Abstract:A tunable dual-frequency metamaterial graphene polarization converter in the infrared range is put forward in this paper. The proposed converter is made up of 3 layers—the bottom gold layer, the middle silicon dioxide layer and the upper graphene layer. The simulated results show that the polarization converter can simultaneously work at two resonant frequencies of 36.82 and 41.38 THz. The polarization conversion rates are up to 0.9992 at 36.82 THz and 0.9969 at 41.38 THz under the certain normal condition when Fermi energy is given to 1.0 eV, showing the high efficiency of the polarization converter. Moreover, the converter shows its stable working performance under the change of the incident angle and the geometrical size. Meanwhile, without varying the nanostructure, the resonant frequencies can be flexibly adjusted by controlling the Fermi energy. The superior performance of the proposed graphene polarization converter indicates a broad prospect that a large number of applications such as infrared imaging sensors, modulators, switches, photonic and biochemical sensors, light harvesting, thermal detection and electromagnetic energy converter will apply it.

Abstract:Graphene has shown potential in terahertz (THz) polarization modulation due to highly tunable optoelectronic properties, fast photoelectric response, and ease of integration. However, the performance of polarization converters based on graphene metasurfaces is often limited by the achievable carrier mobility of large-area graphene. In this paper, a flexible and tunable broadband transmissive THz cross-polarization converter based on a hybrid metal-graphene metasurface is proposed. It is composed of two metal grating layers with a graphene-loaded 45-degree antenna array sandwiched between them. The THz response of the antenna can be tuned by adjusting the graphene Fermi level, which further alters the cross-polarization conversion efficiency (CPCE) of the device. The average CPCE can be continuously tuned from 80.3% to 4.5% within a broadband from 0.6 to 2.0 THz, and the average modulation depth of the whole band is 94.2%. The mechanisms of this highly efficient polarization conversion and dynamic modulation are explained with a transfer matrix method and an equivalent circuit model. Furthermore, the proposed structure has a low requirement on the graphene mobility, which is only 500 cm 2 /(V·s) here. This work provides a new approach to highly efficient tunable cross-polarization conversion over a broadband in THz, which will promote the application of graphene-based polarization modulators in THz sensing, imaging and communication.

Abstract:In this study, a broadband tunable reflective graphene-based linear polarization converter (GLPC) is proposed based on the graphene-ionic liquid-ITO structure (GIIS) integrated with a periodic double split ring resonator (DSRR) in the millimeter-wave regime. The tuning characteristic of the designed GLPC is analyzed using full-wave simulations and the equivalent circuit model method (ECM), which is based on multi-section transmission lines. There is a good agreement between ECM and simulation results. A comprehensive physical mechanism for the proposed broadband GLPC is then achieved by analyzing the surface current distributions. After manufacturing, the GLPC prototype's co- and cross-polarized reflection coefficients were measured using various bias voltages. The reflectivity can be controlled from -4.5 to -20 dB by changing the bias voltage in the range of +1.1 to -3.3 V. The designed GLPC can provide a tunable polarization conversion within the frequency range of 15.5∼35 GHz and shows a more than 75% conversion efficiency. The results of the simulation and the measurement are also in good agreement. The designed GLPC has potential applications in radar cross-section reduction, antenna design, and stealth technology by reconfiguring its polarized reflection characteristic dynamically.

Abstract:We propose a switchable and tunable terahertz metasurface polarization converter based on graphene. The metasurface is composed of a bottom gold film, a lower SiO 2 layer, an intermediate N-type graphene layer, an upper SiO 2 layer, and a top layer of square graphene resonant rings. By using the CST Microwave Studio, we studied their polarization conversion properties. The results show that the metasurface enables a versatile range of functions, including x -to- y linear polarization conversion within the frequency range of 4.23–7 THz, the transformation of linearly polarized waves into right-hand circularly polarized and left-hand circularly polarized waves. Moreover, at 3.873 THz, the metasurface can exhibit circular dichroism (CD) with a high CD value of 0.7. Based on the effect, a strategy to detect three representative avian influenza viruses was proposed and tested, which implies that the metasurface can be applied in biosensing.

