Abstract:Most traditional fillers used in electromagnetic shielding composites require high loading, uniform distribution and complicated structures for modest property enhancement. Here, we propose a simple shielding system incorporating magnetic microwires M and graphene fibers G in different arrangements. Integrating both fillers in the composite resulted in superior shielding effectiveness (SE) with respect to incorporating either individual type of filler, due to improved absorption efficiency, impedance matching and polarization triggered by different arrangements of the fillers. Randomly dispersed arrays provided a maximum shielding of 6 dB for equal amount of G and M, in which polarization effects at the interface between the two regions contributed to the SE value. The highest SE of 18 dB (98.4% attenuation) was reached by the MMMGGG periodic arrays with merely 0.059 wt % filler loading enabled by the optimized arrangement and wave attenuation from the microwires dielectric/magnetic response. The normalized SE of this composite was about two to four orders of magnitude higher than that of many other shielding candidate materials. High SE, low loading, simple structure, and multifunctionality make these composites attractive for several applications. Moreover, tailoring topological and structural factors of both fillers would facilitate further SE enhancement without sacrificing the important lightweight advantage.

Abstract:Highlights A new strategy for elaborate regulation of microstructure was successfully introduced by the ice template‐assisted 3D printing and chemical vapor deposition strategy, including graphene nanoplate/silicon carbide nanowires hierarchical porous structure and graphene nanoplate/boron nitride composite heterogeneous interface. The composite exhibits excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance with an RL min of -37.8 dB and an EAB max of 9.2 GHz (from 8.8 to 18.0 GHz) at 2.5 mm. And the high-temperature absorption stability makes it a promising absorber candidate under high temperature and oxidizing atmosphere.

Abstract:Nowadays, functional electronic devices with excellent flexibility and thermal management capability for effective electromagnetic wave absorption are urgently in demand. Herein, a novel and highly flexible silver nanowire (AgNW)/iron nanowire (FeNW) decorated melamine composite foam (AgFe-MF) was prepared via simple dip-coating process. Owing to optimal impedance matching, synergistic dielectric and magnetic losses as well as three-dimensional porous structure, the AgFe-MF with an ultra-low filler content (0.22 vol%) exhibited an outstanding minimum reflection loss of -69.61 dB, and the best effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) could reach up to 6.37 GHz. Importantly, the EAB of long-time working AgFe-MF was enhanced to 7.01 GHz after 1000 compress-release cycles under 40 % strain. Besides, it also featured considerate Joule heating capacity and achieved a saturation temperature of over 85.7 ℃ under 2.6 V voltage. The impressive thermal isolation and long-term stability ensured the safety used as portable heater. Therefore, this work will provide a vital slight for fabricating smart wearable electronic devices with integrated anti-electromagnetic radiation and personalized thermal management performances towards potential thermal and health threats.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern information technology, high-level electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials are playing an increasingly important role in military and civilian fields. However, current EMW absorbers usually have narrow absorption bandwidths and low absorption strengths, which hinder their practical applications. Herein, lightweight aerogels with low thermal conductivity and highly efficient EMW absorption were fabricated via a sol-gel method and subsequent carbothermal reduction with a simple chemical reaction process. The as-prepared graphene/SiC-nanosheets aerogels are composed of a large number of the interconnected two-dimensional SiC nanosheets and graphene sheets with abundant micrometer-sized pores that favored impedance matching, which endows the aerogels with outstanding EMW-absorbing performance. Conductive loss and interfacial polarization further promote the EMW-absorbing of the graphene/SiC-nanosheets aerogels. In addition, the highly porous and interconnected three-dimensional graphene/SiC-nanosheets aerogel networks not only facilitate the absorption of infiltrated EM waves via multiple reflection but also effectively reduce the number of heat transmission routes in the aerogels. The as-prepared SiC/G-2 aerogel exhibites excellent EMW-absorbing property, with a RL min of -65.08 dB at a frequency of 13.20 GHz, a thickness of 3.5 mm and an EAB of 2.21 GHz. These results demonstrate that the as-prepared graphene/SiC-nanosheets aerogel is fascinating material with possible applications in high-performance EMW-absorbing and heat-insulating in the aviation and aerospace fields.

