Abstract:The priorities and criteria for selecting and optimizing offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) processes are somewhat different from onshore plants due to the small area available. In the present work, an attempt has been made to deal with the issue of choosing the best design of the SMR liquefaction process with a new perspective. In addition to the total power consumption (TPC) of the process, two other important criteria, namely the UA (overall heat transfer coefficient) of the LNG heat exchanger and the number of mixed refrigerant components have been considered to evaluate the superiority of the process. In order to implement this multi-objective evaluation framework, the combination of the multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm and the fuzzy decision method has been used. The results showed that the MOPSO algorithm has the ability to reduce the TPC of the SMR process by 2.88 % compared to previous studies. The Pareto fronts obtained from the optimizations create the clear picture of the effect of the type and number of refrigerants on the UA parameter of the heat exchanger, as well as the mutual effect of the TPC optimization on the UA parameter of the heat exchanger as two conflicting objective functions. Finally, considering all three criteria introduced, from the 100 Pareto optimal points obtained in the case studies, the best SMR process design for offshore use has been selected. The superior option selected for the design of the SMR process, which uses a combination of 5 components as the mixed refrigerant, compared to the initial combination considered for the mixed refrigerant with 4 components, decreased the TPC value by 11.2 % and the UA value by 12.5 %.
