Abstract:As one of the three major components of woody biomass, lignin is a kind of natural organic polymer and the only abundant natural renewable resource with aromatic nucleus. Chemical catalysis induced depolymerization is an important and effective approach for lignin utilization. In particular, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis show great potential in accurately activating C–O/C–C bonds, which is a critical point of selective cleavage of lignin. In this contribution, we focus on radical and (photo)electron transfer induced reaction mechanisms of the photo(electro)catalytic depolymerization of lignin. Primarily, the general situation of Carbon-centered radicals and active oxygen species mediated lignin conversion has been discussed. Then the mechanisms for (photo)electron transfer mediated lignin depolymerization have been summarized. At the end of this review, the challenges and opportunities of photo(electro)catalysis in the applications of lignin valorization have been forecasted.

Abstract:Lignin, as the only non-petrochemical resource in nature that can provide renewable aromatic-based compounds, has a complex and recalcitrant structure. Photocatalysis has received increasing attention in recent years due to its ability to cleave the C–O and C–C bonds of lignin under mild conditions. Herein, the lignin's composition and structure, lignin photocatalytic depolymerization substrates, multiphase photocatalyst, and photocatalytic selective depolymerization are presented, among which, the focus is on metal oxide, nitride, and sulfide multiphase photocatalysts through heterojunction construction, doping, defect and morphology modulation strategies to improve the performance of photocatalysis. Reaction pathways and reaction mechanisms involved in the photocatalytic process were also further analyzed to facilitate the understanding of the relationship between the photocatalyst composition structure and its performance, to better design high-performance photocatalysts and rational experimental procedures. In addition, certain sulfide photocatalysts can achieve both lignin degradation and H 2 generation, to enhance the higher output value of biomass resourcing.

Abstract:Lignin is the unique, renewable and natural aromatic polymer. The efficient transformation of lignin into phenolic monomers and other high value-added chemicals such as hydrocarbons has long been regarded as an important comprehensive utilization approach. In this paper, we focused on the basic structure and the main treatment technologies of this aromatic material. The recent progress in the catalytic thermal depolymerization and hydrogenolysis were reviewed intensively. The catalytic mechanism for the degradation of lignin characteristic chemical bond β-O-4 was also given. Furthermore, the current technique challenges were summarized. Moreover, future technologic explorations for the efficient application of lignin were proposed.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant aromatic polymer naturally produced in the world. Conversion of lignin by depolymerization to aromatic monomers has attracted more and more interest in recent years. The electro-oxidative depolymerization of lignin with renewable electricity pertains to be a versatile and sustainable method because it can be performed under relatively mild conditions and it is easy to control the reaction degree. In this work, we have reviewed recent research progress in the electro-oxidative depolymerization of lignin for value-added products, focusing on the catalysts, electrodes, processes, electrocatalytic systems and additives, as well as the challenges faced in potential application of the technologies. It is recommended that more efficient electrocatalysts should be developed with regards to activity, selectivity and stability for direct use in the electro-oxidative depolymerization of lignin. New technology with less pollution and high selectivity should be developed for efficient recovery and purification of target aromatic products from the mixture of various degradation products. Understanding of the mechanisms of lignin depolymerization by electro-oxidation should be deepened, which will guide the design of catalysts and processes for increasing the yield of the desired target product.

Abstract:Lignin valorization via thermochemical approaches has the potential to produce renewable fuels and value-added chemicals, which are of great significance to the sustainable development of human beings. During the thermochemical depolymerization which involves acid-catalyzed, alkali-catalyzed, oxidative, reductive, pyrolytic, and other reactions, the lignin structure will undergo a series of bond cleavage, condensation, and functional group changes, while the mechanism is still unclear. To improve the efficiency, the analysis of the evolution of intermediates during depolymerization is very important, among which soft ionization mass spectrometry plays a vital role. This review aims to summarize the research progress of process analysis of lignin depolymerization in both gas-phase, typically thermal and catalytic pyrolysis, and liquid-phase via online mass spectrometry. The challenges and our insights into the future development of the lignin valorization as well as soft ionization mass spectrometry methods are also discussed.

