Abstract:Herein, bright green luminescent graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (GCNQDs) doped with oxygen and sulfur are prepared simply by microwave treatment of citric acid and thiourea. The as -obtained GCNQDs show excitation wavelength and pH dependent luminescence behaviors in the visible range. Besides, the GCNQDs exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield (31.67%), strong resistance to the interference of high ionic strength environment, and good biocompatibility as demonstrated by the cell viability assay. Thus, the resulting GCNQDs can be used as a promising fluorescent probe for HeLa cell imaging with low cytotoxicity, and have great potential in bioanalysis and related fields. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:This study delves into the green synthesis and multifaceted applications of three types of carbon quantum dots (CQDs), namely, CQDs-1, CQDs-2, and CQDs-3. These CQDs were innovatively produced through a gentle pyrolysis process from distinct plant-based precursors: genipin with glucose for CQDs-1, genipin with extracted gardenia seeds for CQDs-2, and genipin with whole gardenia seeds for CQDs-3. Advanced analytical techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), were employed to detail the CQDs' structural and surface characteristics, revealing their unique functional groups and surface chemistries. The study further explores the CQDs' bioimaging potential, where confocal fluorescence microscopy evidenced their swift uptake by Escherichia coli bacteria, indicating their suitability for bacterial imaging. These CQDs were also applied in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), acting as reducing agents and stabilizers. Among these, CQD3-AuNPs were distinguished by their remarkable stability and catalytic efficiency, achieving a 99.7% reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in just 10 min and maintaining near-complete reduction efficiency (99.6%) after 60 days. This performance notably surpasses that of AuNPs synthesized using sodium citrate, underscoring the exceptional capabilities of CQD3-AuNPs. These insights pave the way for leveraging CQDs and CQD-stabilized AuNPs in bacterial imaging and catalysis, presenting valuable directions for future scientific inquiry and practical applications.

Abstract:In this research work, carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized from the renewable leaves of an indigenous medicinal plant by the one-pot sand bath method, Azadirachta indica . The synthesized CDs were characterized for its optical properties using UV–Vis, Fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometry and for structural properties using dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and high resolution Transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The synthesized CDs exhibited concentration dependent biocompatibility when tested in mouse fibroblast L929 cell line. The EC 50 values of biomedical studies, free radical scavenging activity (13.87 μgmL −1 ), and total antioxidant capacity (38 μgmL −1 ) proved CDs were exceptionally good. These CDs showed an appreciable zone of inhibition when examined on four bacterial (two gram-positive and gram-negative) and two fungal strains at minimum concentrations. Cellular internalisation studies performed on human breast cancer cells (MCF 7- bioimaging) revealed the applicability of CDs in bioimaging, wherein the inherent fluorescence of CDs were utilised. Thus, the CDs developed are potential as bioimaging, antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.

