Abstract:The emission of microplastics into nature poses a threat to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Their penetration of the food chain presents a danger to human health as well. Wastewater treatment plants can be seen as the last barrier between microplastics and the environment. This review focuses on the impact of waste treatment plants in retaining microplastics. Studies show that no wastewater treatment method leads to a complete retention of microplastics, and so wastewater treatment plants themselves are viewed as point sources for the discharge of microplastics into the aquatic environment. Problems associated with the utilization of microplastic loaded sewage sludge are also discussed in the review.

Abstract:Microplastics have multidimensional traits, as compared to other emerging contaminants, presenting a concern to terrestrial, aquatic life and humans through inhalation or ingestion. Hazardous chemicals adsorbed on microplastics could potentially be transferred to the environment or consumed by living organisms. We review the transformation of plastic waste in the environment, the origin and transportation of microplastics, the regulatory measures for plastic and microplastic pollution, and the fate of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants. Plastic debris is building up in the environment despite legislative attempts by many countries. Accumulated plastic waste from a range of sources breaks down into smaller fragments and microplastics through chemical, physiochemical and biodegradation mechanisms. This review also discusses personal protective equipment in relation to COVID-19 as a source of microplastics. Millions of microplastics are discharged into the environment through effluents and biosolids. Daily microplastic emissions to the environment from effluent range about 0.46 million to 140 billion. Previous studies had only explored the existence of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants, with limited visualization of how microplastics interact with the various treatment technologies used in wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract:Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment which has attracted increasing environmental, health, socio-economic, and regulatory concerns. Exposure to these emerging pollutants has been associated with certain disorders in both animals and humans. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are a reservoir of microplastics due to the diverse influent sources. They also serve as a point source of microplastics pollution in the environment due to their inability to completely remove these pollutants in the final effluent. The present review discusses the physicochemical properties - shapes, polymer composition, and sizes of microplastics present in WWTPs. The impact of these properties on microplastics removal efficiency in WWTPs and the other factors influencing their occurrence and removal are further elucidated. The impact of effluent microplastics on the environment is also provided. Finally, microplastics abatement measures such as redesigning washing machine filters and the efficacy of policies on regulating plastics pollution are highlighted. Investigations into microplastics mass instead of particle number only, will constitute a future research direction which will increase our understanding of microplastics nexus in wastewater pollution and treatment.

Abstract:The advent of plastic to the social situation has suppressed a series of demands from both the industry and the population, due to cost, durability and disposal. Because they can be rigid, malleable, opaque, translucent, easy or difficult to melt by the action of fire, some make them capable of serving as raw material for various products on the market, including those widely used in the food industry. In view of the above, the present study aims at a bibliographical review on the topic of microplastics, where the search will be to verify the primary and secondary steps necessary for the formation of the compound, its direct and indirect influence on food production, the physical-chemical processes through which compounds are obtained and the presence or absence of regulation regarding this environmental liability. The present study aims to analyze as a basis the search for knowledge of the primary and secondary formation of microplastics. Subsequently, together with its main objective, this study aims to search for the physico-chemical and thermodynamic phenomena involved in the process of formation and obtaining of microplastics, the polluting potential and, like all waste, its implications for human health. A study horizon was established covering the years 2015 to 2023, where 3,750 articles were found and after applying open access filters, duplication of publication, words present only in the abstract and not in the text, 49 articles remained that are the object of this study. The direct implications of microplastic pollution are already a relevant reason for discussion and subsequent regulation by managers, researchers, international organizations and society in general. Public health problems that can transform into microplastics, containment and adsorption mechanisms of these compounds in living organisms, are points to be pursued by academia as a whole. Contamination by these compounds was found in bottled mineral water, human milk, processed foods, seafood, showing the extent of contamination of this material.
Microplastics in Wastewater and Drinking Water Treatment Plants: Occurrence and Removal of Microfibres

