Abstract:With steady growth on CO2 emission over the years, removal of CO2 from the environment is a critical issue in preventing global warming and climate change. Due to negligible volatility and remarkable thermal stability, ionic liquids have become potential media for CO2 capture. However, their drawbacks such as high price, toxicity and inefficient energy consumption have severely limited their applications in CO2 capture. Here, a promising deep eutectic solvent was synthesized by a one-pot method, simply mixing NH4Cl with monoethanolamine (MEA) at 30 degrees C for 30 min to form [MEAHCI][MEA] confirmed by H-1 NMR. [MEAHCI][MEA] with EG exhibits a rapid initial kinetics of CO2 absorption, around 22.5 wt% within 10 min. It also has good thermal-stability, high tolerance to water contents, economically feasibility of regeneration and robust performance in recycle. This novel capture system which can be prepared on-site is feasible for industrialization and offers an efficient, inexpensive and safe system for CO2 capture. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are considered to be potential absorbents for CO2 capture compared to traditional amine solutions, because they have many advantages such as lower volatility and better thermal stability. In this study, a series of novel gamma- and epsilon- m-based amino acid salts (AASs) were prepared through one-step hydrolysis reaction of accessible and cheap lactams as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA). The chemical structures of these AASs were characterized by ESI-MS and NMR. Dihydric alcohol was selected as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) to prepare AAS-based DESs because of its low specific heat capacity and high boiling point. The physical properties of AAS-based DESs, such as density at 313.2-353.2 K, viscosity at 313.2-353.2 K, the melting temperature from 173.2 to 273.2 K, and thermal decomposition temperature from 300 to 750 K, were also determined. The gas absorption experiments were carried out on a dual-chamber at temperatures from 313.2 to 333.2 K and pressures up to 1.1 bar. It is found that K[Gaba]-EG has the largest CO2 uptake capacity with 0.12 gg(-1) at 1.0 bar and 313.2 K, better than almost all absorbent with AASs reported in literatures (0.02 gg(-1) similar to 0.07 gg(-1)). The CO2 absorption mechanisms were proved to be a combination of 2:1 and 1:1 stoichiometric reaction through thermomechanical analysis and NMR. This paper will present distinctive insights into the preparation of CO2 absorbent for effective carbon capture.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion are a significant cause of greenhouse gas, contributing in a major way to global warming and climate change. Carbon dioxide capture and sequestration is gaining much attention as a potential method for controlling these greenhouse gas emissions. Among the environmentally friendly solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have demonstrated the potential capability for carbon capture. To establish a theoretical framework for DES activity, thermodynamics modeling and solubility predictions are significant factors to anticipate and understand the system behavior. Here, we combine the COSMO-RS model with machine learning techniques to predict the solubility of CO2 in various deep eutectic solvents. A comprehensive data set was established comprising 1973 CO2 solubility data points in 132 different DESs at a variety of temperatures, pressures, and DES molar ratios. This data set was then utilized for the further verification and development of the COSMO-RS model. The CO2 solubility (ln(xCO2)) in DESs calculated with the COSMO-RS model differs significantly from the experiment with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of 23.4%. A multilinear regression model was developed using the COSMO-RS predicted solubility and a temperature-pressure dependent parameter, which improved the AARD to 12%. Finally, a machine learning model using COSMO-RS-derived features was developed based on an artificial neural network algorithm. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental CO2 solubilities, with an AARD of only 2.72%. The ML model will be a potentially useful tool for the design and selection of DESs for CO2 capture and utilization

Comprehensive Evaluation of a Deep Eutectic Solvent Based CO 2 Capture Process through Experiment and Simulation

