Abstract:Abstract Due to the increasing demand for higher bandwidth in modern communication systems, conventional networks are continuously expanded with new technologies to improve coverage. Free space optical communications (FSOC) shows some significant advantages concerning system setup time in comparison with the classical fiber optical systems on one hand, substantial spectral bandwidth and performances in comparison with the wireless systems under certain conditions on the other hand. This makes this technology not only a reasonable extension for metropolitan area networks but also provides the capability to set up a network after an outage in case of natural disaster quickly. But transmitting data by using FSOC involves some limiting factors that have to be considered prior to each installation. Since the atmospheric channel is not static, the influence of changing weather conditions or industrial smog have a significant impact on the available bitrate. A simulation platform is developed and presented in this paper for investigation of FSOC considering these circumstances. Regarding the atmospheric channel, turbulence, distance-dependent beam divergence, and applied modulation schemes, a general overview of the capabilities is presented and discussed. The insight of this paper should help to make a decision under which preconditions either the FSOC provides a meaningful application possibility, or the limiting factors become too crucial and other technologies must be considered.

Abstract:In this paper, the design of an atmospheric turbulence simulation system for free-space optical (FSO) communication is proposed. The system can accurately simulate repeatable atmospheric turbulent fading channels. It has a dynamic execution range of 30 dB with an execution rate of 1 MHz. The execution accuracy of the system is higher than 0.1 dB. In addition, the reliable TCP/IP protocol is used for communication, which ensures the convenience and versatility of the system. Experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of the system, and the results prove its superiority. Hence, the atmospheric turbulence simulation system can effectively simulate the influence of atmospheric turbulence channels on FSO communication systems.

Abstract:Fiber-coupled free-space optics (FSO) communications have emerged as a promising wireless technology due to their flexibility, speed, security, and seamless integration with fiber optic systems. However, these systems are very sensitive to atmospheric conditions, particularly turbulence, necessitating robust and tailored solutions according to the application scenarios. However, the intrinsic random nature of atmospheric turbulence, together with the strong dependence on multiple external factors (e.g. varying weather conditions), makes it extremely challenging to adequately compare the merit of different turbulence mitigation techniques. In this work, resorting to the use of a custom-made atmospheric chamber, we tackle the issue of turbulence-induced power fading employing two complementary optical mitigation techniques: i) through enhanced fiber coupling efficiency using either standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) or multi-mode fiber (MMF) and ii) through tailored optical pre-amplification using either Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) or semiconductor fiber amplifiers (SOAs). By carrying out a comprehensive set of repeatable and inter-comparable turbulence emulation tests, we demonstrate that MMF-based fiber coupling can be highly advantageous for less demanding FSO links, achieving 100% reliability after a real-time BER assessment at 4.5Gbps over weak-to-moderate turbulence, which represents a major improvement over the ~10-50% reliability obtained under the same circumstances for the SSMF-coupled system. In turn, for FSO links requiring high-capacity SSMF-coupled receivers, we demonstrate that EDFA-based pre-amplification operating either in saturation or automatic power control (APC) enabling 10 Gbps connectivity with 99% reliability in weak turbulence and ~96-98% in moderate turbulence regimes, in contrast with the baseline reliability of unamplified systems in the same turbulence conditions, which have shown <50% and <10% reliability with weak and moderate turbulence, respectively. Although also highly effective in mitigating turbulence-induced power fades, SOA-based pre-amplification was found to fall short of its EDFA counterpart, mainly owing to its degraded noise figure and nonlinear response, leading to reliability performance in the range of ~70-90%, over the same turbulent conditions.