Abstract:The effective utilization of lignin, a complex and abundant biopolymer in biomass, holds great potential for sustainable biomass conversion and the development of renewable resources. This study focuses on the catalytic oxidative transformation of lignin, aiming to unravel its structural features and their impact on product diversity. The significance of the content of β-O-4 linkages in lignin becomes evident as a crucial factor influencing the yield of phenolic monomer products, emphasizing its utmost importance. Additionally, the presence of S-type structural units in lignin positively influences its catalytic conversion efficiency, as evidenced by higher S/G ratios and increased degradation yields. However, the complex nature of lignin, influenced by growth environment and pretreatment methods, presents challenges for its efficient depolymerization and utilization. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of lignin's structure is crucial for advancing its effective utilization and the development of renewable resources. This research elucidates the catalytic conversion mechanisms of lignin, providing practical implications for promoting the utilization of renewable resources in relevant fields.

Abstract:Lignin, as an intriguing native renewable aromatic polymer, can be depolymerized into aromatic platform chemicals by catalysis procedures, and its high-value conversion is of great significance for realizing the green and sustainable production of biofuels, fine chemicals, and bulk chemicals. With this regard, catalytic oxidation of lignin through electrochemistry offers an economized energy nature with tunable potential or current to determine the products selectivity and conversion rate. However, to realize the controllable degradation of lignin, the electrocatalytic system, including the catalysts, electrolyte, reaction cell, etc., should be rationally designed based on the well-understanding of the depolymerization mechanism. In this review, we focused on the bond cleavage mechanism of C—C bond and C—O bond, respectively, in the depolymerization of lignin. Research works based on the different bond cleavage mechanisms in the electrochemical oxidation of lignin and its model compounds to aromatic monomers in recent years were reviewed here, including the different types of catalytic systems, electrocatalysts, and free radical initiators. Of which the free radical intermediates play decisive role in the highly selective cleavage of C—O and C—C bonds. Finally, the challenges and development perspectives in the future of electrocatalytic lignin depolymerization are also provided.

Abstract:Lignin, with its rich reserves of phenolic compounds, holds great promise as a candidate for renewable energy and valuable chemical production. However, the complex molecular structure and low reactivity of lignin have impeded progress in this research direction. Consequently, the depolymerization of lignin into high-value small-molecule chemicals has become a new area of focus. Metal and metal oxides have emerged as a promising catalyst to overcome this obstacle due to their high selectivity in depolymerizing lignin and the mild reaction conditions required. This paper reviews the properties, and products of various metal and metal oxides used for lignin depolymerization under microwave, pyrolysis, hydrogenolysis, and oxidation conditions. The research prospects and challenges of metal oxide degradation of lignin are summarized to pave the way for future applications and development of lignin depolymerization.

Abstract:Depolymerization of lignin can convert its macromolecules towards smaller molecules (monomers or oligomers) allowing it to be used for further applications. Electrochemical depolymerization is an excellent method of green and sustainable transformation, which can effectively avoid reagent waste and mild reaction. This review pretents the research progress of lignin electrochemical oxidation in recent years, summarizes the effects of solvent system(alkaline solvent, ionic liquid and deep eutectic solvents, as well as different lignin concentration and medium), electrode materials(platinum, gold, copper, nickel, cobalt, lead dioxide, tin dioxide and titanium based metal electrodes) and electrolytic parameters (current density, temperature, reaction time and photocatalysis) on the oxidative degradation efficiency and product distribution of lignin, and prospects its development.

Abstract:As the only natural source of aromatic biopolymers, lignin can be converted into value-added chemicals and biofuels, showing great potential in realizing the development of green chemistry. At present, lignin is predominantly used for combustion to generate energy, and the real value of lignin is difficult to maximize. Accordingly, the depolymerization of lignin is of great significance for its high-value utilization. This review discusses the latest progress in the field of lignin depolymerization, including catalytic conversion systems using various thermochemical, chemocatalytic, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and biological depolymerization methods, as well as the involved reaction mechanisms and obtained products of various protocols, focusing on green and efficient lignin depolymerization strategies. In addition, the challenges faced by lignin depolymerization are also expounded, putting forward possible directions of developing lignin depolymerization strategies in the future.