Abstract:A switchable and tunable reflective terahertz (THz) polarization converter based on graphene metamaterial is designed and analyzed. By changing the Fermi energy level of graphene, the converter can achieve broadband linear polarization conversion (LPC) and linear-to-circular polarization conversion (LTC-PC). At relatively low Fermi energy level, the converter can achieve dual-band (0.1–0.3 eV) and single-band (0.4–0.6 eV) LPC, respectively, with a broadband frequency range of 2.34–3.54 THz, 3.77–4.22 THz, and 3.75–4.43 THz, and maximum polarization conversion rate (PCR) exceeding 99%. At high Fermi energy level, in addition to the LPC function, the converter can also achieve LTC-PC in the frequency range of 3.34–3.59 THz and 2.89–3.34 THz by adjusting the Fermi energy level. The physical mechanisms are elucidated from the point of the surface current distribution diagram. The structure shows great potential in switchable and tunable broadband THz converters and related applications.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we propose a tunable multifunctional reflection polarization converter based on a graphene sheet, which is decorated by a π-shaped carved-hollow array. Our design can achieve the linear-to-linear (LTL) polarization conversion with 3.58 THz bandwidth and two linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion bands with opposite handedness, which originates from the excitation of the three graphene surface plasmons (GSPs) modes. The LTL polarization converter can be switched to the LTC polarization converter by only changing the medium height. The performances of this multifunctional reflection polarization converter under different geometric parameters, incident angles, and electron scattering time of graphene are investigated. Besides, it is found that the broadband of LTL and double bands of LTC have the blue shift with increasing the Fermi energy ( E f ) of graphene. Especially, the conversion between line-to-left-circular and line-to-right-circular polarization converter can be achieved by changing E f . All the simulation results are conducted by finite element method, and our design has potential applications in integrated terahertz systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-mode multifunctional switching terahertz metasurface polarization converter based on vanadium dioxide (VO2), photosensitive semiconductor silicon (Si) and graphene is designed. The converter can switch between transmission and reflection modes by adjusting the state of VO2. In the insulating state of VO2, the converter operates in transmission mode and performs linear-to-linear polarization conversion (LTL-PC) with a relative bandwidth of 166.0 %. Conversely, when VO2 is in the metallic state, the converter works in reflection mode. By adjusting the pump light intensity to modulate the state of Si, linear-to-circular polarization conversion (LTC-PC) and LTL-PC function can be achieved. Moreover, the Fermi level of graphene can be adjusted via electrostatic gate to further enhance the working bandwidth of the converter. In reflection mode, the relative bandwidths for LTL-PC, linear to left-circularly and right-circularly polarization conversion are 98.1 %, 87.0 % and 4.0 %, respectively. The metasurface polarization converter proposed in this paper has a variety of functions and a variety of control modes, and has the advantages of high polarization conversion rate and wide operating band, showing great potential in switching and tunable wideband terahertz converters and related applications.
Broadband and switchable terahertz polarization converter based on graphene metasurfaces

Abstract:In this work, we propose broadband and switchable terahertz (THz) polarization converters based on either graphene patch metasurface (GPMS) or its complementary structure (graphene hole metasurface, GHMS). The patch and hole are simply cross-shaped, composed of two orthogonal arms, along which plasmonic resonances mediated by Fabry-Perot cavity play a key role in polarization conversion (PC). An incidence of linear polarization will be converted to its cross-polarization (LTL) or circular polarization (LTC), as the reflected wave in the direction of two arms owning the same amplitude and π phase difference (LTL), or ±π/2 phase difference (LTC). Such requirements can be met by optimizing the width and length of two arms, thickness of dielectric layer, and Fermi level EF of graphene. By using GPMS, LTL PC of polarization conversion ratio (PCR) over 90% is achieved in the frequency range of 2.92 THz to 6.26 THz, and by using GHMS, LTC PC of ellipticity χ ≤ -0.9 at the frequencies from 4.45 THz to 6.47 THz. By varying the Fermi level, the operating frequency can be actively tuned, and the functionality can be switched without structural modulation; for instance, GPMS supports LTL PC as EF = 0.6 eV and LTC PC of χ ≥ 0.9 as EF = 1.0 eV, in the frequency range of 2.69 THz to 4.19 THz. Moreover, GHMS can be optimized to sustain LTL PC and LTC PC of |χ| ≥ 0.9, in the frequency range of 4.96 THz to 6.52 THz, which indicates that the handedness of circular polarization can be further specified. The proposed polarization converters of broad bandwidth, active tunability, and switchable functionality will essentially make a significant progress in THz technology and device applications, and can be widely utilized in THz communications, sensing and spectroscopy.

