Abstract:The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method was used to simulate the aggregation of four types of surfactants at the oil/water interface. The effect of different cations such as Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ was compared. The results show that the interaction between different types and concentrations of cationic and head group of surfactants causes the surfactant adsorption layer to bend and changes the aggregation morphology of the micelles. The radial distribution function (RDF) of the surfactant head groups with water molecules and cations is calculated. The calculated results show that it exists a chemical hydration layer and a physical hydration layer between the surfactant head groups and the water molecules. Cation has different degrees of impact, thus changes the original hydration structure. Nonionic and zwitterion surfactants have good salt resistance. Potential of Mean Force (PMF) was used to analyze the energy change when the cation interacted with the polar head. The nonionic and zwitterion surfactants are determined to have a good oil displacement effect even under the conditions of high calcium-magnesium mineralization. The present results could help in choosing surfactants used in oil/water with inorganic salts.

Abstract:Atomic molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on the monolayer systems of N-acyl amino acid-based surfactants. The role of intermolecular hydrogen bonds and ionic side chain length of dicarboxylate surfactants were investigated through radial and spatial distribution functions. It was found that the hydrogen bonding capability between surfactants was the major factor determining the surface area each surfactant could occupy. Tighter packing of surfactants would lead to a weaker interaction with water molecule, and the protonation of carboxylate groups resulted in stronger inter-surfactant interactions. The hydrogen bonds with water molecules were found to prevail between the carboxylate groups, and regular cage-like water distributions surrounding the surfactant headgroups were seen. The introduction of divalent ions leads to a significant increase of counterion binding, and their intramolecular and intermolecular bindings of calcium ions were also well characterised. The intramolecular chelation of calcium ions was found impossible between the carboxylate groups for N-acyl glutamate due to its flexible side chain.

Abstract:The obvious different aggregation and adsorption behavior of six newly quaternary ammonium surfactants with different lipophilic counterions has been discoverd by measurements of equilibrium and dynamic surface tension, fluorescence and conductivity. Interestingly, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and its surface tension γCMC decrease with the increasing counterion chain length. However, three methods have confirmed that an exception of CMC increases slightly from C16NC1 to C16NC2. According to experimental results, a balanced mechanism between hydrophobicity and electrostatic of counterion is proposed. Besides, the dynamic surface tension results show the diffusion coefficient increases with the increasing counterion length both at a short time (Dt → 0) and long time (Dt → ∞), which indicates a faster adsorption process. Unlike the inorganic counterion, the diffusion coefficient decreases with the increase of hydrophobic chain length. This is attributed to the strong electrostatic interactions between counterions and cationic headgroups.

Abstract:The mechanism of action of quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) antiseptics has long been assumed to be straightforward membrane disruption, although the process of approaching and entering the membrane has little modelling precedent. Furthermore, questions have more recently arisen regarding bacterial resistance mechanisms, and why select classes of QACs (specifically, multicationic QACs) are less prone to resistance. In order to better understand such subtleties, a series of molecular dynamics simulations were utilized to help identify these molecular determinants, directly comparing mono‐, bis‐, and triscationic QACs in simulated membrane intercalation models. Three distinct membranes were simulated, mimicking the surfaces of E. coli and S. aureus, as well as a neutral phospholipid control. By analyzing the resulting trajectories in the form of a timeseries analysis, insight was gleaned regarding the significant steps and interactions involved in the destabilization of phospholipid bilayers within the bacterial membranes. Finally, to more specifically probe the effect of the hydrophobic section of the amphiphile that presumably penetrates the membrane, a series of alkyl‐ and ester‐based biscationic quaternary ammonium compounds were prepared, tested for antimicrobial activity against both Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria, and modelled.

Molecular dynamics simulations of ammonium surfactant monolayers at the heptane/water interface.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on the monolayers of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and gemini surfactants 12-S-12 with S = 3, 6, and 12 at the n-heptane/water interfaces. The normal density profiles of the interface show that the distributions of surfactants at the liquid/liquid interface are significantly broader than those at air/water interfaces from comparisons with neutron reflection experiments and previous simulations. The spacers of 12-3-12 and 12-6-12 do not migrate much from the interface, while that of 12-12-12 tends to bend into the oil phase. The conformation of the surfactants shows that the spacers are more flexible than the tails. The characteristic angles of the surfactant well depict the geometry of the surfactants at the interface. The connected N(+)s of 12-3-12 and 12-6-12 have a prominent peak in the radial distribution functions, while those of 12-12-12 have nearly the same peak with those not connected. It is also found by three-dimensional spatial distribution functions that water molecules and bromide ions prefer to be shared between the positively charged methyl or rnethylene groups.