Abstract:Lignin, an underutilized component of lignocellulosic biomass, is regarded as a rich reservoir for the production of aromatic chemicals and fuels. Despite extensive research in recent years, lignin's potential is far from being fully unlocked. Photocatalysis that uses sustainable solar energy to drive lignin conversion under mild conditions has been identified as a promising strategy and received growing research interest. This review aims to present a critical introduction to the photocatalytic conversion of lignin, including a summary of lignin conversion pathways and mechanisms, as well as the latest cutting-edge innovations on photocatalyst design and reactor construction. Moreover, the screening of solvents and regulation of other key factors that are involved in photocatalytic lignin conversion are also elucidated and future perspectives and challenges for photocatalytic conversion of lignin into valuable products are discussed.

Abstract:This article reviewed recent development of chemical depolymerization of lignins. There were five types of treatment discussed, including base-catalyzed, acid-catalyzed, metallic catalyzed, ionic liquids-assisted, and supercritical fluids-assisted lignin depolymerizations. The methods employed in this research were described, and the important results were marked. Generally, base-catalyzed and acid-catalyzed methods were straightforward, but the selectivity was low. The severe reaction conditions (high pressure, high temperature, and extreme pH) resulted in requirement of specially designed reactors, which led to high costs of facility and handling. Ionic liquids, and supercritical fluids-assisted lignin depolymerizations had high selectivity, but the high costs of ionic liquids recycling and supercritical fluid facility limited their applications on commercial scale biomass treatment. Metallic catalyzed depolymerization had great advantages because of its high selectivity to certain monomeric compounds and much milder reaction condition than base-catalyzed or acid-catalyzed depolymerizations. It would be a great contribution to lignin conversion if appropriate catalysts were synthesized.
Photocatalytic Depolymerization of Lignin to Produce High Value-Added Chemicals by Carbon Quantum Dots Modified WO3 Nanosheets

Abstract:Photocatalysis, a sustainable development strategy, employed to produce value-added chemicals from lignin, has attracted much attention due to its low energy consumption and mild reaction conditions. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and tungsten oxide (WO3) composite photocatalysts (CQDs/WO3) were prepared by ultrasonic assisted wet impregnation method in this study. The CQDs/WO3 nanosheets exhibit good optical properties and satisfactory performance of lignin depolymerization. Characterization results embody that the addition of CQDs significantly changes the morphology of WO3. Compared with bulk pure WO3, CQDs/WO3 becomes a nanosheet structure in the size of similar to 200 nm. Furthermore, CQDs can absorb photogenerated electrons as well as reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. The strong oxidizing ability of n-type semiconductor WO3 enables it to effectively break the typical bonds like C-O or C-C near polar functional groups in lignin. Due to this ingenious design, dealkaline lignin conversion was up to 34.21% as well as the highest yields of vanillin and vanillic acid in the form of lignin were 24.74 mg/g and 8.02 mg/g in 2 h at room temperature, visible light illumination and air atmosphere, respectively. And optimized CQDs/WO3 also had satisfactory effects on three natural lignin (grass lignin, pine lignin and birch lignin), which proved its universality. Electron spin resonance experiments and mechanism investigation demonstrated that O-center dot(2)- and (OH)-O-center dot play a weighty role in photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin. This study provides a new gambit for converting lignin to high value-added chemicals (vanillin and vanillic acid) over modified WO3.

Abstract:Lignin is a type of natural aromatic material with potential application prospects obtained from lignocellulosic biomass. Recently, the valorization of lignin has received increasing attention from both industry and academia. However, there is still a challenge in the efficient valorization of lignin due to the complexity and stability of the lignin structure. Recent work has been focused on the catalytic depolymerization of lignin to explore a promising and efficient way to valorize lignin into chemicals with high value and biofuels. Considerable research has focused on catalysts, solvents, and reaction parameters during the lignin depolymerization process, which significantly affects product distribution and productivity. Thus, in a catalytic depolymerization process, both catalysts and solvents have a significant influence on the depolymerization effect. This review article assesses the current status of the catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin, mainly focusing on the solvents and catalysts during the reaction. First, various solvents applied in the lignin depolymerization reactions are extensively overviewed. Second, the recent progress of metal catalysts as well as their supports is summarized. Furthermore, a discussion of the challenges and prospects in this area is included.

