Abstract:Heavy-metal pollution has attracted intensive attention from the public because of the severe threats of heavy metals to the ecosystem and human health. Ultralow concentration of heavy metals in aquatic environment leads to the urgent needs of sensitive approaches for heavy-metal detection. Electrochemical DNA biosensors present outstanding superiority in convenience, selectivity, and sensitivity compared with conventional methods. To achieve the ultralow detection limit, efforts have been made to implement signal enhancement strategies to develop electrochemical DNA biosensors with enhanced sensing performance. This review focuses on the recent progress in signal enhancement strategies applied to electrochemical DNA biosensors for heavy-metal-ion detection including nicking enzyme-assisted amplification, the utilization of core-shell nanoparticles, and nanocomposites modification.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.

Abstract:High-sensitivity and rapid detection of heavy metal elements in water is in great demand. Traditional laboratory analysis methods limited to long cycles, complex processing, and risk of secondary pollution, which made it impossible to achieve on-site detection. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has the characteristics of rapid and minimal damage and has been applied to the detection of solids, liquids and even gases. However, it is difficult to directly detect with LIBS due to the low content of heavy metals in water and the matrix effect of samples. We propose a rapid detection method of heavy metal elements in water by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy combined with sample morphology constrained positioning. Using Pb as a representative element, analyze the enhancement effect and mechanism of the above sample processing method on the LIBS signal, and establish a calibration curve with a concentration range of 100-1000 ug/L. The correlation coefficient R2 is 0.97, and the detection limit reaches 86.6 ug/L., which meets the requirements of surface water quality testing. The study combined with portable LIBS equipment can provide a low-cost and rapid screening method for heavy metal pollution in surface water.

Abstract:This paper introduced electrostatic-assisted laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to enhance spectral intensity and improve quantitative accuracy of trace metal elements (Cu, Al, Zn, Ca and Na) in aqueous solutions. Firstly, the effect of the voltage and pole-plate distance of electrostatic field on the spectral intensity was investigated. The spectral intensity of metal elements was enhanced by changing DC voltage and plate distance. Secondly, the effect of electrostatic-assisted LIBS on the quantitative analysis was investigated, and the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were calculated with and without electrostatic-assisted LIBS. The use of electrostatic-assisted LIBS reduced the LOD and LOQ of metal elements by an order of magnitude, respectively. Finally, several regression analysis models including least squares regression analysis (PLSR), support vector machine regression analysis (SVR), backpropagation neural network regression analysis (BP-ANN), whale optimization algorithm-SVR (WOA-SVR), and whale optimization algorithm-BP (WOA-BP) were established to predict the concentration regression based on the collected spectral information. Compared to the traditional regression methods, the improved machine-learning algorithms based on intelligent optimization algorithms achieved the highest regression prediction accuracy of 99.81%. These findings confirm the capability and accuracy of electrostatic-assisted LIBS combined with machine-learning algorithms for detecting trace metal elements in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is more and more serious in agriculture products.In the experiment,the rice polluted by cadmium is used as an example.We adopt coaxial dual pulse laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and the experimental parameters are optimized.The application of dual pulse-laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) in the area of monitoring the quality and safety of the farm products are explored.The feasibility of improving the sensitivity and accuracy for detecting the heavy metal in agricultural products is disscussed.The intensity of LIBS spectra and the real concentration of Cd of the nine concentration gradients samples are obtained by LIBS and anodic stripping voltammetry.By using univariate linear scaling regression model,three characteristic spectrum of Cd is analyzed quantitatively.The results indicate that the lowest mass fraction of Cd is detected by DP-LIBS with 5.03 μg/g and all the spectra lines have good correlation coefficients.The experiment shows that DP-LIBS can improve the detecting sensitivity and accuracy of Cd,its concentration information of Cd is got according to the linear regression model.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate a unique method for the detection of heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) at trace levels in aqueous solutions via laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) enriched using chelating resin. Reduction in sample time preparation was shortened by tailoring the sample processing time with the aid of an enrichment method. The calibration curves and LODs of CH-90 chelating resin for enriching Cr, Cu, Pb, and Ni cations were established under the optimal conditions. The linear correlation coefficients were all above 0.98, and the detection limits were 0.148 mg/L, 0.150 mg/L, 0.149 mg/L, and 0.240 mg/L, corresponding to Cr, Cu, Pb, and Ni, respectively. The quantitative evaluation of the obtained results signifies that the proposed method is highly sensitive for detecting trace elements and offers a good correspondence of the acquired linear correlation with its calibration model. Results comparison with past studies suggests that the proposed method is able to achieve lower LODs for elements under investigation.

