Abstract:Strong $\gamma$-ray emission from cocoons of young radio galaxies is newly predicted. Considering the process of adiabatic injection of the shock dissipation energy and mass of the relativistic jet in active nuclei (AGNs) into the cocoon, while assuming thermalizing electron plasma interactions, we find that the thermal electron temperature of the cocoon is typically predicted in $\sim$MeV, which is determined only by the bulk Lorentz factor of the relativistic jet. Together with the time-dependent dynamics of the cocoon expansion, we find that young cocoons can yield thermal bremsstrahlung emissions at energies $\sim$ MeV.

Abstract:The matter content of jets in active galactic nuclei is examined in a new way. We model the dynamical expansion of its cocoon embedded in the intra-cluster medium (ICM). By comparing the observed shape of the cocoon with that expected from the theoretical model, we estimate the total pressure ($P_{\rm c}$) and electron temperature ($T_{e}$) of the cocoon. The number density of the total electrons ($n_{e^{-}}$) is constrained by using the non-thermal spectrum of the hot spot and the analysis of the momentum balance between the jet thrust and the rum pressure of ICM. Together with the obtained $P_{\rm c}$, $T_{e}$ and $n_{e^{-}}$, we constrain the matter content in the jets. We find that, in the case of Cygnus A, the ratio of number density of protons to that of electrons is of order of $10^{-3}$ . This implies the existence of a large number of positron in the jet.

Abstract:The interaction of optically emitting clouds with warm X‐ray gas and hot, tenuous radio plasma in radio jet cocoons is modelled by 2D compressible hydrodynamic simulations. The initial setup is the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability at a contact surface of density contrast 104. The denser medium contains clouds of higher density. Optically thin radiation is realized via a cooling source term. The cool phase effectively extracts energy from the other gas which is both, radiated away and used for acceleration of the cold phase. This increases the system's cooling rate substantially and leads to a massively amplified cold mass dropout. We show that it is feasible, given small seed clouds of the order of 100 M⊙, that all of the optically emitting gas in a radio jet cocoon may be produced by this mechanism on the propagation time‐scale of the jet. The mass is generally distributed as T−1/2 with temperature, with a prominent peak at 14 000 K. This peak is likely to be related to the counteracting effects of shock heating and a strong rise in the cooling function. The volume filling factor of cold gas in this peak is of the order of 10−5–10−3 and generally increases during the simulation time. The simulations tend towards an isotropic scale‐free Kolmogorov‐type energy spectrum over the simulation time‐scale. We find the same Mach‐number density relation as Kritsuk & Norman and show that this relation may explain the velocity widths of emission lines associated with high‐redshift radio galaxies, if the environmental temperature is lower, or the jet‐ambient density ratio is less extreme than in their low‐redshift counterparts.

On the escape of cosmic rays from radio galaxy cocoons

Abstract:(Abridged) A model for the escape of CR particles from radio galaxy cocoons is presented here. It is assumed that the radio cocoon is poorly magnetically connected to the environment. An extreme case of this kind is an insulating boundary layer of magnetic fields, which can efficiently suppress particle escape. More likely, magnetic field lines are less organised and allow the transport of CR particles from the source interior to the surface region. For such a scenario two transport regimes are analysed: diffusion of particles along inter-phase magnetic flux tubes (leaving the cocoon) and cross field transport of particles in flux tubes touching the cocoon surface. The cross field diffusion is likely the dominate escape path, unless a significant fraction of the surface is magnetically connected to the environment. Major cluster merger should strongly enhance the particle escape by two complementary mechanisms. i) The merger shock waves shred radio cocoons into filamentary structures, allowing the CRs to easily reach the radio cocoon boundary due to the changed morphology. ii) Also efficient particle losses can be expected for radio cocoons not compressed in shock waves. There, for a short period after the sudden injection of large scale turbulence, the (anomalous) cross field diffusion can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude. This lasts until the turbulent energy cascade has reached the microscopic scales, which determine the value of the microscopic diffusion coefficients.

