Abstract:This clinical commentary explores how drama therapy (DT) can become more inclusive for dis/abled trainees and clients. The author shares their subjective experiences as a dis/abled DT clinician-in-training, including how and when they have felt marginalized as a result of their body and identity. Challenges with training are explored in the context of reflecting on how they conflate with narratives shared by trainees who also identify as dis/abled. The pitfalls of self-advocacy and accommodations are examined through a social justice framework supported by the author’s personal narrative. An argument is made for universal design, followed by recommendations about how DT training and practice might achieve this.

Through three vignettes, each written by one of the students, reflections and observations are offered on how drama therapy programs may inadvertently support ableist practices and how these can and are being shifted to create more inclusive spaces. Recommendations are offered for drama therapy trainers and students alike, both in the classroom and in the field.
Disciplined Improvisation: Characteristics of Inquiry in Mindfulness-Based Teaching

Abstract:Evidence for the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is rapidly growing as interest in this field expands. By contrast, there are few empirical analyses of the pedagogy of MBSR and MBCT. Development of the evidence base concerning the teaching of MBCT or MBSR would support the integrity of the approach in the context of rapid expansion. This paper describes an applied conversation analysis (CA) of the characteristics of inquiry in the MBSR and MBCT teaching process. Audio-recordings of three 8-week MBCT and MBSR classes, with 24, 12, and 6 participants, were transcribed and systematically examined. The study focused on the teacher-led interactive inquiry which takes place in each session after a guided meditation practice. The study describes and analyzes three practices within the inquiry process that can be identified in sequences of talk: turn-taking talk involving questions and reformulations; the development of participant skills in a particular way of describing experience; and talk that constructs intersubjective connection and affiliation within the group. CA enables fine-grained analysis of the interactional work of mindfulness-based inquiry. Inquiry is a process of disciplined improvisation which is both highly specific to the conditions of the moment it took place in and uses repeated and recognizable patterns of interaction.
An experiment in integration : working with "Youth at-risk" in performative style drama therapy at the Centre for the Arts in Human Development (Concordia University)

Abstract:This paper presents the experience of two adolescents, traditionally labeled as "youth at-risk", involved in the collaboration of a public performance rising out of Performative Style Drama Therapy Process. This unique project combines the creativity and dedication of several groups of people including adults living with mental handicaps (the primary participants), University Creative Arts Therapists and the two so-called youth at-risk or whom we call "Cry Arts Apprentices". The focus is on the journey of the apprentices. The process is explored at several levels. The paper begins with a brief historical and factual overview of the phenomenon of Performative Style Drama Therapy and how it is approached at The Centre for the Arts in Human Development. In the second part of the study I have attempted to bring the phenomenon of "youth at-risk" to task by presenting the apprentices only through the descriptions of themselves. The project itself is presented in detail with transcripts of interviews and journal excerpts offered by the apprentices and other participants in the process. Themes and meanings that emerged through out the creation period and production are presented and considered in greater detail. The purpose of this research, for the most part, is to present a "successful" portrayal of integration through the Performative Style Drama Therapy process.

Abstract:This article explores the experiences of two research assistants and an assistant professor involved in teaching and research in Curriculum and Instruction in Drama Education, a course for pre-service teachers at a Canadian University. Direct observations, field notes, student journals, participant interviews and an in-depth analysis of one student group’s creation and performance led to the understanding of the significant role of drama education in fostering community amongst pre-service teachers. Informing the research findings is a conversation about the social postmodern notion of community that fosters a sense of belonging, trust, and safety. The foundations of community within drama education specifically prompt deeper considerations for inclusion, collaboration, and empowerment in education allowing for the conception of ‘human subject in pursuit of themselves’.

Abstract:In this clinical commentary, we present insights about introducing drama therapy in China. We highlight how challenging our own cultural assumptions regarding Chinese nationals, namely that they may feel restricted when entering dramatic reality, enabled the possibility of rich, detailed and ludic responses. Relying on our joint knowledge of drama therapy and a Chinese cultural context, with one from the United States and the other born in China, we designed a lecture and drama therapy process for Chinese nationals at a family communication conference in Beijing. We discovered diverse theatrical expression in our encounter with Chinese educators, therapists and students resulting largely from careful cultural preparation and an openness to experience.