Abstract:Robust graphene/silver nanowires (AgNWs) hybrid aerogels were fabricated by facile processes including mixing directly, reducing, and ambient pressure drying. The mechanical properties and electromagnetic interference (EMI)-shielding performance of the resultant hybrid aerogels were investigated in detail. Because silver nanowires with a high aspect ratio have been acting as crosslinkers to bridge two-dimensional graphene sheets, a highly porous and electrically conducting framework can resist high external loading to prevent major deformation and act as an express way for electron transport. Consequently, the hybrid aerogel exhibits large mechanical strength of 42 kPa, 35 times larger than that of the neat reduced graphene oxide aerogel (1.2 kPa), which can resist great damage. More importantly, the as-prepared aerogel possesses high EMI-shielding performance of up to ∼45.2 dB due to its unique nanostructure and good electrical properties. These results indicate that graphene/AgNWs hybrid aerogel prepared using this simplified method promises to be an ideal functional component for mechanically robust and high-performance EMI-shielding nanocomposites.

Abstract:Metal-based materials possess superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance because of their extraordinary electrical conductivity. Nevertheless, the high density and structural rigidity of metals seriously limit their applicability in portable and wearable electronic equipment. A common method for reducing the density of metal-based materials is to prepare metal nanowire aerogels by freeze-drying, but the weak connection among the nanowires results in poor mechanical and electrical properties. Herein, a facile approach is developed for the one-step synthesis of silver nanowire (AgNW) aerogels with ultralow density, good flexibility, high electrical conductivity, and a robust structure. The gel is directly formed by in situ assembly of AgNWs. The end-to-end nanojoining of AgNWs contributes to constructing an interconnected three-dimensional (3D) network, resulting in improved mechanical and electrical properties. The AgNW aerogel with an ultralow density of 4.87 mg cm(-3) demonstrates a high electrical conductivity of 4584 S m(-1). Moreover, the porous structure of the AgNW aerogel provides numerous interfaces for multiple reflections and scattering of EM waves, allowing them to be continuously absorbed and dissipated within the aerogel. Thus, the AgNW aerogel exhibits a superb EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 109.3 dB and a normalized surface specific SE (SSE/t, calculated as the SE divided by the density and thickness) of 353 183 dB cm(2) g(-1), significantly above that of previously known shielding materials. This work provides a new route for preparing high-performance metal nanowire aerogels and their great potential in EMI shielding.

Abstract:To alleviate and even eliminate electromagnetic pollution problems, it is inevitable to evolve materials that exhibit a desirable effect on attenuating microwaves with broad response frequency bandwidth and high absorption capacity, while thickness and weight are equally important. The combination of Fe/N-codoped carbon-based nanospheres (0 dimension) and graphene (2 dimension) are highly desirable for improving microwave absorption properties due to producing advantages between different portions. Herein, hollow Fe3O4 nanoparticles were selected as a hard template; through oxidation polymerization and high temperature carbonization processes in inert atmosphere, the designed structure, Fe/N-codoped hollow carbonaceous nanospheres, was anchored on the surface of reduced graphene oxide. As expected, the lightweight designed nanocomposites exhibited enhanced microwave absorption properties due to increased polarization loss (interfacial and dipole polarization), conductivity loss, and multiple resonance behaviors, with the minimum value of reflection loss achieved as -49.08 dB at 7.15 GHz, while the thickness is 2.5 mm, and the filler ratio is only 5%. In addition, the effective absorption bandwidth can be tuned from 3.1 to 18 GHz, validating them as promising next-generation microwave absorbing materials during practical application.