Abstract:Accreting supermassive black holes frequently power jets that interact with the interstellar medium (ISM)/circumgalactic medium, regulating star formation in the galaxy. Highly supersonic jets launched by active galactic nuclei (AGN) power a cocoon that confines them and shocks the ambient medium. We build on the models of narrow conical jets interacting with a smooth ambient medium, including the effect of dense clouds, which are an essential ingredient of a multiphase ISM. The key physical ingredient of this model is that the clouds along the supersonic jet beam strongly decelerate the jet head but the subsonic cocoon easily moves around the clouds without much resistance. We propose scalings for important physical quantities—cocoon pressure, head and cocoon speed, and jet radius. For the first time, we obtain the analytic condition on the ambient medium's clumpiness for the jet to dissipate within the cocoon and verify it with numerical simulations of conical jets interacting with a uniform ISM with embedded spherical clouds. A jet is defined to be dissipated when the cocoon speed exceeds the speed of the jet head. We compare our models with more sophisticated numerical simulations and direct observations of jet–ISM interaction (e.g., quasar J1316+1753), and we discuss implications for the Fermi/eROSITA bubbles. Our work also motivates effective subgrid models for AGN jet feedback in a clumpy ISM unresolved by the present generation of cosmological galaxy formation simulations.

The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect by Cocoons of Radio Galaxies

Abstract:We estimate the deformation of the cosmic microwave background radiation by the hot region (``cocoon'') around a radio galaxy. A simple model is adopted for cocoon evolution while the jet is on, and a model of evolution is constructed after the jet is off. It is found that at low redshift the phase after the jet is off is longer than the lifetime of the jets. The Compton y-parameter generated by cocoons is calculated with a Press-Schechter number density evolution. The resultant value of y is of the same order as the COBE constraint. The Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect due to cocoons could therefore be a significant foreground source of small angular scale anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Abstract:As a long GRB jet propagates within the surrounding stellar atmosphere it creates a cocoon composed of an outer Newtonian shocked stellar material and an inner (possibly relativistic) shocked jet material. The jet deposits $10^{51}-10^{52}$ erg into this cocoon. This energy is comparable to the GRB's energy and to the energy of the accompanying supernova, yet its signature has been largely neglected so far. A fraction of the cocoon energy is released during its expansion following the breakout from the star and later as it interacts with the surrounding matter. We explore here the possible signatures of the cocoon emission and outline a framework to calculate them from the conditions of the cocoon at the time of the jet breakout. We show that the cocoon signature depends strongly on the level of mixing between the shocked jet and shocked stellar material that fills it, which is currently unknown. We find that if there is no mixing at all then the $\gamma$-ray emission from the cocoon is so bright that it should have been already detected, and the lack of such detections indicates that mixing at some level must take place. We calculate also the expected signal for partial and full mixing. While the typical signals are weaker than GRBs' afterglows, the latter are highly beamed while the former have wide angles. We predict that future optical, UV and X-ray transient searches, like LSST, ZTF, ULTRASAT, ISS-Lobster and others will most likely detect such signals, providing a wealth of information on the progenitors and jets of GRBs. While we focus on long GRBs, we note that analogous (but weaker) cocoons may arise in short GRBs as well. Their signatures might be the most promising electromagnetic counterparts for gravitational waves merger's signals.

