Abstract:In recent years, a lot of research was devoted to Simpson's rule for numerical integration. In the paper we study a natural successor of Simpson's rule, namely the Boole's rule. It is the Newton-Cotes formula in the case where the interval of integration is divided into four subintervals of equal length. With computer software assistance, we prove novel error bounds for Boole's rule.

Abstract:Computational logic is the use of computers to establish facts in a logical formalism. Originating in nineteenth century attempts to understand the nature of mathematical reasoning, the subject now comprises a wide variety of formalisms, techniques and technologies. One strand of work follows the ‘logic for computable functions (LCF) approach’ pioneered by Robin Milner, where proofs can be constructed interactively or with the help of users’ code (which does not compromise correctness). A refinement of LCF, called Isabelle, retains these advantages while providing flexibility in the choice of logical formalism and much stronger automation. The main application of these techniques has been to prove the correctness of hardware and software systems, but increasingly researchers have been applying them to mathematics itself.

Abstract:Methods of solving big Boolean equations can be broadly classified as algebraic, tabular, numerical and map methods. The most prominent among these classes are the algebraic and map methods. This paper surveys and compares these two types of methods as regards simplicity, efficiency, and usability. The paper identifies the main types of solutions of Boolean equations as subsumptive general solutions, parametric general solutions and particular solutions. In a subsumptive general solution, each of the variables is expressed as an interval based on successive conjunctive or disjunctive eliminants of the original function. In a parametric general solution each of the variables is expressed via arbitrary parameters which are freely chosen elements of the underlying Boolean algebra. A particular solution is an assignment from the underlying Boolean algebra to every pertinent variable that makes the Boolean equation an identity. The paper offers a tutorial exposition, review, and comparison of the three types of solutions by way of an illustrative example. This example is also viewed from the perspective of a recently developed technique that relies on atomic decomposition. Map techniques are demonstrated to be at least competitive with (and occasionally superior to) algebraic techniques, since they have a better control on the minimality of the pertinent function representations, and hence are more capable of producing more compact solutions.

Abstract:Starting from a general dynamic analysis of reasoning and programming, we develop two main dynamic perspectives upon logic programming. First, the standard fixed point semantics for Horn clause programs naturally supports imperative programming styles. Next, we provide axiomatizations for Prolog-type inference engines using calculi of sequents employing modified versions of standard structural rules such as monotonicity or permutation. Finally, we discuss the implications of all this for a broader enterprise of ‘abstract proof theory’.

Abstract:New foundations for quantum logic and quantum spaces are constructed by merging algebraic quantum theory and topos theory. Interpreting Bohr's "doctrine of classical concepts" mathematically, given a quantum theory described by a noncommutative C*-algebra A, we construct a topos T(A), which contains the "Bohrification" B of A as an internal commutative C*-algebra. Then B has a spectrum, a locale internal to T(A), the external description S(A) of which we interpret as the "Bohrified" phase space of the physical system. As in classical physics, the open subsets of S(A) correspond to (atomic) propositions, so that the "Bohrified" quantum logic of A is given by the Heyting algebra structure of S(A). The key difference between this logic and its classical counterpart is that the former does not satisfy the law of the excluded middle, and hence is intuitionistic. When A contains sufficiently many projections (e.g. when A is a von Neumann algebra, or, more generally, a Rickart C*-algebra), the intuitionistic quantum logic S(A) of A may also be compared with the traditional quantum logic, i.e. the orthomodular lattice of projections in A. This time, the main difference is that the former is distributive (even when A is noncommutative), while the latter is not. Abstract:Logic has pride of place in mathematics and its 20th century offshoot, computer science. Modern symbolic logic was developed, in part, as a way to provide a formal framework for mathematics: Frege, Peano, Whitehead and Russell, as well as Hilbert developed systems of logic to formalize mathematics. These systems were meant to serve either as themselves foundational, or at least as formal analogs of mathematical reasoning amenable to mathematical study, e.g., in Hilbert's consistency program. Similar efforts continue, but have been expanded by the development of sophisticated methods to study the properties of such systems using proof and model theory. In parallel with this evolution of logical formalisms as tools for articulating mathematical theories (broadly speaking), much progress has been made in the quest for a mechanization of logical inference and the investigation of its theoretical limits, culminating recently in the development of new foundational frameworks for mathematics with sophisticated computer-assisted proof systems. In addition, logical formalisms developed by logicians in mathematical and philosophical contexts have proved immensely useful in describing theories and systems of interest to computer scientists, and to some degree, vice versa. Three examples of the influence of logic in computer science are automated reasoning, computer verification, and type systems for programming languages.

Abstract:This paper provides an overview of common challenges in teaching of logic and formal methods to Computer Science and IT students. We discuss our experiences from the course IN3050: Applied Logic in Engineering, introduced as a "logic for everybody" elective course at at TU Munich, Germany, to engage pupils studying Computer Science, IT and engineering subjects on Bachelor and Master levels. Our goal was to overcome the bias that logic and formal methods are not only very complicated but also very boring to study and to apply. In this paper, we present the core structure of the course, provide examples of exercises and evaluate the course based on the students' surveys.