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), and specifically microfibres (MPFs), are ubiquitous in water bodies, including wastewater and drinking water. In this work, a thorough literature review on the occurrence and removal of MPs, and specifically MPFs in WWTPs and DWTPs, has been carried out. When the water is treated, an average microfiber removal efficiency over 70% is achieved in WWTPs and DWTPs. These high percentages are still inefficient for avoiding the presence of a large number of microfibres in treated wastewater and also in tap water. RSF, DAF, oxidation ditch and CAS processes have been described as the most efficient treatments for eliminating MPFs from wastewater treatment. It is remarkable the wide range of the data reported on this topic; for example, treated wastewater contains between not detected and 347 MPFs/L, whereas tap water contains between not detected and 168 MPFs/L. Microfibres constitute more than half of the MPs found in treated wastewater and sewage sludge, whereas in DWTP effluents the percentage of MPFs is around 32%. Nevertheless, the relative amount of MPFs reported in tap water is notably higher (71%). Microfibres from WWTPs are discharged to the environment, being a source of MP pollution. Additionally, MPs released by DWTPs directly enter the drinking water lines, which constitute a direct route for MP human consumption, so that it has been estimated that an adult may ingest an average value of 7500 MPFs per year only via tap water. Thus, this review provides an update on the performance of WWTPs and DWTPs in removing MPs from water, which is an issue of great interest.

Abstract:Plastic is widely used for human activities (food packaging, medical, technological devices, etc.) and there is a growing concern regarding the risks for environmental and human health because they have still not been fully evaluated. Particularly, microplastics (primary and secondary) are present in all environmental compartments and this poses a potential threat because of their entry into the food chain. Furthermore, microplastics can absorb numerous pollutants that can be accumulated in the human body through bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes. We carried out a systematic review using a PRISMA approach to verify the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for microplastic removal. The international databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus) were used to find published studies on efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for microplastic removal. The search period was between January 2010 and June 2020. Over 1000 full research papers were initially selected through the use of keywords. After that, the papers were further selected by English language, title, and abstract, and duplicate papers and non-relevant papers were eliminated according to eligibility criteria. Finally, we included 15 full research papers. In each of the 15 full research papers selected, the microplastics identified were categorized by the authors for shape, size, and type of polymers identified. The characterization of the various types of microplastics was performed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) or Raman spectroscopy. We have observed how wastewater treatments plants located in different continents (Europe, Asia, North America) mostly use a primary and secondary type of treatment that allows one to reach a high percentage of microplastics removal from wastewater. Most of the wastewater treatments plants investigated reported a microplastics removal efficiency greater than 90%, but despite this, millions of microplastics continue to be released every day into the aquatic environment. Then, in the near future, efficient and common standardized protocols for monitoring MPs should be drawn up, as well as increasing the knowledge of sources and strategies to further reduce microplastics contamination of treated wastewater.

Abstract:In last 10 years, the interest about the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the environment has strongly grown. Wastewaters function as a carrier for MPs contamination from source to the aquatic environment, so the knowledge of the fate of this emerging contaminant in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a priority. This work aims to review the presence of MPs in the influent wastewater (WW) and the effectiveness of the treatments of conventional WWTPs. Moreover, the negative impacts of MPs on the management of the processes have been also discussed. The work also focuses on the possible approaches to tackle MPs contamination enhancing the effectiveness of the WWTPs. Based on literature results, despite WWTPs are not designed for MPs removal from WW, they can effectively remove the MPs (up to 99 % in some references). Nevertheless, they normally act as "hotspots" of MPs contamination considering the remaining concentration of MPs in WWTPs' effluents can be several orders of magnitude higher than receiving waters. Moreover, MPs removed from WW are concentrated in sewage sludge (potentially >65 % of MPs entering the WWTP) posing a concern in case of the potential reuse as a soil improver. This work aims to present a paradigm shift intending WWTPs as key barriers for environmental protection. Approaches for increasing effectiveness against MPs have been discussed in order to define the optimal point(s) of the WWTP in which these technologies should be located. The need of a future legislation about MPs in water and sludge is discussed.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the primary recipients of microplastics (MPs), prior to their discharge into natural waterbodies. The aim of this article is to summarize the generation process of MPs and the efficiency of their removal by treatment technologies currently adopted by WWTPs, as well as the influence of sludge treatment on the fragmentation of MPs. WWTPs mainly remove MPs by means of adhesion, sedimentation, and filtration. The average removal efficiency of MPs is less than 90% and is affected by the choice of wastewater treatment process and the properties of MPs (such as the size, density and morphology). The secretion of biological enzymes by microbes and the metabolites of biofilm may promote the hydrolysis of microbial carrier materials, resulting in the release of endogenous MPs under shear force. Furthermore, during wastewater pumping, disinfection and sludge thermal hydrolysis treatment, MPs may form sub-micron-scale secondary MPs through mechanical, ultraviolet, ozone and thermal degradation processes. Processes such as thermal drying of sludge and lime stabilization have been found to lead to the fragmentation of MPs increase the specific surface area and number of MPs, leading to an increase in the potential ecological threat posed by MPs in sludge. Currently, the level of MP pollution throughout the environment is continually increasing. This review will help improve wastewater and sludge treatment processes, effectively reducing the risk of MPs entering the natural water bodies and soil through WWTPs. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Microplastics in wastewater plants: A review of sources, characteristics, distribution and removal technologies

