Abstract:We develop the theory of ``conformal twists'' of superconformal field theories in dimensions 3 to 6, extending the well-known analysis of twists for supersymmetric theories. The conformal twists describe all possible inequivalent choices of a nilpotent element in the superconformal algebra. Such twists can give rise to interesting subalgebras and protected sectors of operators, with the Donaldson--Witten topological field theory and the vertex operator algebras of 4-dimensional N=2 SCFTs being prominent examples. We work mostly with the complexified superconformal algebras, unless explicitly stated otherwise; real forms of the superconformal algebra may have important physical implications, but we leave these subtleties to future work. To obtain mathematical precision, we explain how to extract vertex algebras and E_n algebras from a twisted superconformal field theory using factorization algebras.

Abstract:We describe the topological A and B twists of 3d theories of hypermultiplets gauged by vector multiplets as certain deformations of the holomorphic–topological ( HT ) twist of those theories, utilizing the twisted superfields of Aganagic–Costello–Vafa–McNamara describing HT -twisted 3d theories. We rederive many known results from this perspective, including state spaces on Riemann surfaces, deformations induced by flavor symmetries, the boundary VOAs of Costello–Gaiotto, and the category of line operators as proposed by Costello–Dimofte–Gaiotto–Hilburn–Yoo. Along the way, we show how the secondary product of local operators in the holomorphic–topological twist is related to the secondary product in the fully topological twist.

Non-semisimple topological field theory and $\widehat{Z}$-invariants from $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$

Abstract:We construct three dimensional non-semisimple topological field theories from the unrolled quantum group of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. More precisely, the quantum group depends on a root of unity $q=e^{\frac{2 \pi \sqrt{-1}}{r}}$, where $r$ is a positive integer greater than $2$, and the construction applies when $r$ is not congruent to $4$ modulo $8$. The algebraic result which underlies the construction is the existence of a relative modular structure on the non-finite, non-semisimple category of weight modules for the quantum group. We prove a Verlinde formula which allows for the computation of dimensions and Euler characteristics of topological field theory state spaces of unmarked surfaces. When $r$ is congruent to $\pm 1$ or $\pm 2$ modulo $8$, we relate the resulting $3$-manifold invariants with physicists' $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. Finally, we establish a relation between $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ and $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$ which was conjectured in the physics literature.

Topological Twisting of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ Supersymmetric Field Theories

Abstract:We discuss what topological data must be provided to define topologically twisted partition functions of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories. The original example of Donaldson-Witten theory depends only on the diffeomorphism type of the spacetime and 't Hooft fluxes (characteristic classes of background gerbe connections, a.k.a. "one-form symmetry connections.") The example of $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ theories shows that, in general, the twisted partition functions depend on further topological data. We describe topological twisting for general four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories and argue that the topological partition functions depend on (a): the diffeomorphism type of the spacetime, (b): the characteristic classes of background gerbe connections and (c): a "generalized spin-c structure," a concept we introduce and define. The main ideas are illustrated with both Lagrangian theories and class $\mathcal{S}$ theories. In the case of class $\mathcal{S}$ theories of $A_1$ type, we note that the different $S$-duality orbits of a theory associated with a fixed UV curve $C_{g,n}$ can have different topological data.

Twisted eleven-dimensional supergravity

Abstract:We construct a fully interacting holomorphic/topological theory in eleven dimensions that is defined on products of Calabi-Yau fivefolds with real one-manifolds. The theory describes a particular deformation of the cotangent bundle to the moduli space of Calabi-Yau structures on the fivefold. Its field content matches the holomorphic (or minimal) twist of the eleven-dimensional supergravity multiplet recently computed by the second two authors, and we offer numerous consistency checks showing that the interactions correctly describe interacting twisted eleven-dimensional supergravity at the perturbative level. We prove that the global symmetry algebra of our model on flat space is an $L_\infty$ central extension of the infinite-dimensional simple exceptional super Lie algebra $E(5,10)$, following a recent suggestion of Cederwall in the context of the relevant pure spinor model. Twists of superconformal algebras map to the fields of our model on the complement of a stack of M2 or M5 branes, laying the groundwork for a fully holomorphic version of twisted holography in this context.