Abstract:Lignin is a renewable and available resource rich in aromatic rings. Abundant waste lignin can be produced from the pulp and paper industry as well as bioethanol technology derived from enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose. However, the lignin conversion is as low as 2%. From the viewpoint of resource utilization and environmental conservation, the importance of efficient use of lignin, especially of waste lignin, should be addressed. The research progress on converting of lignin is relatively slow in the last decades, and the main techniques include catalytic cracking, hydrolysis, (sulfur-containing or sulfur-free) metals catalyzed reduction and oxidation. After depolymerization, the further upgrading of derived phenolic fragments uses (sulfur-containing or sulfur-free) metals to remove the oxygens to form the final alkanes and aromatics. The purpose of this review is to summary the progress of depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation of lignin such as catalysts, reaction conditions, reaction mechanisms, deactivation of catalysts. We also present the suggestions and outlooks concerning on the current techniques and further directions towards key researches.
Exploration of Microwave Absorptivity and Catalysis of CMF@Co-MoS2 for Microwave-Initiated Depolymerization of Lignin

Abstract:Obtaining key platform chemicals from lignin is a sustainable refining concept of the non-petroleum route. Rapid pyrolysis is a potential refining technology, and microwave-assisted catalytic depolymerization with low energy consumption is preferred. Herein, we reported the strategy of microwave-initiated depolymerization using a self-designed dynamic vapor flow reaction system with a facilely prepared CMF@Co-MoS2-0.18 catalyst, achieving efficient conversion of lignin (Dealkalize) to monophenol. Under constant microwave irradiation (2.45 GHz), the CMF@Co-MoS2-0.18 catalyst had excellent dielectric properties (Dielectric loss factor: 0.56) and microwave heating properties (∼140 s rise to ∼ 600℃). Therefore, microwave-initiated depolymerization of lignin showed that the CMF@Co-MoS2-0.18 catalyst can improve the monophenol content (54.72 %) and phenol selectivity (35.84 %) under the synergistic effect of microwave absorptivity and catalysis. The reaction of the lignin model and kinetics analysis show that the CMF@Co-MoS2-0.18 catalyst increases the yield of monophenol by reducing depolymerization activation energy and selectively breaking the β-O-4 bond. The finite element analysis pointed out that under microwave irradiation, CMF@Co-MoS2-0.18 continuously conducted heat to lignin and the lignin vapor would have sufficient energy to collide with the catalyst active site at a high frequency, which led to an increase in the pre-exponential factor and initiated catalytic depolymerization lignin. In summary, we provide a potential pathway for the rapid conversion of lignin into key platform chemicals.
Fabrication of Z-scheme CdS/H5PMo10V2O40/g-C3N4 for the photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin into aromatic monomers

Abstract:As the most abundant resource composed of aromatic groups in nature, lignin harbors significant potential for the production of bio-based fuels and chemicals. In recent years, solar-driven photocatalysis with its mild, low cost and environmental benign, has been employed for lignin depolymerization. Herein, we designed a Z-scheme CdS/H5PMo10V2O40/g-C3N4 (CdS/HPA-2/CN) photocatalyst via hydrothermal method for the photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin. The prepared CdS/HPA-2/CN presents a nanoflower-like morphology with the average diameter of ∼600 nm. With the presence of electron-mediated HPA-2, CdS/HPA-2/CN exhibits the enhanced separation and transfer capacity of photogenerated charge carriers through Z-scheme mechanism. Result shows that the total yield (Y) of vanillin and vanillic acid from lignin depolymerization over optimized CdS/HPA-2/CN can reach to 32.7 mg/g lignin in DMF/formic acid (v/v = 40/10) for 4 h. Reusability experiment of optimized CdS/HPA-2/CN displays that Y (26.5 mg/g lignin) can still reach to 81.0% of initial one after three cycles. Qualitative analysis of depolymerized products reveals that most components are aromatic compounds with the dominant products of vanillin and vanillic acid. Evidence also shows that photocatalysis promotes the reaction and small molecular products increased significantly after depolymerization. In addition, mechanism experiments and electron spin resonance tests exhibit that h+, ·O2− and ·OH took part in lignin depolymerization together and the effect sequence was ·O2− > ·OH > h+. In this work, as an electron mediator, HPA-2 provides the inspiration for construction of Z-scheme heterojunction, and CdS/HPA-2/CN exhibits enormous potential in lignin depolymerization by photocatalysis.