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are widespread in everyday life, and since wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serve as an important route for MPs to enter natural water bodies, a thorough understanding of the distribution and removal of MPs in wastewater treatment plants is of great importance. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the measured distribution of MPs and the current status of their removal in wastewater treatment plants. The main sources of MPs in wastewater treatment plants are personal care products in domestic wastewater, textile clothing and industrial wastewater made from plastics, textile factories and the friction of road tires. The MPs that entered the sewage treatment plant were predominantly in the form of fibers, fragments, granular MPs and other types of MPs. The size of MPs is divided into three categories: <0.5 mm, 0.5-1 mm and 1-5 mm. At all treatment stages in wastewater plants, 56.8-88.4 % of MPs are removed in primary treatment, but the primary sedimentation and degreasing stages remove most MPs. The efficiency of the activated sludge process for secondary treatment is inconsistent and is generally between 42.1 and 99.2 %. The coagulation, filtration and disinfection stages of tertiary treatment all have some MPs removal capacity. In addition, novel removal technologies are also described, such as modified filtration technology, membrane separation technology, electroflocculation, sol-gel and photocatalysis. These novel removal technologies can further limit the entry of microplastics into natural water bodies through sewage treatment plants and improved sewage treatment processes help reduce the risk of MPs entering the natural environment through sewage treatment plants. This article will provide reference for the distribution and removal of microplastics in various levels of WWTPs.
Recent advances on microplastics pollution and removal from wastewater systems: A critical review

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) (plastic particles <5 mm) are globally acknowledged as a serious emerging micropollutant , which passes through various pathways in natural habitats and eventually ends up in our food chain. In this context, the present study critically reviews recent advances in MPs sampling and detection, occurrence, fate, and removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by delineating their characteristics that manifest toxicity in the environment via effluent discharge. While there is currently no standard protocol in place, this work examined and compared the latest approaches adopted for improved sampling, sample processing, and characterization of MPs via fluorescence imaging and certified reference materials for method validation. MPs concentration from different sources in the WWTPs varies considerably ranging between 0.28 and 18285 MPs/L (raw wastewater), 0.004–750 MPs/L (effluent), and 0.00023–10380 MPs/kg (sludge). Assessment of MPs removal efficiency across different treatment stages in various in WWTPs has been performed and elucidated their removal mechanisms. The overall MPs removal efficiency in primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment stages in WWTPs reported to be around 57–99%, 78.1–99.4%, and 90–99.2%, respectively. Moreover, the review covers advanced treatment methods for removing MPs, including membrane bioreactors, coagulation/flocculation, ultrafiltration , rapid sand filtration, ozonation, disc filtration, and reverse osmosis, which have been found to be highly effective (>99%). Membrane bioreactors have been proclaimed to be the most reliable secondary treatment technique for MPs removal. Coagulation (92.2–95.7%) followed by ozonation (99.2%) as a tertiary treatment chain has been demonstrated to be the most efficient in removing MPs from secondary-treated wastewater effluent. Further, the review delineates the effect of different treatment stages on the physical and chemical characteristics of MPs, associated toxicity, and potential impact factors that can influence the MPs removal efficiency in WWTPs. Conclusively, the merits and demerits of advanced treatment techniques to mitigate MPs pollution from the wastewater system, research gaps, and future perspectives have been highlighted.

