Abstract:We investigate the effect of quenched bond disorder on the two-dimensional three-color Ashkin-Teller model, which undergoes a first-order phase transition in the absence of impurities. This is one of the simplest and striking models in which quantitative numerical simulations can be carried out to investigate emergent criticality due to disorder rounding of first-order transition. Utilizing extensive cluster Monte Carlo simulations on large lattice sizes of up to $128 \times 128$ spins, each of which is represented by three colors taking values $\pm 1$, we show that the rounding of the first-order phase transition is an emergent criticality. We further calculate the correlation length critical exponent, $\nu$, and the magnetization critical exponent, $\beta$, from finite size scaling analysis. We find that the critical exponents, $\nu$ and $\beta$, change as the strength of disorder or the four-spin coupling varies, and we show that the critical exponents appear not to be in the Ising universality class. We know of no analytical approaches that can explain our non-perturbative results. However our results should inspire further work on this important problem, either numerical or analytical.

Spinodal Phase Separation in Liquid Films with Quenched Disorder

Abstract:We study spinodal phase separation in unstable thin liquid films on chemically disordered substrates via simulations of the thin-film equation. The disorder is characterized by immobile patches of varying size and Hamaker constant. The effect of disorder is pronounced in the early stages (amplification of fluctuations), remains during the intermediate stages and vanishes in the late stages (domain growth). These findings are in contrast to the well-known effects of quenched disorder in usual phase-separation processes, viz., the early stages remain undisturbed and domain growth is slowed down in the asymptotic regime. We also address the inverse problem of estimating disorder by thin-film experiments.

Abstract:We study the off-equilibrium critical phenomena across a hysteretic first-order transition in disordered athermal systems. The study focuses on the zero temperature random field Ising model (ZTRFIM) above the critical disorder for spatial dimensions d=2,3, and 4. We use Monte Carlo simulations to show that disorder suppresses critical slowing down in phase ordering time for finite-dimensional systems. The dynamic hysteresis scaling, the measure of explicit finite-time scaling, is used to subsequently quantify the critical slowing down. The scaling exponents in all dimensions increase with disorder strength and finally reach a stable value where the transformation is no longer critical. The associated critical behavior in the mean-field limit is very different, where the exponent values for various disorders in all dimensions are similar. The non-mean-field exponents asymptotically approach the mean-field value ( Υ≈2/3 ) with increase in dimensions. The results suggest that the critical features in the hysteretic metastable phase are controlled by inherent mean-field spinodal instability that gets blurred by disorder in low-dimension athermal systems. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.107.024103 ©2023 American Physical Society
Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Prostate: Improved Robustness With Stretched Exponential Modeling

Abstract:Purpose This study aimed to compare the intraclass correlation coefficients of parameters estimated with stretched exponential and biexponential diffusion models of in vivo diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the prostate. Methods After the institutional review board issued a waiver of informed consent for this Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act–compliant study, 25 patients with biopsy-proven prostate cancer underwent 3T endorectal MRI and diffusion-weighted MRI of the prostate at 10 b values (0, 45, 75, 105, 150, 225, 300, 600, 900, and 1200 s/mm2). The full set of b values was collected twice within a single acquisition. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated for intra-acquisition variability. From the biexponential model, the quantitative parameters diffusion coefficient (D), perfusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f) were estimated. From the stretched exponential model, the quantitative parameters Kohlrausch decay constant (DK) and alpha (&agr;) were estimated. Results For the 25 patient data sets, the average intraclass correlation coefficients for DK and &agr; were 95.8%, and 64.1%, respectively, whereas those for D, D*, and f were 84.4%, 25.3%, and 41.3%, respectively. Conclusions The stretched exponential diffusion model captures the nonlinear effects of intravoxel incoherent motion in the prostate. The parameters derived from this model are more reliable and reproducible than the parameters derived from the standard, widely used biexponential diffusion/perfusion model.
Critical quench dynamics of random quantum spin chains: ultra-slow relaxation from initial order and delayed ordering from initial disorder

Abstract:By means of free fermionic techniques combined with multiple precision arithmetic we study the time evolution of the average magnetization, m ¯ ( t ) , of the random transverse-field Ising chain after global quenches. We observe different relaxation behaviors for quenches starting from different initial states to the critical point. Starting from a fully ordered initial state, the relaxation is logarithmically slow described by m ¯ ( t ) ∼ ln a t , and in a finite sample of length L the average magnetization saturates at a size-dependent plateau m ¯ p ( L ) ∼ L − b ; here the two exponents satisfy the relation b / a = ψ = 1 / 2 . Starting from a fully disordered initial state, the magnetization stays at zero for a period of time until t = t d with ln t d ∼ L ψ and then starts to increase until it saturates to an asymptotic value m ¯ p ( L ) ∼ L − b ′ , with b ′ ≈ 1.5 . For both quenching protocols, finite-size scaling is satisfied in terms of the scaled variable ln t / L ψ . Furthermore, the distribution of long-time limiting values of the magnetization shows that the typical and the average values scale differently and the average is governed by rare events. The non-equilibrium dynamical behavior of the magnetization is explained through semi-classical theory.