Abstract:Blue fluorescent carbon dots are synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using rosemary leaves as a carbon source. The obtained carbon dots are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectrometry. The results show that carbon dots gave a maximum emission peak at 422 nm when excited at 332 nm. The average particle diameter of the synthesized spherical carbon dots is found to be 16.13 nm with a 4.6-nm standard deviation. The diameters of the produced carbon dots vary, as is evident from standard deviation heights, resulting in multicolor emission spectra. The fruit storage experiment is carried out by investigating the qualitative antioxidant ability of the produced carbon dots. The results obtained for polyvinyl alcohol–carbon dot–coated samples differ remarkably compared to polyvinyl alcohol–coated samples only. The polyvinyl alcohol–carbon dot composition is used in latent fingerprint detection applications. In analyses made on a glass surface, fingerprints cannot be monitored on the glass surface with the polyvinyl alcohol layer under ultraviolet light, while they are observed on the surface covered with the polyvinyl alcohol–carbon dot composition. Moreover, biological activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and yeast strains are investigated.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with advantages including excellent biocompatibility, low cost, and easy modification make them highly promising for applications in biological imaging. Here, we successfully synthesized dark green fluorescent CDs (g-CDs) using trinitropyrene as a carbon source and 2,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid as the reactant in one-pot synthesis. The results revealed that the g-CDs had an average uniform particle size of 4.93 nm, with a structure similar to graphite. The g-CDs imparted excellent water-solubility due to the presence of hydrophilic groups. The g-CDs exhibited an optimal fluorescence emission wavelength of 512 nm in acetone solvent, with a maximum quantum yield of 38.4%. When transferred into a normal saline solution, the g-CDs retained their green fluorescence, with the optimal fluorescence emission wavelength shifting to 505 nm. Notably, we observed a significant increase in fluorescence intensity and maximum quantum yield of up to 79.4% when the g-CDs were dissolved in a polar solvent. Furthermore, in vitro fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated rapid cell entry, excellent fluorescence performance, high biocompatibility, and universality of the g-CDs. These findings underscore the high hydrophobicity and biocompatibility of our newly designed g-CDs, thus highlighting their immense potential as fluorescent probes in bioimaging and disease tracing applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots have stimulated the curiosity of biomedical researchers due to their unique properties, such as less toxicity and high biocompatibility. The synthesis of carbon dots for biomedical application is a core area in research. In the current research, an eco-friendly hydrothermal technique was employed to synthesize high fluorescent, plant-derived carbon dots from Prosopis juliflora leaves extract (PJ-CDs). The synthesized PJ-CDs were investigated by physicochemical evaluation instruments such as fluorescence spectroscopy, SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR, and UV-Vis. The UV-Vis absorption peaks obtained at 270 nm due to carbonyl functional groups shifts of n→π*. In addition, a quantum yield of 7.88 % is achieved. The synthesized PJ-CDs showing the presence of carious functional groups O–H, C–H, C=O, O–H, C–N and the obtained particles in spherical shape with an average size of 8 nm. The fluorescence PJ-CDs showed stability against various environmental factors such as a broad range of ionic strength and pH gradient. The antimicrobial activity of PJ-CDs was tested against a Staphylococcus aureus , and a Escherichia coli . The results suggest that the PJ-CDs could substantially inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus . The findings also indicate that PJ-CDs are effective materials for bio-imaging in Caenorhabditis elegans and they can be also used for pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are attracting increasing research attention due to their exceptional attributes, including their biocompatibility, water solubility, minimal toxicity, high photoluminescence, and easy functionalization. Green CDs, derived from natural sources such as fruits and vegetables, present advantages over conventionally produced CDs, such as cost-effectiveness, stability, simplicity, safety, and environmental friendliness. Various methods, including hydrothermal and microwave treatments, are used to synthesize green CDs, which demonstrate strong biocompatibility, stability, and luminescence. These properties give green CDs versatility in their biological applications, such as bioimaging, biosensing, and drug delivery. This review summarizes the prevalent synthesis methods and renewable sources regarding green CDs; examines their optical features; and explores their extensive biological applications, including in bioimaging, biosensing, drug/gene delivery, antimicrobial and antiviral effects, formatting of mathematical components, cancer diagnosis, and pharmaceutical formulations.
Green synthesis of N,S-doped carbon dots for tartrazine detection and their antibacterial activities

Abstract:A simple, green and low-cost method was developed for the synthesis of highly fluorescent N,S-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) via the hydrothermal treatment of Gandha Prasarini (GP) leaves as a natural source of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur. The as-prepared N,S-CDs exhibited excitation-dependent green fluorescence emission (λex = 450 nm, λem = 525 nm) with excellent stability, and were used as a fluorescent probe for the selective detection of tartrazine with a limit of detection of 0.18 μM. The fluorescence quenching of N,S-CDs was due to the inner filter effect. The developed method has been employed for the determination of tartrazine in honey and soft drinks with satisfactory recovery ranging from 92 to 110.2%. In addition, the antibacterial activity of the N,S-CDs was explored against both Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), and Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The antibacterial mechanism of the N,S-CDs was investigated. The results indicated that the antibacterial activity was due to the membrane damage of the bacteria by the N,S-CDs. Besides, the N,S-CDs showed negligible lytic effects on human erythrocytes. These findings will inspire further exploitation of CD-based nano-bactericides in biomedical applications.
One-Step Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots with Antibacterial Activity Based on Andrographolide

