Abstract:Globalization has given a powerful impetus to the development of international commercial activity and logistics management systems taking full advantage of cross-border networking. The solution lies at the intersection of information technologies, technical means of machine-to-machine (M2M) interaction, mobile high-speed networks, geolocation, cloud services, and a number of international standards. The current trend towards creating digital logistics platforms has set a number of serious challenges for developers. The most important requirement is the condition of sustainability of the obtained solutions with respect to disturbances in the conditions of logistics activities caused not only by market uncertainty but also by a whole set of unfavorable factors accompanying the transportation process. Within the framework of the presented research, the problem of obtaining the conditions for the stability of solutions obtained on the basis of mathematical models is set. At the same time, the processes of transferring not only discrete but also continuous material flows through complex structured networks are taken into account. This study contains the results of the analysis of the stability of solutions of differential systems of various types that simulate the transfer processes in network media. Initial boundary value problems for evolutionary equations and differential-difference systems are relevant in logistics, both for the discrete transportation of a wide range of goods and for the quasi-continuous transportation of, for example, liquid hydrocarbons. The criterion for the work of a logistics operator is the integral functional. For the mathematical description of the transport process of continuous and discrete media, a wide class of integrable functions are used, which adequately describe the transport of media with a complex internal rheological structure.

Abstract:Organizations are stimulated and informed by the consultants, competitors, and policymakers to develop their logistics strategies through the nexus of sustainability principles and digital intervention solutions. As the scholarly and managerial interests in sustainability and digital logistics technologies increase, there is an urgent requirement to expand the conceptual and implementation perspective. Sustainable logistics 4.0, yet in the nascent stage, is attracting the favourable attention of practitioners as it provides an opportunity to improve sustainability aspects of the business through digital intervention. In this study, fifteen enabling factors for implementing sustainable logistics 4.0 are identified and critically evaluated for varied firms on different digitalization stages. These factors are identified, prioritized, and modelled using critical literature review, experts' opinions, Fuzzy-Analytical Hierarchy Process (F-AHP), and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL). The results show that “technology infrastructure, and digital solutions,” “top management commitment,” and “governmental norms” are found to be the top contributing factors influencing sustainable logistics 4.0 implementation. The research findings aid policymakers in conceptualizing and ascertaining the implementation and operationalization roadmap for sustainable logistics 4.0. Particularly, the study provides guidelines for logistics professionals to enhance performance while advancing digital interventions in a sustainable supply chain.

Abstract:Digital technologies are a key element in the logistics sector development. The so-called digital revolution that began in the 1980s, on the basis of the increasingly widespread use of automation, artificial intelligence and robotics in production processes, is changing the face of world logistics, a change often referred to as Logistics 4.0. Building on the impact of digitalisation on other sectors, port cities are also expected to see the emergence of new business models in the coming years, made possible by the advancement of digital technologies. Some researchers and practitioners even foresee the development of a global cargo handling system similar to the Internet, called Physical Internet (PI), in which goods would be moved seamlessly on an intermodal network at very low costs thanks to state-of-the-art data management technologies. The development of a PI-based logistics model requires new methods of monitoring and managing data, on the physical characteristics of the goods, as well as on the financial flows and traceability of the products; and ports are likely to play a critical role in favouring the uptake of such data collections and use. One of the most promising enablers to this vision is blockchain, a technology that would make it possible to document an increasingly large number of characteristics of a product or a commodity. The shipping sector cannot be caught unprepared, and adequate support is also needed inside ports. This chapter reviews the current technology and digitalisation trends in ports, advancing hypotheses on how they are likely to change port-city cargo—but also people—mobility and influence port logistics.

Abstract:The article critically analysed the advancements in logistics and their profound influence on the expansion of transportation infrastructure in Europe. Its core objective was to evaluate the extent to which contemporary technological advancements and digital solutions contribute to the enhancement of efficiency, safety, and sustainability within transportation systems. The work focused on analysing the key innovations such as automated transport management, the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the use of big data to determine how they contribute to infrastructure development and what challenges they pose. To achieve the article’s goal, the research was based on an integrated approach that included the analysis of secondary data such as academic articles, reports from government and industry organisations, and case studies. A quantitative analysis was also used in order to assess the impact of innovations on key performance indicators of transport infrastructure. The main methods were the comparative analysis, modeling and scenario analysis, which allowed assessing potential future trends and risks. The investigation was conducted by analyzing analytical reports from logistics companies, synthesising strategies for the development of transport infrastructure, and utilising contemporary scientific methodologies to establish logistics prowess. The use of scientific research methods in the article was determined in the context of the disclosure of key practices, trends and means of the functioning quality of the logistics networks improvement, chains supply and transport infrastructure, as a key source of economic development. The article analysed the theoretical concepts of innovations in logistics and the possibilities of their application in the modern business environment. Attention was paid to issues of applied strategic solutions based on the practice of developed countries, regarding the introduction of innovations in the provision of transport infrastructure and the possibility of its strengthening due to the automation of decisions and effective management. The paper presents the significant outcomes achieved through innovations in logistics and the implementation of logistics projects in Poland and other European countries. These nations have demonstrated active involvement in the development of exceptionally efficient logistics systems.