Evidence for low power radio jet-ISM interaction at 10 parsec in the dwarf AGN host NGC 4395

Abstract:Black hole driven outflows in galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) may interact with their interstellar medium (ISM) affecting star formation. Such feedback processes, reminiscent of those seen in massive galaxies, have been reported recently in some dwarf galaxies. However, such studies have usually been on kiloparsec and larger scales and our knowledge on the smallest spatial scales to which these feedback processes can operate is unclear. Here we demonstrate radio jet$-$ISM interaction on the scale of an asymmetric triple radio structure of $\sim$ 10 parsec size in NGC 4395. This triple radio structure is seen in the 15 GHz continuum image and the two asymmetric jet-like structures are situated on either side of the radio core that coincides with the optical {\it Gaia} position. The high resolution radio image and the extended [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission, indicative of an outflow, are spatially coincident and are consistent with the interpretation of a low power radio jet interacting with the ISM. Modelling of the spectral lines using {\tt MAPPINGS}, and estimation of temperature using optical integral field spectroscopic data suggest shock ionization of the gas. The continuum emission at 237 GHz, though weak, was found to spatially coincide with the AGN. However, the CO(2$-$1) line emission was found to be displaced by around 20 parsec northward of the AGN core. The spatial coincidence of molecular H$_2$$\lambda$2.4085 along the jet direction, the morphology of ionised [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and displacement of the CO(2$-$1) emission argues for conditions less favourable for star formation in the central $\sim$ 10 parsec region.

MRC B0319-454: Probing the large-scale structure with a giant radio galaxy

Abstract:We present an investigation of the relationships between the radio properties of a giant radio galaxy MRC B0319-454 and the surrounding galaxy distribution with the aim of examining the influence of intergalactic gas and gravity associated with the large-scale structure on the evolution in the radio morphology. Our new radio continuum observations of the radio source, with high surface brightness sensitivity, images the asymmetries in the megaparsec-scale radio structure in total intensity and polarization. We compare these with the 3-D galaxy distribution derived from galaxy redshift surveys. Galaxy density gradients are observed along and perpendicular to the radio axis: the large-scale structure is consistent with a model wherein the galaxies trace the ambient intergalactic gas and the evolution of the radio structures are ram-pressure limited by this associated gas. Additionally, we have modeled the off-axis evolution of the south-west radio lobe as deflection of a buoyant jet backflow by a transverse gravitational field: the model is plausible if entrainment is small. The case study presented here is a demonstration that giant radio galaxies may be useful probes of the warm-hot intergalactic medium believed to be associated with moderately over dense galaxy distributions.

Simulating SZ intensity maps of giant AGN cocoons

Abstract:We perform relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of the formation and evolution of AGN cocoons produced by very light powerful jets. We calculate the intensity maps of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect at high frequencies for the simulated AGN cocoons using the relativistically correct Wright formalism. Our fully relativistic calculations demonstrate that the contribution from the high temperature gas (kb Te ~ 100 keV) to the SZ signal from AGN cocoons at high frequencies is stronger than that from the shocked ambient intercluster medium owing to the fact that the relativistic spectral functions peak at these temperature values. We present simulations of the SZ effect from AGN cocoons at various frequencies, and demonstrate that SZ observations at 217 GHz and at higher frequencies, such as 857 GHz, will provide us with knowledge about the dynamically-dominant component of AGN cocoons.

Cocoon breakout and escape from the ejecta of neutron star mergers

Abstract:The cocoon is an inevitable product of a jet propagating through ambient matter, and takes a fair fraction of the jet energy. In short gamma-ray bursts, the ambient matter is the ejecta from the merger of neutron stars, expanding with a high velocity $\sim 0.2 c$, in contrast to the static stellar envelope in collapsars. Using 2D relativistic hydrodynamic simulations with the ejecta density profile as $\rho \propto r^{-2}$, we find that the expansion makes a big difference; only 0.5--5\% of the cocoon mass escapes from (faster than) the ejecta, with an opening angle $20^{\circ}$--$30^{\circ}$, while it is $\sim 100\%$ and spherical in collapsars. We also analytically obtain the shares of mass and energies for the escaped and trapped cocoons. Because the mass of the escaped cocoon is small and the trapped cocoon is concealed by the ejecta and the escaped cocoon, we conclude that it is unlikely that the cocoon emission was observed as a counterpart to the gravitational wave event GW170817.