Abstract:The increasing use of antibiotics to treat bacteria has led to the emergence of many resistant bacteria. Therefore, it is crucial to research novel antibiotics and understand how they are used to combat bacteria. In this study, a green, effective, and ecologically acceptable hydrothermal approach was used to efficiently convert andrographolide and citric acid into carbon dots with vivid blue fluorescence and an emission wavelength of 430 nm. TEM, AFM, FT-IR, and XPS were used to analyze the surface morphology, particle size distribution, and surface functional groups of carbon dots. It was discovered that carbon quantum dots had different functional groups linked to the surface and had a common particle dimension of 2.75 nm. Additionally, it was unexpectedly discovered that carbon quantum dots confirmed great antibacterial motion in opposition to both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), with a MIC of 1.14 mg/mL. Carbon quantum dots have a positive charge of 16 eV, which can connect to the bacterial cell wall and destroy the normal form of bacteria by generating 1O2, causing antibacterial effects, according to research on the antibacterial mechanism of carbon dots.

Abstract:In the field of nanoscience and nanobiotechnology, the use of plant extracts in synthesising metal sulphide nanoparticles has lately come to light as an intriguing issue with several benefits over traditional physicochemical methods. Herein, bio-mediated novel β-In 2 S 3 quantum dots were fabricated using Camellia sinensis var. assamica (tea) leaf extract as a stabilising and capping agent through a facile solvothermal technique to evaluate the photocatalytic and antioxidant characteristics. The prepared green β-In 2 S 3 quantum dots (g-β-In 2 S 3 ), having a bandgap of 2.0 eV, were employed for the degradation of three major categories of dyes Xanthane (Rhodamine B), Triphenylmethane (Malachite Green), and Azo (Biebrich Scarlet). It also showed excellent antioxidant properties compared to standard ascorbic acid and pure chemically synthesised β-In 2 S 3 . The g-β-In 2 S 3 quantum dots were characterised for their crystal structure, morphology, surface functional groups, charge recombination delay, and chemical composition using XRD, PL, FTIR, UV-DRS, SEM, TEM, and XPS analyses. The fabricated material showed high crystallinity of 77.17%, a particle size of 6.97 nm, and spherical morphology. The greenly synthesised β-In 2 S 3 displayed enhanced photocatalytic performance, indicating that bio-synthesis can be a superb method to create flexible and environmentally friendly goods. About 75.28 ± 1.69%, 72.31 ± 1.43%, and 62.21 ± 1.14% for Rhodamine B, Malachite Green, and Biebrich Scarlet could be degraded within 60 min of visible light irradiation via β-In 2 S 3 /H 2 O 2 system. The kinetics and the mechanism of the degradation of dyes by g-β-In 2 S 3 are also discussed. This work highlighted the potential of g-β-In 2 S 3 quantum dots for enhanced visible light, advanced oxidation process-assisted degradation of dyes, and outstanding antioxidant properties.

Abstract:Carbon dots synthesized from a renewable and sustainable source of biomass have greater attention in the nanomaterial research field. In the present study, we adopted a facile and green synthesis of carbon dots from bio waste of pumpkin seeds using a one-pot microwave-assisted carbonization method. The synthesized carbon dots exhibit excellent photoluminescence properties with a bright blue emission peak at 399 nm and fluorescence quantum yield was about 9.5%. The optical properties and structure of carbon dots were examined using various spectroscopy techniques and the synthesized carbon practical size was about 4.37 nm and possessed good solubility in water. Carbon dots were used for the detection of Ferric ions in the water bodies and the interaction between Fe 3+ ions and carbon dots was evaluated by fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. This method is a simple and selective detection of Fe 3+ in the aqueous medium. Interestingly carbon dots also show good antibacterial activity at a very low concentration (1 mg/L) for effective control of E . coli 93% and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (81%), within 12 h.

