Abstract:Based on single-walled CNT, inspired by weaving operation, mechanical and impacting properties of a new proposed carbon nanotube woven film (CNWF) are systemically investigated via molecular dynamic simulations. From the tensile simulations of CNWF, it is found that CNWF are anisotropic in the axial and transverse directions. In the axial direction, similar to single CNT, CNWF possess extremely high gravimetric tensile strength and gravimetric Young's modulus. However, along the transverse direction, the gravimetric tensile strength and gravimetric Young's modulus of CNWF are nearly 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of single CNT, while CNWF possess super high stretchability which is up to 1228.18%. On the other hand, from the results of impacting simulations, the impact resistance of CNWF is extremely high and could be efficiently tuned by controlling the tensile strain of CNWF. Furthermore, it is found that CNWF could sustain the simultaneous impact of many projectiles with different sizes and selectively filter out projectiles by changing corresponding tensile strain. Therefore, CNWF has great application potential in intercepting the space debris. This work provides in-depth understanding on the mechanical and impact properties of CNWF and brings perceptive insights into the fabrication of strong and multifunctional CNT-based weaving structures.