Abstract:As an emerging green and sustainable solvent, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) applied to the carbon capture process is considered to be a promising absorbent. This work aims to comprehensively evaluate the potential and effectiveness of DESs for CO2 capture. First, a hydrophobic DES, which is composed of tetrabutylammonium bromide as the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and decanoic acid as the hydrogen bond donor (HBD) with a molar ratio of 1:2, was screened out from 280 DESs by the conductor-like screening models–segment activity coefficient (COSMO-SAC) model. Then, quantum chemistry methods were used to investigate the interaction mechanism between the DES and CO2. The results show that the interactions between CO2 and the DES are mainly weak hydrogen bonds and van der Waals dispersion attraction forces. Next, gas–liquid equilibrium experiments were performed to investigate the effects of temperature and pressure, the types of HBAs and HBDs, and the molar ratios of HBA to HBD on the solubility of CO2. The results show that the process of DES absorbing CO2 obeys Henry's law and confirm the reliability of the COSMO-SAC model prediction. Finally, a rigorous rate-based model for the DES-based postcombustion CO2 capture process was simulated, and the life cycle environmental sustainability was evaluated and compared with that of the traditional solvent monoethanolamine, confirming the advantages of the negligible vapor pressure, thermal stability, and low ecological toxicity of the DES. Abstract:A leading cause of global warming is the increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to anthropogenic activities which prompts an urgent need for substantial reduction. Recently, CO2 absorption in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has attracted scientific attention, because of their adaptability compared to traditional ionic liquids and aqueous amine solutions. This study employs the heating method to synthesize DESs using tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPAB) and formic acid (Fa) with molar ratios of TPAB-Fa (1:1) and TPAB-Fa (1:2). Absorption experiments by static method quantified CO2 solubility in the DESs under varied pressures and temperatures. TPAB-Fa (1:2) at 25.0 °C was the most efficient with the CO2 solubility of 0.218. Thermodynamic modeling was performed by employing the nonrandom two liquids activity coefficient model and the Peng-Robinson equation of state for the liquid and gas phases, respectively. The Henry's law constant was determined from experimental data. CO2 physical absorption was confirmed via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses. TPAB-Fa (1:2), as the superior DES, exhibited regeneration efficiency of 99% after five absorption/desorption cycles.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as an emerging class of green solvents with flexible designability have attracted remarkable attention in efficient CO2 capture and utilization due to their good affinity with CO2. Herein, this review provides a detailed overview of DESs-mediated CO2 capture and utilization based on the latest advances. The CO2 capture in DESs is summarized from the perspective of physical and chemical absorption, with a particular emphasis on various absorption mechanisms, thermodynamic analyses, effects of water, and computer-aided DESs screening and design methods. Regarding subsequent utilization of CO2, DESs-mediated thermal conversions (mainly the cycloaddition reactions of CO2 and epoxides) are illustrated from epoxide activators, CO2 activators, and catalytic role of DESs; while DESs and ILs used for CO2 trapping, activating, hydrogen evolution suppression, and electrocatalyst preparation are discussed in the electrochemical CO2 reduction processes. Finally, the future challenges and outlooks for DESs-mediated CO2 capture and utilization are proposed.

Abstract:Abstract The soft-SAFT equation of state is employed for the screening of deep eutectic solvents (DES) for CO2 capture based on key performance indicators, namely, CO2 absorption capacity, and enthalpy of absorption. This work belongs to a long-term project on assessing the adequacy of advanced EoSs (soft-SAFT) as a tool for the evaluation and design of alternative solvents for CO2 capture. The models for the pure DESs and their mixtures with CO2 are validated with experimental data, and subsequently used in a fully predictive manner to calculate the thermophysical properties needed for evaluating solvent performance. Results demonstrate that under the same operating conditions, [TBA][Cl]:LA (1:2) is the most promising DES in terms of amount of CO2 absorbed and enthalpy of absorption. However, the comparison of these solvents to 30 wt.% aqueous MDEA solution shows that the promise of DESs is far from adequate in terms of CO2 solubility, being 13 times lower than that obtained with aqueous MDEA. Nevertheless, DESs show a clear advantage in terms of lower enthalpy of absorption, being 3 times less than aqueous MDEA, along with the absence of water as a co-solvent. The collection of the acquired results confirms the reliability of the soft-SAFT EoS as an attractive and valuable screening tool for CO2 capture and process modelling.

