Abstract:The aggravation of environmental problems such as water scarcity and air pollution has called upon the need for a sustainable solution globally. Membrane technology, owing to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as one of the favorable technologies for water and air purification. Among all of the membrane configurations, hollow fiber membranes hold promise due to their outstanding packing density and ease of module assembly. Herein, this review systematically outlines the fundamentals of hollow fiber membranes, which comprise the structural analyses and phase inversion mechanism. Furthermore, illustrations of the latest advances in the fabrication of organic, inorganic, and composite hollow fiber membranes are presented. Key findings on the utilization of hollow fiber membranes in microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation, gas and vapor separation, membrane distillation, and membrane contactor are also reported. Moreover, the applications in nuclear waste treatment and biomedical fields such as hemodialysis and drug delivery are emphasized. Subsequently, the emerging R&D areas, precisely on green fabrication and modification techniques as well as sustainable materials for hollow fiber membranes, are highlighted. Last but not least, this review offers invigorating perspectives on the future directions for the design of next-generation hollow fiber membranes for various applications. As such, the comprehensive and critical insights gained in this review are anticipated to provide a new research doorway to stimulate the future development and optimization of hollow fiber membranes.

Abstract:Whilst the main focus of metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) aka metal 3D printing has been to produce fully dense parts; the main aim of this research is to use the technology to fabricate metallic permeable parts with controlled porosity characteristics so that they may be used as a high performance, high-pressure and cleanable and therefore "green" reusable filters for various industrial applications. The fusion bed technology, more specifically Direct Metal Printing (DMP) has been utilized to fabricate test parts with porous structure that was later tested for filtration efficiency. In DMP process, the part is built in thin layers with each layer a cross-sectional slice of the shape. This method makes it possible to design and manufacture intricate parts with detailed internal sections that is not always possible with conventional manufacturing methods. The technique also makes it possible to design and manufacture combination of solid and porous sections in one operation or in another word a complete filter assembly to be used straight off the print with no or minimal post processing required. Another advantage of using DMP is the possibility of seamlessly incorporating features like pleats to increase the filtration area, incorporate additional strengthening structures and support structures if required as well as manufacturing a graded media with larger pores on the outside getting finer as you approach the centre. The printing parameters have been selected to achieve optimum combination of tightly controlled pore size range, size distribution and mechanical strength to promote the optimum filtration efficiency and dirt-holding capacity; at the same time maintaining the structural integrity for operation under high pressures, a wide range of flow conditions, operating temperature, and compatibility with a wide range of process fluids. The results from the first round of tests on scaled down samples demonstrated that the fabricated porous metal parts are suitable to be used in a wide range of applications and operating conditions. They are bi-directional in terms of flow and as a result, they are cleanable and reusable. They can be designed to a variety of shapes and sizes with ease and are recyclable if needed. This approach of manufacturing cleanable filters can reduce the demand for new and newly processed materials. In addition, it can reduce production, distribution, and storage costs. Hence less energy usage, less pollution, and less demand for hazardous waste disposal and associated challenges with disposal and the impact on the environment.

Abstract:Membrane technology offers the best options to "drought proof" mankind on an increasingly thirsty planet by purifying seawater or used (waste) water. Although desalination by reverse osmosis (RO) and wastewater treatment by membrane bioreactors are well established the various membrane technologies still need to be significantly improved in terms of separation properties, energy demand and costs. We can now define the ideal characteristics of membranes and advances in material science and novel chemistries are leading to increasingly effective membranes. However developments in membranes must be matched by improved device design and membrane engineering. It is likely that limitations in fluid mechanics and mass transfer will define the upper bounds of membrane performance. Nevertheless major advances and growth over the next 20 years can be anticipated with RO remaining as the key to desalination and reclamation, with other membrane processes growing in support and in niche areas.

Abstract:Membrane filtration processes are best known for their application in the water, oil, and gas sectors, but also in food production they play an eminent role. Filtration processes are known to suffer from a decrease in efficiency in time due to e.g., particle deposition, also known as fouling and pore blocking. Although these processes are not very well understood at a small scale, smart engineering approaches have been used to keep membrane processes running. Microfluidic devices have been increasingly applied to study membrane filtration processes and accommodate observation and understanding of the filtration process at different scales, from nanometer to millimeter and more. In combination with microscopes and high-speed imaging, microfluidic devices allow real time observation of filtration processes. In this review we will give a general introduction on microfluidic devices used to study membrane filtration behavior, followed by a discussion of how microfluidic devices can be used to understand current challenges. We will then discuss how increased knowledge on fundamental aspects of membrane filtration can help optimize existing processes, before wrapping up with an outlook on future prospects on the use of microfluidics within the field of membrane separation.