Abstract:This research explores the use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy to detect elements in water residue. This research focuses on inducing plasma on pelletized water residue samples via a pulsed Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) nanosecond laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm and energy of 100 mJ. The LIBS measurements were performed without and with a magnetic field of 0.8 T. Magnetic discs were used to create a magnetic field of 0.8 T. The presence of different elements (Ca, Mg, Fe, Cr, Mn, As, C, Li, Sr, Ba, Ti, K, O, N, and Si) was confirmed by examining the plasma emission spectra obtained from LIBS analysis. The results show that LIBS successfully detected toxic and heavy metals in water residues. Notably, the presence of a magnetic field affects the plasma properties such that the electron temperature and electron number density increase with increasing magnetic field. The Joule heating effect and the magnetic confinement effect are responsible for the increase in the plasma properties. The improved spectroscopic outcomes are associated with the magnetic confinement of water residue plasma, supported by the affirmation of thermal beta β t , which is less than one for all samples.

Abstract:Detection of heavy metals in environmental water is important in addressing water pollution. In this study, a simple and effective strategy was proposed that utilized femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LIBS) to investigate the effect of titration number in dry droplet pretreatment on a Al substrate for detecting trace elements in aqueous solutions. This method aimed to enhance signals for high-sensitive detection of trace metal elements in liquid samples. Cr, Pb, and Cu were detected in water solutions with 1, 2, and 4 titration numbers. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be twice as high with 1 titration as with 2 titrations and four times higher than with 4 titrations. The LODs for Cr, Pb, and Cu obtained by 4 titration numbers were 0.19, 1.40, and 0.36 ng/mL, respectively. The calculated R2 for Cr, Cu was > 0.99 and for Pb > 0.98, which was satisfactory results and demonstrated the feasibility of using increased titration times in dry droplet pretreatment for analyzing liquid samples. Applying increased titration numbers in high-performance signal enhancement undoubtedly elevates the sensitivity of fs-LIBS analysis methods to a new level.

Abstract:The determination of heavy metals in drinking water is of great importance, but it is hard to realize rapid and in-situ measurement. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is an effective method for both solid and liquid sample analysis with advantages of fast and micro-destructive. However, the concentrations of heavy metals in drinking water is too low to be directly detected using LIBS. In this study, we enhanced the sensitivity of LIBS by coupling with chelating resin, which is usually used for water purification. The resin provided a rapid enrichment of the heavy metal, so the limits of detection of common LIBS system was much enhanced. Using Cadmium as the representative heavy metal, PLSR model for predicting Cd were built based on the spectral intensity (Cd 214.4 nm) with concentrations from 0 to 100 µg/L, and resulted in correlation coefficient of 0.94433 and RMSE of 7.1517 µg/L. The LoD was 3.6 µg/L. Furthermore, the volume, resin mass, adsorption time, and LIBS system parameters were optimized for practical applications. We also demonstrated that the resin can be recycled without loss in sensing ability. The combination of chelating resin with LIBS provides inexpensive, rapid, and sensitive detection method of trace heavy metal contaminants in drinking water.

Abstract:Excessive emissions of heavy metals not only cause environmental pollution but also pose a direct threat to human health. Therefore, rapid and accurate detection of heavy metals in the environment is of great significance. Herein, we propose a method based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with filter paper modified with bovine serum albumin-protected gold nanoclusters (LIBS-FP-AuNCs) for the rapid and sensitive detection of Cr3+ and Mn2+. The filter paper modified with AuNCs was used to selectively enrich Cr3+ and Mn2+. Combined with the multi-element detection capability of LIBS, this method achieved the simultaneous rapid detection of Cr3+ and Mn2+. Both elements showed linear ranges for concentrations of 10–1000 μg L−1, with limits of detection of 7.5 and 9.0 μg L−1 for Cr3+ and Mn2+, respectively. This method was successfully applied to the determination of Cr3+ and Mn2+ in real water samples, with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 94.6% to 105.1%. This method has potential application in the analysis of heavy metal pollution.