Abstract:The increase in energy consumption, along with an increase in human population and industrial activities after the industrial revolution, has caused to increase in the consumption of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide from fossil fuels has the most significant effect on the production of greenhouse gases and global warming. The absorption of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere is the most crucial method to reduce carbon dioxide in the air. Recently, a new solvent has been developed to absorb greenhouse gases under the name of deep eutectic solvents (DES). These solvents are biodegradable, non-toxic, or low-toxic compounds that are easily obtained. A mathematical model based on the Peng–Robinson (PR) equation of state (EOS) with three different mixing rules Modified van der Waal's (M1), Quadratic (M2) and Wong Sandler (M3) was developed to correlate the CO2 solubility in six types of DESs. The model was validated and compare with the obtained experimental data reported in the literature at temperatures (293.15 – 333.15) K and pressure (0.405 – 30.408) bar. The experimental and calculated data of PR EOS with three mixing rules were generally in a good agreement by obtaining % AARD a round (0.08 – 8.08), (0.05 – 7.58) and (0.09 – 6.56) for M1, M2 and M3 respectively, and the best results with less %AARD was obtained from Wong-Sandler mixing rule in the most of cases.
Efficient Absorption of CO2 by Protic-Ionic-Liquid Based Deep Eutectic Solvents

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) are among the key technologies to achieve large-scale carbon emission reduction globally. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are considered as designable solvents, which has attracted intensive attention for CO2 capture. Here, a series of binary DESs are synthesized through one-step mixing with the starting materials of protic ionic liquid (PIL) and amine. The eutectic behavior was investigated by measuring the melting point of PILs and amine. The saturated vapor of these DESs and industrial MDEA solution were measured and compared. These DESs are investigated to have high absorption capacity (0.1 g ⋅ g-1 at 1.0 bar and 25 °C), superior apparent absorption rate constant (0.381 min-1 vs 0.012 min-1 of 70 wt.% MDEA), moderate interaction with CO2 (the enthalpy change is as low as -34.8 kJ ⋅ mol-1). The absorption mechanism is also investigated by NMR analysis. Eight absorption/desorption regeneration experiments are carried out to show their reversibility. Considering the advantages, including convenience of synthesis, large absorption capacity, fast absorption rate, and moderate interaction energy as well as good regeneration, these DESs are believed to be as potential CO2 absorbent in practical applications.

Abstract:Recent research and reviews on CO2 capture methods, along with advancements in the industry, have highlighted high costs and the energy-intensive nature as the primary limitations of conventional direct air capture and storage (DACS) methods. In response to these challenges, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as a promising absorbents due to their scalability, selectivity, and lower environmental impact compared to other absorbents. However, the molecular origins of their enhanced thermal stability and selectivity for DAC applications have not been explored before. Therefore, the current study focuses on a comprehensive investigation into the molecular interactions within an alkaline DES composed of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and ethylene glycol (EG). Combining FT-IR and quantum chemical calculations, the study reports structural changes and intermolecular interactions induced in EG upon adding KOH and its implications on CO2 capture. Experimental and computational spectroscopic studies confirm the presence of noncovalent interactions (hydrogen bonds) within both EG and the KOH-EG system and point to the aggregation of ions at higher KOH concentrations. Additionally, molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) surface analysis, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM) analysis, and reduced density gradient-noncovalent interaction (RDG-NCI) plot analysis elucidate changes in polarizability, charge distribution, hydrogen bond types, noncovalent interactions, and characterize interaction strengths, respectively. Evaluation of explicit and hybrid models assesses their effectiveness in representing intermolecular interactions. This research enhances our understanding of molecular interactions in the KOH-EG system, which are essential for both absorption and desorption of CO2. The study also aids in predicting and selecting DES components, optimizing their ratios with salts, and fine-tuning the properties of similar solvents and salts for enhanced CO2 capture efficiency.