Drama to promote social and personal well-being in six- and seven-year-olds with communication difficulties: the Speech Bubbles project

Abstract:Aims: This paper focuses on an innovative intersection between education, health and arts. Taking a broad definition of health it examines some social and psychological well-being impacts of extended collaborations between a theatre company and children with communication difficulties. It seeks to test aspects of Fredrickson's(1) broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions in a primary school curriculum context. Methods: The researcher participated in a project called Speech Bubbles. The programme was devised by theatre practitioners and aimed at six- and seven-year-olds with difficulties in speech, language and communication. Sessions were observed, videoed and analysed for levels of child well-being using an established scale. In addition, responses regarding perceived improvements in speech, language and communication were gathered from school records and teachers, teaching assistants, practitioners and parents. Data were captured using still images and videos, children's recorded commentaries, conversations, written feedback and observation. Using grounded research methods, themes and categories arose directly from the collected data. Results: Fluency, vocabulary, inventiveness and concentration were enhanced in the large majority of referred children. The research also found significant positive developments in motivation and confidence. Teachers and their assistants credited the drama intervention with notable improvements in attitude, behaviour and relationships over the year. Aspects of many children's psychological well-being also showed marked signs of progress when measured against original reasons for referral and normal expectations over a year. An unexpected outcome was evidence of heightened well-being of the teaching assistants involved. Conclusions: Findings compared well with expectations based upon Fredrickson's theory and also the theatre company's view that theatre-making promotes emotional awareness and empathy. Improvements in both children's well-being and communication were at least in part related to the sustained and playful emphases on the processes and practice of drama, clear values and an inclusive environment.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article explores the use of applied drama as a learning medium for trainee teachers who had not previously experienced the use of drama as a pedagogic approach, in an effort to develop professional relational skills, including conflict management. A quality content analysis approach was used, based on the responses of 64 participants to a questionnaire completed immediately following a drama workshop experience. One main theme – ‘the nature of learning through the medium of drama’ – and three other categories – ‘bridging theory and practice in teacher education’, ‘fostering courage and self-esteem’ and ‘cognitive engagement, shifts in perspectives and empathy’ – emerged from the analysis of the data. Such analysis indicates that applied drama could provide an effective teaching strategy for developing professionalism.

Abstract:Purpose: This paper explores concepts central to acting, and details how these concepts can be related to mental health nursing practice. Design and methods: The work of the acting theorists Constantin Stanislavski and Lee Strasberg is examined and recontextualized to illustrate how their work is relevant in modern mental health practice, and the development of empathy. Findings: While these concepts are still utilized in drama, they have not been fully explored in their original context. Their use could combat stress and burnout, heighten awareness, and enhance the projection of emotions. Practice implications: These concepts can be linked with reflective practice in mental health, and a stronger emphasis on the values of this approach could allow the nurse to strengthen the level of empathy they demonstrate.
A 6-Week Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment Intervention to Improve Professional Ballet Dancers' Psychological States Around Performance

Abstract:Background: Mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches have been trialled in professional sport. The present pilot study was a randomized controlled trial with professional ballet dancers investigating the effectiveness of the Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) approach, developed for athletes, compared to an education program which included topics relevant to ballet and performance. Methods: Participants included 16 professional ballet dancers (2 men and 14 women) who were randomly assigned into either the MAC or education group for 1 session per week, for 6 weeks. Participants were assessed pre-and post-intervention using the Mindfulness Inventory for Sport (MIS) and the Acceptance Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II). Within 2 weeks of the final mindfulness session, all participants completed a semi-structured interview. Results: No differences were found when comparing the questionnaire responses between pre- and post- intervention, nor between the MAC group and the control group at post intervention for all subscales. Although dancers reported in the interviews that the sessions were valuable, they advised their ability to dedicate time to mindfulness ongoing would be challenging. Conclusions: Mindfulness interventions, as explored in this study, show promise to promote the well-being of professional ballet dancers. For consistent and ongoing mindfulness practice, future designs should seek to embed mindfulness practice into dancer and company schedules.

