Abstract:Superconducting circuits based on Josephson junctions exhibit macroscopic quantum coherence and can behave like artificial atoms. Recent technological advances have made it possible to implement atomic-physics and quantum-optics experiments on a chip using these artificial atoms. This Review presents a brief overview of the progress achieved so far in this rapidly advancing field. We not only discuss phenomena analogous to those in atomic physics and quantum optics with natural atoms, but also highlight those not occurring in natural atoms. In addition, we summarize several prospective directions in this emerging interdisciplinary field.

Abstract:Superconducting circuits using Josephson junctions, behaving as nonlinear inductors, can act as artificial atoms displaying macroscopic quantum coherence. Therefore, atomic physics and quantum optics experiments on a chip can be performed using these artificial atoms. This chapter presents a brief overview of this exciting and fast-growing field. We discuss the analogies with atomic physics and quantum optics occurring in natural atoms, and also describe the differences with natural atoms. We also summarize some current trends in this interdisciplinary field of microwave photonics. These circuits provide an unprecedented level of control over quantum states, and this can be useful for future quantum information processors.

Abstract:We review progress in the development and applications of superconducting metamaterials. The review is organized in terms of several distinct advantages and unique properties brought to the metamaterials field by superconductivity. These include the low-loss nature of the meta-atoms, their compact structure, their extraordinary degree of nonlinearity and tunability, magnetic flux quantization and the Josephson effect, quantum effects in which photons interact with quantized energy levels in the meta-atom, as well as strong diamagnetism.

Abstract:In the past 20 years, impressive progress has been made both experimentally and theoretically in superconducting quantum circuits, which provide a platform for manipulating microwave photons. This emerging field of superconducting quantum microwave circuits has been driven by many new interesting phenomena in microwave photonics and quantum information processing. For instance, the interaction between superconducting quantum circuits and single microwave photons can reach the regimes of strong, ultra-strong, and even deep-strong coupling. Many higher-order effects, unusual and less familiar in traditional cavity quantum electrodynamics with natural atoms, have been experimentally observed, e.g., giant Kerr effects, multi-photon processes, and single-atom induced bistability of microwave photons. These developments may lead to improved understanding of the counterintuitive properties of quantum mechanics, and speed up applications ranging from microwave photonics to superconducting quantum information processing. In this article, we review experimental and theoretical progress in microwave photonics with superconducting quantum circuits. We hope that this global review can provide a useful roadmap for this rapidly developing field.

The recent progress and achievement described with principle and technical details include mainly i) applied superconducting materials; ii) superconducting magnets and their applications such as in ITER and Tokamaks; iii) high T c superconducting (HTS) magnetic levitation and applications; iv) HTS smart grids; v) superconducting and electromagnetic material modelling and characterization; and vi) advanced electromagnetic devices. The applied superconductivity technology and availability are especially focused and verified with the trend of development prospection.

Abstract:Hybrid quantum circuits combine two or more physical systems, with the goal of harnessing the advantages and strengths of the different systems in order to better explore new phenomena and potentially bring about novel quantum technologies. This article presents a brief overview of the progress achieved so far in the field of hybrid circuits involving atoms, spins and solid-state devices (including superconducting and nanomechanical systems). How these circuits combine elements from atomic physics, quantum optics, condensed matter physics, and nanoscience is discussed, and different possible approaches for integrating various systems into a single circuit are presented. In particular, hybrid quantum circuits can be fabricated on a chip, facilitating their future scalability, which is crucial for building future quantum technologies, including quantum detectors, simulators, and computers.

Abstract:Recent improvements in materials growth and fabrication techniques may finally allow for superconducting semiconductors to realize their potential. Here, we build on a recent proposal to construct superconducting devices such as wires, Josephson junctions, and qubits inside and out-of single crystal silicon or germanium. Using atomistic fabrication techniques such as STM hydrogen lithography, heavily doped superconducting regions within a single crystal could be constructed. We describe the characteristic parameters of basic superconducting elementsa 1-D wire and a tunneling Josephson junctionand estimate the values for boron-doped silicon. The epitaxial, single-crystal nature of these devices, along with the extreme flexibility in device design down to the single-atom scale, may enable lower noise or new types of devices and physics. We consider applications for such supersilicon devices, showing that the state-of-the-art transmon qubit and the sought-after phase-slip qubit can both be realized. The latter qubit leverages the natural high kinetic inductance of these materials. Building on this, we explore how kinetic inductance-based particle detectors (e.g., photon or phonon) could be realized with potential application in astronomy or nanomechanics. We discuss supersemi devices (such as in silicon, germanium, or diamond) which would not require atomistic fabrication approaches and could be realized today.