Abstract:We use Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate generic scaling aspects of classical phase transitions approached through a quench (or annealing) protocol where the temperature changes as a function of time with velocity $v$. Using a generalized Kibble-Zurek ansatz, we demonstrate dynamic scaling for different types of stochastic dynamics (Metropolis, Swendsen-Wang, and Wolff) on Ising models in two and higher dimensions. We show that there are dual scaling functions governing the dynamic scaling, which together describe the scaling behavior in the entire velocity range $v \in [0, \infty)$. These functions have asymptotics corresponding to the adiabatic and diabatic limit, and close to these limits they are perturbative in $v$ and $1/v$, respectively. Away from their perturbative domains, both functions cross over into the same universal power-law scaling form governed by the static and dynamic critical exponents (as well as an exponent characterizing the quench protocol). As a by-product of the scaling studies, we obtain high-precision estimates of the dynamic exponent $z$ for the two-dimensional Ising model subject to the three variants of Monte Carlo dynamics; for single-spin Metropolis updates $z_M=2.1767(5)$, for Swendsen-Wang multi-cluster updates $z_{\rm SW}=0.297(3)$, and for Wolff single-cluster updates $z_{W}=0.30(2)$. For Wolff dynamics, we find an interesting behavior with a non-analytic break-down of the quasi-adiabatic and diabatic scaling, instead of the generic smooth cross-over described by a power law. We interpret this disconnect between the two scaling regimes as a dynamic phase transition of the Wolff algorithm, caused by an effective sudden loss of ergodicity at high velocity.

Quenched dynamics and pattern formation in clean and disordered Bogoliubov-de Gennes superconductors

Abstract:We study the quench dynamics of a two dimensional superconductor in a lattice of size up to $200\times 200$ employing the self-consistent time dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism. In the clean limit, the dynamics of the order parameter for short times, characterized by a fast exponential growth and an oscillatory pattern, agrees with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) prediction. However, unlike BCS, we observe for longer times an universal exponential decay of these time oscillations that we show explicitly to be induced by the full emergence of spatial inhomogeneities of the order parameter, even in the clean limit, characterized by the exponential growth of its variance. The addition of a weak disorder does not alter these results qualitatively. In this region, the spatial inhomogeneities rapidly develops into an intricate spatial structure consisting of ordered fragmented stripes in perpendicular directions where the order parameter is heavily suppressed especially in the central region. As the disorder strength increases, the fragmented stripes gradually turn into a square lattice of approximately circular spatial regions where the condensate is heavily suppressed. A further increase of disorder leads to the deformation and ultimate destruction of this lattice. We explore suitable settings for the experimental confirmation of these findings.

Abstract:The fermion disorder operator has been shown to reveal the entanglement information in 1D Luttinger liquids and 2D free and interacting Fermi and non-Fermi liquids emerging at quantum critical points(QCP). Here we study, by means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, the scaling behavior of disorder operator in correlated Dirac systems. We first demonstrate the logarithmic scaling behavior of the disorder operator at the Gross-Neveu (GN) chiral Ising and Heisenberg QCPs, where consistent conformal field theory (CFT) content of the GN-QCP in its coefficient is found. Then we study a 2D monopole free deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) realized between a quantum-spin Hall insulator and a superconductor. Our data point to negative values of the logarithmic coefficients such that the DQCP does not correspond to a unitary CFT. Density matrix renormalization group calculations of the disorder operator on a 1D DQCP model also detect emergent continuous symmetries.

Scaling of quantum discord in spin models

Abstract:We study the scaling of quantum discord (a measure of quantum correlation beyond entanglement) in spin models analytically and systematically. We find that at finite temperature the block scaling of quantum discord satisfies an area law for any two-local Hamiltonian. We show that generically and heuristically the two-site scaling of quantum discord is similar to that of correlation functions. In particular, at zero temperature it decays exponentially and polynomially in gapped and gapless (critical) systems, respectively; at finite temperature it decays exponentially in both gapped and gapless systems. We compute the two-site scaling of quantum discord in the XXZ chain, the XY chain (in a magnetic field), and the transverse field Ising chain at zero temperature.