Abstract:<span>As the research on mindfulness expands to include school-based interventions, middle school educators across the country have implemented mindfulness in the classroom. However, similar to other social-emotional learning approaches, when implemented in the absence of cultural context and trauma-informed care, mindfulness can be weaponized. In this paper we describe how educators can facilitate mindfulness practice in the classroom in affirming, culturally responsive and trauma-informed ways. In doing so, we propose a new vision for how mindfulness can further equity work in schools.</span>

Abstract:The vast majority of people around the world have been exposed to dramatic arts in some way, shape, or form, but only recently has drama therapy been accepted as a therapeutic treatment for individuals across the lifespan. This paper provides a general introduction to drama therapy and some of the techniques (e.g., role playing and storytelling) employed in its delivery and hands-on practice. In addition, the paper explores how drama therapy has been used to treat young people (approximately 10-17 years old) who have autism and/or social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties, and older adults (approximately 60-90 years old) who are experiencing normative or non-normative aging. The findings presented here suggest drama therapy may be an efficacious, healing treatment for a myriad of age groups. For instance, its positive effects on individuals with dementia have been observed, and an assortment of intra- and inter-personal improvements have been documented in youth. Considering drama therapy is still a growing field, less drama therapy research exists in comparison to its alternative treatments.

Abstract:In this article the author draws on classroom video recordings and student commentary to explore ways in which the kinaesthetic elements of a process drama provided the context and the space for beginner additional language learners to engage with intercultural language learning. In the light of student comments in interviews and questionnaires, she justifies the need for learners to experience the bodily aspect of communication as part of authentic, multi-modal interaction and hence a crucial element in intercultural literacy. Drawing on Kress's concept of interest as a motivation to make meaning, she suggests that learner interests are aroused by dramatic conventions whose multi-modal nature affords students access to multiple ways of participating in the narrative. She argues that a more conscious integration of the kinaesthetic mode into the additional language classroom can stimulate, scaffold and authenticate the verbal participation of beginner learners. Finally, given the students’ overwhelmingly positive response to the kinaesthetic elements of the work, she suggests that, despite the challenge of balancing drama and language imperatives, encouraging language teachers to venture into imaginative worlds and include a kinaesthetic dimension to their communicative practice could improve engagement and outcomes for beginner learners.

She puts forward a number of her ideas about love and politics; about simultaneous membership of different groups; about psychotherapy integration and the relation between Gestalt and other approaches; and about the place of drama in Gestalt experiments. She also reflects on her formative influences, on her present concerns, and her possible future. Gaie Houston was educated at Newark High School, gaining a state scholarship to go on to Oxford University. She has taught Gestalt since 1975 and is Emeritus Advisor to the Gestalt Centre, London. In addition to having a private practice and working internationally, she has written several books on Gestalt therapy, including the Red Book of Gestalt (1982) and Being and Belonging: Group, Intergroup and Gestalt (1993). Her extensive outside interests have included serving as an elected local government representative, coIlege lecturing, broadcasting, and writing plays (18 have been performed either on radio or stage). She has been married for 44 years to Toby Owen and they have a son and daughter and two grandchildren. Abstract:This article presents an exploratory and interpretative study on the development of self-reflection and self-knowledge in university teachers by an embodied experience. Dance Movement Therapy and Body–Mind Centering share the fundamentals of the paradigm of embodied cognition through a first-person full-body experience. Using these principles, a training program was designed and implemented in a cohort of 22 university teachers. The article offers details of the program and the adaptations necessary to carry it out in a higher-education context. The results of the qualitative analysis that was conducted suggested that the transformative learning paradigm could be useful to explain the process carried out by the participants. With the necessary limitations, the incorporation of awareness and attentive participation in bodily states and actions manifests as a transformative element in the teacher. The participants, despite initial resistance, see possibilities for applying this knowledge in their teaching practice.