Abstract:The molecular simulation method was introduced in the context of membrane filtration process of biomolecules to investigate the effect of monomer structure on its charge property, and also the interaction between membrane and biomolecules, thus providing theoretical information on the selection of monomers in membrane charge modification.Amino acids and dipeptides were taken as samples in the simulation process. Hyperchem software was used to investigate membrane modification by acrylic acid, quaternary ammonium compound and their derivatives, and the appropriate operation conditions in microfiltration process of biomolecules.The experimental work on membrane charge modification confirmed the simulation results. Interaction energy results also proved to be in agreement with previous experimental work. The present study illustrated that the molecular simulation method could be of practical importance in the design of separation material and optimization of separation process.

Abstract:The effect of the alkyl chain of quaternary ammonium-based surfactants on their aquatic toxicity and aerobic biodegradability has been studied. Two families of monoalkylquats surfactants were selected: alkyl trimethyl ammonium and alkyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium halides. Acute toxicity tests on Daphnia magna and Photobacterium phosphoreum were carried out and EC50 values in the range of 0.1-1 mg/l were obtained for the two series of cationic surfactants. Although the substitution of a benzyl group for a methyl group increases the toxicity, an incremental difference in toxicity between homologs of different chain length were not observed. Biodegradability of the different homologs was determined not only in standard conditions but also in coastal water, both tests yielding similar results. An increase in the alkyl chain length or the substitution of a benzyl group for a methyl group reduces the biodegradation rate. The degradation of these compounds in coastal waters was associated with an increase in bacterioplankton density, suggesting that the degradation takes place because the compound is used as a growth substrate.

Abstract:Tetraalkylammonium-based quaternary ammonium ([R 4 N + ][DHP − ]; R = Ethyl, Propyl, Butyl) salts were synthesized and subjected to in-depth analysis using NMR, FTIR and TG analysis. Subsequent investigations involved examining their impact on the aggregation patterns of the cationic surfactant Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) through the use of conductometry, fluorescence measurements, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. To gain a deeper understanding of the colloidal behavior of CTAB, the critical micelle concentration ( cmc ) of the surfactant was determined, both in the absence and presence of the quaternary ammonium salts. The observed variations in cmc values were attributed to structural changes within the surfactant-water mixture, made by the presence of these additives. In addition, the investigations include thermodynamic analysis, with a focus on studying the dependence of the cmc on temperature. The resultant thermodynamic parameters were utilized to elucidate the contributions of [R 4 N + ][DHP − ], to the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions involved in the formation of surfactant micellar aggregates. Furthermore, the study assessed the impact of [R 4 N + ][DHP − ], on the surfactant's antibacterial activity by quantifying the zone of inhibition, against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial species.

Abstract:Surface tension, micelle formation, surface adsorption, and solubilization of dimethylaminoazobenzene (DMAB) are studied in aqueous solutions of 3-alkoxyl-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (alkoxyl = C n H 2n+1 O, n = 8, 12, 14, 16), of sodium dodecyl sulfonate, and of mixtures of these cationic surfactants and the anionic surfactant at 40°C. Synergistic effects on micelle formation, surface tension reduction, and solubilization enhancement of DMAB are observed in the cationic–anionic mixed surfactant systems. The experimental results are discussed in the light of the interactions between the two kinds of surfactant ions.
Simulation Study on Molecular Behavior of Rhamnolipids and Biobased Zwitterionic Surfactants at the Oil/Water Interface: Effect of Rhamnose Moiety Structures

Abstract:Molecular behavior of rhamnolipid mixed with a biobased zwitterionic surfactant at an n-hexadecane/water interface has been studied, and the effects of a rhamnose moiety and composition are evaluated. Results showed that rhamnolipid abundantly interacts with biobased surfactant EAB by means of hydrophobic interactions between aliphatic tails and electrostatic interactions between headgroups, including the attractive interaction between COO- of rhamnolipids and N+ of biobased surfactants and the repulsive interaction between COO- of both surfactants. Dirhamnolipid has a larger number of bound Na+ and a more stable bound structure of COO- ∼ Na+, which screens the repulsive interaction between two kinds of surfactants and shows a more homogeneous distribution with biobased surfactants. The interfacial tension between n-hexadecane and water has been synergistically reduced by dirhamnolipids mixed with biobased surfactants at a higher molar ratio of biobased surfactants. Monorhamnolipids show a strengthened interaction with N+ of biobased surfactants and a more stable hydrogen bond with water relative to that of dirhamnolipids, and there is no synergistic effect in lowering the interfacial tension for the mixture of monorhamnolipids and biobased surfactants. The present work provides details of the molecular behavior of biosurfactant rhamnolipids mixed with biobased surfactants and obtains the key factor in affecting the interfacial properties of the binary system.