Abstract:The aim of the research is to summarize current trends in the use of digital technologies in logistics and supply chain management, to study the nature of their impact on the development of the logistics system of an economic entity. The article summarizes the main trends in the digitalization of supply chains and logistics in trade and industry. The methodical aspects of digital transformation of supply chains were considered. It is established that the emphasis in the organization and management of supply chains has shifted towards the transformation of traditional chains into the space of the digital economy. The article identifies promising areas and challenges for the use of digital technologies in logistics and supply chain management: the Internet of Things, blockchain, cloud services, augmented reality, robots, drones, and 3D printing. The trends in the development of digital technologies are explored, as their integration into global supply chains can accelerate, simplify and reduce the cost of the supply process at almost all stages. Digital technologies that improve the process of goods movement in supply chains are presented in the article in terms of logistics in the context of managing the relevant flows: material, information, financial, service. The state of development of cooperation between the main types of economic activities that produce technological and digital technologies and types of economic activities that provide logistics and supply management in the European Union was assessed.

Abstract:Today’s world economies are connected through intercontinental supply chains, consisting of a combination of land and sea transport and using terminals and warehouses as nodal points. Containerization has lowered transportation and handling costs substantially and has allowed international trade to reach today’s high levels. In search of lower costs, companies have looked for increasing economies of scale in larger ships and in terminal automation, driven by advances in information technology. Yet these developments have led to new problems due to the complexity of automated systems. Bottlenecks have shifted from sea to land transport, while environmental pressures encouraged the development of intermodal transport and slow steaming.

Abstract:The study investigates how the adoption of emerging digital technologies can provide valuable business opportunities for logistics centres in maritime supply chains. For this purpose, a systematic literature review (SLR) of prior academic studies addressing this topic is performed. The review unveils the current lack of a comprehensive framework to assess the impact of digital technologies on transport and maritime logistics, bringing insights for a promising research agenda. The paper proposes an ad-hoc conceptual framework for disentangling relevant business opportunities which originates from the adoption of cutting-edge digital technologies for each type of logistics centres. The main business benefits for logistics infrastructures which manage cargo flows in maritime supply chains (MSCs) are identified and discussed. The results suggest alternative strategic options for innovating logistics chains and increase the competitiveness of various cargo logistics centres. Managerial and marketing implications for both academics and practitioners are discussed in-depth.

Abstract:Globalisation, elimination of trade barriers, lower tariffs, and industrial revolutions along with technological advancement, have changed the way for freight transportation. Trade-related international freight is expected to grow by a factor of 4.3 by 2050 (compared with 2010) with patterns also shifting: one-third of trade in 2050 will occur among developing economies. While opportunities abound with a growing population, increased consumption rates, new e-commerce players in the market, just-in-delivery supply chains, and reverse logistics, there is an untapped potential in the freight transport sector. The US Department of Transportation (US DOT) has reported transportation as the second largest source of carbon emissions. In the context of EU, the freight transport sector is causing environmental damage due to inefficiency (40–60% empty haulage), redundant trips, lack of synchronisation between transport modes and lack of ability to deal with disruption and risks. On the other hand, developing countries such as India or China face severe challenges of congested roads, disruption due to unexpected events, low utilisation of fleet capacity, poor infrastructure, congested and inefficient ports, inability to meet new demand due to prefixed routes and high noise and air pollution. There is a growing need than ever before for logistics and freight transport sector to incorporate sustainability measures into their operations, as the current processes have a negative impact on the environment and quality of life. In this framework, the development and availability of analytical models and decision support tools can help organisations make more effective and informed decisions.

Abstract:The article analyzes the current trends of the international transport and logistics business in the system of international economic security. The development of the integration of the world economy and the globalization of business contribute to the creation of international logistics systems and global supply chains. The article highlights the main directions of increasing the efficiency of supply chain management and indicates the sources of increasing the efficiency of this process. The key negative aspects that prevent the effective functioning of international transport and logistics systems have been identified. A comparison is made between the traditional approach to production and the logistic approach, when the manufacturer starts production only when a specific order is received. The inventory management system of the seller is characterized. An overview of modern trends in the international transport and logistics business was carried out, in particular: increasing turnover while shortening delivery times, increasing investments in logistics startups by venture funds, customization, the use of multimodal transport and logistics centers, ecological logistics, etc. The main directions in which digital logistics centers can help logistics companies to achieve success are determined, in particular, it was determined that success will be achieved through the use of the method of «postponement» or «delayed product differentiation», the organization of e-commerce logistics, containerization, increasing the share of direct express deliveries from the producer to the consumer, bypassing intermediaries and intermediate warehouses, electronic exchange of data and various information, the growth of the agricultural machinery market, the use of multimodal transport and logistics centers, as well as clear planning of supply chains, flexibility, management of stocks and volumes. Also, a hypothesis was put forward about the emergence of a new term «logtech company», which includes not only the creation of new technologies, but also new logistics business models based on the joint use (shared use) of transportation.