Abstract:Since its inception in the 19th century, microfiltration (MF) has evolved as a membrane-based separation technology for treating various effluents and wastewaters. This review aims to familiarize its readers with general and specific research trends on various topics in MF. The level of research interest has been measured by the number of publications in that area for each year. An increasing research trend was observed from the number of publications since 2009 to 2018 with MF as the major topic. During the past decade, MF articles have spanned in about 150 different journals, with The Journal of Membrane Science, Desalination and Separation and Purification Technology being the major ones. Major topics of interest include membrane fabrication and modification, waste water treatment and fouling studies, while a significant research increase was seen in various fabrication methods and MF application in the food sector. MF modeling still remains a topic which needs further research output, and has experienced a decline over the past years. Several potential research areas are also identified in this review which will help future researchers to materialize their efforts into the right direction.

Abstract:During the last 35 years membranes have evolved from a laboratory tool to industrial products with significant technical and commercial impact. Today, membranes are used for desalination of sea and brackish water and for treating industrial effluents. They are efficient tools for the concentration and purification of food and pharmaceutical products and the production of base chemicals. Furthermore, membranes are key components in artificial organs, drug delivery devices, and energy conversion systems. In combination with conventional techniques membranes often provide cleaner and more energy‐efficient production routes for high‐quality products. Fundamental aspects of membranes and membrane processes are discussed, as well as technically and economically effective applications. The present and future membrane market is assessed and new developments and future research needs are discussed.

Abstract:In recent decades, engineered membranes have become a viable separation technology for a wide range of applications in environmental, food and biomedical fields. Membranes are now competitive compared to conventional techniques such as adsorption, ion exchangers and sand filters. The main advantage of membrane technology is the fact that it works without the addition of any chemicals, with relatively high efficiency and low energy consumption with well arranged process conductions. Hence they are widely utilized in biotechnology, food and drink manufacturing, air filtration and medical uses such as dialysis for kidney failure patients. Membranes from nanofibrous materials possess high surface area to volume ratio, fine tunable pore sizes and their ease of preparation prompted both industry and academic researchers to study their use in many applications. Abstract:As a kind of pressure-driven membranes, the nanofiltration (NF) membrane and process can separate molecules and ions with different molecular weights and valences, which are well applicable in purification, concentration, recovery of resources across various industries. However, in some complex applications, an individual NF membrane often faces the problems of deficient separation efficiency and membrane instability. Researchers have developed NF based hybrid processes, which not only solve the above problems faced by single NF, but also enhance the overall efficiency of hybrid systems involving other separation processes. Currently, there is a notable surge in publications regarding the NF-based hybrid processes, but a systematic review is still lacking. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the key integration approaches and application areas in which NF-based hybrid process have been utilized in recent years. Abstract:Finding advanced filtration and separation solutions is often critical for the development of highly efficient and reliable products and tools, as well as for ensuring a high quality of life. In fact, it is difficult to find an industry where filters do not play an important role. A car, for example, contains filters for transmission fluid, fuel, engine air, cabin air, coolant, and brake fluid. Furthermore, the quality of our drinking water, the treatment of wastewater, and the air we breathe all depend critically on filtration solutions. The filtration and purification business is expanding greatly, with scores of large companies and thousands of SMEs competing fiercely to develop better filters. Industrial demand for innovative filtration solutions is growing rapidly, along with a more intensive usage of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) in filter design processes. Comprehensive mathematical studies need to be carried out to provide engineers with proper CAE tools and approaches. The solid-liquid and solid-gas separation processes discussed in this chapter are intrinsically multiscale, multiphysics processes. Dust particle and pore size in filter media may vary from the sub-micron scale to hundreds of microns, while a filter element may range from several centimeters to several meters in size. Depending on the operating conditions and the material properties, the filter media may behave as a rigid body or be deformable. This chapter provides an overview of the industrial and mathematical challenges in modeling and simulating filtration processes, along with a summary of the basic achievements of the Fraunhofer ITWM in this area. Approaches for the microscale (pore scale) and macroscale (filter element scale) investigation of filtration processes are discussed in detail, along with a recently developed method for treating the coupled multiscale filtration problem. Software tools developed in the last decade are described. Finally, some success stories are presented to illustrate the potential of industrial mathematics for solving practical problems.