Abstract:With the rapid advancements in wireless communication and radar detection technologies, there has been a significant uptick in the utilization frequency of electromagnetic waves across both civilian and military sectors, consequently generating substantial electromagnetic radiation and interference. These electromagnetic pollutants present a considerable threat to public health and information security. Consequently, materials capable of absorbing and mitigating electromagnetic pollution have garnered significant attention. The nanomaterials with multiple components and various heterogeneous interfaces have been considered as preferred efficient electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers. In this work, carbon nanofibers doped with magnetic metal oxide particles (Co/Ni-CNFs) are prepared by electrospinning and heat treatment. In these samples, the minimum reflection loss can reach -40.13 dB at 4.6 mm, and the widest effective absorption bandwidth is 4.4 GHz. The excellent microwave absorption is attributed to the appropriate impedance matching. The electromagnetic parameters of Co/Ni-CNFs are balanced by adjusting the concentration of magnetic metal-organic framework material (MOFs) in the precursor solution. It is believed that this work can provide a reference for developing lightweight, flexible, and robust electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials.

Abstract:On the basis of high-efficiency electrostatic assembly, a type of ultralight, hydrophobic, hierarchically porous aerogels composed of metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived magnetic γ-Fe2O3@C/graphene are prepared via facile, scalable freeze-drying followed by annealing approach. The interaction between MOF and graphene oxide leads to the uniform dispersion of MOF-derived magnetic nanoparticles in the graphene-based cell walls, endowing the aerogels with high conductive and magnetic losses as well as polarization loss capacity derived from abundant heterogeneous interfaces. Both the core–shell microstructure of MOF derivative and the hierarchical pores of aerogels are instrumental in the multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves (EMWs), further promoting the EMW loss capability. Combined with the optimized impedance matching arising from the synergy between dielectric and magnetic components, an excellent EMW absorption performance of aerogel is achieved. At a filling ratio of merely 5 wt%, a minimum reflection loss of − 60.5 dB and a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 7.76 GHz covering the entire Ku-band are accomplished, significantly outperforming previously reported MOF- or graphene aerogel-based EMW absorbers. This work thus offers an efficient design strategy to prepare ultralight MOF-based aerogels for high-efficiency EMW absorbing materials in applications of electromagnetic compatibility and aerospace.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The development of lightweight, thin and high-efficiency electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers remains a huge challenge in the field of EM absorption. Graphene aerogels with three-dimensional (3D) network structure and low bulk density have been considered as potential EM absorbing materials. In this work, nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/hollow copper ferrite (NRGO/hollow CuFe2O4) composite aerogels were fabricated by the three-step method of solvothermal reaction, hydrothermal self-assembly and calcination treatment. The as-prepared composite aerogels had a unique 3D hierarchical porous network structure. Furthermore, results demonstrated that the EM absorption performance of attained composite aerogels could be improved by adjusting the calcination temperature. Notably, the obtained composite aerogel calcined at 400.0 ℃ exhibited the best EM absorption performance. When the loading ratio was as low as 15.0 wt%, the minimum reflection loss reached up to -54.5 dB with a matching thickness of 2.0 mm, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 5.0 GHz could be achieved under an extremely thin thickness of 1.6 mm. Additionally, the probable EM attenuation mechanisms of attained composite aerogels were proposed. The results of this work could be helpful for developing graphene-based 3D composites as lightweight, thin and high-efficiency EM wave absorbers.

Abstract:In the design of microwave absorbing materials, synergistically optimizing the relationship between impedance matching and attenuation constant remains a great challenge. In this work, a hierarchically porous graphene/iron trioxide magnetic composite foam (GMF) is successfully constructed by an electrostatic assembly of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) in reduced graphene oxide skeletons and subsequent annealing treatment. As a unique template, the in-situ pyrolysis of MOF facilitates the transition from flake-like MOF to anisotropic porous magnetic nanosheet (Fe 2 O 3 ), promoting the composites to break Snoek's limitation. The combination between magnetic nanosheets and conductive graphene skeletons can further optimize the impedance gradient and attenuation constant of those foams. More importantly, the successful construction of hierarchically porous magnetic foam from micro-to nano-sized pores effectively induces the generation of huge multiple scattering and defect polarization. As a result, more incident electromagnetic waves thus are allowed to enter the materials and dissipate as much as possible after entering the foam, endowing the composite foam with an excellent absorption capacity (−60.13 dB) and bandwidth (6.23 GHz).