Abstract:Now-a-days, synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) from renewable sources has attracted considerable attention due to their wide spread availability, lower cost, higher aqueous solubility and more biocompatibility. Here, we have synthesized water soluble CDs with size between 1 and 4 nm from the root extract of red Korean ginseng via simple microwave irradiation. The CDs showed excitation-dependent fluorescence emission and used as a bioimaging agent. The CDs were further loaded with a natural flavonoid, Rutin to check its efficacy as a drug delivery system. The CDs showed a drug loading content of 12.7 % and a sustained drug release behavior at physiological conditions. CDs showed excellent free radical scavenging activity both in cell free systems and intra-cellular conditions. Besides, loading with the drug further improved the intra-cellular radical scavenging activity. The CDs and the nanohybrids (Rutin-loaded CDs) displayed very little toxicity upto the concentration of 100 μg/mL in normal kidney epithelial cells. The CDs and the nanohybrids also showed a dose-dependent antibacterial effect against both gram negative as well as gram positive bacteria under light exposure as well as dark conditions due to membrane damage. However; under light exposure, the antibacterial activity of CDs and the nanohybrids was further increased due to the production of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent DNA damage. Overall, our synthesized green CDs can be considered as a promising candidate for the biomedical applications due to its facile synthesis, low cytotoxicity, excellent fluorescent properties and potential as drug delivery systems.

Abstract:N atural plants and Chinese herbal medicines are valuable resources. It is one of the new tasks for medical workers to study the new application fields of these resources. In this work, one kind of traditional Chinese herbal plant, Alisma, was chosen as a carbon source to synthesize the carbon dots(CDs). This kind of CDs has an amorphous carbon structure and shows strong stability to time, temperature, and ion strength. The results show that the degradation efficiency of malachite green dye can reach 100% in 4.5 h without illumination, and the degradation efficiency is better than that in dark environment. In addition, the CDs have also been successfully applied to HeLa cell imaging. Simple synthesis method, stable properties, good photodegradation and bioimaging applications make this material of great application value.

Abstract:In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared using a one-step hydrothermal green synthesis method from a low-cost and eco-friendly renewable biomass, specifically the Ficus benghalensis aerial roots (FB-AR). For the past two decades, CQDs have been noted for their tunable emission spectrum, quantum yield, biocompatibility, photostability, and unique optoelectronic properties such as photoluminescence (PL), and fluorescence. The synthesized Ficus benghalensis carbon quantum dots (FB-CQDs) were characterized for their physical, structural, and chemical properties using XRD, Raman, HRTEM, XPS, FTIR, TG-DTG, UV-visible, and photoluminance analysis. XPS analysis confirmed the presence of phytoconstituent functionalities and the composition of components. The FB-CQDs, which exhibit long-range emissions, have potential applications in various biological and therapeutic fields. Their bioimaging capability is tested in Escherichia coli bacteria. However, despite their promising characteristics, the FB-CQDs showed no antibacterial inhibition against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , likely due to its carbonization temperature.

Abstract:Abstract The sulfur-selenium doped carbon quantum dots (S,Se-CQDs) were synthesized by one-step through hydrothermal method in this study, which have high fluorescence quantum yield (43%) and advanced ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). They were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the clearance rate of free radical reached to 40% with 200 μg/mL of S,Se-CQDs. The antioxidant activity of S,Se-CQDs is related to -SH and Se-SH on carbon quantum dots. S,Se-CQDs were able to access to cells which is beneficial to enhance the removal efficiency to ROS. In the biocompatibility experiment, the cell survival rate exceeded 95%, there was little effect on hatching rate, survival rate and heart rate of zebrafish which demonstrated that S,Se-CQDs have an excellent biocompatibility. It prompts that S,Se-CQDs will has proud application prospects in the field of biomedicine.