Abstract:We analytically study the one-dimensional kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics in the presence of quenched impurities. We derive the evolution equations for the expectation value of spin and the equal-time pair correlation function. The scaling form of the structure factor is given by ${\mathrm{G}}_{\mathrm{k}}$(t)=(1-\ensuremath{\rho})${\mathrm{t}}^{1\mathrm{/}2}$g((1-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}^{2}$)${\mathrm{k}}^{2}$t,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}^{2}$t) with the impurity concentration \ensuremath{\rho}, and its scaling function is calculated at zero temperature. We also obtain the average pinned domain size at long time for quenches to T=0 in one dimension, and find that it scales inversely with impurity concentration for the small \ensuremath{\rho}.
Activated dynamic scaling in the random-field Ising model: a nonperturbative functional renormalization group approach

Abstract:The random-field Ising model shows extreme critical slowdown that has been described by activated dynamic scaling: the characteristic time for the relaxation to equilibrium diverges exponentially with the correlation length, $\ln \tau\sim \xi^\psi/T$ , with $\psi$ an \textit{a priori} unknown barrier exponent. Through a nonperturbative functional renormalization group, we show that for spatial dimensions $d$ less than a critical value $d_{DR} \simeq 5.1$, also associated with dimensional-reduction breakdown, $\psi=\theta$ with $\theta$ the temperature exponent near the zero-temperature fixed point that controls the critical behavior. For $d>d_{DR}$ on the other hand, $\psi=\theta-2\lambda$ where $\theta=2$ and $\lambda>0$ a new exponent. At the upper critical dimension $d=6$, $\lambda=1$ so that $\psi=0$, and activated scaling gives way to conventional scaling. We give a physical interpretation of the results in terms of collective events in real space, avalanches and droplets. We also propose a way to check the two regimes by computer simulations of long-range 1-$d$ systems.

Superdiffusion-like behavior in zero-temperature coarsening of the $d=3$ Ising model

Abstract:One key aspect of coarsening following a quench below the critical temperature is domain growth. For the non-conserved Ising model a power-law growth of domains of like spins with exponent $\alpha = 1/2$ is predicted. Including recent work, it was not possible to clearly observe this growth law in the special case of a zero-temperature quench in the three-dimensional model. Instead a slower growth with $\alpha<1/2$ was reported. We attempt to clarify this discrepancy by running large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of lattice sizes up to $L=2048$ employing an efficient GPU implementation. Indeed, at late times we measure domain sizes compatible with the expected growth law -- but surprisingly, at still later times domains even grow superdiffusively, i.e., with $\alpha > 1/2$. We argue that this new problem is possibly caused by sponge-like structures emerging at early times.

Abstract:We describe numerical simulations of the stochastic diffusion equation with a conserved charge. We focus on the dynamics in the vicinity of a critical point in the Ising universality class. The model we consider is expected to describe the critical dynamics near a possible QCD critical point if the coupling of the order parameter to the momentum density of the fluid can be neglected. The simulations are performed on a spatial lattice, and the time evolution is performed using a Metropolis algorithm. We determine the dynamical critical exponent $z\simeq 3.972(2)$, which agrees with predictions of the epsilon expansion. We also study non-equilibrium sweeps of the reduced temperature and observe approximate Kibble-Zurek scaling.

Abstract:With large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the nonsteady relaxation at the dynamic depinning transition in the two-dimensional Gaussian random-field Ising model. The dynamic scaling behavior is carefully analyzed, and the transition fields as well as static and dynamic exponents are accurately determined based on the short-time dynamic scaling form. Different from the usual assumption, two distinguished growth processes of spatial correlation lengths for the velocity and height of the domain wall are found. Thus, the universality class of the depinning transition is established, which significantly differs from that of the quenched disorder equation but agrees with that of the recent experiment as well as other simulations works. Under the influence of the mesoscopic time regime, the crossover from the second-order phase transition to the first-order one is confirmed in the weak-disorder regime, yielding an abnormal disorder-dependent nature of the criticality.

