Abstract:Children are physical beings, but the cultural space they occupy and the developmental stage in which they are immersed—what is now commonly called “childhood”—are discursive constructs. In Korea, a particular set of circumstances came together in the early twentieth century to both recognize children and to start dedicating publications and creative writing to them. Along with the discovery of the child and the emergence of children’s literature, the concept of tongsim, the child-heart, also emerged, and it came to dominate the literary landscape in colonial Korea as well as postcolonial South and North Korea. This chapter demonstrates the way in which colonial period fiction and poetry manifested ideas about the tongsim that addressed children’s affinity with nature through the work of Ch’oe Namsŏn, Pang Chŏnghwan, and Yun Kŭgyŏng. It moves on to show how postcolonial South Korean writers Yi Wŏnsu and Yun Sŏkchung translated the tongsim into a child still demonstrating an affinity with nature and having the capacity to see truth, but also a child profoundly political and national. And last, the chapter looks at the way in which two pioneers of children’s literature in North Korea, Paek Sŏk and Ri Wŏnu, picked up the legacy of tongsim and reflected through it the reorientation of North Korea toward the material world and scientific utopia. The story of tongsim, then, is the story of how a malleable concept can illuminate the change and continuity of Korean literature for children over time. Yun Kugyong put his approach into practice in his own compositions for children, many of which are still sung by schoolchildren in South Korea a century later. Along with the discovery of the child and the emergence of children’s literature, the concept of tongsim, the child-heart, also emerged, and it came to dominate the literary landscape in colonial Korea as well as postcolonial South and North Korea. The South Korean tongsim insisted on a special connection between the child, the natural environment, and the anti-communist nation.
