Abstract:The phase diagram of QCD at finite temperature and density and the existence of a critical point are currently very actively researched topics. Although tremendous progress has been made, in the case of two light quark flavors even the order of the phase transition at zero density is still under discussion. Finite-size scaling is a powerful method for the analysis of phase transitions in lattice QCD simulations. From the scaling behavior, critical exponents can be tested and the order as well as the universality class of a phase transition can be established. This requires knowledge of the critical exponents and the scaling behavior. We use a non-perturbative Renormalization Group method to obtain critical exponents and the finite-size scaling functions for the O(4) universality class in three dimensions. These results are useful for a comparison to the actual scaling behavior in lattice QCD simulations with two flavors, as well as for an estimate of the size of the scaling region and the deviations from the expected scaling behavior.

Abstract:Our numerical simulations with the Cahn-Hilliard equation show that coarsening of fractal clusters (FCs) is not a scale-invariant process. On the other hand, a typical coarsening length scale and interfacial area of the FC exhibit power laws in time, while the mass fractal dimension remains invariant. The initial value of the lower cutoff is a relevant length scale. A sharp-interface model is formulated that can follow the whole dynamics of a diffusion controlled growth, coarsening, fragmentation and approach to equilibrium in a system with conserved order parameter.

Abstract:In this work we analyze the universal scaling functions and the critical exponents at the upper critical dimension of a continuous phase transition. The consideration of the universal scaling behavior yields a decisive check of the value of the upper critical dimension. We apply our method to a non-equilibrium continuous phase transition. But focusing on the equation of state of the phase transition it is easy to extend our analysis to all equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase transitions observed numerically or experimentally.

Abstract:One of the most impressive features of continuous phase transitions is the concept of universality, that allows to group the great variety of different critical phenomena into a small number of universality classes. All systems belonging to a given universality class have the same critical exponents, and certain scaling functions become identical near the critical point. It is the aim of this work to demonstrate the usefulness of universal scaling functions for the analysis of non-equilibrium phase transitions. In order to limit the coverage of this article, we focus on a particular class of non-equilibrium critical phenomena, the so-called absorbing phase transitions. These phase transitions arise from a competition of opposing processes, usually creation and annihilation processes. The transition point separates an active phase and an absorbing phase in which the dynamics is frozen. A systematic analysis of universal scaling functions of absorbing phase transitions is presented, including static, dynamical, and finite-size scaling measurements. As a result a picture gallery of universal scaling functions is presented which allows to identify and to distinguish universality classes.

Phase transitions beyond criticality: extending Ising universal scaling functions to describe entire phases

Abstract:Universal scaling laws only apply asymptotically near critical phase transitions. We propose a general scheme, based on normal form theory of renormalization group flows, for incorporating corrections to scaling that quantitatively describe the entire neighboring phases. Expanding Onsager's exact solution of the 2D Ising model about the critical point, we identify a special coordinate with radius of convergence covering the entire physical temperature range, $0<T<\infty$. Without an exact solution, we demonstrate that using solely the critical singularity with low- and high-temperature expansions leads to exponentially converging approximations across all temperatures for both the 2D and 3D Ising free energies and the 3D magnetization. We discuss challenges and opportunities for future work.

Abstract:Heavy-ion collisions are a good tool to explore hot nuclear matter below saturation density. It has been established that if a nuclear system reaches the thermal and chemical equilibrium, this leads to scaling properties in the isotope production when comparing two systems which differ in proton fraction. This article presents a study of the isoscaling properties of an expanding gas source exploring different thermodynamic states (density, temperature, proton fraction). This experimental work highlights the existence of an isoscaling relationship for hydrogen and 3He, 4He helium isotopes which agrees with the hypothesis of thermal and chemical equilibrium. Moreover, this work reveals the limitations of isoscaling when the two systems differ slightly in total mass and temperature. Also, a discrepancy has been observed for the 6He isotope, which could be explained by finite size effects or by the specific halo nature of this cluster.