Abstract:Plastic pollution of the aquatic environment is a major concern considering the disastrous impact on the environment and on human beings. The significant and continuous increase in the production of plastics causes an enormous amount of plastic waste on the land entering the aquatic environment. Furthermore, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are reported as the main source of microplastic and nanoplastic in the effluents, since they are not properly designed for this purpose. The application of advanced wastewater treatment technologies is mandatory to avoid effluent contamination by plastics. A concrete solution can be represented by membrane technologies as tertiary treatment of effluents in integrated systems for wastewater treatment, in particular, for the plastic particles with a smaller size (< 100 nm). In this review, a survey of the membrane processes applied in the plastic removal is analyzed and critically discussed. From the literature analysis, it was found that the removal of microplastic by membrane technology is still insufficient, and without the use of specially designed approaches, with the exception of membrane bioreactors (MBRs).

Abstract:Discharging microplastics into the environment with treated wastewater is becoming a major concern around the world. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) release microplastics into terrestrial and aquatic habitats, mostly from textile, laundry, and cosmetic industries. Despite extensive research on microplastics in the environment, their removal, and WWTP management strategies, highlighting their environmental effects, little is known about microplastics' fate and behaviour during various treatment processes. Microplastics interact with treatment technologies differently due to their diverse physical and chemical characteristics, resulting in varying removal efficiency. Microplastics removed from WWTPs may accumulate in soil and harm terrestrial ecosystems. Few studies have examined the cost, energy use, and trade-offs of large-scale implementation of modern treatment methods for the removal of microplastics. To safeguard aquatic and terrestrial habitats from microplastics' contamination, focused and efficient management techniques must bridge these knowledge gaps. This review summarizes microplastic detection, collection, removal and management strategies. A compilation of treatment process studies on microplastics' removal efficiency and their destiny and transit paths shows recent improvement. Bioremediation, membrane bioreactor (MBR), electrocoagulation, sol-gel technique, flotation, enhanced filtering, and AOPs are evaluated for microplastic removal. The fate and behaviour of microplastics in WWTPs suggest they may be secondary suppliers of microplastics to receiving ecosystems. Innovative microplastic removal strategies and technologies such as nanoparticles, microorganism-based remediation, and tertiary treatment raise issues. These new WWTP technologies are examined for feasibility, limitations, and implementation issues. Pretreatment modifies microplastic size, adsorption potential, and surface morphology to remove microplastics from WWTPs. Membrane bioreactors (MBR) can remove 99.9% of microplastics more efficiently than other approaches. MBR systems require membrane cleaning and fouling control, which raises operational and capital costs. To reduce MPs, plastic alternatives and strict controls, including microplastic waste transformation, should be prioritized. Microplastics must be controlled through monitoring policy execution and awareness.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are emerging as a serious environmental concern, with wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) acting as the main entry routes for MPs into aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. On a global scale, our literature review found that MP research in WWTPs has only been conducted on 121 WWTPs in 17 countries, with the majority of the work being done in Europe (53%), followed by the United States of America and Canada (24%), Asia (18%), and Australia (5%) in recent years. MPs in WWTPs are primarily derived from Personal Care and Cosmetic Products (PCCPs), which are primarily composed of polyethylene (PE) derivatives. Based on the studies, microfibers (57%) and fragments (47%) are observed to be the most common MP forms in influents and effluents of WWTPs. The chemical characterization of MPs detected in WWTPs, showed the occurrence of polyethylene (PE) (22%), polystyrene (PS) (21%), and polypropylene (13%). Although MP retention/removal efficiencies of different treatment technologies vary from medium to high, deliberations on sludge disposal on agricultural soils containing MPs and MP intrusion into groundwater are required to sustainably regulate MP contaminant transport. Thus, the development of efficient detection methods and understanding their fate are of immense significance for the management of MPs. Despite the fact that ongoing research in MPs and WWTPs has unquestionably improved our understanding, many questions and concerns remain unanswered. In this review, the current status of the detection, occurrence, and impact of MPs in WWTPs across the world are systematically reviewed to prioritize policy-making to recognize the WWTPs as global conduits of MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics, pervasive contaminants from plastic, present significant challenges to wastewater treatment processes. This review critically examines the interactions between microplastics and biofilm-based treatment technologies, specifically focusing on the concepts of "biofilm on microplastics" and "microplastics in biofilm". It discusses the implications of these interactions in contaminant removal and process performance. Advanced characterization techniques, including morphological characterization, chemical composition analysis, and bio-information analysis, are assessed to elucidate the complex interplay between microplastics and biofilms within biofilters, biological aerated filters (BAFs), rotating biological contactors (RBCs), and moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs). This review synthesizes current research findings, highlighting that microplastics can either hinder or enhance the treatment processes, contingent on their concentration, physicochemical properties, and the specific biofilm technology employed. The insights gained from this review are essential for developing strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of microplastics and for optimizing the design and operation of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:<p>Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are known to be one of the main and most important sources of microplastics discharge into the environment. Although the occurrence and distribution of microplastics (MPs) in various environments have been extensively investigated, their characteristics in certain environmental matrices remain almost unknown. This paper aims to review strategies for sampling, sample pretreatment, and characterization of MPs detected in WWTPs and sewage sludge. In addition, this paper will review the efficiency of WWTPs in the removal of microplastic particles as well as their fate and implications as a source of toxic chemicals. According to literature, microplastics in water samples are mostly comprised of secondary ones (fibers and fragments) with the main polymers composed of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene (PE). A significant proportion of particles are removed during the initial stages of primary and secondary treatment, while membrane bioreactor (MBR) is found to be the most efficient tertiary treatment technology. The removal rate is affected by the characteristics of MPs such as size, shape, and density. The majority of microplastics eliminated during wastewater treatment are prone to be found in sewage sludge. Thus, billions of MPs are released into the environment via sewage sludge applications each year. Microplastics can also act as a specific layer that adsorbs and transports distinct pathogenic/bacterial taxa assemblages and promotes the persistence of antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, the current study provides an overview of recent research regarding MPs occurrence and removal in WWTPs and sewage sludge.</p>