Abstract:A hydrothermal method was employed for green synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots (GCDs) from Annona squamosa leaves. The synthesized GCDs were confirmed by microscopic and spectroscopic techniques such as: High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), UV–Vis spectrometry, Fluorescence spectrometry, X-Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The produced GCDs had shown multiple properties, including massive antibacterial activity at concentration 200 μg/ml. The stabilization of human red blood cells served as a method to assess the anti-inflammatory activity. We also looked at how GCDs affected the angiogenesis process. The density of blood vessels was significantly decreased after treatment with GCDs, according to the results of the Chorio-Allantoic Membrane assay ( p < 0.05). As per the study prepared GCDs from fallen leaves of Annona squamosa have multifunctional applications.

Green synthesis of fluorescent N-doped carbon quantum dots from castor seeds and their applications in cell imaging and pH sensing

Abstract:Water-soluble fluorescent N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were hydrothermally prepared through a green synthesis route using castor seeds as a single precursor and a hydrothermal method. Several experimental techniques have been used to characterize synthesized N-CQDs to confirm their structure and to verify their applicability in cell imaging and pH sensing. The synthesized N-CQDs were found to have are characterized by amorphous nature with a spherical shape with an average particle size of 6.57 nm as revealed from XRD and TEM measurements. The FTIR results reveal the presence of carboxylic and hydroxyl functional groups on the surface of the CQDs, which was also confirmed by XPS analysis. The fluorescence characterization of the synthesized N-CQDs showed blue emission and excitation dependence with good photostability. It was found that the optimal excitation and emission wavelengths were (λ Ex = 360) and (λ Em = 432) nm, respectively. The fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of about 9.6% at the optimum excitation wavelength 360 nm. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity of N-CQDs showed good linear dependence with the pH values in ranges of 3.5 − 7.5 and 8 − 12 as well as high sensitivity for slight changes of pH values. According to these results, two fluorescent pH sensors were created based on acidic and basic media. The obtained N-CQDs have zeta potential of -21.86 mV and thus have excellent stability in water. Moreover, N-CQDs derived from the castor seeds have antimicrobial activity and exhibits low cytotoxicity to WI-13 cells with IC 50 = 394.4 ± 13.8 μg/mL. The results of this study demonstrated that the synthesized N-CQDs derived from castor seeds can be used as pH sensing and antimicrobial materials. On the other hand, they are also promising in applications in cell imaging, thermo-sensing and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Low-dimensional (<10 nm) semiconductor carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely used in metal ion sensing and bioimaging. Here, we used the renewable resource Curcuma zedoaria as a carbon source and prepared green carbon quantum dots with good water solubility by a hydrothermal method without any chemical reagent. At different pH values (4–6) and high NaCl concentrations, the photoluminescence of the CQDs was very stable, which indicated that they were suitable for a wide range of applications even under harsh conditions. The CQDs exhibited fluorescence quenching in the presence of Fe 3+ ions, indicating their application potential as fluorescence probes for the sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ ions. The CQDs showed high photostability, low cytotoxicity, and good hemolytic activity, and were successfully applied to bioimaging experiments, i.e. multicolor cell imaging in L-02 (human normal hepatocytes) and CHL (Chinese hamster lung) cells with and without Fe 3+ , as well as wash-free labeling imaging of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . The CQDs also showed good free radical scavenging activity and demonstrated a protective effect against photooxidative damage to L-02 cells. These results indicate that CQDs obtained from medicinal herb sources have multiple potential applications in the fields of sensing, bioimaging, and even disease diagnosis.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots with good biocompatibility can be used as nanomaterial carriers to improve the bioavailability of curcumin. In this paper, green tea was used as raw material to provide a green synthesis method for preparing carbon dots nanoparticles, and Curcumin was loaded to prepare carbon quantum dots/Curcumin nanocomposites (CQDs/Cur). A series of characterization methods were used to study the morphology and chemical structure of composite nanoparticles. The tea carbon dots had the characteristics of excitation wavelength dependence, salt solution stability and light stability. Finally, the antioxidant activities of CQDs/Cur nanocomposites were investigated by DPPH, ABTS •+ , hydroxyl radical, metal ion chelating and reducing power assays. The compound system not only improved the antioxidant performance of curcumin, but also retained the antibacterial activity of curcumin. These results suggested that tea carbon quantum dots loaded with curcumin had the potential to be developed as natural antioxidants and antibacterial agents.