Abstract:Broadband tunable terahertz (THz) polarization converter is a vivid necessity due to its great significance in functional utilization. Graphene is a promising material for the evolution of tunable terahertz devices, thanks to its tunable surface conductivity and extraordinary electrical properties. In this paper, we present a high-efficiency graphene-based ultra-thin metasurface manifesting linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion for THz wave. A broadband LTC conversion with ellipticity over 0.95 can be achieved for the entire operating bandwidth of 14 THz to 40 THz for any graphene chemical potential from 0.4 eV to 0.6 eV. It is also shown that tuning the graphene chemical potential may provide much improved ellipticity and efficiency for different frequencies. The proposed LTC converter also provides over 90% efficiency for the complete operating bandwidth for graphene chemical potential from 0 eV to 0.7 eV. Simulation results also reveal that a perfect LTC converter (ellipticity = 1) with more than 90% efficiency can be realized from 16 THz to 37 THz by tuning the graphene chemical potential between 0 eV to 0.7 eV. Altogether, the proposed LTC polarization converter provides the advantage of dynamic regulation, simpler structure, higher efficiency, enhanced ellipticity and greater relative bandwidth.

Abstract:The design and response of a triple-band linear-to-circular polarization converter (LTCPC) in the terahertz frequency regime using a graphene-based transmission-type metasurface have been studied numerically and analytically. The unit cell of the converter is constructed using lossy silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) with a relative permittivity of 3.9 as the substrate. And two similar layers of graphene-based sub-wavelength structures are used at the top and bottom of it. Multiband linear to circular polarization conversion is achieved from 0.74 THz to 0.98 THz, 1.70 THz to 2.33 THz, and 4.06 THz to 5.19 THz, i.e., about 28 %, 31 %, and 24 % fractional bandwidths, respectively. As the same metasurface configuration is used at the top and bottom layers of the transmission-type unit cell, it can be used as a bidirectional polarization converter with identical responses from both sides. The geometrical optimization of the unit cell is done, and an equivalent lumped parameter circuit model is also proposed for the same, considering analogous responses. Tunability over the operating frequency is achieved by varying the chemical potential and relaxation time of graphene. Moreover, due to the ultrathin width and special types of identical configuration of the metasurfaces, the response of the system remains excellent over a wide range of incident angle variations up to 80° angle of incidence.

Abstract:In this study, a bifunctional tunable metasurface based on graphene is designed to realize circular dichroism and linear-to-circular polarization conversion. The bifunctional tunable metasurface shows significant spin-selective absorption with the incidence of circularly polarized waves, resulting in a huge circular dichroism. Then, with the incidence of linearly polarized waves, the circularly polarized waves are reflected, realizing the linear-to-circular polarization conversion (LTC-PC) function. The switch between "off" and "on" states of the circular dichroism as well as the switch between "off" and "on" states of the polarization conversion can be achieved by altering the Fermi levels of graphene. Furthermore, when circularly polarized waves (linearly polarized waves) are incident at a wide angle on the metasurface in the "on" state, the metasurface maintains consistent circular dichroism (polarization conversion) properties. This design can be applied to active spin detectors, terahertz waveplates, signal processing and many other fields.

Abstract:Graphene-based metasurfaces have emerged as promising photoelectric devices for dynamically controlling the polarization and wavefront of electromagnetic waves. A series of novel graphene-based metasurfaces consisting of split-ring resonators are proposed and researched. A dynamically tunable broadband converter of polarization states composed of periodically patterned graphene split-rings for linearly polarized waves is achieved in terahertz regime. By designing different geometrical parameters, the resonators indicate 2π of smooth phase modulation in a broadband frequency regime. Based on the phase profile design, a polarization beam splitter and a transmission-type focusing metasurface in a broadband frequency regime are both demonstrated successfully. Furthermore, the efficiency of these metasurfaces is dynamically tunable by modulating the gate voltage to change the Fermi energy (Ef) of graphene. This work may offer a potentially effective method to instruct the design of tunable polarization converter and wavefront-controlling devices.