Abstract:A series of functional ionic deep eutectic solvents (iDESs) containing pyridinolate anions were reported as green sorbents, solvents, and catalysts for highly efficient capture and transformation of CO2 to quinazoline-2,4 (1H,3H)-dione and its derivatives at mild conditions via tuning the structures of iDESs. Physical properties, such as density and viscosity, as well as flow activation energy and thermal expansion coefficient, were systematically investigated. Effects of the partial pressure of CO2 and the absorption temperature on the CO2 absorption capacity using these functional iDESs as sorbents were studied, and the different absorption mechanisms, including carbamate and carbonate pathways, were analyzed by FT-IR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, thermodynamics analysis of CO2 absorption was performed according to the chemical reaction mechanism, and K-theta,Delta(r)G(theta)m),Delta(r)H(theta)m, and Delta(r)S(theta)mm were calculated. Furthermore, the effects of cations, anions, HBDs, reaction temperature, and the molar ratio of catalyst to substrate (nCat./nSub.) on CO2 conversion were systematically studied, and excellent isolated yield of up to 97.1% at mild conditions could be obtained with only 0.25 equiv. DES as the solvent as well as the sorbent and the catalyst. Plausible "simultaneous CO2 activation and substrate activation" reaction mechanism of capture and transformation of CO2 to quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones by [N2222][4-PyO]/DMSO (1:4) was verified by the spectra of FT-IR and based on previous reports. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first examples of tuning functional iDESs for the capture and transformation of CO2 to quinazoline-2,4-(1H,3H)-dione and its derivatives with only 0.25 equiv. DES. The method may also open a door to obtain the high efficiency of capture and transformation of such gases as NOx, SO2, CO, H2S, and CO2 by functional DESs.
Experimental investigation of novel ternary amine-based deep eutectic solvents for CO2 capture

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of using water as a low-viscosity component in ternary amine-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) on the physicochemical properties, thermal stability, and CO 2 absorption capacity of the resulting DESs. It should be emphasized that water is a component of the ternary DES. The effect of water content in the DES, type of hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs), hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), and HBA:HBD ratio on the above parameters was investigated. Moreover, the effect of temperature and pressure on the CO 2 absorption capacity of DESs was predicted using the predictive model COSMO-RS. This model was also used to predict the CO 2 solubility in the DESs and the results were compared with the experimental values. The results showed that the addition of small amounts of water, e.g., 5 and 10 wt% during preparation, can significantly decrease the viscosity of the resulting DESs, up to 25% at room temperature, while maintaining the high CO 2 absorption capacity and high thermal stability. The ternary DESs based on MEA exhibited a high CO 2 absorption capacity of 0.155–0.170 g CO 2 / g DES. The ternary DESs were found to be thermally stable with a decomposition temperature of 125°C, which promotes the use of such solvents in post-combustion capture processes. Finally, COSMO-RS proved to be a suitable tool for qualitative prediction of CO 2 solubility in DESs and demonstration of trends related to the effects of temperature, pressure, molar ratio, water content, HBD and HBA on CO 2 solubility.

Abstract:The absorption and separation of CO 2 is one of the main strategies to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate global climate change. In this context, a series of ternary superbase/betaine-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized to capture CO 2 , and their density, viscosity and thermal stability were investigated. The effects of temperature, pressure, different hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) and alkalinity of the superbase on their CO 2 affinity were evaluated by the isovolumetric saturation method. The uptake of CO 2 by the DES synthesized from betaine, 1,2-propanediol and 1,8-diazabicyclo(5.4.0)undec-7-ene reached a maximum of 1.5071 mol·kg −1 at 303.15 K and a pressure of 0.187 MPa. The simultaneous chemical and physical adsorption of CO 2 by the ternary DESs was verified by FTIR spectroscopy, and the absorption mechanism was also proposed. The reaction equilibrium thermodynamic model (RETM) was improved to obtain the "Active DES" model, which was correlated with the experimentally determined CO 2 solubility. The reaction equilibrium constants and Henry's law constants were obtained for each ternary system. The ternary superbase/betaine DESs proposed in this paper are green, economical and high-performance absorbers for capturing CO 2 .

High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Solubility in a Deep Eutectic Solvent (Choline Chloride/MDEA) + Sulfolane - Experimental Study and Thermodynamic Modeling Using PC-SAFT Equation of State

