finally, our experimental results confirm theoretical predictions of an exact scaling symmetry for Anderson quantum phase transitions in the Wigner-Dyson classes.
Correlated volumes for extended wavefunctions on a random-regular graph

Abstract:We analyze the ergodic properties of a metallic wavefunction for the Anderson model in a disordered random-regular graph with branching number $k=2.$ A few q-moments $I_q$ associated with the zero energy eigenvector are numerically computed up to sizes $N=4\times 10^6.$ We extract their corresponding fractal dimensions $D_q$ in the thermodynamic limit together with correlated volumes $N_q$ that control finite-size effects. At intermediate values of disorder $W,$ we obtain ergodicity $D_q=1$ for $q=1,2$ and correlation volumes that increase fast upon approaching the Anderson transition $\log(\log(N_q))\sim W.$ We then focus on the extraction of the volume $N_0$ associated with the typical value of the wavefunction $e^{<\log|\psi|^2>},$ which follows a similar tendency as the ones for $N_1$ or $N_2.$ Its value at intermediate disorders is close, but smaller, to the so-called ergodic volume previously found via the super-symmetric formalism and belief propagator algorithms. None of the computed correlated volumes shows a tendency to diverge up to disorders $W\approx 15$, specifically none with exponent $\nu=1/2$. Deeper in the metal, we characterize the crossover to system sizes much smaller than the first correlated volume $N_1\gg N.$ Once this crossover has taken place, we obtain evidence of a scaling in which the derivative of the first fractal dimension $D_1$ behaves critically with an exponent $\nu=1.$

A functional renormalization group approach to systems with long-range correlated disorder

Abstract:We studied the statics and dynamics of elastic manifolds in disordered media with long-range correlated disorder using functional renormalization group (FRG). We identified different universality classes and computed the critical exponents and universal amplitudes describing geometric and velocity-force characteristics. In contrast to uncorrelated disorder, the statistical tilt symmetry is broken resulting in a nontrivial response to a transverse tilting force. For instance, the vortex lattice in disordered superconductors shows a new glass phase whose properties interpolate between those of the Bragg and Bose glasses formed by pointlike and columnar disorder, respectively. Whereas there is no response in the Bose glass phase (transverse Meissner effect), the standard linear response expected in the Bragg-glass gets modified to a power law response in the presence of disorder correlations. We also studied the long distance properties of the O(N) spin system with random fields and random anisotropies correlated as 1/x^{d-sigma}. Using FRG we obtained the phase diagram in (d,sigma,N)-parameter space and computed the corresponding critical exponents. We found that below the lower critical dimension 4+sigma, there can exist two different types of quasi-long-range-order with zero order-parameter but infinite correlation length.

Signatures of infinite randomness in transport properties of disordered spin chains

Abstract:We study the spin transport properties of some disordered spin chains with a special focus on the distribution of the frequency-dependent spin conductivity. In the cases of interest here, the systems are governed by an effectively infinite disorder at low energies. A hallmark of this behavior is the wide discrepancy between the average and the typical values of some physical quantities, which are described by extremely broad distributions. We show that such is also the case of the spin conductivity, whose average value is metallic but whose typical one, the physically relevant quantity, is insulating. This solves the apparent contradiction between the prediction of a spin metallic phase of the spin-1/2 disordered XX chain and its known localized behavior (after a mapping to free fermions). Our results are based on analytical and numerical implementations of a strong-disorder renormalization group as well as exact diagonalization studies. We present our analyses in very general terms, valid for systems of any spin $S$ value, but the cases of $S=1/2$ and 1 are studied in greater detail.

Random free-fermion quantum spin chain with multi-spin interactions

Abstract:We study the effects of quenched disorder in a class of quantum chains with (p+1)-multispin interactions exhibiting a free fermionic spectrum, paying special attention to the case p=2. Depending if disorder couples to (i) all the couplings or just to (ii) some of them, we have two distinct physical scenarios. In case (i), we find that the transitions of the model are governed by a universal infinite-randomness critical point surrounded by quantum Griffiths phases similarly as happens to the random transverse-field Ising chain. In case (ii), we find that quenched disorder becomes an irrelevant perturbation: the clean critical behavior is stable and Griffiths phases are absent. Beyond the perturbative regime, disorder stabilizes a line of finite-randomness critical points (with nonuniversal critical exponents), that ends in a multicritical point of infinite-randomness type. In that case, quantum Griffiths phases also appear surrounding the finite-disorder transition point. We have characterized the correlation functions and the low-temperature thermodynamics of these chains. Our results are derived from a strong-disorder renormalization-group technique and from finite-size scaling analysis of the spectral gap computed exactly (up to sizes ~10^{7}) via an efficient new numerical method recently introduced in the literature [Phys. Rev. B 104, 174206 (2021)].

