Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 2896-2912, December 2024. Given a graph [math], a Berge copy of [math] is a hypergraph obtained by enlarging the edges arbitrarily. Győri [Combin. Probab. Comput., 15 (2006), pp. 185–191] showed that for [math] or [math], an [math]-uniform [math]-vertex Berge triangle-free hypergraph has at most [math] hyperedges if [math] is large enough, and this bound is sharp. The book graph [math] consists of [math] triangles sharing an edge. Very recently, Ghosh et al. [Discrete Math., 347 (2024), 113828] showed that a 3-uniform [math]-vertex Berge [math]-free hypergraph has at most [math] hyperedges if [math] is large enough. They conjectured that this bound can be improved to [math]. We prove this conjecture for [math] and disprove it for [math] by proving the sharp bound [math]. We also consider larger uniformity and determine the largest number of Berge [math]-free [math]-uniform hypergraphs besides an additive term [math]. We obtain a similar bound if the Berge [math]-fan ([math] triangles sharing a vertex) is forbidden.
