Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have drawn tremendous interest owing to maximized atom utilization, well-defined structures, and unique catalytic performance. The metal atom does not drive catalytic reactions alone, but jointly with the coordinated atoms. This review focuses on the local chemical environment effects of SACs in catalytic reactions and summarizes the recent advances in tailoring the coordination environment to improve catalytic performance. Finally, challenges and opportunities in the development of SACs with well-controlled uniform coordination structures for advanced catalysis are discussed.

Abstract:Single atom catalysts have emerged as a new frontier due to almost 100% atom utilization efficiency along with outstanding catalytic performance. This review highlights the recent advancements in tailoring local structure and metal‐support interaction of single atom catalysts to gain a deeper insight into the structure‐performance relationship. The challenges and opportunities in this field are further discussed.Single atom catalysts (SACs) that integrate the merits of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been attracting considerable attention in recent years. The individual metal atoms of SACs can be stabilized on supports through various unsaturated chemical sites or space confinement for achieving the maximized atom utilization efficiency. Aside from the development of strategies for preparing high loading and high purity SACs, another key challenge in this field is precisely manipulating the geometric and electronic structure of catalytically active single metal sites, thus rendering the catalysts exceptionally reactive, selective, and stabile compared to their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advancements in SACs for heterogeneous catalysis from the perspective of local structural regulation and the synergistic coupling effect between metal species and supports. Special emphasis is placed on the elucidation of the catalytic structure‐performance relationship in terms of coordination environment, valence state and metal‐support interactions by advanced characterization and theoretical studies. Select in situ or operando characterization techniques for tracking the SACs' structure evolution under realistic conditions are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities are discussed to offer insight into the rational design of more intriguing SACs with high activity and distinct chemoselectivity.

Abstract:The local coordination environment of catalysts has been investigated for an extended period to obtain enhanced catalytic performance. Especially with the advancement of single-atom catalysts (SACs), research on the coordination environment has been advanced to the atomic level. The surrounding coordination atoms of central metal atoms play important roles in their catalytic activity, selectivity and stability. In recent years, remarkable improvements of the catalytic performance of SACs have been achieved by the tailoring of coordination atoms, coordination numbers and second- or higher-coordination shells, which provided new opportunities for the further development of SACs. In this review, the characterization of coordination environment, tailoring of the local coordination environment, and their related adjustable catalytic performance will be discussed. We hope this review will provide new insights on further research of SACs.

