Abstract:Thunderstorms emit fluxes of gamma rays known as gamma-ray glows 1,2 , sporadically observed by aircraft 1,3,4,5,6,7 , balloons 8,9,10,11 and from the ground 12,13,14,15,16,17,18 . Observations report increased gamma-ray emissions by tens of percent up to two orders of magnitude above the background, sometimes abruptly terminated by lightning discharges 1,3,4,5 . Glows are produced by the acceleration of energetic electrons in high-electric-field regions within thunderclouds 8 and contribute to charge dissipation 3 . Glows had been considered as quasi-stationary phenomena 3,5,12 , with durations up to a few tens of seconds and spatial scales up to 10–20 km. However, no measurements of the full extension in space and time of a gamma-ray-glow region and their occurring frequency have been reported so far. Here we show that tropical thunderclouds over ocean and coastal regions commonly emit gamma rays for hours over areas up to a few thousand square kilometres. Emission is associated with deep convective cores; it is not uniform and continuous but shows characteristic timescales of 1–10 s and even subsecond for individual glows. The dynamics of gamma-glowing thunderclouds strongly contradicts the quasi-stationary picture of glows and instead resembles that of a huge gamma-glowing 'boiling pot' in both pattern and behaviour.

Abstract:Terrestrial gamma‐ray flashes (TGFs) and other high‐energy radiation phenomena related to thunderstorms remain incompletely understood since their discovery nearly 30 years ago. Space and ground‐based platforms have provided insights, but limitations exist in temporal resolution, signal‐to‐noise ratios, and proximity to events. This study presents findings from a balloon‐borne gamma‐ray spectrometer flown into a thunderstorm over northern Mississippi on 19 June 2023. The instrument detected three distinct millisecond‐duration TGF events correlated with lightning strikes. Sustained gamma‐ray glows lasting up to 2 minutes were measured and tied to thunderstorm electrostatic fields. Notably, radiation was observed during a direct lightning strike to the payload. This complex 800‐millisecond event reveals insights into radiation from leader propagation and return strokes. These findings from a single balloon flight demonstrate the prevalence of energetic processes within thunderstorms. Finally, the balloon platform offered an exceptional combination of temporal resolution and validation capabilities to advance the understanding of thunderstorm radiation motivating future follow‐up studies.

Abstract:Two different hard-radiation phenomena are known to originate from thunderclouds: terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) 1 and gamma-ray glows 2 . Both involve an avalanche of electrons accelerated to relativistic energies but are otherwise different. Glows are known to last for one to hundreds of seconds, have moderate intensities and originate from quasi-stationary thundercloud fields 2,3,4,5 . TGFs exhibit high intensities and have characteristic durations of tens to hundreds of microseconds 6,7,8,9 . TGFs often show a close association with an emission of strong radio signals 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17 and optical pulses 18,19,20,21 , which indicates the involvement of lightning leaders in their generation. Here we report unique observations of a different phenomenon, which we call flickering gamma-ray flashes (FGFs). FGFs resemble the usual multi-pulse TGFs 22,23,24 but have more pulses and each pulse has a longer duration than ordinary TGFs. FGF durations span from 20 to 250 ms, which reaches the lower boundary of the gamma-ray glow duration. FGFs are radio and optically silent, which makes them distinct from normal TGFs. An FGF starts as an ordinary gamma-ray glow, then suddenly increases exponentially in intensity and turns into an unstable, 'flickering' mode with a sequence of pulses. FGFs could be the missing link between the gamma-ray glows and conventional TGFs, whose absence has been puzzling the atmospheric electricity community for two decades.

Abstract:Two types of high-energy events have been detected from thunderstorms. One is "terrestrial gamma-ray flashes" (TGFs), sub-millisecond emissions coinciding with lightning discharges. The other is minute-lasting "gamma-ray glows". Although both phenomena are thought to originate from relativistic runaway electron avalanches in strong electric fields, the connection between them is not well understood. Here we report unequivocal simultaneous detection of a gamma-ray glow termination and a downward TGF, observed from the ground. During a winter thunderstorm in Japan on 9 January 2018, our detectors caught a gamma-ray glow, which moved for ~100 s with ambient wind, and then abruptly ceased with a lightning discharge. Simultaneously, the detectors observed photonuclear reactions triggered by a downward TGF, whose radio pulse was located within ~1 km from where the glow ceased. It is suggested that the highly-electrified region producing the glow was related to the initiation of the downward TGF.