Abstract:A modulating retro-reflector (MRR) with optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensation is presented and demonstrated to mitigate the turbulence-induced channel distortion for high-speed coherent free-space optical (FSO) communications. The impact of the turbulence on the beam spot, the phase fluctuation and the bit error rate (BER) is analyzed for the MRR FSO link carrying quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals with spatial or single-mode fiber (SMF)-based OPC. The mitigation of the atmospheric turbulence is verified by comparing the transmission performance of the MRR FSO links with and without OPC. The compensation using SMF-based OPC is experimentally demonstrated in a turbulence-tunable atmospheric chamber. The BER is improved by two orders of magnitude in the turbulent channel with the temperature difference of 250 degrees C, and the power penalty is reduced by about 2.0 dB, which agree well with the simulation results. Abstract:This study demonstrates a significant reduction in the bit error rate (BER) within free space optical (FSO) communication systems, even in highly turbulent optical channels. The strategic application of spatial diversity techniques emphasizes the feasibility of achieving low BER values. In the presence of light fog, our system achieves a transmission range of 700 m, while medium and heavy fog conditions reduce it to 450 and 350 m, respectively. Under light dust conditions, the range extends to 350 m and decreases to 120 and 48 m in medium and heavy dust conditions. In a clear sky, our non-return-to-zero orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing-based FSO system successfully transmits 40 Gb/s of data over a distance of 1500 m with reliable performance. The utilization of spatial diversity and beamforming techniques further enhances system reliability, making it robust even in challenging real-world scenarios. However, it is essential to address the impact of adverse weather conditions, such as fog and dust, by developing weather-resistant technologies for reliable FSO communication. While fog generally exhibits better performance, the significance of spatial diversity remains crucial in adverse conditions, encompassing both fog and dust weather factors. The integration of OAM beams and FSO technology holds promise for high-speed and efficient optical communication. This research addresses the mitigation of weather-induced fading through OAM multiplexing.

Abstract:Due to the unprecedented growth of high speed multimedia services and diversified applications initiated from the massive connectivity of IoT devices, 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) cellular communications, the existing electromagnetic spectrum under RF ranges is incapable to tackle the enormous future data rate demands. Free space optical (FSO) communication systems covering an ultra-wide range of unlicensed spectrum have emerged as a promising solution to mitigate conventional RF spectrum scarcity ranging of communication distances from nm to several kilometers. The implication of hybrid FSO, radio over FSO (RoFSO), MIMO FSO systems support ultra high speed 5G/B5G demand by eliminating the limitations of individual technology. FSO offers a broad range of applications both in outdoor and indoor services, for instance, wireless video surveillance, data centers, terrestrial transmission, LAN connectivity, mobile cellular networks, last mile solution, space communications, radio astronomy, remote sensing, and so on. Despite the potential benefits of FSO technology, its link reliability deteriorates due to atmospheric turbulence, cloud induced fading, some other environmental factors such as fog, aerosol, temperature variations, storms, heavy rain, pointing error, and scintillation. This survey presents the overview of several key technologies, significance, demonstration, recent development, and implications of state-of-the-art criteria in terms of spectrum reuse, classification, architecture, physical layer security, and future applications for understanding FSO system among different appealing optical wireless technologies. In addition, the adaptive modulation, channel modeling schemes, relay-aided transmission, cooperative diversity, potential challenges, numerous mitigation techniques, and opportunities in the near future are also outlined to realize the successful deployment of FSO systems.

Abstract:Free space optical (FSO) communication system has obtained significant importance in communication field due to its unique features: unlimited spectrum, larger bandwidth and high data rate, low mass and less power requirements, quick and easy deployability. FSO system better suits in disaster recovery, defense and last mile problems in networks, remote sensing and so on. However, FSO system has greater advantage, its performance is mainly degraded by adverse effects like beam wandering and spreading, scattering and mainly a major degradation factor is atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors which leads to severe degradation in Bit error rate (BER) and Signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the FSO link and makes the communication link infeasible. This paper gives a detailed survey on performance enhancement of FSO communication system and also discusses various channel distribution models and modulation techniques to have high reliability and FSO link availability. In this paper, the various atmospheric effects like turbulence, fog, absorption and scintillation and so on are discussed. The first part of the paper analysis the channel models and the latter part of the paper summarizes the different modulation techniques, diversity techniques and also the comparative study of the (SNR) and (BER) under various atmospheric factors of the FSO system. This survey provides the comprehensive details in order to provide low cost and high capacity FSO link design.