Abstract:Given a supermanifold equipped with an odd distribution of maximal dimension and constant symbol, we construct the formal moduli problem of deformations of the distribution. This moduli problem is described by a local super dg Lie algebra that provides both a resolution of the structure-preserving vector fields on superspace and a derived enhancement of superconformal symmetry. Applying our construction in standard physical examples returns the conformal supergravity multiplet in every known example, in any dimension and with any amount of supersymmetry$\unicode{x2014}$whether or not a superconformal algebra exists. We discuss new examples related to twisted supergravity, higher Virasoro algebras, and exceptional super Lie algebras. The compatibility of our techniques with twisting also leads to a computation of every twist of the stress tensor multiplet of a superconformal theory, including universal operator product expansions. Our approach uses a derived model for the space of functions constant along the distribution, which is applicable even when the distribution is non-involutive; we construct other natural multiplets, such as Kähler differentials, that appear naturally through this lens on superspace geometry.

Abstract:We perform a topological-holomorphic twist of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theory on a four-manifold of the form $M_4=\Sigma_1 \times \Sigma_2$ with Riemann surfaces $\Sigma_{1,2}$, and unravel the mathematical implications of its physics. In particular, we consider different linear combinations of the resulting scalar supercharges under $S$-duality, where this will allow us to derive novel topological and holomorphic invariants of $M_4$ and their Langlands duals. As the twisted theory can be topological along $\Sigma_1$ whence we can dimensionally reduce it to 2d, via the effective sigma-model on $\Sigma_2$, we can also relate these 4d invariants and their Langlands duals to the mirror symmetry of Higgs bundles and that of quasi-topological strings described by the sheaf of chiral differential operators. As an offshoot, we would be able to obtain a fundamental understanding from 4d gauge theory, why chiral differential operators are purely perturbative objects.

Topological twists of massive SQCD, Part I

Abstract:We consider topological twists of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD with gauge group SU(2) and $N_f\leq 3$ fundamental hypermultiplets. The twists are labelled by a choice of background fluxes for the flavour group, which provides an infinite family of topological partition functions. In this Part I, we demonstrate that in the presence of such fluxes the theories can be formulated for arbitrary gauge bundles on a compact four-manifold. Moreover, we consider arbitrary masses for the hypermultiplets, which introduce new intricacies for the evaluation of the low-energy path integral on the Coulomb branch. We develop techniques for the evaluation of these path integrals. In the forthcoming Part II, we will deal with the explicit evaluation.

Abstract:We consider $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal gauge theories in four dimensions. We explain how these quiver gauge theories arise as low-energy worldvolume theories of D3-branes on orientifolds. Then, we examine their associated chiral algebras, and propose novel examples of twisted holographic dualities arising in the large-N limit. These dualities involve topological strings in the bulk, which is a Calabi-Yau threefold taking the form $\text{SL}_2 \mathbb{C} / \Gamma$.

Unravelling the Holomorphic Twist: Central Charges

Abstract:The holomorphic twist provides a powerful framework to study minimally protected sectors in supersymmetric quantum field theories. We investigate the algebraic structure underlying the holomorphic twist of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ superconformal field theories in four dimensions. In particular, in holomorphically twisted theories the flavour and conformal symmetry algebras are enhanced to infinite-dimensional higher Kac Moody and higher Virasoro symmetry algebras respectively. We explicitly compute the binary and ternary $\lambda$-brackets and clarify their relation with the underlying infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra. Doing so we show that the central extensions of said symmetry algebras precisely encode the conformal anomalies $a$ and $c$ as well as the flavour central charges of the physical four-dimensional theory. This parallels the familiar story in two dimensions where the conformal anomaly $c$ is encoded in the central extension of the Virasoro algebra.

Abstract:In this paper a topological theory of gravity is studied on a four-manifold using the formalism of Capovilla {\sl et al}. We show that it is fact equivalent to Anselmi and Fre's topological gravity using the topological symmetries. Using this formalism gives us a new way to study topological gravity and the intersection theory of gravitational instantons if the (3+1) decomposition with respect to local coordinates is performed.