Abstract:Motivated by the imperative demand for design integration and miniaturization within the terahertz (THz) spectrum, this study presents an innovative solution to the challenges associated with singular functionality, limited application scope, and intricate structures prevalent in conventional metasurfaces. The proposed multifunctional tunable metasurface leverages a hybridized grapheme–metal structure, addressing critical limitations in existing designs. Comprising three distinct layers, namely a graphene–gold resonance layer, a Topas dielectric layer, and a bottom gold film reflective layer, this terahertz metasurface exhibits multifunctionality that is both polarization and incident-angle independent. The metasurface demonstrates a broadband circular dichroism (CD) function when subjected to incident circularly polarized waves. In contrast, under linear incidence, the proposed design achieves functionalities encompassing linear dichroism (LD) and polarization conversion. Remarkably, graphene's chemical potential and the incident light's state can be manipulated to tune each functional aspect's intensity finely. The proposed tunable multifaceted metasurface showcases significant referential importance within the terahertz spectrum, mainly contributing to advancing CD metamirrors, chiral photodetectors, polarization digital imaging systems, and intelligent switches.
Polarization Converter with Controllable Birefringence Based on Hybrid All-Dielectric-Graphene Metasurface

Abstract:Previous studies on hybrid dielectric-graphene metasurfaces have been used to implement induced transparency devices, while exhibiting high Q-factors based on trapped magnetic resonances. Typically, the transparency windows are single wavelength and less appropriate for polarization conversion structures. In this work, a quarter-wave plate based on a hybrid silicon-graphene metasurface with controllable birefringence is numerically designed. The phenomena of trapped magnetic mode resonance and high Q-factors are modulated by inserting graphene between silicon and silica. This results in a broader transmission wavelength in comparison to the all-dielectric structure without graphene. The birefringence tunability is based on the dimensions of silicon and the Fermi energy of graphene. Consequently, a linear-to-circular polarization conversion is achieved at a high degree of 96%, in the near-infrared. Moreover, the polarization state of the scattered light is switchable between right and left hand circular polarizations, based on an external gate biasing voltage. Unlike in plasmonic metasurfaces, these achievements demonstrate an efficient structure that is free from radiative and ohmic losses. Furthermore, the ultrathin thickness and the compactness of the structure are demonstrated as key components in realizing integrable and CMOS compatible photonic sensors.
Dynamic Tunable and Switchable Broadband Near-Infrared Absorption Modulator Based on Graphene-Hybrid Metasurface

Abstract:The integration of graphene with metasurfaces enables devices with remarkable dynamic tunability, propelling electromagnetic (EM) manipulations to new heights by transitioning from static to dynamic control. In this study, we theoretically investigate a broadband absorption modulator with dynamic tunability based on a graphene hybrid metasurface. The metasurface consists of a monolayer graphene sheet sandwiched between a square silver block and a silica layer. The excitation of the magnetic toroidal dipole (MTD) leads to a significant enhancement of graphene's electromagnetic absorption. By arranging four blocks as a supercell to support multi-resonance, we achieve a broadband modulator spanning from 1000 to 1210 nm, with graphene absorption exceeding 57 %. Notably, there is no plasmonic hybridization among adjacent components within the super unit. By tuning the Fermi energy of graphene, narrow-band tunability can be achieved at any wavelength within the operation spectrum. Furthermore, the designed device exhibits a perfect modulation depth (similar to 100 %). We demonstrate the switchability of the proposed device by showcasing its ON/OFF status at representative wavelengths of 1205 nm, 1119 nm, and 1052 nm. Thus, the proposed graphene-based hybrid metasurface fulfills the requirements for broadband tunability and switchability, offering a high ON/OFF ratio, full modulation depth, and a small switch voltage gap. This design holds significant potential for future developments.
Dynamically Tunable Linear-Circular Polarization Converter Based on Graphene

Abstract:In this paper, we use graphene to design a transmissive tunable polarization converter with switching effect in the microwave band. In 3.15GHz-3.55GHz frequency band, this polarization converter can selectively convert linearly polarized waves to circularly polarized waves, and its transmittance can exceed 80%. When the chemical potential of graphene is 1 ev, the polarization converter can convert the linearly polarized wave into a circularly polarized wave.