Abstract:The ever-increasing data rate demand for wireless systems is pushing the physical limits of standalone radio-frequency communications, thus fostering the blooming of novel high-capacity optical wireless solutions. This imminent penetration of optical communication technologies into the wireless domain opens up a set of novel opportunities for the development of a new generation of wireless systems providing unprecedented capacity. Unlocking the full potential of free-space optics (FSO) transmission can only be achieved through a seamless convergence between the optical fiber and optical wireless domains. This will allow taking advantage of the staggering progress that has been made on fiber-based communications during the last decades, namely leveraging on the latest generation of Terabit-capable coherent optical transceivers. On the other hand, the development of these high-capacity optical wireless systems still faces a set of critical challenges, namely regarding the impact of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors. In this work, we provide an in-depth experimental analysis of the main potentialities and criticalities associated with the development of ultra-high-capacity FSO communications, ultimately leading to the long-term (48-hours) demonstration of a coherent FSO transmission system delivering more than 800 Gbps over $\sim$42 m link length, in an outdoor deployment exposed to time-varying turbulence and meteorological conditions.

Abstract:Free Space Optics (FSO) communication provides attractive bandwidth enhancement with unlicensed bands worldwide spectrum. However, the link capacity and availability are the major concern in the different atmospheric conditions. The reliability of the link is highly dependent on weather conditions that attenuate the signal strength. Hence, this study focuses to mitigate the weather and geographic effects using iterative optimization on FSO communication. The optimization maximizes the visibility distance while guaranteeing the reliability by minimizing the Bit Error Rate (BER). The wireless optical communication system is designed for the data rate of 10 Gbps. The performance of the proposed wireless optical communication is compared against the literature in terms of visibility distance, quality factor, BER, and Eye diagram at different atmospheric conditions. The simulation results have shown that the proposed work has achieved better performance.

Abstract:This research paper presents the development and implementation of a real-time communication system that utilizes LEDs for transmitting text, image, and audio through Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC) and Underwater Wireless Optical Communication (UWOC) channels. The impact of atmospheric and oceanic attenuation and turbulences are considered for the performance analysis of the proposed system. The various atmospheric weather conditions like light fog, dense fog, and heavy rain are considered for FSOC while in the case of UWOC, effects like pure water, and seawater with turbulence and without turbulence are considered. The outcomes of the experiments and simulations, including quality factors, eye diagrams, and bit error rates, are plotted and discussed in the results.

Abstract:Free space optical communication (FSO) is designed using the orthogonal quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) modulation technique. The system performance is evaluated for various levels of atmospheric turbulence, transmitter power, beam divergence, transmitter and receiver aperture diameters, and atmospheric losses. In this paper, we evaluated the system parameters for atmospheric turbulence using the Gamma gamma turbulence model. The system is evaluated for atmospheric losses such as clear air, medium-heavy rain, haze, and fog with various levels of atmospheric turbulence using the Optisystem Software tool for 1550 nm optical waves for SISO and MIMO OQPSK modulation. The obtained results show that the proposed model with OQPSK modulation and MIMO technology provides the best outcomes in terms of the BER, Q factor and received power. A link distance up to 3 km is achieved in the presence of atmospheric losses and turbulence.

Abstract:Free-space optical (FSO) communications has potential advantages of higher data capacity and lower probability of interception, when compared to radio-frequency communications. However, atmospheric turbulence generally limits performance of FSO links because it induces modal coupling from the fundamental Gaussian mode to many higher-order Laguerre- Gaussian (LG) spatial modes. We review pilot-assisted selfcoherent (PASC) approach that can enable turbulence-resilient FSO communications. In PASC, a frequency-offset continuouswave pilot beam is co-transmitted with the data beam and eventually the two beams are optoelectronically mixed at receiver's photodetector (PD). During square-law mixing in PD, a turbulence conjugate distortion is automatically generated and applied to the distorted data beam. Thus, all the spatial modes can be efficiently mixed between pilot and data beams. As a result, the recovered data quality is not severely affected by turbulence-induced modal coupling effects. We also review the extended applications of PASC approaches, including: (a) increasing spectral efficiency by Kramers-Kronig detection; (b) enhancing system bandwidth by PASC with a PD array; (c) improving PD bandwidth utilization by PASC with self-homodyne detection. Finally, we discuss the enhanced misalignment tolerance by PASC in FSO links.