Abstract:Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have been rising recently as a new frontier in the catalysis field. Due to maximum atom utilization efficiency and tunable electronic structures, SACs exhibit highly distinctive catalytic performance from bulk counterparts. SACs with high metal loading will facilitate practical applications. To that end, this review focuses on recent strategies to maximize metal loading. An appropriate substrate, mainly heteroatom‐doped carbon materials, is the key to avoiding aggregation or sintering during synthetic procedures. The coordination site construction and spatial confinement strategies are adopted to prepare SACs with high metal loading. Advanced characterization techniques with atomic resolution are indispensable for identification of the exact structure of SACs. This is true, especially for the applications and challenges in developing in situ/operando characterization techniques at the atomic level, which are discussed in this review. Moreover, it is fundamentally necessary to investigate the active center structure, which facilitates any design of efficient SACs that can maximize single‐atom catalytic activity. Furthermore, this review highlights challenges and prospects for development of SACs.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the metal active sites are isolated on the support and stabilized by coordinated atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc., represent the maximum usage efficiency of the metal atoms. Benefiting from the recent progress in synthetic strategies, characterization methods, and computational models, many SACs that deliver an impressive catalytic performance for a variety of reactions have been developed. The catalytic selectivity and activity are critical issues that need to be optimized and augmented in the areas of nanotechnology and biomedicine. This review summarizes some recent experimental and theoretical progress aimed at clarifying the structure of SACs and how they influence the catalytic performance. The examples described here elaborate on the utility of SACs and highlight the strengths of these catalysts in the applications of biomedicine, environmental protection, and energy conversion. Finally, some current challenges and future perspectives for SACs are also discussed.Some recent experimental and theoretical progress is summarized, aimed at clarifying the structure of single-atom catalysts and how they influence the catalytic performance.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal catalysts have triggered great interest in the field of catalysis owing to their unique features. The isolated single or few metal atoms can be anchored on substrates via chemical bonding or space confinement to maximize atom utilization efficiency. The key challenge lies in precisely regulating the geometric and electronic structure of active metal centers, thus significantly influencing the catalytic properties. Although several review papers were published on the preparation, characterization, and application of single‐atom catalysts (SACs), the comprehensive understanding of SACs, dual‐atom catalysts (DACs), and atomic clusters has never been systematically summarized. In this review, recent advances in the engineering of local environments of state‐of‐the‐art SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters for enhanced catalytic performance are highlighted. Firstly, various synthesis approaches for SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters are presented, focusing on how to stabilize single or few atoms on appropriate supports. Then, special attention is focused on the elucidation of local environments in terms of electronic state and coordination structure. Furthermore, a comprehensive summary of isolated single and few atoms for the applications of thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis is provided and discussed, with an emphasis on structure‐performance relationships. Finally, the potential challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field are offered for guiding the design of isolated metal catalysts for enhanced catalysis. Abstract:As a new, emerging class in catalysis field, single-atomic-site catalysts (SASCs) have displayed outstanding activities, selectivities, and stabilities in a range of important catalytic reactions. The compositions and structures of SASCs have a great impact on catalytic performances; therefore, the central task is to rationally manipulate the structures with atomic-level precision, and thereupon to design different active sites to promote the overall performances. Here, we compare SASCs with clusters/nanoparticles in term of their catalytic behaviors, and systematically interpret the impacts of the microscopic structures of SASCs on catalytic performances. Subsequently, we summarize the reports on synergistic catalysis over diatomic, multiatomic sites, single-atom alloys, and atomic interfaces, and highlight the great significance of in situ characterization technologies for monitoring the active sites. Finally, we discuss the limitations, development trends, and future challenges of SASCs, and present an outlook on further constructing more sophisticated active sites for more complex catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Single/dual‐metal atoms supported on carbon matrix can be modulated by coordination structure and neighboring active sites. Precisely designing the geometric and electronic structure and uncovering the structure‐property relationships of single/dual‐metal atoms confront with grand challenges. Herein, this review summarizes the latest progress in microenvironment engineering of single/dual‐atom active sites via a comprehensive comparison of single‐atom catalyst (SACs) and dual‐atom catalysts (DACs) in term of design principles, modulation strategy, and theoretical understanding of structure‐performance correlations. Subsequently, recent advances in several typical electrocatalysis process are discussed to get general understanding of the reaction mechanisms on finely‐tuned SACs and DACs. Finally, full‐scaled summaries of the challenges and prospects are given for microenvironment engineering of SACs and DACs. Abstract:To date, the scope of single-atom catalysts (SAC) in liquid-phase transformations is rather limited owing to stability issues and the inability to activate complex substances. This calls for a better design of the catalyst support that can provide a dynamic coordination environment needed for catalytic action, and yet retain robustness against leaching or aggregation. In addition, the chemical orthogonality of SAC is useful for designing tandem or multicomponent reactions, in which side reactions common to metal nanoparticles are suppressed. In this review, the intrinsic mechanism will be highlighted that controls reaction efficiency and selectivity in SAC-catalyzed pathways, as well as the structural dynamism of SAC under complex liquid-phase conditions. These mechanistic insights are helpful for the development of next-generation SAC systems for the synthesis of high-value pharmaceuticals through late-stage functionalization, sequential and multicomponent strategies.