Abstract:In the spring of 2017 an ER-2 aircraft campaign was undertaken over continental United States to observe energetic radiation from thunderstorms and lightning. The payload consisted of a suite of instruments designed to detect optical signals, electric fields, and gamma rays from lightning. Starting from Georgia, USA, 16 flights were performed, for a total of about 70 flight hours at a cruise altitude of 20 km. Of these, 45 flight hours were over thunderstorm regions. An analysis of two gamma ray glow events that were observed over Colorado at 21:47 UT on 8May 2017 is presented.We explore the charge structure of the cloud system, as well as possible mechanisms that can produce the gamma ray glows. The thundercloud system we passed during the gamma ray glow observation had strong convection in the core of the cloud system. Electric field measurements combined with radar and radio measurements suggest an inverted charge structure, with an upper negative charge layer and a lower positive charge layer. Based on modeling results, we were not able to unambiguously determine the production mechanism. Possible mechanisms are either an enhancement of cosmic background locally (above or below 20 km) by an electric field below the local threshold or an enhancement of the cosmic background inside the cloud but then with normal polarity and an electric field well above the Relativistic Runaway Electron Avalanche threshold

Abstract:Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are high-energy emissions in thunderstorms that were discovered first by satellite-based and then by ground-based gamma-ray detectors with photon energy up to tens of MeV. TGFs are a natural high-energy phenomenon associated with lightning discharges that frequently occur during thunderstorms. However, their production mechanisms and associated processes are still unclear. TGF studies have already been a research spotlight in the atmospheric electricity and high-energy atmosphere research areas. In this paper, we review recent research progresses on TGF studies in the past decade, including TGF detection, the relationship between TGFs and lightning processes, and thunderstorm activities. Several unsolved important scientific questions are discussed. Results suggest that upward TGFs observed by satellite-based detectors are closely connected with the development of in-cloud upward negative leaders. They are usually generated in milliseconds of the initiation of upward negative leaders and may produce a kind of distinct radio emissions because of the generation and propagation of huge amounts of high-energy electrons. By contrast, its counterpart, i.e., downward TGFs observed by ground-based gamma-ray detectors, is associated with different types of lightning processes, such as downward negative or upward positive leaders, the initial continuing current stage of rocket-triggered lightning flashes return stroke processes. Because of limited observations, how these downward TGFs are generated is still unclear. Benefiting from the development of state-of-the-art instruments with high temporal and spatial resolutions, new insights into the processes and mechanisms of TGFs will be achieved with coordinated observations from satellite-based and ground-based measurements.

Abstract:Thunderstorm and lightning related energetic radiation can generally be categorized as (1) leader X-rays, (2) Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs), or (3) Thunderstorm Ground Enhancements (TGEs). TGFs are usually recorded from satellites, and, on some occasions, they have been recorded from the ground, but only a few attempts have been made to measure TGFs from aircraft. Thunderstorm Ground Enhancements (TGEs) are much longer duration than TGFs, and they are recorded at ground level. Energetic radiation associated with thunderstorms and lightning is a relatively recently recognized hazard. It can have possible adverse effects on commercial and general aviation avionics, thus an experimental understanding of the impulsive and prolonged radiation enhancements onboard aircraft is essential (Eack et al., 1996). In this paper, we present artificial TGFs and TGEs, which were acquired in the lab with a compact CsI scintillator detector, along with commercial and general aviation aircraft-based measurements to assess the feasibility of a large-scale aircraft-based study. Our preliminary results include 180 h of aircraft-based measurements, the longest aircraft-based TGF search to date, and show that the detector hardware, installation protocol, processing software, and search algorithm can be used for a large-scale study of energetic radiation from thunderstorms and lightning.

Abstract:Terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) are a class of enigmatic electrical discharges in the Earth's atmosphere. In this study, we analyze an unprecedentedly large dataset comprised of 2188 TGFs whose signatures were simultaneously measured using space- and ground-based detectors over a five-year period. The Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on board the Fermi spacecraft provided the energetic radiation measurements. Radio frequency (RF) measurements were obtained from the Global Lightning Dataset (GLD360). Here we show the existence of two categories of TGFs - those that were accompanied by quasi-simultaneous electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) detected by the GLD360 and those without such simultaneous EMPs. We examined, for the first time, the dependence of the TGF-associated EMP-peak-amplitude on the horizontal offset distance between the Fermi spacecraft and the TGF source. TGFs detected by the GBM with sources at farther horizontal distances are expected to be intrinsically brighter and were found to be associated with EMPs having larger median peak-amplitudes. This provides independent evidence that the EMPs and TGFs are produced by the same phenomenon, rather than the EMPs being from "regular" lightning in TGF-producing thunderstorms.