Abstract:The collective behavior of a many-body system near a continuous phase transition is insensitive to the details of its microscopic physics[1]. Characteristic features near the phase transition are that the thermodynamic observables follow generalized scaling laws[1]. The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition[2,3] in two-dimensional (2D) Bose gases presents a particularly interesting case because the marginal dimensionality and intrinsic scaling symmetry[4] result in a broad fluctuation regime which manifests itself in an extended range of universal scaling behavior. Studies on BKT transition in cold atoms have stimulated great interest in recent years[5-10], clear demonstration of a critical behavior near the phase transition, however, has remained an elusive goal. Here we report the observation of a scale-invariant, universal behavior of 2D gases through in-situ density and density fluctuation measurements at different temperatures and interaction strengths. The extracted thermodynamic functions confirm a wide universal region near the BKT phase transition, provide a sensitive test to the universality prediction by classical-field theory[11,12] and quantum Monte Carlo (MC) calculations[13], and point toward growing density-density correlations in the fluctuation region. Our assay raises new perspectives to explore further universal phenomena in the realm of classical and quantum critical physics.
Locating the Critical Point of QCD Phase Transition by Finite-Size Scaling

Abstract:It is argued that in relativistic heavy ion collisions, due to limited size of the formed matter, the reliable criterion of critical point is finite-size scaling, rather than non-monotonous behavior of observable. How to locate critical point by finite-size scaling is proposed. The data of $\pt$ correlation from RHIC/STAR are analyzed. Critical points are likely observed around $\sqrt s =62$ and 200 GeV. They could be, respectively, the transition of deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration predicted by lattice-QCD. Further confirmation with other observable and energies is suggested.

Abstract:The significance of the question of the order of the phase transition in QCD, and recent evidence that real-world QCD is probably close to having a single second order transition as a function of temperature, is reviewed. Although this circumstance seems to remove the possibility that the QCD transition during the big bang might have had spectacular cosmological consequences, there is some good news: it allows highly non-trivial yet reliable quantitative predictions to be made for the behavior near the transition. These predictions can be tested in numerical simulations and perhaps even eventually in heavy ion collisions. The present paper is a very elementary discussion of the relevant concepts, meant to be an accessible introduction for those innocent of the renormalization group approach to critical phenomena and/or the details of QCD.
Complete universal scaling in first-order phase transitions

Abstract:Phase transitions and critical phenomena are among the most intriguing phenomena in nature and society. They are classified as first-order phase transitions (FOPTs) and continuous ones. While the latter show marvelous phenomena of scaling and universality, whether the former behaves similarly is a long-standing controversial issue. Here we definitely demonstrate complete universal scaling in field driven FOPTs for Langevin equations in both zero and two spatial dimensions by rescaling all parameters and subtracting extra contributions with singular dimensions from an effective temperature and a special field according to an effective theory that possesses a fixed point of a seemingly un-physical imaginary value. This offers a perspective different from the usual nucleation and growth but conforming to continuous phase transitions to study FOPTs.

Abstract:It is pointed out that finite-size effect is not negligible in locatingcritical point of QCD phase transition at current relativistic heavy ioncollisions. Finite-size behavior near critical point, in particular,finite-size scaling and fixed-point behavior of the final observables can beserved as a quantitative identification of critical point and the nearbyboundary of the QCD phase transition. Scaling approach to nuclear structure in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, the initial condition of the produced quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and its evolution are sensitive to collective nuclear structure parameters describing the shape and radial profiles of the nuclei. We find a general scaling relation between these parameters and many experimental observables such as elliptic flow, triangular flow, and particle multiplicity distribution. In particular, the ratios of observables between two isobar systems depend only on the differences of these parameters, but not on the details of the final state interactions, hence offering a new way to constrain the QGP initial condition. Using this scaling relation, we show how the structure parameters of $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr conspire to produce the rich centrality dependences of these ratios, as measured by the STAR Collaboration. Our scaling approach demonstrates that isobar collisions are a precision tool to probe the initial condition of heavy-ion collisions, as well as the collective nuclear structures, including the neutron skin, of the atomic nuclei across energy scales.