Abstract:Active components with suitable supports are the common paradigm for industrial catalysis, and the catalytic activity usually increases with minimizing the active component size, generating a new frontier in catalysis, single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, further improvement of SACs activity is limited by the relatively low loading of single atoms (SAs, which are heteroatoms for most SACs, i.e., external active sites) because of the highly favorable aggregation of single heteroatoms during preparation. Research interest should be shifted to investigate SACs with intrinsic SAs, which could circumvent the aggregation of external SAs and consequently increase the SAs loading while maintaining them individual to further improve the activity. In this review, SACs with external or intrinsic SAs are discussed and, at last, the perspectives and challenges for obtaining high-loading SACs with intrinsic SAs are outlined.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) include a promising family of electrocatalysts with unique geometric structures. Beyond conventional ones with fully isolated metal sites, an emerging class of catalysts with the adjacent metal single atoms exhibiting intersite metal-metal interactions appear in recent years and can be denoted as correlated SACs (C-SACs). This type of catalysts provides more opportunities to achieve substantial structural modification and performance enhancement toward a wider range of electrocatalytic applications. On the basis of a clear identification of metal-metal interactions, this review critically examines the recent research progress in C-SACs. It shows that the control of metal-metal interactions enables regulation of atomic structure, local coordination, and electronic properties of metal single atoms, which facilitate the modulation of electrocatalytic behavior of C-SACs. Last, we outline directions for future work in the design and development of C-SACs, which is indispensable for creating high-performing new SAC architectures.

Single-atom Catalysis Enabled by High-Energy Metastable Structures.

Abstract:Owing to limited degrees of freedom, the active sites of stable single-atom catalyst (SAC) often have one structure that is energetically much lower than other local-minimum structures. Thus, the SAC adopts one lowest-energy structure (LES) with an overwhelmingly larger proportion than any other high-energy metastable structure (HEMS), and the LES is commonly assumed to be solely responsible for the catalytic performance of an SAC. Herein, we demonstrate with SACs anchored on CeO2 that the HEMS of an SAC, even though its proportion remains several orders of magnitude lower than the LES throughout the catalytic reaction, can dictate catalysis with extraordinary activity arising from its unique coordination environment and oxidation state. Thus, we unravel the key role of HEMS-enabled catalysis in single-atom catalysis, which shakes the common assumption in the studies of SACs and urges new developments in both experiment and theory to identify and exploit catalysis via HEMSs.

Abstract:Due to their outstanding catalytic properties of high stability, high selectivity, and high activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted the attention of research teams worldwide. The synthesis and application breakthroughs of single atom in environmental catalysis have been systematically reviewed in this study. With nearly 100 % atomic utilization and easy separation, single-atom catalysts take into account the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The results show that the common preparation methods of monatomic catalysts include arc discharge, strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA), flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Common single-atom catalyst supports include graphene, zeolites, and oxides. Common anchoring sites for single-atom catalysts include surface atomic sites, doped heteroatom sites, hole sites, defect sites, metal sites, and curvature sites. In addition, this study also reviewed the application of single-atom catalysts in the field of environmental catalysis, focusing on the breakthroughs of single-atom catalysis in solving volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission control, activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade pollutants, and green energy conversion (GNC). The results show that coordination number and orbital interactions play an important role in the catalytic mechanism of single-atom catalysts. This review indicates that single-atom catalysts have broad application prospects in areas such as air pollution, water pollution, and energy conversion. In addition, the cost, lifespan, loading rate, and secondary pollution of single-atom catalysts will still be issues that require special attention in the future.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Single-atom catalysts (SACs), with atomically dispersed metal atoms anchored on a typical support, representing the utmost utilization efficiency of the atoms, have recently emerged as promising catalysts for a variety of catalytic applications. The electronic properties of the active center of SACs are highly dependent on the local environment constituted by the single metal atom and its surrounding coordination elements. Therefore, engineering the coordination environment near single metal sites, from the first coordination shell to the second shell or higher, would be a rational way to design efficient SACs with optimized electronic structure for catalytic applications. The wide range of coordination configurations, guaranteed by the multiple choices of the type and heterogeneity of the coordination element (N, O, P, S, etc.), further offer a large opportunity to rationally design SACs for satisfactory activities and investigate the structure–performance relationship. In this review, the coordination engineering of SACs by varying the type of coordination element was elaborated and the photocatalytic water splitting of SACs was highlighted. Finally, challenging issues related to the coordination engineering of SACs and their photocatalytic applications were discussed to call for more efforts devoted to the further development of single-atom catalysis.</p>