Abstract:Pollution from heavy metals in agricultural products is becoming more and more serious. It is very necessary to develop a novel technology for rapid detection. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy ( LIBS) is a new method in analysis of composition,and it can achieve fast and environmentally friendly deter?mination . Systematic research is not enough in monitoring farm products by LIBS due to complicate matrix effect of samples.In this work,potatoes polluted in lab were chosen as the target.LIBS spectra of samples with differ?ent water contents were collected,and the effect of water on sensitivity of LIBS signal was analysed.The results showed that water plays an important role in sensitivity of LIBS. It is easy to detect the spectroscopy in drier samples.For Pb polluted dry samples,the spectra were gained by LIBS and the content of Pb was acquired by AAS.The linear relationship between LIBS intensity and AAS content was constructed.The results demonstrated that the correlation coefficient was preferable.This work displayed that it is feasible to detect Pb in potato.But about the natural samples with lower content of Pb,it is significant to improve the ability of LIBS in direct anal?ysis without any pretreatment.
[The Detection of Heavy Metals in Soil with Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy]

Abstract:The elemental concentration of Cr contained in soil is measured with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). As the LIBS laser power, the laser wavelength is of 1 064 nm with pulse width of 8 ns and laser repetition frequency of 10 Hz in this experiment and Cr 427.4 nm is selected as the analytical line of LIBS. The experimental results show that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the detected content of Cr is 12.1% at the delay time of 4.78 μs and the soil sample surface 1 mm behind lens focal point. The limit of detection (LOD) of LIBS is 2.01 ppm. The measured relative deviation between the measured value and the nature value is 5.15%. Because the LIBS has advantages such as lower LOD and higher detection precision, LIBS has a guiding significance to detect heavy metal in soil and to monitor environmental quality precisely and rapidly.

Abstract:Herein, a sensitivity enhancement technique for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) by atmospheric pressure glow discharge was proposed, while cylindrical confinement was used for further improvement. A comprehensive parameters evaluation of the proposed technique was carried out (at the laser energy of 30 mJ), with the emission intensities of Ti, Ni, Cu, Y, Ba, La, Eu, Yb, and Lu in soil samples enhanced by 17.8, 5.7, 5.2, 10.5, 7.4, 6.1, 8.7, 7.8, and 8.7 times, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) of Ti, Ni, Cu, Y, Ba, La, Eu, Yb, and Lu were significantly decreased from 246, 356, 133, 158, 10, 175, 102, 105, and 262 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> to 43, 67, 31, 20, 2, 35, 21, 18, and 49 mg kg<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. In addition, the possible signal enhancement mechanism was preliminarily explained by studying the plasma electron temperature and density with and without the proposed sensitization strategy.

Abstract:Water is the major natural resource that enables life on our planet. Rapid detection of water pollution that occurs due to both human activity and natural cataclysms is imperative for environmental protection. Analytical chemistry-based techniques are generally not suitable for rapid monitoring because they involve collection of water samples and analysis in a laboratory. Laser-based approaches such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) may offer a powerful alternative, yet conventional LIBS relies on the use of tightly focused laser beams, requiring a stable air-water interface in a controlled environment. Reported here is a proof-of-principle, quantitative, simultaneous measurement of several representative heavy-metal contaminants in water, at ppm-level concentrations, using ultraintense femtosecond laser pulses propagating in air in the filamentation regime. This approach is straightforwardly extendable to kilometer-scale standoff distances, under adverse atmospheric conditions and is insensitive to the movements of the water surface due to the topography and water waves.

Abstract:Spatial confinement has great potential for Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instruments after it has been proven that it has the ability to enhance the LIBS signal strength and repeatability. In order to achieve in-situ measurement of heavy metals in farmland soils by LIBS, a hemispherical spatial confinement device is designed and used to collect plasma spectra, in which the optical fibers directly collect the breakdown spectroscopy of the soil samples. This device could effectively increase the stability of the spectrum intensity of soil. It also has other advantages, such as ease of installation, and its small and compact size. The relationship between the spectrum intensity and the laser pulse energy is studied for this device. It is found that the breakdown threshold is 160 cm−2, and when the laser fluence increases to 250 J/cm2, the spectrum intensity reaches its maximum. Four different kinds of laser pulse energy were set up and in each case the limits of detection of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were calculated. The results show that when the laser pulse fluence was 2.12 GW/cm2, we obtained the smallest limits of detection of these heavy metals, which are all under 10 mg/kg. This device can satisfy the needs of heavy metal in-situ detection, and in the next step it will be integrated into a portable LIBS instrument.