Dynamic scaling in vacancy-mediated disordering

Abstract:We consider the disordering dynamics of an interacting binary alloy with a small admixture of vacancies which mediate atom-atom exchanges. Starting from a perfectly phase-segregated state, the system is rapidly heated to a temperature in the disordered phase. A suitable disorder parameter, namely, the number of broken bonds, is monitored as a function of time. Using Monte Carlo simulations and a coarse-grained field theory, we show that the late stages of this process exhibit dynamic scaling, characterized by a set of scaling functions and exponents. We discuss the universality of these exponents and comment on some subtleties in the early stages of the disordering process.

Abstract:We study the effects of quenched disorder in a class of quantum chains with (p+1)-multispin interactions exhibiting a free fermionic spectrum, paying special attention to the case p=2. Depending if disorder couples to (i) all the couplings or just to (ii) some of them, we have two distinct physical scenarios. In case (i), we find that the transitions of the model are governed by a universal infinite-randomness critical point surrounded by quantum Griffiths phases similarly as happens to the random transverse-field Ising chain. In case (ii), we find that quenched disorder becomes an irrelevant perturbation: the clean critical behavior is stable and Griffiths phases are absent. Beyond the perturbative regime, disorder stabilizes a line of finite-randomness critical points (with nonuniversal critical exponents), that ends in a multicritical point of infinite-randomness type. In that case, quantum Griffiths phases also appear surrounding the finite-disorder transition point. We have characterized the correlation functions and the low-temperature thermodynamics of these chains. Our results are derived from a strong-disorder renormalization-group technique and from finite-size scaling analysis of the spectral gap computed exactly (up to sizes ~10^{7}) via an efficient new numerical method recently introduced in the literature [Phys. Rev. B 104, 174206 (2021)].

Coarsening in the Long-range Ising Model with Conserved Dynamics

Abstract:While the kinetics of domain growth, even for conserved order-parameter dynamics, is widely studied for short-range inter-particle interactions, systems having long-range interactions are receiving attention only recently. Here we present results, for such dynamics, from a Monte Carlo (MC) study of the two-dimensional long-range Ising model, with critical compositions of up and down spins. The order parameter in the MC simulations was conserved via the incorporation of the Kawasaki spin-exchange method. The simulation results for domain growth, following quenches of the homogeneous systems to temperatures below the critical values $T_c$, were analyzed via finite-size scaling and other advanced methods. The outcomes reveal that the growths follow power-laws, with the exponent having interesting dependence on the range of interaction. Quite interstingly, when the range is above a cut-off, the exponent, for any given range, changes from a larger value to a smaller one, during the evolution process. While the corresponding values at late times match with certain theoretical predictions for the conserved order-parameter dynamics, the ones at the early times appear surprisingly high, quite close to the theoretical values for the nonconserved case.

Abstract:We study a quasi-2D classical Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson effective field theory in the presence of quenched disorder in which incommensurate charge-density wave and superconducting orders are intertwined. The disorder precludes long-range charge-density wave order, but not superconducting or nematic order. We select three representative sets of input parameters and compute the corresponding charge-density wave structure factors using both large-$N$ techniques and classical Monte Carlo simulations. Where nematicity and superconductivity coexist at low temperature, the peak height of the charge-density wave structure factor decreases monotonically as a function of increasing temperature, unlike what is seen in X-ray experiments on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. Conversely, where the thermal evolution of the charge-density wave structure factor qualitatively agrees with experiments, the nematic correlation length, computed to one-loop order, is shorter than the charge-density wave correlation length.

Abstract:The Imry–Ma phenomenon, predicted in 1975 by Imry and Ma and rigorously established in 1989 by Aizenman and Wehr, states that first-order phase transitions of low-dimensional spin systems are 'rounded' by the addition of a quenched random field coupled to the quantity undergoing the transition. The phenomenon applies to a wide class of spin systems in dimensions and to spin systems possessing a continuous symmetry in dimensions . This work provides quantitative estimates for the Imry–Ma phenomenon: in a cubic domain of side length L , we study the effect of the boundary conditions on the spatial and thermal average of the quantity coupled to the random field. We show that the boundary effect diminishes at least as fast as an inverse power of in general two-dimensional spin systems. For systems possessing a continuous symmetry, we show that the boundary effect diminishes at least as fast as an inverse power of L in two and three dimensions and at least as fast as an inverse power of in four dimensions. Finally, we establish a partial uniqueness results for translation-covariant Gibbs states, and prove that, for almost every realization of the random field, all such states must agree on the thermally-averaged value of the quantity coupled to the random field. Specific models of interest for the obtained results include the random-field q -state Potts model, the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model, and the random-field spin O ( n ) models.