Abstract:We provide a new construction of superfield collinear twist-$2$ operators as infinite-dimensional, irreducible representations of the collinear superconformal algebra in $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories. As an application, we realize the above representations in terms of free superfields, in a manifestly gauge-invariant and supersymmetric-covariant fashion, in the zero coupling limit of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. This realization makes manifest their mixing and renormalization properties at one loop. We also extend the techniques in [1-4] to a large class of free superconformal field theories in the superspace formalism. Specifically, we compute the generating functional of superfield twist-2 operators in $\mathcal{N}=1$ SU($N$) SYM theory in the zero coupling limit. We also work out in a closed form the corresponding asymptotic renormalization-group improved generating functional in Euclidean superspace. The latter is relevant for the search of the yet-to-come non-perturbative solution of large-$N$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ SU($N$) SYM theory.

Vertex Operator Algebras and Topologically Twisted Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

Abstract:We consider several topologically twisted Chern-Simons-matter theories and propose boundary VOAs whose module categories should model the category of line operators of the 3d bulk. Our main examples come from the topological $A$ and $B$ twists of the exotic $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories of Gaiotto-Witten, but we show that there is a topological "$A$-twist" for a much larger class of $\mathcal{N}\neq4$ theories. We illustrate a particular example of this new class of theories that admits the $p=2$ singlet VOA $\mathfrak{M}(2)$ on its boundary and comment on its relation to the $\psi \to \infty$ limit of the Gaiotto-Rap{\v c}{á}k corner VOA $Y_{1,1,0}[\psi]$.

Restricted representations of the twisted $N=2$ superconformal algebra

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a large class of new simple modules over the twisted $N=2$ superconformal algebra. These new simple modules are restricted modules based on the simple modules over certain finite-dimensional solvable Lie superalgebras, including various versions of Whittaker modules. We elaborate that they are also the twisted modules for the universal $N=2$ superconformal vertex algebra. On the other hand, we give an explicit characterization of the simple restricted modules over the twisted $N=2$ superconformal algebra $\mathcal{T}$ under the condition that $T_t$ in $\mathcal{T}$ acts injectively for some $t\in \frac{1}{2}+\Z_+$.

Abstract:We show that a Hamiltonian reduction of affine Lie superalgebras having bosonic simple roots (such as $OSp(1|4)$) ``does'' produce supersymmetric Toda models, with superconformal symmetry being nonlinearly realised for those fields of the Toda system which are related to the bosonic simple roots of the superalgebra. A fermionic $b-c$ system of conformal spin $(3/2,-1/2)$ is a natural ingredient of such models.

Abstract:We develop representation theoretic techniques to construct three dimensional non-semisimple topological quantum field theories which model homologically truncated topological B-twists of abelian Gaiotto-Witten theory with linear matter. Our constructions are based on relative modular structures on the category of weight modules over an unrolled quantization of a Lie superalgebra. The Lie superalgebra, originally defined by Gaiotto and Witten, is associated to a complex symplectic representation of a metric abelian Lie algebra. The physical theories we model admit alternative realizations as Chern-Simons-Rozansky-Witten theories and supergroup Chern-Simons theories and include as particular examples global forms of $\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1)$-Chern-Simons theory and toral Chern-Simons theory. Fundamental to our approach is the systematic incorporation of non-genuine line operators which source flat connections for the topological flavour symmetry of the theory.

Abstract:We give general expressions for singular vectors of the N=2 superconformal algebra in the form of {\it monomials} in the continued operators by which the universal enveloping algebra of N=2 is extended. We then show how the algebraic relations satisfied by the continued operators can be used to transform the monomials into the standard Verma-module expressions. Our construction is based on continuing the extremal diagrams of N=2 Verma modules to the states satisfying the twisted \hw{} conditions with complex twists. It allows us to establish recursion relations between singular vectors of different series and at different levels. Thus, the N=2 singular vectors can be generated from a smaller set of the so-called topological singular vectors, which are distinguished by being in a 1:1 correspondence with singular vectors in affine sl(2) Verma modules. The method of `continued products' of fermions is a counterpart of the method of complex powers used in the constructions of singular vectors for affine Lie algebras.