High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena

Abstract:Thunderstorms produce strong electric fields over regions on the order of kilometer. The corresponding electric potential differences are on the order of 100 MV. Secondary cosmic rays reaching these regions may be significantly accelerated and even amplified in relativistic runaway avalanche processes. These phenomena lead to enhancements of the high-energy background radiation observed by detectors on the ground and on board aircraft. Moreover, intense submillisecond gamma-ray bursts named terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) produced in thunderstorms are detected from low Earth orbit satellites. When passing through the atmosphere, these gamma-rays are recognized to produce secondary relativistic electrons and positrons rapidly trapped in the geomagnetic field and injected into the near-Earth space environment. In the present work, we attempt to give an overview of the current state of research on high-energy phenomena associated with thunderstorms.

Abstract:Both observational and theoretical research in the area of atmospheric high-energy physics since about 1980 has revealed that thunderstorms produce X-rays and gamma-rays into the MeV region by a number of mechanisms. While the nature of these mechanisms is still an area of active research, enough observational and theoretical data exists to permit an evaluation of hazards presented by ionizing radiation from thunderstorms to aircraft crew, passengers, and equipment. In this paper, we use data from existing studies to evaluate these hazards in a quantitative way. We find that hazards to humans are generally low, although with the possibility of an isolated rare incident giving rise to enough radiation dose to produce noticeable symptoms. On the other hand, unshielded computer memory chips in avionics systems stand a small but non-zero chance of severe damage from thunderstorm-generated radiation and would not leave easily detectable traces of the occurrence. Should a rare phenomenon called ball lightning occur near or within an aircraft, the possibility exists of substantial damage to both equipment and personnel. Overall, radiation hazards from thunderstorms appear to be low, but should be considered and investigated with radiation monitoring equipment on sample flights.
Termination of Electron Acceleration in Thundercloud by Intra/Inter-cloud Discharge

Abstract:An on-ground observation program for high energy atmospheric phenomena in winter thunderstorms along Japan Sea has been performed via measurements of gamma-ray radiation, atmospheric electric field and low-frequency radio band. On February 11, 2017, the radiation detectors recorded gamma-ray emission lasting for 75 sec. The gamma-ray spectrum extended up to 20 MeV and was reproduced by a cutoff power-law model with a photon index of $1.36^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$, being consistent with a Bremsstrahlung radiation from a thundercloud (as known as a gamma-ray glow and a thunderstorm ground enhancement). Then the gamma-ray glow was abruptly terminated with a nearby lightning discharge. The low-frequency radio monitors, installed $\sim$50 km away from the gamma-ray observation site recorded leader development of an intra/inter-cloud discharge spreading over $\sim$60 km area with a $\sim$300 ms duration. The timing of the gamma-ray termination coincided with the moment when the leader development of the intra/inter-cloud discharge passed 0.7 km horizontally away from the radiation monitors. The intra/inter-cloud discharge started $\sim$15 km away from the gamma-ray observation site. Therefore, the glow was terminated by the leader development, while it did not trigger the lightning discharge in the present case.

Television Image of a Large Upward Electrical Discharge Above a Thunderstorm System

Abstract:An image of an unusual luminous electrical discharge over a thunderstorm 250 kilometers from the observing site has been obtained with a low-light-level television camera. The discharge began at the cloud tops at 14 kilometers and extended into the clear air 20 kilometers higher. The image, which had a duration of less than 30 milliseconds,resembled two jets or fountains and was probably caused by two localizd electric charge concentrations at the cloud tops. Large upward discharges may create a hazard for aircraft and rocket launches and, by penetrating into the ionosphere, may initiate whistler waves and other effects on a magnetospheric scale. Such upward electrical discharges may account for unexplained photometric observations of distant lightning events that showed a low rise rate of the luminous pulse and no electromagnetic sferic pulse of the type that accompanies cloud-to-earth lightning strokes. An unusually high rate of such photometric events was recorded during the night of 22 to 23 September 1989 during a storm associated with hurricane Hugo.