A Review of Design Concerns in Superconducting Quantum Circuits

Abstract:In this short review we describe the process of designing a superconducting circuit device for quantum information applications. We discuss the factors that must be considered to implement a desired effective Hamiltonian on a device. We describe the translation between a device's physical layout, the circuit graph, and the effective Hamiltonian. We go over the process of electromagnetic simulation of a device layout to predict its behavior. We also discuss concerns such as connectivity, crosstalk suppression, and radiation shielding, and how they affect both on-chip design and enclosure structures. This paper provides an overview of the challenges in superconducting quantum circuit design and acts as a starter document for researchers working on any of these challenges.

High-frequency applications of high-temperature superconductor thin films

Abstract:High-temperature superconducting thin films offer unique properties which can be utilized for a variety of high-frequency device applications in many areas related to the strongly progressing market of information technology. One important property is an exceptionally low level of microwave absorption at temperatures attainable with low power cryocoolers. This unique property has initiated the development of various novel type of microwave devices and commercialized subsystems with special emphasis on application in advanced microwave communication systems. The second important achievement related to efforts in oxide thin and multilayer technology was the reproducible fabrication of low-noise Josephson junctions in high-temperature superconducting thin films. As a consequence of this achievement, several novel nonlinear high-frequency devices, most of them exploiting the unique features of the ac?Josephson effect, have been developed and found to exhibit challenging properties to be utilized in basic metrology and Terahertz technology. On the longer timescale, the achievements in integrated high-temperature superconductor circuit technology may offer a strong potential for the development of digital devices with possible clock frequencies in the range of 100?GHz.

Abstract:The interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the superconductor/ferromagnet (SC/FM) heterostructures generates many interesting physical phenomena, including spin-triplet superconductivity, superconducting order parameter oscillation, and topological superconductivity. The unique physical properties make the SC/FM heterostructure as promising platforms for future superconducting spintronics and quantum computation applications. In this article, important research progress of SC/FM heterostructures from superconducting spintronics to quantum computation is reviewed, and it is organized as follows. First, the progress of spin current carriers in SC/FM heterostructures including Bogoliubov quasiparticles, superconducting vortex, and spin-triplet Cooper pairs which might be used for long-range spin transport is discussed. Then, the pi Josephson junctions and their application for constructing pi qubits are described. Finally, experimental signatures of Majorana states in the SC/FM heterostructures and the theoretically proposed manipulation are briefly reviewed, which could be useful to realize fault-tolerant topological quantum computing.

Abstract:The importance of modulations has been elevated to an unprecedented level, due to the delicate conditions required to bring out exotic phenomena in quantum materials, such as topological materials, magnetic materials, and superconductors. Recently, state‐of‐the‐art modulation techniques in material science, such as electric double‐layer transistor, piezoelectric‐based strain apparatus, angle twisting, and nanofabrication, are utilized in superconductors. They not only efficiently increase the tuning capability to the broader ranges, but also extend the tuning dimensionality to unprecedented degrees of freedom, including quantum fluctuations of competing phases, electronic correlation, and phase coherence essential to global superconductivity. Here, for a comprehensive review, these techniques together with the established modulation methods, such as elemental substitution, annealing, and polarization‐induced gating, are contextualized. Depending on the mechanism of each method, the modulations are categorized into stoichiometric manipulation, electrostatic gating, mechanical modulation, and geometrical design. Their recent advances are highlighted by applications in newly discovered superconductors, e.g., nickelates, Kagome metals, and magic‐angle graphene. Overall, the review is to provide systematic modulations in emergent superconductors and serve as the coordinate for future investigations, which will stimulate researchers in superconductivity and other fields to perform various modulations towards a thorough understanding of quantum materials. Abstract:Topological quantum materials hold great promise for future technological applications. Their unique electronic properties, such as protected surface states and exotic quasiparticles, offer opportunities for designing novel electronic devices, spintronics, and quantum information processing. The origin of the interplay between various electronic orders in topological quantum materials, such as superconductivity and magnetism, remains unclear, particularly whether these electronic orders cooperate, compete, or simply coexist. Since the 2000s, the combination of topology and matter has sparked a tremendous surge of interest among theoreticians and experimentalists alike. Novel theoretical descriptions and predictions, as well as complex experimental setups confirming or refuting these theories, continuously appear in renowned journals. This review aims to provide conceptual tools to understand the fundamental concepts of this ever-growing field. Superconductivity and its historical development will serve as a second pillar alongside topological materials. While the primary focus will be on topological superconductors, other topological materials, such as topological insulators and topological semimetals, will also be explained phenomenologically.