Abstract:The highly sensitive detection of heavy metal elements in aqueous solutions has been achieved by the combination of circular groove and nanoparticle-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. The effects of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and circular grooves on the spectral emission of Cu, Pb and Cr have been investigated. The results show that both Ag NPs and circular grooves can enhance the spectral emission of heavy metal elements, and the circular grooves can improve the spectral reproducibility. The prepared micro/nano structure can suppress coffee ring effect and improve the absorption efficiency of light. The average relative standard deviation of the spectral emission can be diminished. By establishing the calibration curves for Cu, Pb, and Cr elements, the limits of detection (LODs) for Cu, Pb and Cr elements have been obtained. The results show that with employing Ag NPs and circular grooves the lowest LOD of 0.10 μg/mL can be achieved. This improved spectral performance (spectral intensity, stability and detection sensitivity) mainly originates from the collective oscillation of free electrons of Ag NPs excited by the incident laser pulse, which confines the electromagnetic energy with a strongly enhanced electric field. Electric field intensity enhancement of Ag NPs is calculated and the seed electron is proved to be prominently excited through multiphoton photoemission process under the experimental condition. The result provides an efficient pathway for improving the detection sensitivity of heave metals in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Liquid surface and liquid aerosol as the traditional liquid forms for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP), respectively, have been used to analyze chromium (Cr) and cadmium (Cd) elements using LIBS in a liquid solution. The spectral differences, the effects of laser energy and laser frequency, the accumulated number of laser pulses, gate delay time, and the quantitative analyses for a liquid surface and a liquid aerosol were compared. The results showed that the liquid surface demonstrated a lower plasma threshold, higher optical emission intensity, and higher single-to-noise ratio. Moreover, the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the intensities of the liquid aerosol are better than those of the liquid surface. Furthermore, the results of the quantitative analyses of Cr I 357.86 nm and Cd I 361.05 nm of the liquid surface are close to those of the liquid aerosol. The limit of detections of Cr and Cd of the liquid surface were 2.764 and 86.869 μg/mL, which were close to those of liquid aerosol, 2.847 μg/mL of Cr and 97.635 μg/mL of Cd. For both the liquid surface and liquid aerosol, the coefficient of determination R2 of the calibration curve for Cr and Cd were above 0.99, and the average RSDs of Cr and Cd of the liquid surface were 0.027 and 0.054, which were similar to the 0.020 of Cr and 0.042 of Cd of the liquid aerosol. These results suggest that both the liquid surface and aerosol have similar detection abilities for water quality monitoring.
Determination of Trace Heavy Metal Elements in Aqueous Solution Using Surface-Enhanced Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is one of the main problems in water pollution, which is harmful to humans. Surface-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SENLIBS) has been applied to detect trace amounts of heavy metal elements in aqueous solution; however, it is still a big challenge to explore the relationship between the LIBS detection sensitivity and the substrate's physical properties. In this work, four typical substrates, zinc (Zn), magnesium alloy (Mg), nickel (Ni), and silicon (Si), were compared; and the mechanism of spectral enhancement by different substrates in SENLIBS was investigated. The results indicated that the limit of detection (LoD) of heavy metal elements on different substrates is positively proportional to the boiling of the substrate. That is mainly because a higher plasma excitation temperature and electron density are obtained, leading to more intense collision between particles. The signal enhancement is associated with the lower boiling point of the substrate (corresponding to a lower ablation threshold and higher ablation quantity from the substrate). As a result, the best LoD was 0.0011 mg/L for chromium (Cr) and 0.004 mg/L for lead (Pb) on an optimal Zn substrate, respectively. The LoDs were sufficiently low to meet the drinking water sanitation standard. These results showed that the detection sensitivity of heavy metal elements in aqueous solution can be improved by choosing a substrate with a lower boiling point in SENLIBS.