Abstract:The molecular structure of a surfactant molecule is known to have a great effect on the interfacial properties and the type of nanostructures formed. In this work, we have performed molecular dynamics simulations on six isomers of an alkyl benzenesulfonate surfactant to investigate the effect of the degree and position of aromatic substitution on the interfacial properties and on the collapse of the surfactant monolayer at a decane-water interface. The surface pressure of the monolayers was shown to increase with increasing surface coverage, until some of the monolayers become mechanically unstable and form large undulations. Shifting the primary alkyl chain of the surfactant from the para to the meta position was found to significantly affect the orientation of the surfactant head groups, while the attachment position of the benzene ring along the primary alkyl chain plays a greater role in the orientation of the surfactant tails. In general, to the extent considered in this work, our results suggest that additional alkyl substitution and meta substitution of the primary alkyl chains increase both the effectiveness and efficiency of the surfactants, and accelerate the onset of monolayer collapse. The interface was found to consist of an inner Helmholtz layer of partially dehydrated counterions in contact with the surfactant head groups, an outer Helmholtz layer of hydrated counterions, and a diffuse layer. The di- and trisubstituted surfactants formed nearly spherical swollen micelles encapsulating pure decane, which effectively solubilizes decane in water as a microemulsion. The monosubstituted surfactants formed elongated buds that protrude from the interface, but did not detach from the monolayer. To our knowledge, the role of aromatic substitution on interfacial properties has not been investigated by molecular simulations previously. The results from this work could provide insights to design improved surfactants by exploiting aromatic substitution to encapsulate material for drug delivery and other applications.

Abstract:Surface tension of water-air interface can be reduced efficiently by surfactants.Different molecular architectures of a surfactant lead to very different properties.A notable case in point is alkyl benzene sulfonates with different attaching positions of benzene sulfonate on the alkyl backbone.A series of surfactant isomers of the alkyl benzene sulfonates family(-phenylLAS) was investigated here using molecular dynamics simulations.The surface tensions of different concentration were calculated and the microscope structures were analyzed.The simulation results agreed well with experimental observation.The surface tensions strongly depended to the architecture of the surfactant molecules.The closer the phenyl ring was attached to the end of the alkyl chain,the weaker the surface tension reducing ability the surfactant had,and the lower the average covering area of the surfactant was.Analysis of the structures indicated that the properties of the surfactants were also heavily impacted by the chain flexibility and conformation changes of the isomers.

Abstract:Mixed surfactants have potential applications in various fields. The understanding and prediction of their macro- and microscopic properties are of great importance in the designing of these materials. We used molecular dynamics (MD) and experiments to study the interfacial tension and the microscopic structures of the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/C(4)mimBr mixed surfactant at the water/hexane interface. The interfacial tension, density profile, radial distribution function (RDF), orientation distribution of the tails and order parameters have been examined. It seems that the addition of C(4)mimBr decreased the interfacial tension; a higher C(4)mimBr concentration resulted in a thicker interface, a smaller droplet, and more disordered SDS tails. The competition between free volume and electrostatic shielding seems to be the primary mechanism behind these phenomena.

Abstract:In this work, the interaction performances at octadecane oil–water interface were investigated for zwitterionic surfactants of dodecyl dimethyl hydroxypropyl sulfobetaine (HSB-12) and hexadecyl dimethyl hydroxypropyl sulfobetaine (HSB-16) from both experimental and simulation insights. For macroscopic experiment, optical interferometry methodology was developed to real-time measure the interfacial interaction process and obtain the quantitative interfacial thickness and mass results. The four-step dynamic process (diffusion, adsorption, arrangement and aggregation) was characterized by kinetic analysis, indicating arrangement process as slow-limiting step. The rate of the four step process (diffusion rate k1(dif), adsorption rate k2(ads), arrangement rate k3(arr), and aggregation rate k4(agg)) is represented as k3(arr) HSB-12. The free energy of the aggregation stages of HSB-16 and HSB-12 was expressed as ΔGagg(HSB16)=-3.95 kJ/mol < ΔGagg(HSB12)=-3.13kJ/mol. For microscopic simulation, the interaction configurations and interaction energies were obtained through molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) calculation. The interaction stability and interaction strength were indicated to be HSB-16 > HSB-12. The interaction mechanism was explained by proposing molecular-orientation model below critical micelle concentration (CMC) and layer-interaction model above CMC. The different mechanisms were attributed to electronic attraction between surfactant molecules and hydrophobic interaction between surfactant and oil molecules. This work successfully constructs the interfacial platform for oil–water interface analysis, which not only elucidate the surfactant-oil intermolecular interactions but also provide mechanism understanding from macroscopic and microscopic scales.