Abstract:Developing flexible, lightweight, and highly efficient electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials was an effective strategy for mitigating the adverse health effects of microwaves. However, synthesizing flexible wave-absorbing aerogels via a novel method is challenging. In this study, a 3D porous reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/SiO2–C nanofibers (NFs)/Li0.35Zn0.3Fe2.35O4 (LZFO) flexible composite aerogel with a crosslinked structure was synthesized via electrospinning, freeze-drying, and in situ curing. To achieve this, electrospun SiO2 and polyacrylonitrile NFs, graphene oxide (GO), and LZFO nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in an aqueous solution containing (Al(H3PO4)3) as a crosslinking agent and a crosslinked aerogel was formed by freeze-drying, pre-oxidation and carbonization. The obtained aerogels exhibited a good 3D porous structure. By introducing (Al(H3PO4)3) the cell binding force between the 0D, 1D and 2D materials was improved. Further, the introduction of SiO2 NFs reduced the brittleness of the C NFs and improved the flexibility of the aerogel. Under 60% strain, the stress reached 132 kPa, and a complete closed loop was formed. The RGO and C NFs conductive network coupled with the LZFO nanoparticles magnetic network form an ideal impedance matching. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the RGO/SiO2–C NFs/LZFO-2 aerogel reached −55.2 dB (2.5 mm), and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was 5.5 GHz (2 mm) to cover the entire X-band. Moreover, by adjusting the matching thickness (2–4 mm), the RL min was below −20 dB, and more than 99% of the EMW was absorbed. This study provides a new way to develop flexible absorbent materials for human protection.

Abstract:The design of innovative microstructures and the implementation of an appropriate multi-component strategy remain challenging in the development of advanced electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials. Achieving strong absorption and a wide effective absorption bandwidth while maintaining a thin sample thickness and low filling level is particularly demanding. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) dielectric cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/Ti3C2Tx MXene carbon aerogel, incorporating magnetic Fe3O4 nanodiscs (NDs), was fabricated using a directional-freezing technique followed by reduction. Surprisingly, the reduction process activates the multifunctional application of aerogel with better elasticity and greatly improved electromagnetic properties, killing two birds with one stone. The structured cellular arrangement and the presence of diverse dielectric/magnetic interfaces contribute to the exceptional absorption capabilities by facilitating optimal impedance matching, enabling multiple polarization modes, and fostering electric/magnetic coupling phenomena. The aerogel exhibits excellent microwave absorption properties, characterized by its ultra-lightweight (3 % of filling ratio and 4.65 mg cm−3 of density), ultra-thin (2.18 mm), ultra-wide frequency band (6.68 GHz) and strong absorption (-56.8 dB). Additionally, the aerogel provides attractive functions such as thermal insulation and great mechanical properties (100 % recovery after 1000 cycles under 50 % strain). This study lays the groundwork for the advancement of microwave-absorbing materials, showcasing their vast potential for multifaceted applications.

Abstract:It is well known that the surface architecture of an absorber has a significant effect on the final electromagnetic (EM) wave attenuation behavior. Herein, a series of nanoporous carbon media with different surface morphologies, including a honeycomb-like structure, three dimension (3D) interrelated network, and irregular lump shape, were obtained by a facile one-step strategy employing the green biomass of wheat flour as the precursor. By optimizing the surface architecture, it is demonstrated that the elaborate 3D interrelated skeleton makes a crucial contribution on the eventual EM absorption performance. Abstract:Electromagnetic waves (EMWs) from advanced electronic devices can hinder normal operation of other electronic equipment, negatively affecting their performance and cause harmful impacts on human health by breaking down DNA strands and causing cancer. In this study, we thrivingly prepared new lightweight EMW absorbing aerogel composites by first blending polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), carbon nanotube (CNT), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and carbonyl iron (CI), followed by freeze-drying. The materials are promising for up-scale production with the current pilot-scale samples sizing 35 cm × 35 cm. The effects of CNT types, CNT, rGO, CI, and crosslinker contents on EMW absorption ability are comprehensively investigated. The obtained aerogel composites exhibit a 3D porous structure with low densities (0.088–0.210 g/cm 3 ), high thermal stability (227 °C), and high Young's modulus (670.9 kPa) compared to past aerogels. Notably, the materials with 3.0–3.5 mm in thickness achieve the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of up to −42 dB (99.99 % EMW energy lost) and provide coverage across the entire X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) with RL < −10 dB, indicating a 90 % attenuation of EMW energy. Compared to commercial Ni/CNT and other existing composites, our materials boast a broader effective bandwidth of 1.2–2.2 GHz. These properties make our aerogel composites highly promising for valuable commercial use, offering lightweight, durable, and efficient EMW absorption capabilities.