Abstract:Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) relativistic jets are surrounded by hot cocoons which confine jets during their punch out from the progenitor star. These cocoons are copious sources of X-ray photons that can be and are inverse-Compton (IC) scattered to MeV--GeV energies by electrons in the relativistic jet. We provide detailed estimates for IC flux resulting from various interactions between X-ray photons and the relativistic jet, and describe what we can learn about GRB jets and progenitor stars from the detection (or an upper limit) of these IC scattered photons.

Abstract:Modern cosmology predicts that matter in our universe today has assembled into a vast network of filamentary structures colloquially termed the "cosmic web." Because this matter is either electromagnetically invisible (i.e., dark) or too diffuse to image in emission, tests of this cosmic web paradigm are limited. Wide-field surveys do reveal web-like structures in the galaxy distribution, but these luminous galaxies represent less than 10% of baryonic matter. Statistics of absorption by the intergalactic medium (IGM) via spectroscopy of distant quasars support the model yet have not conclusively tied the diffuse IGM to the web. Here, we report on a new method inspired by the Physarum polycephalum slime mold that is able to infer the density field of the cosmic web from galaxy surveys. Applying our technique to galaxy and absorption-line surveys of the local universe, we demonstrate that the bulk of the IGM indeed resides in the cosmic web. From the outskirts of cosmic web filaments, at approximately the cosmic mean matter density (ρ m ) and ~5 virial radii from nearby galaxies, we detect an increasing H i absorption signature toward higher densities and the circumgalactic medium, to ~200ρ m . However, the absorption is suppressed within the densest environments, suggesting shock-heating and ionization deep within filaments and/or feedback processes within galaxies.

Cocoon cooling emission in neutron star mergers

Abstract:In the gravitational wave event GW170817, there was a $\sim 10$ hours gap before electromagnetic (EM) observations, without detection of the cocoon. The cocoon is heated by a \textit{short} gamma-ray burst (\textit{s}GRB) jet propagating through the ejecta of a Neutron Star (NS) merger, and a part of the cocoon escapes the ejecta with an opening angle of $20^{\circ}$--$30^{\circ}$. Here we model the cocoon and calculate its EM emission. Our 2D hydrodynamic simulations suggest that the density and energy distributions, after entering homologous expansion, are well-fitted with power-law functions, in each of the relativistic and non-relativistic parts of the escaped cocoon. Modeling these features, we calculate the cooling emission analytically. We find that the cocoon outshines the r-process kilonova/macronova at early times (10--10$^{3}$ s), peaking at UV bands. The relativistic velocity of the cocoon's photosphere is measurable with instruments such as Swift, ULTRASAT and LSST. We also imply that energetic cocoons, including failed jets, might be detected as X-ray flashes. Our model clarifies the physics and parameter dependence, covering a wide variety of central engines and ejecta of NS mergers and \textit{s}GRBs in the multi-messenger era.

Abstract:The Galactic disc is opaque to radio waves from extragalactic sources with frequencies ν less than ∼ 3 MHz. However, radio waves with kHz, Hz and even lower frequencies may propagate through the intergalactic medium (IGM). I argue that the presence of these waves can be inferred by using the Universe as our detector. I discuss possible sub‐MHz sources and set new non‐trivial upper limits on the energy density of sub‐MHz radio waves in galaxy clusters and the average cosmic background. Limits based on five effects are considered: (1) changes in the expansion of the Universe from the radiation energy density, (2) heating of the IGM by free–free absorption, (3) radiation pressure squeezing of IGM clouds by external radio waves, (4) synchrotron heating of electrons in clusters and (5) inverse Compton upscattering of sub‐MHz radio photons. Any sub‐MHz background must have an energy density much smaller than the cosmic microwave background at frequencies below 1 MHz. The free–free absorption bounds from the Lyman α (Lyα) forest are potentially the strongest, but are highly dependent on the properties of sub‐MHz radio scattering in the IGM. I estimate an upper limit of 6 × 104 L⊙ Mpc−3 for the emissivity within Lyα forest clouds in the frequency range of 5–200 Hz. The sub‐MHz energy density in the Coma cluster is constrained to be less than ∼ 10−15 erg cm −3. At present, none of the limits is strong enough to rule out a maximal Tb= 1012 K sub‐MHz synchrotron background, but other sources may be constrained with better knowledge of sub‐MHz radio propagation in the IGM.