Abstract:Power and energy consumed by a high-performance computing system are a significant problem nowadays. Superconducting computing technology may offer an attractive low-power alternative to traditional complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology due to the ultrafast and low power switching characteristics of superconductor devices. We offer a relatively comprehensive review of the latest development of superconducting computing technology from aspects of logic circuits, emerging superconducting architectures, and automated design tools. In light of the inner operation mechanisms, we classify the superconducting single flux quantum (SFQ) logic family into six major categories and discuss their respective strengths and weaknesses. Also, many novel superconducting architectures have been proposed, such as dual-clocks-based superconducting circuits, superconducting accelerators, and superconducting neuromorphic circuits. However, their effectiveness needs further evaluation, and their manufacturability is still unknown. Additional efforts are also demanded to enhance the electronic design automation of very large-scale integration (VLSI) SFQ circuits while maintaining a relatively low cost in area and power. We also discuss open challenges and future directions in the superconducting computing area of research.
On-chip superconducting microwave circulator from synthetic rotation

Abstract:We analyze the design of a potential replacement technology for the commercial ferrite circulators that are ubiquitous in contemporary quantum superconducting microwave experiments. The lossless, lumped element design is capable of being integrated on chip with other superconducting microwave devices, thus circumventing the many performance-limiting aspects of ferrite circulators. The design is based on the dynamic modulation of DC superconducting microwave quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) that function as nearly linear, tunable inductors. The connection to familiar ferrite-based circulators is a simple frame boost in the internal dynamics' equation of motion. In addition to the general, schematic analysis, we also give an overview of many considerations necessary to achieve a practical design with a tunable center frequency in the 4-8 GHz frequency band, a bandwidth of 240 MHz, reflections at the -20 dB level, and a maximum signal power of approximately order 100 microwave photons per inverse bandwidth.

Abstract:Superconducting diode effect, in analogy to the nonreciprocal resistive charge transport in semiconducting diode, is a nonreciprocity of dissipationless supercurrent. Such an exotic phenomenon originates from intertwining between symmetry-constrained supercurrent transport and intrinsic quantum functionalities of helical/chiral superconductors. In this article, research progress of superconducting diode effect including fundamental concepts, material aspects, device prospects, and theoretical/experimental development is reviewed. First, fundamental mechanisms to cause superconducting diode effect including simultaneous space-inversion and time-reversal symmetry breaking, magnetochiral anisotropy, interplay between spin-orbit interaction energy and the characteristic energy scale of supercurrent carriers, and finite-momentum Cooper pairing are discussed. Second, the progress of superconducting diode effect from theoretical predictions to experimental observations are reviewed. Third, interplay between various system parameters leading to superconducting diode effect with optimal performance is presented. Then, it is explicitly highlighted that nonreciprocity of supercurrent can be characterized either by current-voltage relation obtained from resistive direct-current measurements in the metal-superconductor fluctuation region ($T\approx T_c$) or by current-phase relation and nonreciprocity of superfluid inductance obtained from alternating-current measurements in the superconducting phase ($T<T_c$). Finally, insight into future directions in this active research field is provided with a perspective analysis on intertwining between band-topology and helical superconductivity, which could be useful to steer the engineering of emergent topological superconducting technologies.

Abstract:The study of terahertz artificial electromagnetic metamaterials is constantly challenged by the problems of large loss, poor performance, and inflexible control. Superconducting materials exhibiting extremely low losses arc among the best materials for high-performance functional devices in terahertz band. As such, this paper introduces terahertz superconducting artificial electromagnetic metamaterials, along with a detailed summary of their functionalities of low loss and flexible control. With respect to the application requirement of high performance, an analysis of the development trend, existing problems, and key scientific issues on terahertz functional devices is provided herein.