Abstract:Lignin, an abundant aromatic biopolymer, has the potential to produce various biofuels and chemicals through biorefinery activities and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. Microwave-assisted efficient degradation of lignin in methanol/formic acid over Ru/C catalyst cooperated with metal chloride was investigated, concerning the effect of type and dosage of metal chloride, dosage of Ru/C, reaction temperature, and reaction time on depolymerized product yield and distribution. Results showed that 91.1 wt% yield of bio-oil including 13.4 wt% monomers was obtained under the optimum condition. Yields of guaiacol-type compounds and 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran were promoted in the presence of ZnCl 2 . Formic acid played two roles: (1) acid-catalyzed cleavage of linkages; (2) acted as an in situ hydrogen donor for hydrodeoxygenation in the presence of Ru/C. A possible mechanism for lignin degradation was proposed. This work will provide a beneficial approach for efficient depolymerization of lignin and controllable product distribution.

Abstract:Photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin to prepare high-value chemicals is a promising way to promote the valuable utilization of lignin. However, the complexity and stubbornness of lignin structure seriously decrease the photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity. Herein, the micellar aqueous media (SDS-8/HCl) consisting of sodium lauryl sulfonate and hydrochloric acid was successfully prepared. Photocatalyst TiO 2 and SDS-8/HCl system can effectively depolymerize the typical β-1 lignin models and ethanol organosolv lignin to value-added chemicals by oxidizing cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. The addition of hydrochloric acid solution (1 mol/L) improves the selectivity of photocatalytic breaking of lignin C α -C β bonds. Chlorine ions are oxidized to chlorine radicals by photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals, dramatically increasing the photocatalytic efficiency. Electron paramagnetic resonance technique and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry were used to demonstrate the presence of chlorine radicals. Under optimal conditions, the conversion of substrate Dpol is 98.4 %, and the obtained products are mainly benzaldehyde and benzoic acid. Isotope labeling experiments show that water is also involved in photocatalytic reactions and the oxygen needed to form the product benzaldehyde comes from water. Single-electron transfer processes are possible photocatalytic mechanisms that differ from the previous reports. Importantly, water and chlorine ions were found to be involved in photocatalytic reactions for the first time and promote the cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. This work provides new ideas for photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds in heterogeneous photocatalytic systems using micellar aqueous media.

Abstract:Breaking down lignin into smaller units is the key to generate high value-added products. Nevertheless, dissolving this complex plant polyphenol in an environment-friendly way is often a challenge. Levulinic acid, which is formed during the hydrothermal processing of lignocellulosic biomass, has been shown to efficiently dissolve lignin. Herein, levulinic acid was evaluated as a medium for the reductive electrochemical depolymerization of the lignin macromolecule. Copper was chosen as the electrocatalyst due to the economic feasibility and low activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction. After depolymerization, high-resolution mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed lignin-derived monomers and dimers. A predominance of aryl ether and phenolic groups was observed. Depolymerized lignin was further evaluated as an anti-corrosion coating, revealing enhancements on the electrochemical stability of the metal. Via a simple depolymerization process of biomass waste in a biomass-based solvent, a straightforward approach to produce high value-added compounds or tailored biobased materials was demonstrated.