Abstract:In recent years, releasing post-combustion CO 2 into the atmosphere has led to global warming. Air contamination has appeared as a challenge for governments, so several approaches have been used to overcome this issue. So far, physical and chemical solvents have been employed by researchers for CO 2 capture. These years deep eutectic solvents (DES) have emerged as an alternative to traditional solvents. In this study, we have investigated a mixture of DES + a physical solvent for the CO 2 solubility measurement using a static vapor-liquid equilibrium cell. In this work, the DES was composed of Choline Chloride and MDEA in a molar ratio of 1 to 6 which is blended with sulfolane in weight percentages of 5,10, and 15. We performed the experiments at temperatures of 323.15, 333.15, and 343.15 K and a pressure range of up to 5 MPa. In our previous work, we had already investigated the influence of piperazine on the present DES that led to enhancing CO 2 absorption in the mixture, while adding sulfolane to the DES in the present work does not positive effect on CO 2 solubility in the DES. Enhancing pressure and reducing temperature also led to increasing CO 2 solubility. Finally, we modeled the solubility data with the PC-SAFT equation of state. The modeling results were in excellent agreement with the experimental data for DES-CO 2 , DES-sulfolane-CO 2, and DES-piperazine-CO 2 systems, so the PC-SAFT EoS successfully estimated the carbon dioxide solubility in the present systems with the absolute average deviation percent of less than unity.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have shown great potential in capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and are expected to help alleviate the pressing issue of global warming. This study utilizes experimental approaches and molecular dynamics(MD) simulation to research the process of CO2 capture with amine-based DESs. The DESs, composed of methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (MTPPB) and methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) as the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and donor (HBD), respectively, were evaluated for their physical properties and CO2 absorption capacity. Additionally, the impact of different water contents and temperatures on CO2 absorption was investigated. Results demonstrated that HBD quantity negatively correlates with viscosity while positively correlating with CO2 solubility. The water content of the DESs ranged from 10 wt% to 50 wt%, leading to a progressive reduction in viscosity, while the CO2 absorption capacity initially decreased and then increased. The DES with a molar ratio of 1:16 had the lowest viscosity of 10.5 mPa.s and the greatest CO2 absorption of 0.1004 g CO2/g DES at 50 wt% water content and 303.15 K, causing significant savings in solvent costs. MD simulations were utilized to explore the microscopic interactions among HBA, HBD, CO2, and water, revealing that the addition of 50 wt% water does not affect the structure of the DES. The experimental and computational studies presented in this study illustrate that the introduction of a specific quantity of water to DESs and selecting suitable temperatures can enhance CO2 capture efficiency, providing theoretical support for industrial application of CO2 capture.

Abstract:A systematic research work on the rational design of task specific Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) has been carried out via density functional theory (DFT) in order to increase knowledge on the key interaction parameters related to efficient SO2 capture by DES at a molecular level. A total of 11 different DES structures, for which high SO2 affinity and solubility is expected, have been selected in this work. SO2 interactions in selected DES were investigated in detail through DFT simulations and this work has generated a valuable set of information about required factors at the molecular level to provide high SO2 solubility in DES, which is crucial for enhancing the current efficiency of the SO2 capture process and replacing the current state of the art with environmentally friendly solvents and eventually implementing these materials in the chemical industry. Results that were obtained from DFT calculations were used to deduce the details of the type and the intensity of the interaction between DES and SO2 molecules at various interaction sites as well as to quantify short-range interactions by using various methods such as quantum theory of atoms in a molecule (QTAIM), electrostatic potentials (ESP) and reduced density gradients (RDG). Systematic research on the molecular interaction characterization between DES structures and SO2 molecule increases our knowledge on the rational design of task-specific DES.

Abstract:In this study, CO 2 solubility in different choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has been investigated using the Quantitative Structure–Property Relationship (QSPR). In this regard, the effect of different structures of the hydrogen bond donor (HBD) in choline chloride (ChCl) based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has been studied in different temperatures and different molar ratios of ChCl as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) to HBD. 12 different datasets with 390 data on the CO 2 solubility were chosen from the literature for the model development. Eight predictive models, which contain the pressure and one structural descriptor, have been developed at the fixed temperature (i.e. 293, 303, 313, or 323 K), and the constant molar ratio of ChCl to HBD equal to 1:3 or 1:4. Moreover, two models were also introduced, which considered the effects of pressure, temperature, and HBD structures, simultaneously in the molar ratios equal to 1:3 or 1:4. Two additional datasets were used only for the further external validation of these two models at new temperatures, pressures, and HBD structures. It was identified that CO 2 solubility depends on the "EEig02d" descriptor of HBD. "EEig02d" is a molecular descriptor derived from the edge adjacency matrix of a molecule that is weighted by dipole moments. This descriptor is also related to the molar volume of the structure. The statistical evaluation of the proposed models for the unfixed and fixed temperature datasets confirmed the validity of the developed models.