Abstract:This book can be seen either as a text on theorem proving that uses techniques from general algebra, or else as a text on general algebra illustrated and made concrete by practical exercises in theorem proving. The book considers several different logical systems, including first-order logic, Horn clause logic, equational logic, and first-order logic with equality. Similarly, several different proof paradigms are considered. However, we do emphasize equational logic, and for simplicity we use only the OBJ3 software system, though it is used in a rather flexible manner. We do not pursue the lofty goal of mechanizing proofs like those of which mathematicians are justly so proud; instead, we seek to take steps towards providing mechanical assistance for proofs that are useful for computer scientists in developing software and hardware. This more modest goal has the advantage of both being achievable and having practical benefits. The following topics are covered: many-sorted signature, algebra and homomorphism; term algebra and substitution; equation and satisfaction; conditional equations; equational deduction and its completeness; deduction for conditional equations; the theorem of constants; interpretation and equivalence of theories; term rewriting, termination, confluence and normal form; abstract rewrite systems; standard models, abstract data types, initiality, and induction; rewriting and deduction modulo equations; first-order logic, models, and proof planning; second-order algebra; order-sorted algebra and rewriting; modules; unification and completion; and hidden algebra. Abstract:A central topic in mathematical logic is the classification of theorems from mathematics in hierarchies according to their logical strength. Ideally, the place of a theorem in a hierarchy does not depend on the representation (aka coding) used. In this paper, we show that the standard representation of compact metric spaces in second-order arithmetic has a profound effect. To this end, we study basic theorems for such spaces like a continuous function has a supremum and a countable set has measure zero. We show that these and similar third-order statements imply at least Feferman's highly non-constructive projection principle, and even full second-order arithmetic or countable choice in some cases. When formulated with representations (aka codes), the associated second-order theorems are provable in rather weak fragments of second-order arithmetic. Thus, we arrive at the slogan that coding compact metric spaces in the language of second-order arithmetic can be as hard as second-order arithmetic or countable choice. We believe every mathematician should be aware of this slogan, as central foundational topics in mathematics make use of the standard second-order representation of compact metric spaces. In the process of collecting evidence for the above slogan, we establish a number of equivalences involving Feferman's projection principle and countable choice. We also study generalisations to fourth-order arithmetic and beyond with similar-but-stronger results.

Abstract:This introduction begins with a section on fundamental notions of mathematical logic, including propositional logic, predicate or first-order logic, completeness, compactness, the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, Craig interpolation, Beth's definability theorem and Herbrand's theorem. It continues with a section on Gödel's incompleteness theorems, which includes a discussion of first-order arithmetic and primitive recursive functions. This is followed by three sections that are devoted, respectively, to proof theory (provably total recursive functions and Goodstein sequences for $\mathsf{I\Sigma}_1$), computability (fundamental notions and an analysis of Kőnig's lemma in terms of the low basis theorem) and model theory (ultraproducts, chains and the Ax-Grothendieck theorem). We conclude with some brief introductory remarks about set theory (with more details reserved for a separate lecture). The author uses these notes for a first logic course for undergraduates in mathematics, which consists of 28 lectures and 14 exercise sessions of 90 minutes each. In such a course, it may be necessary to omit some material, which is straightforward since all sections except for the first two are independent of each other.

Abstract:Boethius was the most important philosopher during the development from ancient logic to medieval logic. He planned to put into Latin every work of Aristotle and all the dialogues of Plato, but only translated Aristotle' s Organon for he found later much essential contradiction between the two greatest authorities and that translating all of the works would unavoidably show their divergences to the Latin Romans. Boethius' translations and commentaries were the only bibliographies for the Latin scholars to study ancient logic before the 12th century. The nature of the universe is always the fundamental issue of logic and philosophy. The study of it was enhanced by Porphyry with his three famous questions, but he made no conclusions to them. Boethius' research into it was to resolve Porphyry' s questions and settle the controversies about the relation between logic and philosophy. He believed that genus or species is made sensible when in individual things, when it is in universals it is made intelligible; and in the same way when it is sensible, it remains in individuals, when it is understood, it is made universal; therefore they subsist in the sensible, but they are understood without bodies. This answer was Boethius' marked contribution to logic. However, it induced medieval philosophers to divide into two parts: Nominalists and Realists. Boethius also criticized Porphyry for considering logic as the tool of philosophy. He believed that logic is both the instrument and a part of philosophy. This assertion had an inestimable influence on the development of logic. Proposition logic is the most brilliant part of Boethian logic. He tried to define the hypothetical (or conditional) proposition in the Megara-Stoic tradition. Hypothetical proposition can be formed in two ways, accidentally, or so as to have some natural consequence. Accidentally in this way, as when we say 'when fire is hot, the sky is round' . It means that a hypothetical proposition is true if and only if when its antecedent is true and its consequent cannot be false. It is equivalent to the material implication of modern logic. As to the propositions which have within them a natural consequence, we might say ' when man is, animal is' . That is, the antecedent of a hypothetical proposition necessarily implies its consequent. It can be interpreted as modern strict implication. Moreover, Boethius listed 38 hypothetical syllogisms through which he re-established the due position of proposition logic in the whole logic theories after Stoics. Boethian logic was the main source of medieval logic.