Abstract:With the merits of high atom utilization,low cost,unique and tunable microstructures,as well as the particular catalytic behaviors,single-atom catalysts(SACs)have gained worldwide interest and achieved great advancements in heterogeneous catalysis recently.However,catalyzing an intricate multistep reaction is usually challenging for one single-atom center,in which case multiple catalytic sites are needed.In this review,the experimental and computational advances in the construction strategies of multi-active-site SACs will be summarized and classified as single-atom/single-atom,single-atom/nanoparticle and single-atom/support multifunctional catalysts.The microstructures of different active centers and their catalytic behaviors during catalysis will be emphatically highlighted.Moreover,the confronting challenges and opportunities of this field will be discussed.This review will place emphasis on the design of multifunctional SACs for multistep reactions,which will shed light on their further development in heterogeneous catalysis and beyond.

Abstract:In recent years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received extensive attention due to their unique structure and excellent performance. Currently, a variety of porous materials are used as confined single-atom catalysts, such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), or carbon nitride (CN). The support plays a key role in determining the coordination structure of the catalytic metal center and its catalytic performance. For example, the strong interaction between the metal and the carrier induces the charge transfer between the metal and the carrier, and ultimately affects the catalytic behavior of the single-atom catalyst. Porous materials have unique chemical and physical properties including high specific surface area, adjustable acidity and shape selectivity (such as zeolites), and are rational support materials for confined single atoms, which arouse research interest in this field. This review surveys the latest research progress of confined single-atom catalysts for porous materials, which mainly include zeolites, CN and MOFs. The preparation methods, characterizations, application fields, and the interaction between metal atoms and porous support materials of porous material confined single-atom catalysts are discussed. And we prospect for the application prospects and challenges of porous material confined single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:In recent years, single-atom site catalysts (SACs) have achieved great advancements in heterogeneous and electrochemical catalysis due to the merits of maximal atom utilization, unique electronic and geometric structures, low costs, and high catalytic performances. The electronic structures of the isolated metal centers can greatly influence the adsorption energies of reactants and intermediates, thus determining the catalytic activities of SACs. Especially, the electronic structure regulation of the metal sites has been advanced to the atomic level and proven a powerful strategy to enhance their electrocatalytic performances, which provides great opportunities for the further development of SACs. Based on the reported synthesis and structural modulation methods, in this review, the experimental and computational advances in the electronic structure regulation strategies for SACs, including coordination adjustment, electronic metal-support interaction, oxidation state modulation, and strain engineering, will be summarized. Then, the effects of electronic structures on the adsorption behaviors and, thus, the electrocatalytic activities of water splitting and O-2/CO2 reduction reactions will be emphatically exemplified and discussed. In the end, a brief conclusion of this paper and the existing challenges and future opportunities in this research direction will be proposed. This review aims to highlight the understanding of electronic structure in association to the electrocatalytic activity for SACs and provide guidance for their further development in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:<p>Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have recently emerged as an exciting system in heterogeneous catalysis showing outstanding performance in many catalytic reactions. Single‐atom catalytic sites alone are not stable and thus require stabilization from substrates. Crystalline porous materials such as zeolites and metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent substrates for SACs, offering high stability with the potential to further enhance their performance due to synergistic effects. This review features recent work on the structure, electronic, and catalytic properties of zeolite and MOF‐protected SACs, offering atomic‐scale views from the "inside" thanks to the subatomic resolution of synchrotron X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The extended X‐ray absorption fine structure and associated methods will be shown to be powerful tools in identifying the single‐atom site and can provide details into the coordination environment and bonding disorder of SACs. The X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure will be demonstrated as a valuable method in probing the electronic properties of SACs by analyzing the white line intensity, absorption edge shift, and pre‐/postedge features. Emphasis is also placed on in situ/operando XAS using state‐of‐the‐art equipment, which can unveil the changes in structure and properties of SACs during the dynamic catalytic processes in a highly sensitive and time‐resolved manner.</p>