Abstract:Channel fading caused by environmental factors such as atmospheric turbulence, fog and clouds is one of the key issues that highly impedes the practical implementation and deployment of free-space optical (FSO) communications. To alleviate the channel fading and further improve the system performance, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate a real-time multi-gigabit/s FSO communication system employing femtosecond laser filament, to the best of our knowledge, where the laser filament is used to generate a quasi-continuous air waveguide to guide the information-bearing light through atmospheric turbulence, fog and clouds. The bit-error-rate (BER) performance under different environmental conditions has been systematically investigated and analyzed. It is shown that with the help of the femtosecond laser filament, significant system performance improvement with BER below the 7% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) limit of 3.8×10-3 can be obtained for most of the time regardless of the environmental conditions of atmospheric turbulence, fog and clouds. Our experimental results clearly present the feasibility and benefit of femtosecond laser filament for FSO communications in complex environment or for some emergency cases.

Abstract:Free Space Optic (FSO) is the solution for telecommunications technology that offers high data rates, wide bandwidth, and low power consumption. However, to maximize the performance of the FSO system, the modulation used should be considered in environmental conditions. This study aims to compare the performance of the FSO communication link based on digital modulation variations used in various weather conditions, including sunny, rainy, and foggy weather. This study uses two attenuation models, namely the Kim and Kruse models, with variations in transmission distance from 500 meters to 10 kilometers. Modulation variations used include QPSK, 8-PSK, 16-PSK, and 16-QAM at 10 Gbps bitrate. The simulation is accomplished using OptiSystem 17.0 software. The study results show that sunny weather (very clear) has the best visibility compared to rain and fog conditions with an attenuation value of 0.46 dB/km on the Kim and Kruse models. QPSK modulation has the best performance with a BER value of less than 1x10-12 up to a transmission distance of 8 km in sunny weather, 3 km in rainy weather (medium rain), and 800 m in foggy (moderate fog) weather. The 8-PSK modulation has a BER value of less than 1x10-12 with a range of 2000 m in sunny weather and 1500 m in rainy weather but does not meet the standards in foggy weather conditions. 16-PSK and 16-QAM modulation have above baseline BER values during rainy and foggy conditions, but 16-QAM modulation still has a BER value of less than 1x10-3 during foggy conditions at a distance of 500 m.

Abstract:Increased capacity, higher data rate, decreased latency, and better service quality are examples of the primary objectives or needs that must be catered to in the near future, i.e., fifth-generation (5G) and beyond. To fulfil these needs, cellular network design must be drastically improved. The 5G cellular network design, huge multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology, and device-to-device communication are all highlighted in this comprehensive study. Hence, free-space optics (FSO) is a promising solution to address this field. However, FSO standalone is insufficient during turbulent weather conditions. FSO systems possess some limitations, such as being able to be disturbed by any interference between sender and receiver such as a flying bird and a tree, as it requires line-of-sight (LOS) connectivity. Moreover, it is sensitive to weather conditions; the FSO performance significantly decreases in bad weather conditions such as fog and snow; those factors deteriorate the performance of FSO. This paper conducts a systematic survey on the existing projects in the same area of research such as the hybrid FSO/Radio frequency (RF) communication system by listing each technique used for each model to achieve optimum performance in terms of data rate and Bit Error Rate (BER) to be implemented in 5G networks.

Abstract:Future high-capacity data links are best suited for free space optical (FSO) communications since they have a larger bandwidth and secure transmission compared to RF links. FSO has several uses including indoor and outdoor settings. The impacts of weather are extensive, with fog being the main mitigating factor reducing link availability. The solution to the problem is to employ a hybrid network with RF/FSO and backup link. Different liquid water densities were used to analyze the performance of the hybrid RF/FSO system in foggy weather. In terms of BER, Q factor, and data rate, a comparison between RF and FSO lines is made. The findings demonstrated that in lower-medium of liquids with water density, the influence of fog weather on RF link is minimal. Under the same situations, an FSO link is useful as a backup link in higher liquid water density concentrations.