Abstract:Industry 4.0, referred to as the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”, also known as “smart manufacturing”, “industrial internet” or “integrated industry”, is currently a much-discussed topic that supposedly has the potential to affect entire industries by transforming the way goods are designed, manufactured, delivered and payed. This paper seeks to discuss the opportunities of Industry 4.0 in the context of logistics management, since implications are expected in this field. The authors pursue the goal of shedding light on the young and mostly undiscovered topic of Industry 4.0 in the context of logistics management, thus following a conceptual research approach. At first, a logistics-oriented Industry 4.0 application model as well as the core components of Industry 4.0 are presented. Different logistics scenarios illustrate potential implications in a practice-oriented manner and are discussed with industrial experts. The studies reveal opportunities in terms of decentralisation, self-regulation and efficiency. Moreover, it becomes apparent that the concept of Industry 4.0 still lacks a clear understanding and is not fully established in practice yet. The investigations demonstrate potential Industry 4.0 implications in the context of Just-in-Time/Just-in-Sequence and cross-company Kanban systems in a precise manner. Practitioners could use the described scenarios as a reference to foster their own Industry 4.0 initiatives, with respect to logistics management.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of sustainability efforts within the field of supply chain management, more specifically supply chain logistics operations, and to identify opportunities and provide recommendations for firms to follow sustainable operations. This study also aims to stimulate further research within the area of sustainable logistics operations. The reasons why it is important to implement sustainability into supply chain operations is discussed. Based on a review of the extant literature, various areas within the logistics function where sustainability can be implemented are then presented. Some short‐term and long‐term recommendations for the successful implementation of sustainability in the logistics function of supply chains are provided. There has been very little work done to understand the role and importance of logistics in an organization's quest towards sustainability. For firms to implement a sustainability strategy in their supply chain operations, the logistics function needs to play a prominent role because of the magnitude of costs involved and the opportunity to identify and eliminate inefficiencies and reduce the carbon footprint. Firms in their quest for sustainable logistics operations must start early and start simple. A top management commitment is required for such efforts to be successful. Also, firms need to be able to visualize and map out their supply chains and benchmark their sustainability efforts with other firms in their industry. Firms need to follow sustainable practices in their overall operations and in their logistics operations in particular because not only does it have financial and other intangible benefits, but it is also the right thing to do. Firms have a great social responsibility especially with respect to use of non‐renewable sources of energy and materials and also with respect to how their products are used and handled once they reach the end of their life cycles. This paper is the first of its kind which examines the state of sustainability within the field of supply chain logistics operations and identifies areas and sets the agenda for future research in this field.

The purpose of the paper is to determinate the features of management of international logistics support of the enterprise. Results. In the modern globalized business environment, where companies operate in international markets, the management of international logistics becomes a determining factor for achieving a competitive advantage. International logistics activities are carried out in a very dynamic environment, so the state of the logistics system must be constantly monitored, analyzed and evaluated. The goal of improving the company's international logistics support is to increase the efficiency of logistics processes and improve the company's image on the market. International logistics support of the company's activities includes a set of measures and strategies aimed at organizing and optimizing the supply chain, warehouse and transport operations, inventory and infrastructure management, which allows to ensure the necessary quality of customer service and reduce costs. This paper is intended to reveal the key aspects of the management of international logistics support of the enterprise, including the setting of tasks, stages of implementation and participants of these complex logistics processes. Conclusion. International logistics differs from domestic logistics management due to unique challenges, such as choosing optimal international routes, customs procedures, managing currency risks and dealing with different cultural, linguistic and geographical factors. The specificity of international logistics arises as a result of the peculiarities of freight transportation, crossing borders, customs procedures and the diversity of transport systems. The main tasks of managing international logistics support, which are defined in the paper, include improving quality, eliminating dependence on one supplier, controlling international standards, protecting the stability of supplies, identifying risks and accounting for logistics costs.

Abstract:Digital transformation has a significant impact on the development of such an important sector of the economy as logistics. All major economic trends are traced in logistics, and basic digital technologies are already being used. At the same time, there are certain obstacles to the effective development of digital logistics. For example, there is a lack of informational integration of supply chains. This article systematizes information about the state of digital transformation in logistics, about the main trends, applied technologies, analyzes it, simulates the digital logistics ecosystem, identifies stakeholders, drivers of digital logistics transformation, requirements for the development of the industry. Based on this, the main lines of action to improve the efficiency of logistics activities in the context of digital transformation are formulated.