Abstract:Surfactants play an increasingly important role across diverse scientific and industrial domains. Gaining a deeper understanding of their molecular behavior at various interfaces is thus becoming ever more essential. Despite considerable advances in experimental techniques, challenges in capturing the detailed molecular-level behavior of surfactants at interfaces persist. In this work, we discuss the potential of combining various experimental methods with atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in studies of surfactant interfacial layers. MD simulations have emerged as a powerful tool that provides detailed insights into molecular structures and dynamic properties, some of which are inaccessible through experimental means alone. By re-examining existing MD simulation data and directly comparing them with experiments, we illustrate how MD simulations can be used to validate and support thermodynamic models and interpret spectroscopy and scattering data. While combining scattering experiments on Langmuir layers of insoluble surfactants with simulations seems to be well-established by now, we emphasize the growing capability of scattering techniques to investigate also the more disordered Gibbs layers of soluble surfactants. Here, MD simulations can now connect the pressure and adsorption isotherms with the equation of state. In light of the ongoing parallel developments of computational and experimental methods, their synergistic use can be expected to drive future progress in surfactant research.

Abstract:The oil/water interfacial properties of different zwitterionic surfactant (N-dodecyl-N, N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate, ASB; 3-(1-dodecyl-3- imidazolio)propanesulfonate, ImS3; 3-(1-dodecyl-3-benzimidazolio)propanesulfonate, BzImS3) combined with anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, SDBS) have been studied via experimental and simulation methods. Both experimental and simulation results indicate that the synergistic effect between surfactants is greatly affected by the aromatic cation part of the zwitterionic surfactants. For ASB/SDBS system, the SDBS and ASB molecules are adsorbed at same position of the oil/water interface, which generates competitive adsorption and resulting in a relatively loose surfactant monolayer. For ImS3/SDBS and BzImS3/SDBS systems, the additional π-π stacking interaction increases the compactness of surfactant monolayer, which contributes to the greatly reduced oil/water interfacial tension. The adsorption mechanism of mixed zwitterionic/anionic surfactant systems at oil/water interface is supplemented at a molecular level, which provides a fundamental guidance for an in-depth understanding of optimal selection of surfactant in enhancing oil recovery.

Abstract:In the present work, the interaction of sodium dodecyl sulfate and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide surfactants with amantadine drug in aqueous solutions was studied using conductometric measurements and molecular dynamic simulation. Conductometric data were used to determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of surfactants on various amantadine aqueous solutions at T= (300.2, 310.2 and 320.2) K and 0.1 MPa. The effect of amantadine concentration (m = 0.0005, 0.0010, 0.0015 and 0.002 mol.kg −1 ) on CMC of sodium dodecyl sulfate and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide surfactants was investigated. It was observed the CMC value of sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant increases with increasing of amantadine concentration whereas the CMC values of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide surfactant decrease with increasing of amantadine concentration at the same temperature. Then, the thermodynamic properties such as standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy for micellization in aqueous solutions were determined. In addition, molecular dynamic simulation was carried out to understand the interaction sodium dodecyl sulfate and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide surfactants with amantadine at the molecular level and microscopic interactions. The root-mean-square deviations and electrostatic, hydrogen binding and hydrophobic interactions were determined by MD simulations. It was seen, the electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions play a crucial role in sodium dodecyl sulfate and amantadine aqueous system. Surface Activity and Micellization Parameters of Quaternary Ammonium Surfactants Containing A Hydroxyethyl Group

Abstract:Based on the measurements of conductivity and surface tension and our previously reported results of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), the surface activity and micellization parameters, such as the critical micellar concentration (CMC), the degree of counterion dissociation (beta), and thermodynamic functions of micellization, for six quaternary ammonium surfactants, dodecyl-(2-hydroxyethyl)-dimethylazanium bromide, tetradecyl-(2-hydroxyethyl)-dimethylazanium bromide, hexadecyl-(2-hydroxyethyl)-dimethylazanium bromide, dodecyl-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-methylazanium bromide, tetradecyl-di(2-hydroxyethyl)methylazanium bromide, and hexadecyl-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-methylazanium bromide in aqueous solutions have been investigated. The values of CMC determined from three different methods are compared, and they show reasonable agreement. From the CMC values obtained from the conductivity measurements in this work and the previously reported values of calorimetric enthalpy of micellization, the Gibbs free energy (Delta G(mic)) and entropy (Delta S-mic) of micellization are calculated through the mass-action model. The influences on the micellization parameters of the temperature, the length of attune chain, and the number of hydroxyethyl substituents on the surfactant headgroup are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Two surfactants, namely, dodecanoylglycinate and dodecanoylsarcosinate, differing only in a methyl group vs . a hydrogen atom on the amide nitrogen, have been studied with respect to solution behavior and adsorption at the air–water, oil-water and calcium carbonate-water interfaces. It was found that the ability of the glycinate surfactant of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds via the amide group leads to tighter molecular packing, which greatly influenced the behavior at interfaces. Based on this molecular observation, potential applications were considered and emulsification, foaming and wetting tests were carried out. It could be concluded from this work that a minor change in the structure of a surfactant molecule can be very significant for technological systems and processes.