Abstract:Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flashes (TGFs) are ten‐to‐hundreds of microsecond bursts of gamma‐rays produced when electrons in strong electric fields in thunderclouds are accelerated to relativistic energies. Space instruments have observed TGFs with source photon brightness down to ∼1017–1016. Based on space and aircraft observations, TGFs have been considered rare phenomena produced in association with very few lightning discharges. Space observations associated with lightning ground observations in the radio band have indicated that there exists a population of dimmer TGFs. Here we show observations of TGFs from aircraft altitude that were not detected by a space instrument viewing the same area. The TGFs were found through Monte Carlo modeling to be associated with 1015–1012 photons at source, which is several orders of magnitude below what can be seen from space. Our results suggest that there exists a significant population of TGFs that are too weak to be observed from space.

Abstract:Particle accelerators abound in space plasmas, saturating the cosmos with fully stripped nuclei and gamma rays, with energies surpassing the capabilities of human-made accelerators by orders of magnitude. Upon reaching Earth's atmosphere, these particles trigger extensive air showers (EASs), generating millions of secondary cosmic rays of lower energies. Free electrons from EASs developing in the atmosphere are seeds for atmospheric electron accelerators. Strong atmospheric electric fields (AEFs) evolving during thunderstorms act as accelerators, amplifying the intensity of electrons many times, significantly enlarging the EAS size (number of electrons). Thus, the energy of the primary cosmic ray recovered by EAS size can be significantly overestimated. Recently discovered by high-altitude EAS arrays, PeVatron candidates (ultra–high-energy (UHE) astrophysical gamma-ray sources) must be carefully examined according to the atmospheric conditions during EAS detection. Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory and High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory arrays are located in regions of frequent thunderstorms, and an AEF's strength can reach and surpass the critical strength to start relativistic runaway electron avalanches. A few registered UHE gamma rays from stellar sources can be registered at just this time when the AEF highly enhances the EAS size. Thunderstorm ground enhancements are copiously registered at mountain peaks of Eastern Europe, Germany, and Armenia, with energies well above the threshold energy of EAS array scintillators. Thus, the overestimation of the energy of primary particles is not an exotic process but a consequence of already well-established physical phenomena. Consequently, a report on each registered UHE gamma ray should include the recorded time and corresponding weather conditions.

Abstract:High-energy gamma radiation in the Earth's atmosphere is associated with the bremsstrahlung of Relativistic Runaway Electron Avalanches (RREA) developing in thunderstorm electric fields. In this paper, RREA development is studied in the system of two strong electric-field regions within thunderstorms, which accelerate runaway electrons toward each other. Such a system is called the simple reactor. It is discovered that the propagation of gamma rays and runaway electrons from one region to another leads to positive feedback. This feedback called the reactor feedback can make RREA self-sustaining, thus effectively multiplying high-energy particles inside thunderstorms containing the simple reactor. The spectrum and characteristic time scale of the simple reactor gamma radiation are in agreement with Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) data. The applicability of the simple reactor model to TGF is discussed, and the distinguishing observable properties of the simple reactor radiation during TGF and Thunderstorm Ground Enhancement are considered.

Abstract:We report the observation of two isolated clouds of positrons inside an active thunderstorm. These observations were made by the Airborne Detector for Energetic Lightning Emissions (ADELE), an array of six gamma-ray detectors, which flew on a Gulfstream V jet aircraft through the top of an active thunderstorm in August 2009. ADELE recorded two 511 keV gamma-ray count rate enhancements, 35 seconds apart, each lasting approximately 0.2 seconds. The enhancements, which were about a factor of 12 above background, were both accompanied by electrical activity as measured by a flat-plate antenna on the underside of the aircraft. The energy spectra were consistent with a source mostly composed of positron annihilation gamma rays, with a prominent 511 keV line clearly visible in the data. Model fits to the data suggest that the aircraft was briefly immersed in clouds of positrons, more than a kilometer across. It is not clear how the positron clouds were created within the thunderstorm, but it is possible they were caused by the presence of the aircraft in the electrified environment.

Abstract:Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are transient gamma-ray emissions from thunderstorms, generated by electrons accelerated to relativistic energies in electric fields. Elves are ultraviolet and optical emissions excited in the lower ionosphere by electromagnetic waves radiated from lightning current pulses. We observed a TGF and an associated elve using the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor on the International Space Station. The TGF occurred at the onset of a lightning current pulse that generated an elve, in the early stage of a lightning flash. Our measurements suggest that the current onset is fast and has a high amplitude-a prerequisite for elves-and that the TGF is generated in the electric fields associated with the lightning leader.