Abstract:The statistics of eigenfunction amplitudes are studied in mesoscopic disordered electron systems of finite size. The exact eigenspectrum and eigenstates are obtained by solving numerically Anderson Hamiltonian on a three-dimensional lattice for different strengths of disorder introduced either in the potential on-site energy (``diagonal'') or in the hopping integral (``off-diagonal''). The samples are characterized by the exact zero-temperature conductance computed using real-space Green function technique and related Landauer-type formula. The comparison of eigenstate statistics in two models of disorder shows sample-specific details which are not fully taken into account by the conductance, shape of the sample and dimensionality. The wave function amplitude distributions for the states belonging to different transport regimes within the same model are contrasted with each other as well as with universal predictions of random matrix theory valid in the infinite conductance limit.

Many-body dynamics in long-range hopping model in the presence of correlated and uncorrelated disorder

Abstract:Much have been learned about universal properties of entanglement entropy (EE) and participation ration (PR) for Anderson localization. We find a new sub-extensive scaling with system size of the above measures for algebraic localization as noticed in one-dimensional long-range hopping models in the presence of uncorrelated disorder. While the scaling exponent of EE seems to vary universally with the long distance localization exponent of single particle states (SPSs), PR does not show such university as it also depends on the short range correlations of SPSs. On the other hand, in presence of correlated disorder, an admixture of two species of SPSs (ergodic delocalized and non-ergodic multifractal or localized) are observed, which leads to extensive (sub-extensive) scaling of EE (PR). Considering typical many-body eigenstates, we obtain above results that are further corroborated with the asymptotic dynamics. Additionally, a finite time secondary slow growth in EE is witnessed only for correlated case while for uncorrelated case there exists only primary growth followed by the saturation. We believe that our findings from typical many-body eigenstate would remain unaltered even in the weakly interacting limit.

Abstract:Motivated by the interplay of Bethe-Ansatz integrability and localization in the Richardson model of superconductivity, we consider a time-reversal symmetry breaking deformation of this model, known as the Russian Doll Model (RDM), and implement diagonal on-site disorder. The localization and ergodicity-breaking properties of the single-particle spectrum are analyzed using a large-energy renormalization group (RG) over the momentum-space spectrum. Based on the above RG, we derive an effective Hamiltonian of the model, discover a fractal phase of non-ergodic delocalized states -- with the fractal dimension different from the paradigmatic Rosenzweig-Porter model -- and explain it in terms of the developed RG equations and the matrix-inversion trick.

Multifractality and statistical localization in highly heterogeneous random networks

Abstract:We consider highly heterogeneous random networks with symmetric interactions in the limit of high connectivity. A key feature of this system is that the spectral density of the corresponding ensemble exhibits a divergence within the bulk. We study the structure of the eigenvectors associated with this divergence and find that they are multifractal with the statistics of eigenvector elements matching those of the resolvent entries. The corresponding localization mechanism relies on the statistical properties of the nodes rather than on any spatial structure around a localization centre. This "statistical localization" mechanism is potentially relevant for explaining localization in different models that display singularities in the bulk of the spectrum of eigenvalues

Abstract:We analyze the spectral and transport properties of the interacting disordered Tavis-Cummings model at half excitation filling. We demonstrate that a Poissonian level statistics coexists with eigenfunctions that are multifractal (extended, but non-ergodic) in the Hilbert space, for all strengths of light-matter interactions. This is associated with a lack of thermalization for a local perturbation. We find that the bipartite entanglement entropy grows logarithmically with time, similarly to many-body localized systems, while the spin imbalance tends to zero for strong coupling, in analogy to ergodic phases. We show that these effects are due to the combination of finite interactions and integrability of the model. When a small integrability-breaking perturbation (nearest-neighbor hopping) is introduced, typical eigenfunctions become ergodic, seemingly turning the system into a near-perfect conductor, contrary to the single-excitation noninteracting case. We propose a realization of this model with cold atoms.

Abstract:We describe the nonconventional localization of the midband E=0 state in square and cubic finite-bipartite lattices with off-diagonal disorder by solving numerically the linear equations for the corresponding amplitudes. This state is shown to display multifractal fluctuations, having many sparse peaks, and by scaling the participation ratio we obtain its disorder-dependent fractal dimension D-2. A logarithmic average correlation function grows as g (r) similar to eta In r at distance r from the maximum amplitude and is consistent with a typical overall power-law decay \ psi (r)\ similar tor(-eta) where eta is proportional to the strength of off-diagonal disorder.

Abstract:We show that a non-Fermi liquid state of interacting electrons in two dimensions is stable in the presence of disorder and is a perfect conductor, provided the interactions are sufficiently strong. Otherwise, the disorder leads to localization as in the case of non-interacting electrons. This conclusion is established by examining the replica field theory in the weak disorder limit, but in the presence of arbitrary electron-electron interaction. Thus, a disordered two-dimensional metal is a perfect metal, but not a Fermi liquid.