Abstract:Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) are ubiquitously distributed in the environment and have drawn significant attention due to their adverse effects on organisms. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a crucial role in the accumulation and release of MNPs. This review primarily focuses on enhancing the removal efficiency of MNPs in WWTPs. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the impacts and applications of current treatment processes as well as emerging technologies, with the aim of constructing more effective treatment process flows. This review identifies more effective options, including fine gratings, aerated grit tanks, coagulating sedimentation, anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A 2 O) or sequencing batch reactor (SBR), membrane bioreactor, sand filtration (SF), and dissolved air flotation (DAF). Based on these, several efficient process combinations for MNPs removal are proposed. Additionally, it is observed that the biological treatment stage primarily depends on the adsorption of activated sludge. However, the adsorbed MNPs can impact the performance of the sludge. To address the challenge faced by traditional WWTPs in removing small-sized MNPs and managing high loads of MNPs in sludge, adsorption technology, membrane filtration, and advanced oxidation processes are compared and analyzed. These technologies show potential for promoting the removal and degradation of MNPs in the aqueous phase. We provide a detailed discussion on their efficiency, influencing factors, and potential mechanisms, while also considering their future practical applications in WWTPs. Finally, the future research challenges in MNPs removal are summarized, and corresponding research directions are suggested, serving as a valuable reference in this field.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution has become emerging environmental concern around world. The wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are attributed to a major pathway for microplastics (MPs) to enter into aquatic environment. To understand the fate and control strategies of MPs in WWTPs, we investigated MPs at a full-scale WWTP, Eastern China, with two parallel wastewater treatment systems, i.e. oxidation ditch (OD) and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for case study. The influent MPs consisted of polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 47%), polystyrene (PS, 20%), polyethylene (PE, 18%) and polypropylene (PP, 15%). MP morphotypes dominated in fragments (65%) and fibers (21%), which mainly were PET, with limited films (12%) and foams (2%). Typical plastic microbeads were not observed. The dominant size of MPs was >500 mu m (40%) and 62.5-125 mu m (29%). MP concentrations increased across the treatment systems depends on facility of treatment process. Influent MPs were removed by 99.5% in MBR system versus 97% in OD system on the basis of plastic mass while 82.1% versus 53.6% on MP number. The removed MPs accumulated in sludge phase. MBR system has much higher MP removal efficiency than OD system, likely due to membrane filtration. The results suggest that the source control of MPs by eliminating MP fibers from laundry facilities, banning use of plastic microbeads, Styrofoam products and plastic bags and properly selecting WWTP treatment unit could significantly reduce the mass and number of MPs from WWTPs. Abstract:Plastic products, despite their undeniable utility in modern life, pose significant environmental challenges, particularly when it comes to recycling. A crucial concern is the pervasive introduction of microplastics (MPs) into aquatic ecosystems, with deleterious effects on marine organisms. This review presents a detailed examination of the methodologies developed for MPs removal in water treatment systems. Initially, investigating the most common types of MPs in wastewater, subsequently presenting methodologies for their precise identification and quantification in aquatic environments. Instruments such as scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and Raman tweezers stand out as powerful tools for studying MPs. The discussion then transitions to the exploration of both existing and emergent techniques for MPs removal in wastewater treatment plants and drinking water treatment plants. This includes a description of the core mechanisms that drive these techniques, with an emphasis on the latest research developments in MPs degradation. Present MPs removal methodologies, ranging from physical separation to chemical and biological adsorption and degradation, offer varied advantages and constraints. Addressing the MPs contamination problem in its entirety remains a significant challenge. In conclusion, the review offers a succinct overview of each technique and forwards recommendations for future research, highlighting the pressing nature of this environmental dilemma.