Abstract:Based on the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model, finite-size scaling effects on nuclear liquid-gas phase transition probes are investigated by studying the de-excitation processes of six thermal sources of different sizes with the same initial density and similar N/Z. Using several probes including the total multiplicity derivative (dM(tot)/dT), second moment parameter (M-2), intermediate mass fragment (IMF) multiplicity (N-IMF), Fisher's power-law exponent (tau), and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent (xi), the relationship between the phase transition temperature and the source size has been established. It is observed that the phase transition temperatures obtained from the IMF multiplicity, Fisher's exponent, and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent have a strong correlation with the source size. Moreover, by employing the finite-size scaling law, the critical temperature T-c and the critical exponent nu were obtained for infinite nuclear matter.
Universality of scaled particle spectra in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:We propose a new observable derived from a centrality-dependent scaling of transverse particle spectra. By removing the global scales of total particle number and mean transverse momentum, we isolate the shape of the spectrum. In hydrodynamic simulations, while the multiplicity and mean transverse momentum fluctuate significantly, the scaled spectrum is found to be almost constant even at an event-by-event level and after resonance decays. This universality survives when averaging over events in each centrality bin before scaling. We then investigate the presence of this scaling in experimental data from the ALICE collaboration in Pb-Pb, Xe-Xe, and p-Pb collisions. We find a remarkable universality in the experimentally observed scaled spectra at low transverse momentum, compatible with hydrodynamic predictions. The data show a minor breaking of universality at large transverse momentum and hints of evolution with the system size that are not seen in simulations. Our results motivate further theoretical and experimental investigations of this new observable to bring to light the collective and non-collective behavior encoded in the transverse particle spectrum of different collision systems.

Abstract:Phase separation is not only ubiquitous in diverse physical systems, but also plays an important organizational role inside biological cells. However, experimental studies of intracellular condensates (drops with condensed concentrations of specific collections of proteins and nucleic acids) have challenged the standard coarsening theories of phase separation. Specifically, the coarsening rates observed are unexpectedly slow for many intracellular condensates. Recently, Folkmann et al. [ Science 373 , 1218 (2021)] argued that the slow coarsening rate can be caused by the slow conversion of a condensate constituent between the state in the dilute phase and the condensate state. One implication of this conversion-limited picture is that standard theories of coarsening in phase separation (Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theory of Ostwald ripening and drop coalescence schemes) no longer apply. Surprisingly, I show here that the model equations of conversion-limited phase separation can instead be mapped onto a grain growth model in a single-phase material in three dimensions. Abstract:The dynamics of many-body systems spanning condensed matter, cosmology, and beyond are hypothesized to be universal when the systems cross continuous phase transitions. The universal dynamics are expected to satisfy a scaling symmetry of space and time with the crossing rate, inspired by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We test this symmetry based on Bose condensates in a shaken optical lattice. Shaking the lattice drives condensates across an effectively ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. After crossing the critical point, the condensates manifest delayed growth of spin fluctuations and develop antiferromagnetic spatial correlations resulting from the sub-Poisson distribution of the spacing between topological defects. The fluctuations and correlations are invariant in scaled space-time coordinates, in support of the scaling symmetry of quantum critical dynamics.

Abstract:In the 1960's, four famous scaling relations were developed which relate the six standard critical exponents describing continuous phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit of statistical physics models. They are well understood at a fundamental level through the renormalization group. They have been verified in multitudes of theoretical, computational and experimental studies and are firmly established and profoundly important for our understanding of critical phenomena. One of the scaling relations, hyperscaling, fails above the upper critical dimension. There, critical phenomena are governed by Gaussian fixed points in the renormalization-group formalism. Dangerous irrelevant variables are required to deliver the mean-field and Landau values of the critical exponents, which are deemed valid by the Ginzburg criterion. Also above the upper critical dimension, the standard picture is that, unlike for low-dimensional systems, finite-size scaling is non-universal. Here we report on new developments which indicate that the current paradigm is flawed and incomplete. In particular, the introduction of a new exponent characterising the finite-size correlation length allows one to extend hyperscaling beyond the upper critical dimension. Moreover, finite-size scaling is shown to be universal provided the correct scaling window is chosen. These recent developments also lead to the introduction of a new scaling relation analogous to one introduced by Fisher 50 years ago.

Abstract:The thermodynamics of excited nuclear systems allows one to explore the second-order phase transition in a two-component quantum mixture. Temperatures and densities are derived from quantum fluctuations of fermions. The pressures are determined from the grand partition function of Fisher's model. Critical scaling of observables is found for systems which differ in neutron to proton concentrations thus constraining the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter. The derived critical exponent {\beta}= 0.35 \pm 0.01, belongs to the liquid-gas universality class. The critical compressibility factor Pc /{\rho}c Tc increases with increasing neutron number.