Abstract:Nano, Ahead of Print. Graphene/Ag composite aerogels (GA/Ag) with three-dimensional hierarchical porous microstructure were prepared by in-situ formation of silver nanoparticles obtained from AgNO3 into the porous structure of graphene aerogel. When the used AgNO3 concentration was 12[math]wt.%, the specific surface area of the obtained GA/Ag was 128.6[math]m2g[math], which was higher than that of GA. GA/Ag exhibited electrical resistivity of 0.63[math][math][math]cm and excellent microwave absorption property with the minimum reflection loss of −40[math]dB at 10.9[math]GHz with the corresponding effective absorption bandwidth of 4[math]GHz (8.8–12.8[math]GHz). The GA/Ag composite aerogels enabled multiple reflection loss and absorption of incident electromagnetic waves, realizing excellent microwave absorption effects based on impedance matching and efficient synergy. It could be predicted that GA/Ag with a hierarchical porous structure may show potential application prospects in the field of microwave absorption.

Abstract:Graphene-based aerogels have indeed generated significant interest in manufacturing microwave absorbers with ultra-low density and high efficiency. Nevertheless, unitary loss mechanism and impedance mismatch hinder corresponding application. Furthermore, it is essential to address the challenges related to structure control strategy and explanation of the loss mechanism. Dual-chamber graphene-based aerogel microspheres (AMs) with heterogeneous interfaces were fabricated through electrospinning-freeze drying and subsequent calcination. Significant differences are observed in reflecting and scattering of shell and dual-chamber structure against electromagnetic wave (EMW), enabling electromagnetic oscillation, sequential absorption and multi-level coupling of EMW. In addition, the dual-chamber construction is a pivotal role in optimizing impedance matching. In this regard, dual-chamber structure graphene-based AMs with 5 wt% loading were synthesized and exhibited excellent loss ability to EMW in the range of 5∼18 GHz, which manifest −28.12 dB at 15.62 GHz, and accordingly, the f E is 6.0 GHz at 2.2 mm thickness, achieving full coverage dissipation of Ku-band. The results demonstrate that the dual-chamber graphene-based AMs achieve the effect of multi-frequency compatible and broadband microwave absorption at low thickness. The integration of the ideation of heterogeneous dual-chamber AMs with electromagnetic-oscillation and sequential loss provides a unique and innovative strategy for modulating lightweight and broadband efficiency absorbers.

Abstract:High efficient microwave absorption materials are in emergent demand for civil and military application, especially these with light weight and broad absorption bandwidth. In this work, lightweight microwave absorbers consisting of hollow nickel nanoparticles modified reduced graphene oxide (GHN) and epoxy matrix have been successfully prepared via chemical etching method and solution blending process. SEM and TEM images showed that hollow Ni nanospheres are uniformly anchored on the surface of graphene sheets. The introduction of magnetic Ni nanoparticles into dielectric graphene improved integral properties, not only reducing the density but also enhancing microwave absorption capacity. Compared with single hollow Ni samples or graphene samples, GHN/epoxy samples exhibited extraordinary performance originating from the specific structure and multiple loss mechanism. A delta-function and microwave attenuation constant were adopted to quantitatively evaluating the impedance matching condition and microwave energy consumption ability. For GHN-10 samples, optimal reflection loss (RL) could reach up to -33.1 dB with a matching thickness of 4.9 mm. As the coating thickness decreased to 2 mm, the corresponding RI. still remained an acceptable numerical value of -23.8 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth extended to about 6.5 GHz (11.5-18 GHz), covering the whole Ku band. The as-synthesized high-performance microwave absorbers would pave a new and promising way to obtain lightweight, broad-band and strong microwave absorption materials.