Abstract:Numerous studies have reported the presence of microplastics (MPs) in waste collection and disposal systems. However, current scientific studies on measuring MP occurrence in a waste management context are not comparable due to a lack of standardized methodologies. Consequently, the impact of MPs on ecosystems and human health remains largely unclear. To address the inconsistencies, present in published studies, this review thoroughly examines sample preparation techniques for transfer stations, landfill leachate, recycling, compost, and incineration ash samples. Furthermore, various analytical approaches such as flotation, filtration, and organic matter digestion, as well as morphological categorization, identification, and quantification, are subsequently rigorously assessed. The benefits and limitations of each methodology are evaluated to facilitate the development of accurate and effective methods for detecting and characterizing nanoplastics. Recent research suggests that plastic recycling and composting facilities are the primary environmental sources of microplastic pollution among different waste treatment methods. The most prevalent microplastic types discovered in waste management were polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), with fragment and fiber being the most frequently reported morphologies. The review highlights a number of tactics that could be integrated into the methodology development for detecting microplastics in waste management systems (WMS), ultimately leading to better consistency and reliability of data across different studies. In essence, this will advance our comprehension of potential risks associated with microplastics.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), usually plastic fragments smaller than 5 mm in size, are ubiquitous in the environment and pose an increasing threat to the entire ecosystem as an emerging micropollutant. MPs not only contribute to the accumulation of the plastics in the environment but also get transported into the food chain due to absorption and ingestion by aquatic species. They originate from either the direct environmental discharge of purposefully manufactured microscopic fragments as primary MPs or the fragmentation of large plastic debris by environmental factors as secondary MPs. It is widely speculated that the sewage treatment plants (STPs) are one of the prime conduits for releasing of MPs into the aquatic environment despite some degree of removal in the plants. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the occurrence and fate of MPs in STPs for their effective control. In this context, the current status of the identification, abundance, and removal of MPs in STPs is comprehensively explored. Various protocols for collection, pre-treatment, determination, and characterization of MPs in sewage are outlined and compared. The occurrence of MPs in the STPs in terms of their materialistic composition, shape and sizes, and concentration is summarized. The fate of MPs in various treatment stages in the STPs including entrainment in sewage sludge is also assessed. Further, future prospects on the development of advanced removal techniques are presented for effective MPs control.