Abstract:Abstract The emergence of MOF–based separation membranes has transformed liquid contaminant filtration with impressive sieving properties. However, their use in multiphase water filtration is hindered by a limited sieving range and susceptibility to collapse in solution. To address this challenge, an innovative solution is presented: the Multilevel Cellular Graphene Skeleton (MCGK) induced by femtosecond laser, onto which a continuous MOF nanolayer (CMN), specifically ZIF–8, is grown. This forms a groundbreaking multistage micron/nanocomposite pore membrane. The MCGK/CMN membrane significantly expands the range of filterable contaminants and enhances stability. It utilizes a multilevel, multi–pore size sieving strategy for effective multiphase water filtration, achieving an impressive 90% efficiency in self–driven solar steam generation sieving. Additionally, it excels in removing organic pollutants and over 80% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while reducing metal ion concentrations. In liquid pressure–driven filtration, it achieves complete oil adsorption and reduces VOCs and metal ion concentrations. This innovative multistage micron/nanocomposite pore membrane holds great potential for diverse practical applications and provides insights for next–generation nanofiltration membranes, promising more efficient and resilient water purification technologies in the future.

Abstract:Patterned regular sieves and filters with comparable molecular dimensions hold great promise as an alternative to conventional polymeric gels and fibrous membranes to improve biomolecule separation. Recent developments of microfabricated nanofluidic sieves and filters have demonstrated superior performance for both analytical and preparative separation of various physiologically relevant macromolecules, including proteins. The insights gained from designing these artificial molecular sieves and filters, along with the promising results gathered from their first applications, serve to illustrate the impact that they can have on improving future separation of complex biological samples. Further development of artificial sieves and filters with more elaborate geometrical constraints and tailored surface functionality is believed to provide more promising ideals and results for biomolecule separation, which has great implications for proteomic research and biomarker discovery.
Biological filtration for wastewater treatment in the 21st century: A data-driven analysis of hotspots, challenges and prospects

Abstract:Biological filtration has been widely used in wastewater treatment around the world, yet achieving satisfactory removal of pollutants remains a challenge due to the complexity of water pollution. In order to reveal the hotspots and trends of biological filtration from the perspective of research innovation, 5454 SCI papers and 14,287 patents collected from the Web of Science Core Collection and Derwent Innovation Index database were analyzed by visualization techniques. The results showed that China ranked first in the number of both papers and patents, while the USA and Japan contributed significantly in papers and patents, respectively. Co-occurrence analysis obtained the mapping knowledge domains and demonstrated distinct associations between contaminants ("nitrogen", "pharmaceuticals", "personal care products"), chemicals ("carbon", "activated carbon", "media"), process ("biodegradation", "adsorption" or "ozonation") and characteristics ("kinetics", "performance", "diversity"). Moreover, this review summarized the recent advances of biological filtration media, microorganism and combined process being applied. It was concluded that environmentally friendly biological filtration ("phytoremedi", "microalga", "recirculating aquaculture system"), bio-enhanced biological filtration ("bioaugment", "fungi", "low augment") and emerging pollutants ("emerging contamin", "antibiotic resistance gen", "organic micropollut", "trace organic chem") were the hotspots through data-driven analyses. Technology evolution path of biological filtration generally indicated the transition from conventional biological filtration for nitrogen and phosphorus removal to Fenton-biofiltration combined technology and finally to ozone-biological filtration. Furthermore, the technical innovation direction of the collaborative control of multi-media pollution, the low-carbon biological filtration and short-process technology was prospected. This work can serve as a quick reference for early-career researchers and industries working in the area of biological filtration.

Abstract:In the era of freshwater scarcity, the world seeks to limit overexploitation of all accessible resource of freshwater and also to recover potable water by treating wastewater. Various domestic, agricultural and industrial activities lead in generating high amount of wastewater from which water can be recovered for human needs. Over many years, conventional filtration process has gained success to some extent in effluents treatment for disposal. Yet, improvement in filtration process is necessary for advanced wastewater treatment in order to make the whole process handy and cost-effective. The functionality of membrane can be enhanced by incorporating polymers with novel functions in advanced membrane separation methods like microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) for reclaiming potable water from wastewaters, catalysis and biomedical applications. This book chapter mostly focuses on the use of different polymeric substances for MF and UF membrane preparation and their application in various sectors. Basic principle, novel manufacturing techniques for polymeric membrane, process design i.e., synthesis of polymers as designed membrane feedstock, surface modifications, synergistic fabrication of different polymers for advanced functionality, antifouling and antibacterial properties of membrane are also discussed.