Abstract:Viewpoints are a structural approach to training and directing for theatre. Originating from the innovative, inventive and exploratory approach of Mary Overlie and the self-confessed scavenger approach of Anne Bogart, Viewpoints offers a practical philosophy of working. As a training approach it begins with a disciplined engagement of the body in space and time. The tangible elements of the Viewpoints provide a set of tasks on which the student can focus, thus freeing the imagination and spirit to create. Yet at the same time the systematic logic of Viewpoints supports novice practitioners to begin to question their perception, invest in creative practice that demands action and exploration, and to deconstruct, re-organise and rebuild scores and sequences in the pursuit of theatre that is visceral and visual. This essay reports on undergraduate student experiences of learning Viewpoints. It interrogates the demands of embodied learning of the movement/structural system on non-dancers and examines student-actor experiences of embodied learning from multiple of subject positions – observer/participant/creator/reflector/actor.

Abstract:A strong evidence base is critical for deepening our understanding of how drama therapy works, how practice might be improved and how to best support the growth of the profession. Building on a previous investigation, the authors reviewed available peer-reviewed, English language, empirical drama therapy research from 1945–2018 to answer the question: what are the prominent themes in drama therapy effectiveness research? Within an effectiveness context, the following themes emerged from this analysis: emotional and behavioural symptoms, social skills and social interactions, self-confidence and self-esteem, sense of self and identity, self-expression, well-being, emotional regulation, empathy, academic performance, language and linguistic performance, stigma, bodily awareness, empowerment and spontaneity. Emergent trends in the literature are discussed and a summation of findings is presented. In reference to the findings, the authors advance a rationale for increasing drama therapy quantitative research with validated and reliable measures.
Drama for Schools: Impact of a Drama-Based Professional Development Program on Teacher Self-Efficacy and Authentic Instruction

Abstract:Drama for Schools (DFS) is a research-driven professional development program that uses drama-based instructional strategies to make sustainable improvements in the learning culture of a classroom, school, and school district. This article introduces the DFS program and reports findings on how 27 teachers experienced the program and worked with DFS strategies. Results show that authentic instruction improved as a result of the DFS program, with increases sustaining over time. Teacher evaluations indicate that DFS succeeded in efforts to integrate the arts into the curriculum, raise student engagement, encourage teacher collaboration, and develop hands-on instructional strategies. DFS teachers did not report much change in their own identities as teachers, perhaps due to the already high levels of instructional self-efficacy. Discussion includes consideration of research and pedagogical issues that arose in the evaluation of this drama-based professional development program.
The Bridge Between Documentary Theatre and Drama Therapy: Our Asian American Theatre Experiment

Abstract:This paper explores how documentary theatre and drama therapy use theatre to address issues of diversity, raise multicultural awareness, give silenced voices a chance to be heard, challenge social injustice, and inspire change in anti-oppression work. The paper is based on the author’s experience as the creator and director of Our Asian American Theatre Experiment , the featured production of UCSD’s 2nd Annual Asian American Theatre Festival in the spring of 2007. This was the same time period as the Virginia Tech shooting (April 16, 2007) and the fifteen-year commemoration of the Los Angeles riots (April 29, 1992). Inspired by the many works of documentary theatre dramatists, including Anna Deavere Smith, the author and a cast of fourteen undergraduate Asian American student actors worked with an extensive list of topics usually considered taboo within Asian American culture and communities, using the approach and methods of documentary theatre. The author describes the developmental process, challenges, and experiences during the preproduction, performance, and postproduction phases, including responses from the cast, audience, and community. The author examines the psychologically therapeutic qualities of documentary theatre and the capability of drama therapy to be socially influential by observing how use of the dramatic medium to deal with unspeakable issues and events has healing effects on both personal and societal levels. As supplemental information, the author cites relevant documentary theatre dramatists and drama therapists who link the psychological and social therapeutic characteristics that the two fields share.