Abstract:Radio activity in AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei) produce feedback on the host galaxy via the impact of the relativistic jets on the circumnuclear gas. Although radio jets can reach up to several times the optical radius of the host galaxy, in this review we focus on the observation of the feedback deposited locally in the central region of the host galaxies, in the form of outflows due to the jet-gas interaction. We begin by discussing how galaxy mergers and interactions are the most favored scenario for triggering radio AGN after gas accretion to the nuclear supermassive black hole and star formation enhancement in the nuclear region, observed in particular in the most luminous sources. We then discuss observational signatures of the process of jet-gas coupling, in particular the resulting outflows and their effects on the host galaxy. These include the presence of shock signatures and the detection of outflows not only along the radio jet but perpendicular to it in many sources. Although most of the studies are done via the observation of ionized gas, molecular gas is also being increasingly observed in outflow, contributing to the bulk of the mass outflow rate. Even though most radio sources present outflow kinetic powers that do not reach $1\%\,L_{bol}$, and thus do not seem to provide an immediate impact on the host galaxy, they act to heat the ISM gas, preventing star formation, slowing the galaxy mass build-up process and limiting the stellar mass growth, in a ``maintenance mode" feedback.

Evidence for a significant mixture of electron/positron pairs in FRII jets constrained by cocoon dynamics

Abstract:We examine the plasma composition of relativistic jets in four FRII radio galaxies by analyzing the total cocoon pressure in terms of partial pressures of thermal and non-thermal electrons/positrons and protons. The total cocoon pressure is determined by cocoon dynamics via comparison of theoretical model with the observed cocoon shape. By inserting the observed number density of non-thermal electrons/positrons and the upper limit of thermal electron/positron number density into the equation of state, the number density of protons is constrained. We apply this method to four FRII radio galaxies (Cygnus A, 3C 219, 3C 223 and 3C 284), for which the total cocoon pressures have been already evaluated. We find that the positron-free plasma comprising of protons and electrons is ruled out, when we consider plausible particle distribution functions. In other words, the mixture of positrons is required for all four FRII radio galaxies; the number density ratio of electrons/positrons to protons is larger than two. Thus, we find that the plasma composition is independent of the jet power and the size of cocoons. We also investigate the additional contribution of thermal electrons/positrons and protons on the cocoon dynamics. When thermal electrons/positrons are absent, the cocoon is supported by the electron/ proton plasma pressure, while both electron/positron pressure supported and electron/proton plasma pressure supported cocoons are allowed if the number density of thermal electrons/positrons is about 10 times larger than that of non-thermal ones.

The Origin of Radio Emission in Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei: Jets, Accretion Flows, or Both?

Abstract:The low-luminosity active galactic nuclei in NGC 3147, NGC 4203, and NGC 4579 have been imaged at four frequencies with the Very Long Baseline Array. The galaxies are unresolved at all frequencies, with size upper limits of 10(3)-10(4) times the Schwarzschild radii of their central massive black holes. The spectral indices between 1.7 and 5.0 GHz range from 0.2 to 0.4; one and possibly two of the galaxies show spectral turnovers between 5.0 and 8.4 GHz. The high brightness temperatures (T-b greater than or similar to 10(9) K) and relatively straight spectra imply that free-free emission and/or absorption cannot account for the slightly inverted spectra. Although the radio properties of the cores superficially resemble predictions for advection-dominated accretion flows, the radio luminosities are too high compared with the X-ray luminosities. We suggest that the bulk of the radio emission is generated by a compact radio jet, which may coexist with a low radiative efficiency accretion flow.
